A city block of hardware, lighting, doors/windows and period correct pieces for any project. Unfortunately not very helpful, not very honest and not interested in sales. Go with a friend and see how many conflicting prices you get.. Tried to tell me a pot metal spray painted chandelier was a high price solid brass piece. When I pointed out the obvious he said, "oh, well I thought that was a different one". Brought our Art Deco chandelier for new slip shades. Would not assist us and when we finally cornered someone they literally told us, "they don't make those anymore" to which we tried to look shocked and replied, "REALLY! How amazing! So we should be looking at antique hardware stores for assistance then?.....not here?" Today was our 4th and final trip. Picked up the chandeliers we purchased 6 weeks ago and wanted help finding pocket door hardware. Instead we were told how difficult pocket doors are and how.old they are and that there is no such thing as a locking pocket door set so we would have to "get creative". OMG. I am done. We are restoring a historical George F. Barber Queen Anne Victorian and we are not stupid.. Sadly this place has taken all of their potential and shoved it somewhere useless.

I just had the most amazing experience at Hippo. For the last 2 years I have been living with a broken mortise lock on the front door of my 100year old house. I’ve had multiple people look at it, including a locksmith, and no one could fix it. The only option appeared to be a full door replacement. Looking on line for ideas I came across a review of Hippo Hardware. I packed up my lock, went in and was directed to Colin. Thats when the magic happened: Disassembling the entire mechanism, Colin identified the problem, scavenged replacement parts from other old locks, machined pieces that didn’t quite fit, cleaned and oiled everything and suddenly I not only had a cassette that would simply fill the big empty space in my door, I had a lock that worked the way it was originally designed - far beyond my hopes and expectations!! Thank you Hippo and thank you, Colin!!!

The staff at Hippo hardware takes an uncanny interest in any project you may bring them. The bigger the puzzle, the more they thrive. Tyler in the plumbing department is the epitome of this. He spent at least an hour and a half going over the various options with us for adding a shower to our claw foot tub, eventually converting us into clawfoot tub enthusiasts ourselves. He provided expert advice, and is frankly freaking hilarious. A little, odd, but very funny. Hippo will be a frequent stop for us as we improve our 1907 home. Prices are competitive with online options, but here, you know what you're getting will solve all your problems, and the staff will take time to make sure you're up to the task. Only word of caution, if the staff is busy helping someone, it could be a while, because they tend to get lost in their job.

I had forgotten what a treasure Portland has in Hippo Hardware. Thinking I would have to replace a door knob and lock set from my 1912 house, I initially went to Rejuvenation Hardware, but was unconvinced the new set they wanted to order for me was the right thing, and so left empty handed. Then I went into Hippo Hardware and was told to bring my old set in for repair, which I gladly did. "The Kid" expertly diagnosed and fixed it, fashioning an out of stock spring it needed from a wire, for an extremely reasonable price! Just looking around in there is an amazing experience and was a good reminder for me that buying something new isn't better than fixing something that is over 100 years old but probably was far better quality originally than anything you can buy new these days. Thank you Hippo Hardware!

I was a loyal hippo enthusiast for two decades. I enjoyed shopping the vast selection of poorly organized salvage, and restoring hardware and parts I've found for use in my home (personal) restorations. I also enjoyed restoring and cobbling together new lights from purchased parts. Sadly, over the past couple of years the prices have been increasing at an alarming pace. Today, I was insulted for the last time. My recommendation - don't support this overpriced shop any longer. In response to the owner/associate who replied from Hippo Hardware... I did not purchase an item at Hippo Hardware nor did I treat any employee disrespectfully during my final visit. It appears you have confused me with another customer. Hippo Hardware's response solidifies my decision to take my business elsewhere.

Two vintage door knobs stopped working for two different reasons thinking I might have to replace all of them (to match) I looked online- $400-1000 estimate. I am so incredibly thankful that I just happened upon Hippo hardware and specifically help from Colin! $43.00 30minutes in store and a couple hours of my fumbling at home ☑️ it’s done! Colin gave me some trouble shooting possibilities and (to my surprise) I was able to successfully fix one door knob myself from home! The second knob he diagnosed without even seeing the knob and when I brought it in he even cleaned the 100 years of sloppy paint brush over cast off this knob hasn’t shined like this in my lifetime but now I feel like I should bring all of them in for a reasonably priced clean . I couldn’t be more pleased!

If you enjoy a trip to the hardware store, or perhaps some old house nostalgia, THIS is the place you need to visit (again and again). Classic or modern light fixtures? Of course! Tons of replacement turn-of-the-century door knobs, locks, escutcheons, door bells, door hinges, reclaimed lumber and molding, doors of various descriptions, plumbing fixtures, classic kerosene lamps and accessories (for when the power goes out), and so much more. We had to match a light shade, and the particular style is difficult to find. Hippo Hardware to the rescue! We found what we needed and some delightful replacements to give another light fixture a different look. It's just fun to go and browse, too, because you never know what treasures you will find.

Came in the store and was instantly greeted by an engaging, knowledgeable, down to earth, and just plain fun to talk to, staff. Left $2600 poorer, but 100 times happier! Found the coolest damn antique hanging lamp, two antique candle holder sconces that were a dragon motif and three period piece door pulls for the original cabinets in our 1927 bungalow's bathroom that we are remodeling. What a fun experience. Can't recommend this place highly enough. Modern stuff has its place, but these guys have original, unique, quality stuff, at reasonable prices you just won't find anywhere else, and the good conversation is worth the trip, even if you don't buy something. If you're nice to the staff, you might even get a hug. We did! :)

  • Wanda Love

Staff extremely rude...very disappointing. I went looking for a glass piece for an old pull down lamp. Staff that my friend and I asked to help were rude and brusque. Clearly it was unimportant and beneath them to be bothered to help. I use to love to go to hippo hardware and look for treasures. My friend was equally disappointed. We were looking for a fun day and couldn't wait to get out of the store. If people don't enjoy their jobs and working with the public then maybe it is time to get new jobs. So bummed to have this experience at a really cool place. Please try to get some friendly going. Sad to say we won't be back!!!!

