A must visit museum in Xi'an. It is the largest museum in Xi'an describing the history from the Chin dynasty to the Qing dynasty. By far the most informative museum in Xi'an. You can skip other museums if you have covered this one. Pro tip: 1) This museum gives online free tickets (reserved until 2500 entries per day) on their website. Check one week before your intended plan of visit day. 0therwsie the free tickets will run out of stock. 2) If you miss the online tickets, you could still buy the usual tickets (30 CNY) from their website and book the time slot. This is absolutely necessary. Do not just turn up to buy the tickets on the spot. You won't get any! 3) For the special exhibition of the mural paintings from the Tang dynasty (270 CNY), I would suggest to give it a skip if you are not a history buff. For a usual person, it is not that interesting as those are only the paintings on the stone wall. If you are a history expert, then you may be interested in it.
A great place to see a lot of Tang dynasty art and murals. It was pretty packed and stuffy when we went (prior to COVID), and it wasn't the most peaceful museum experience, with people yelling, tour groups pushing and it just gave an overall chaotic experience to the museum. Our main reason for coming here was to see the Tang dynasty murals that are housed here. This is a separate entrance fee ($35 USD at the time) and you're required to wear shoe coverings and no pictures are allowed. This exhibit was extraordinarily quiet and peaceful and the murals are displayed in a captivating and powerful way, reminiscent of their original home in the tombs. Note that although some scrolls in this exhibit portray themselves to be authentic, many of them are actually replicas, as the actual scrolls are in museums abroad. Note: Visited prior to COVID, so things may be different.
Visiting the museum was one of the original plans in my Xi’an trip. But it was the worst experience. Tourists need to pay money buying tickets to enter most scenery places in Xi’an. But the museum is an exception. You had to line to get free tickets. At the end I didn’t make it, although it was free. The lining situation was awful. The staffs of the museum didn’t make the waiting line clear. Visitors wanted to get free tickets quickly. Some cut in line and didn’t follow rules. Maybe they were not intended to do that. After staying in line about 40 minutes, I felt angry and disappointed then left. It wasted my time. The best way to enjoy the exhibitions in the museum is to make a reservation online in advance.
Been here before.. there are times there are free tickets.. tourist doesn't need to queue up with the Chinese.. they have a special counters for tourists and the queue are usually much more shorter than the normal Chinese queue.. I been here once and the service counter was quite bad.. I can speak mandarin like other Chinese but sometimes I don't really understand their accents and I will usually asked a few times to make sure so this lady that I just uploaded the pictures was quite rude and gets frustrated after I asked a few times.. she doesn't seems to be very patience and almost shouted at me when the tickets runs out and asked me to purchase one.. in the end I didn't get the tickets and get in
This is a great museum that focuses on the region and its role in the history of China over the past ~10000 years. I was amazed by just how important it has been. Very good layout and has a fair amount of English content descriptions. A visit is a great compliment to the much more famous terra cotta soldiers/emperor"s burial sites. Tickets are required and if you are a senior they are free, but a bit complicated to get--several lines and lines may be long. A guide can be useful but seems audio guides only in Chinese.
1) Great Museum and book ahead before you go - need to bring ID etc. 2) Set time booking - so arrive at the agreed timing 3) Very busy even at a non holiday period - so expect crowds 4) When I went Oct 2023 - it was very warm inside building, no fans or aircon, so be prepared. Seating is only in the main entrance with the giant stone statue. 5) Dont walk the Xi'an City walls and then go straight to Museum - you will be very tired (lesson learnt)

This museum is a treasure trove of ancient Chinese artefacts. Beside the Terracotta Army excavation site, this is a must visit attraction in your Xi'an itinerary. There's a section where visitors can get a close-up viewing of the Terracotta soldiers and horses . Spend at least half-a-day in order to view other magnificent exhibits. Be there early and queue for your free entrance pass.
The museum is not foreigner friendly. Warning: you need to book tickets in advance. For someone has no Chinese phone number or WeChat, plus their official English website booking page broke, it is impossible to book a ticket. I tried to explain at the ticket service but couldn't get the same day ticket. Best they could do is book one for me in three days.

With Bryan Bai private tour guide, obtaining tickets was a breeze. Once inside, his knowledge and enthusiasm made our exploration of the exhibits so much more interesting and informative. We could spend as much or as little time in any area as we chose. It's a very well laid out and fascinating museum.
Well worth visiting. Entry to most of the museum is free but you need to present a passport or ID card. One room required a ticket to be purchased but this needed to be done at the entrance where there was a queue. If I was going again or…... 详情
The key draw, of course, is the abundance of artifacts, but that is hindered by the insanely long lines to get in for free, and the absence of a clear way to buy tickets so that you don't have to wait in line. Furthermore, the long lines…... 详情
Brilliant museum but the queue to get in where out of control took almost 2 hours. Wouldn't recommend in the peak of heat or if you can try book tickets. Otherwise this museum is brilliant and well worth going.

Awesome museum. First it is free, though there would always be 30-meter line-up queue to get the free ticket. While you could buy a ticket for an extra exhibition entrance with 20yuan. It is real bargain to avoid the queuing.…...

Very good museum showing excavations from the four big dynasties (Zhou, Han, Sui, Tang) that had their capital in Xi'an. Very well preserved artifacts. Free entry with Chinese ID card or foreigners' passport.

It's best to visit this museum before deciding if you want to head out to the Terracotta Army excavation site. You can see the statues much much closer here and in comfort too.
The treasures within make it worth the wait outside ! You will be connected to the Tang Dynasty, one of the most creative ones in China’s illustrious past.
An interesting museum specially focus two chinese greatest dynasties of Qing and Tang. Online booking as a good option avoid long queue for entrance.
Great museum to learn the history of China from the beginning to Tong dynasty. However, must visit around off hours or there are too many people
One of the better museums I've encountered in China, with nicely designed lighting, and effective displays of a bewildering array of artefacts.

Countless artifacts from ancient Shaanxi and huge crowds to see them. Do not omit to visit the section with the wall and scroll paintings!
I'm here now... 291118. No queue at ticket counter. Nice cooling weather. Ticket is free but need your passport for the tickets.
wonderful experience travelling back to old times. so much to see, feel and discover yourself.
Very crowded .love all the exhibits
