Over the years, in both the original location nearby, and in their current home, I've paid a variety of types of visits to Books With Pictures. I've been to fundraisers, author/artist signing events, come in to pick up special order items, and also just dropped in to browse. Neither my spouse nor I are artists or authors, but we know a number of people in Portland whose work can be found on the shelves here - it is truly a reflection of the city in which it is located. My latest visit was to pick up a special order item. The web site makes it very easy to make a request that is fully customized for each item, depending on whether it's in stock, available to order, or perhaps no longer available. This is a wonderful part of a city populated with readers, and with creators.
The staff are incredibly helpful and kind. I love this place so much and will do what I can when I can to support it. I'm new to graphic novels but not once have I been made to feel like a "noob" or inferior for not knowing a lot about about the comic and graphic novel industries. If anything that made the staff even more excited and happy to help me. The first time I was in, the manager or owner gave me issue 1 of a series called Saga and now I'm hooked. They also have gifts for all ages. I'm 31 and have gotten Christmas gifts there for friends my age and my 4 year old niece, so there's something for all ages and expierience levels. I implore you to check out this wonderful store on 12th and division.
I was walking past the store and notice there was broken glass in the driveway I went inside and asked the lady that was working there did you know there was broken glass in the driveway she said yes we know about it I again send so you know there's broken glass in the driveway she looked at me again and said yes we know about it. I take it as they know there's broken glass in their driveway and they don't care if their customers drive over the broken glass, as they knew about it and made no attempt to clean it you can see in the photos there's a lot of broken glass
Simply one of the greatest comic stores on earth, with one of the greatest owners of all time. So knowledgeable, friendly, and has created a genuine community here, from creatives to nerds alike. I even moved to Pennsylvania recently and I still get my books shipped out here from them! The company's story on how they kept up business during the pandemic and how they ended up in this iconic building is one of my favorite stories to share, ask them sometime!
Think I found my new favorite comic store! Went in today for my first time to pick up the new volume 10 release of Saga and was so happy to take a moment to peruse. I found a couple things I really enjoyed and the cashier saw something I picked out and set me up with the first copy so I can read them in order. I also went and got a killer grilled cheese from the food carts next door, it was a great experience
The store was delightful. The sales associate (Kitty) was knowledgeable, helpful, pleasant, professional, and generally amazing. I found perfect gifts for three people, and I have no doubt I could have found something for everyone in my life. If you are going to buy things for people, and those people have any interest in words and/or pictures, I strongly recommend starting here.
I have never experienced such a lovely bookshop. The staff was fabulously knowledgeable, The selection is spectacular, and the vibes of the place make me feel so very much at home. Inclusiveness isn't just about showing everybody that they're equal, but it also includes making people feel like they belong. This is it, the place to be. No wonder they win so many awards.
This shop is my favorite go to comic place in town, mainly for two reasons. Firstly, they focus in on local artists and authors and have a great selection of more feminist and queer friendly titles than your big standard comic shop. Secondly, the owner is an awesome person who always is super helpful, has great suggestions, and is interesting to talk to!
The store is clean, bright, and friendly. The staff are ready and excited to help. It is easy find what you are looking for. There are helpful suggestions, comfortable places to sit, and books for all ages and a wide range of interests. It is one of the best comic shops in Portland.
Great selection in a beautiful old slice of cheese building, kind and knowledgeable employees and ownership (with a dope record shop in the basement)! This is the local woman-owned comic shop of my childhood dreams, and a wonderful resource for creative queer nerds …
I love stopping in here after a waffle from honeycuspe around the corner :) Super friendly, knowledgable staff and great selection of books for kids and adults alike. Welcoming & inclusive space...such a gem at this corner of Ladd's!
A great place to pick up graphic novels. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, too! Like me, they just love comics. Give great suggestions if you don’t know where to start, too!
Great staff, good energy, great vibes; extremely supportive and protective of queer youth and their trans community. Everyone who works there is extremely accommodating and caring.
Amazing selection and event programming. Do you need a welcoming environment, with not only comics, manga, kids books, and zines? This is the spot for you.
Love the name and I love their selection of books. Staff was able to provide a solid recommendation based off the obscure titles I enjoy reading.
This place is so great. Salespeople are very helpful and helped me pick out some great books for my step daughter who is trans. Thanks so much.
Awesome inclusive comic shop with an excellent selection - big zine and manga sections too! Wonderful staff, very helpful and pleasant.
Fantastic comic and graphic novel shop. Sellers are always friendly and have a recommendation or two if you need it.
Best comic book shop in the world! Great selection, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ forward, fun events!
Amazing store. Spectacular staff. Uncanny inventory. Totally awesomeness.
