Dundurn Castle is a historic neoclassical mansion on York Boulevard in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The 18,000-square-foot (1,700 m2) house took three years and $175,000 to build, and was completed in 1835.[1] The forty room castle featured the latest conveniences of gas lighting and running water.[1] It is currently owned by the City of Hamilton, which purchased it in 1899 or 1900 for $50,000.[2][1] The City has spent nearly $3 million renovating the site to make it open to the public.[1] The rooms have been restored to the year 1855 when its owner Sir Allan Napier MacNab, 1st Baronet, was at the height of his career. Costumed interpreters guide visitors through the home, illustrating daily life from the 1850s. The Duchess of Cornwall, a descendant of Sir Allan MacNab, is the Royal Patron of Dundurn Castle. Dundurn Castle, a Regency house, was completed in 1835 by architect Robert Charles Wetherell.[3] MacNab purchased the property from Richard Beasley, one of Hamilton's early settlers, when financial difficulties forced Beasley to sell lands at Burlington Heights (present day Dundurn Park), and MacNab built Dundurn Castle on the foundations of Beasley's brick home.[4] Once built, Dundurn Castle became famous all over the country for its grand entertainments. Sir John A. Macdonald and King Edward VII are among those who have been entertained there.[5] Sir Allan MacNab, later Premier of the united Province of Canada between 1854 and 1856, hired architect Robert Wetherall and construction of this stately home was completed in 1835. The pillars and portico were added in 1855 as part of the preparations for the wedding of MacNab's daughter Sophia.[6] After MacNab's death, the estate was used as an institution for deaf mutes, then was purchased in 1872 by Donald McInnes, who sold Dundurn to the City of Hamilton in 1899.[2] In the late 1960s, it was restored as a Centennial project. It is now designated as a National Historic Site of Canada. A Strathspey for bagpipes was composed in honour of Dundurn Castle.[7]

Excellent place to go, you will need 1 hr aprox for you visit no more than that. Each tour is around 20 to 30 minutes with a guide. It is very interesting, i really enjoyed a lot and my 4 kids too, they also have 2 exposition like militar museum that is interactive especially for the kids, they can play with some toys and music instruments etc. The mansion was very cool, and the tour is very informative. They also offer some cookies in the kitchen, that was very nice. Great experience! For a very affordable price we paid 32 dolars for a group of 2 adults and 4 kids.

This ancient villa or Dundurn / house on the hill, was a great visit into the livings of the historic family. With 42 rooms, including potties i figure, they had a lot of space. Well decorated and restored. The tour guide Jennifer, was extremely friendly, informative, and must importantly not boring. Three levels of bedrooms, living rooms, tea rooms and the living quarters of the 10 or so support maids, butlers, cooks, instilled a sense of what it might have been to eat, sleep and live here at the Dundurn Castle.

Incredible how far back simplistic inventions were a constant inspiration. All made to make life easier, in the kitchens, bathing, heating and even private waterclosets. 1800's paved the way for these improvements to be understood and painstakingly researched.
Restrooms
On premises.
Dog-friendliness
To walk the grounds seemed ok.
Picnic area
Just bring a blankly for lunch under some incredibly beautiful trees mid tour. PLEASE DO NOT LITER the few who spoil it for the many.

Nice step back in history ... guide was very knowledgeable and the kitchen garden is a site to see. The woman at the gift shop and ticket taker needs a major refresher in customer service ... poor way to greet your guests for the day .. 2 guests called her out on her rudeness and she doubled down on her poor customer service by snapping back at them ... shocking but don't let her spoil your day

Amazing place.Make sure to bring your ID card if you are a student at McMaster University as they provide a free tour. Recently, they have changed their policy as anyone having a Hamilton library card can also avail a free your. It was a great experience especially knowing about the McNab family and their struggle. Some of the articles inside the castle will give a sense of luxury.

Built in 1830s this castle connected with British royalties is a must-watch for those who would like to have a peek into Sir Allan MacNab's life, to learn history and technologies used, and to have closer look at the everyday artifacts. The castle also hosts a small museum in the Information centre for First World War. Don't miss that too. You won't be disappointed.

This is an amazing place to visit. There is so much culture in Dundurn Castle and it would be amazing to visit the museum with one of the guided tours. It has a nice trail that joins the waterfront trail and you can enjoy both the view and the walk. When we got here, there was a large filming crew filming beside the castle which was interesting to watch.

  • Devin Brazier

Awesome place. The house is beautifully restored to give visitors insight into what life was like for the colonial elite in the Victorian era. The best part is the guides, who take you through something like 40+ rooms and recite the history of the house from memory and with great enthusiasm. Easily comparable to Casa Loma but greatly underappreciated.

  • R. Chi

Awesome place to go for a walk and enjoy the trails and scenery. The Dundurn Castle kitchen garden is a delight especially during growing season. You can see the lake from multiple vantage points and the property itself is beautiful. No restrooms on site. Great picnic location with benches and tables placed randomly.
Restrooms
No restrooms.

Absolutely love ❤️ the experience of visiting this beautiful place, had no idea about very early history of Hamilton before visiting. Amazing, knowledgeable and friendly staff on site available for group tours, willing to share and answer the questions. Definitely recommend for children 10+ to learn and explore the very early Canadian heritage.

  • Stefan Spolnik

One of my favorite sites in the city. Lots of history stretching from pre european settlements through the battle of 1812 and on through the victorian era. West of the park you can see more of the ramparts from the British fort that once existed there. At one time the walls surrounded the grounds of the park but were removed in the 1960s~c.

Dundurn Castle is just wonderful to experience, especially at Christmas time. They have now renovated and opened new rooms to view and walk through. So if you have not attended the castle in more than 2 years or have never been to Dundurn Castle, take the time to visit with family or friends or even by yourself.

  • Joni Jae Thomas Vultao

We took one of the ghost tours at the Dandurn Park. It was a great history lesson. Loved how the tour guides were all dressed and were so knowledgeable about all the things at Dundurn. Would love to take the tour during the day to see the difference. There was so much history, art, and stories that went with it.

  • Sweet November

Beautiful place. Well kept grounds. View of the lake. We witnessed 2 weddings there, obviously a great venue. Lots of beautiful flowers, a garden that belongs to the castle and they grow stuff there for sale and own use. Saw people with pets, walking with strollers. Great spot. We enjoyed our time there.

  • Scott Travers

Really beautiful park overlooking the water. We did a tour of the castle and I highly recommend it for some history of Hamilton. The war museum is also on site and we learned with a Hamilton library card the historical museums are included so totally worth a library card.

A great place to walk around and take photos. The building itself has beautiful architecture and the grounds surrounding it are well kept and maintained. There's usually a garden that you can walk through and tours but it seems they've stopped for the time being.

  • nicole99 nicole99

A beautiful surprise to have such a knowledgeable and personable tour guide, all decked out in the dress of that era. It was fascinating to learn about the lifestyle in the 1850's. The mansion and area have been well kept. You won't be disappointed.

  • Janice C

It will see better days again. It's unfortunate that the grounds/garden couldn't be maintained for the public while we're all spending so much time gathering outdoors. * I have been back again more recently and things appear to have improved.

  • Fallen Steel

Visited the castle on May 14, 2022 @ 2:00pm, the amount of history displayed in regards to the early 1800's and what it was like in the life of nobility was fascinating. The tour guide was very informative and provided plenty of details and

Great place for having a picnic. The castle is nice but the timings seem too short, it closes quite early. We went in the evening so did not get to go inside.

Overall it was interesting. Many rooms were roped off with no access due to construction. The tour group size was too large if you ask me at 16 individuals.
