We had an extraordinary visit and an unexpected amazing guide! When we came, there were few people visiting the museum at the time. The people working in the museum were very friendly. They gave us a short introduction about the museum. When we were about to start our self guided visit, Mr. Donald came from the second floor and told us that he was going to be our guide. And what an extraordinary guide. He was fun, smart, entertaining, and very knowledgeable about the art, the history, the museum, and everything. So nice and friendly we simply loved him. We were a group of 12 (all family), including a 2.5 year old baby, three teens, and a 73 years old grandpa. Everyone enjoyed it, he encouraged everyone to ask questions engaging us in the tour and history of the museum. Truly great and memorable. The exhibits are absolutely great, beautiful, and amazing pieces of art. Even the museum store has great items to take home. We 100 % recommend it.

Our visit to the AAM was pleasant despite the temps in the building. It felt like there was no air. 4 stars were given because the staff was amazing! They greeted you and was prepared with COVID readiness and gave great direction on what to expect. The exhibits were good. I love the newness The Dynasty Exhibit brought to the art experience. You'll have to visit to know. It was great to see the eye of the up and coming artists that won the 26th Carroll Harris Simms National Black Art Competition and Exhibition and my personal favorite was Facing the Rising Sun Freedman's Cemetery Exhibit because it showcased tangible and experienced life of a Black Community in Dallas. Please note the hours are currently different than what is posted on Google Maps.
One of the saddest representations of a museum I've ever experienced. We arrived within 30min of the museum closing, and we're greeted stating they were setting up for an event. We were still allowed to stroll to the 2nd floor museum area. It was literally underwhelming. The only thing that was remotely worth it to see was the display about Freedman cemetery. They put more care into the event they were hosting than the museum itself. This should be called an event hall. Don't waste your time.

We were greeted at the entrance and told about the exhibits. It was so wonderful being able to see pictures, read about, watch videos, and view art about the right history of people of the African diaspora right here in Dallas, Texas. I hope they expand because I know there is so much more to be told but given that this museum is free - I was blown away. I even got some artisan and cultural gifts for my family in their bookstore.

I loved this place but when you walk in wheres the love? Hmmmmm? I didn't see any confirmation of love just political hate and controversial confusion Self expression good of wonderful art I loved loved but the man at the entrance was so abrasive angry wowwww!!! Leave your purse backpack at front get a ticket what's that about at the fair. We were already checked at the front. Weird vibes no African traditional art. Celebrate African tribes nothing just modern political mediocre emotional times let's celebrate the source!!!
This was an experience that one must do while visiting in Dallas. It was amazing and filled with so much truth, knowledge, wisdom, and facts. It was a free event, and leaving a tip was welcomed. I was empowered, and many thoughts were confirmed. I am so grateful to be an educated black woman. Our culture and history exude wealth.

Compared to other African American Museums in the united states this one lacks educational value to empower you. It's definitely due for an upgrade. We have so much history in Dallas not reflected in this museum. The staff are rude and expect donations which really ruins the experience.

The museum has many photographs of African American citizens. Many facial pictorials can be seen on several levels of the wall. Most of Athletic individuals, and various others. Free admission doing fair. Book store closes early, no food or drinks allowed inside. Due leave a good tip since there's no charge.

I enjoyed my visit here. I was immediately greeted by a staff member that told me about the intentional design of the building as well as a review of the permanent and current exhibits. My favorite on exhibit was the newspaper tapestry and Chuckie's Inside Out exhibit.

A very historic place of African American history. From quilts to books to paintings to the stories about the history behind Juneteenth and cementary it's a place to learn about African American culture and appreciate the continuous sacrifices and contributions of great African American public figures. I will definitely be back visiting this museum along with my family for a long time.
Very educational and well kept museum with a helpful staff. We were welcomed quickly and advised of the current exhibits. My family appreciated the well preserved pieces of history from Dallas and seeing all of the Folk art. A great and educational experience.

The African American museum was great! I decided to go early Saturday morning as soon as it opened. There are some great exhibitions at this location. The details regarding the black history of Dallas is a story that you would want to hear. There is no entry fee, but we recommend that you do donate to the museum. Overall, it was an amazing experience!
I enjoyed my visit to the African American museum. I read a few other reviews regarding content, and I would agree more would be nice. However, the visit there is free unlike many other museums. Keeping in mind, that unless they charge or are receiving nice donations they will have limited displays. I think they've done well. More
I've had the pleasure to visit this place for several events but also just as an admirer of the art. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Recommend you check it out as there is already something taking place there for everyone. It's a great outing.

Black Cowboys an American story was amazing I enjoyed everything about. The gentleman at the front desk (sorry I forgot his name)greeted us with a lot of insightful information and knowledge of the entire building. We had a great time and I will be bringing my nephew back with me very soon. More
The displays are exquisite, the ambiance breathtaking and it provides a wealth of knowledge and a supreme cultural experience! Everyone - no matter age, gender, race, should experience what AAM has to offer!

It was a nice place and there were some cool artifacts. However, I expected more and wanted to see more. There was a lack of statues, artwork by non local artists, and history of African American culture, etc. It was nice but I think more is needed.
Even though I came on a day when some of the galleries were closed to prepare for new exhibits, there were many spaces to enjoy. The folk art exhibition featured many artists from Dallas, as well as furniture from North Carolinian furniture
Great museum; specially if you feel like you need to educate yourself more and see a different pov from your own. It’s a must for everyone kids to adults. The current expo Men Of Change is inspiring, to admire, reflect, question and engage.
Visiting this musuem has been the highlight of my weekend. My fiancé surprised me with tickets yesterday and I must say I learned so much. The Kinsey family have dedicated their lives to travel and learning about our culture. As a result,
Wonderful place to take your family and learn some of our history. They have one of a items no other museum have.

Ajai, he was a tour guide, love all he informed the students (13-19) on historical facts of the city of Dallas. Lovely designed! A must visit if local residents or visiting Dallas. Here is a taste of what you see in the photos taken.
Loved our tour and our tour guide was very nice. I wish I remembered the young guys name. He took his time to explain each section and answer questions. We plan to go back and spend more time on the our own and just take it all in.
The experience was nice. An interesting walk around. The staff at the entrance was helpful. The facility was very clean. My children had an awesome experience. I just wish that the gift shop had a bigger variety of items to buy.
I enjoyed visiting along with my granddaughter. I had a very nice lady who help explain exhibits.

This has been my favorite museum experience in Dallas . The museum featured culturally sound African American art work and a family friendly environment.
The events they have are well put together. I just wish more black professionals knew about the events and attended them.