  • Jerrold Johnson

I e-mailed a photo of a light fixture I had purchased for our 95 year old house, as the innards didn't work. Indy e-mailed me back promptly and said she was certain they had the parts. I then explained we were in Albuquerque and could not go in to get the part. She said she would have someone contact me on Monday (this was on a Sunday). Brandy contacted me on Monday and said she had the part, pre-wired it and would ship it out immediately. We received it, installed it and I couldn't be happier. This was all done by e-mail, and was painless ( for me), and I really appreciate the service.

  • Beth Lacey-Snow

Hippo is AWESOME!!!! I found 3 glass lamp shades that went together for our livingroom floor lamps. Jennifer is AWESOME in her knowledge of the different kinds of styles an types that you could possibly want or need. And the best part, if you don't like it, or if it doesn't work, once you get it home, take it back with your receipt, an they will buy it back. I could spend hours upon hours just looking at all the cool items in there!!!! You even get a history lesson, if you want to hear the stories one gentleman has to share!!!! I learned 2 stories!!!! Happy Hippo Hunting!!!!

  • Lisa korhonen

I believe the owner pulled a fast one on me had a truck full of stuff to sell thought he was only getting a couple of the things I had he set what I knew aside with some other stuff I really didn't see him get and said I'll give you 50 for this little did I know out of the 11 I had he took all but 5 and only gave me 50$ he has similar on line for 45 for just 1 that leaves him 5 and 3 of them are more going to fetch alot more my bad for trusting that he would be fair do he makes hundreds on my stuff while I get 50 moral .. seller beware ..

  • Jessie Brainerd

We went to Hippo for shelves for speakers and came out with shelves and hardware for less than $20. The shelves were actually solid wood cabinet doors from a house built in the 20s. When Bobby saw the brackets we'd picked out, he sent us outside with some sandpaper to rough them up, then spray-painted them for us. He also threw in the screws and a screwdriver bit for our drill. This, on top of all the free advice he gave us on installing the shelves! Fantastic experience, will shop here again!

  • John Kutasz

Hippo is probably the place I miss most when I'm out of town. I know, "why would you miss a hardware store?" - but when I'm visiting relatives and trying to help out with a project in the house I grew up in, my first inclination is "Hippo will have that (insert name of old house part)". Then, I remember that a big box store is pretty much my only option in that particular time zone. So, thank you to Hippo for being my go-to spot for whatever thing I need to keep my old house creaking along.

  • Karla Chou

Amazing experience! I placed an order for an antique doorknob spindle online and included the desired spindle length in the Comments section (because Hippo Hardware will trim it for free!). When I saw that my order shipped out the same day, I worried that perhaps they missed my note. Well...my spindle arrived (on time) and it was the exact length that I requested. Needless to say, I was absolutely delighted!! Great service, prompt shipping, and a terrific product. Thank you! :D

  • Matt Morrison

One of the last remaining bastions of old Portland. Perfect for somebody restoring a period home, or even for design inspiration. You’ll see fixtures of all kind, including toilets, bathtubs, sconces, fans, handles and pulls. I noticed a heavy emphasis on Victorian styles, with patterns from after 1940ish a little more scarce. It’s in a beautiful old building with creaky wood floors, the staff are fantastic too. Five stars for being such a unique experience.

  • Rob Melton

Hippo Hardware, one of Portland's original salvage companies, has something you need for your vintage home or your retro remodel. There are so many nooks and crannies that the first thing you should do is tell a friendly staff member the problem you are trying to solve or what you are looking for. They will direct you to the right place. Whether you need to match a knob or door or are just looking for a rusty spike for an art project, you'll find it here.

  • Hayli Ballentine

Hands down, Hippo is the best salvage in the area. I was able to get all of my original kitchen cabinet drawer pulls and cabinet pulls at Hippo for a great price. The lighting level has been the source of several of our fixtures when all other hunting avenues had run dry. They’ve also rehabilitated some of our light fixtures expertly! The space is perfection and the stock they have delivers at a good price. Please keep them in business by shopping here!!

  • Lindy Foster

Hippo Hardware is an awesome place for architectural salvage of every kind! We lucked into it when were looking for used furniture, and the guys at What's New suggested we check out Hippo. They have a huge selection of old doors and windows, plus lamps and lighting fixtures of all kinds. We're going back to look for antique hardware for some older furniture as soon as we get measurements and pictures. The antique hardware selection is out of this world!

  • Jamey Collins

Very cool place! Very helpful staff. Some of the items are still in their old, vintage packaging and even displayed on or in old vintage rustic wooden/metal cabinets/shelves. Most of the hardware is vintage and authentic antique. Some hardware are also reproductions but seem less expensive than any other place you go to. This place is a must-see-visit for anyone who loves historical American antique hardware. I will definitely be back!

  • Gabe S

Called to inquire if they carried parts for lighting fixtures in general. The guy refused to answer, saying he didn't know because he couldn't see the part I was talking about over the phone. I understand how phones work, I was just wondering if they carried parts like that in general, or if it would be a waste of time to come in. Most unhelpful customer service I've ever encountered. Won't be giving them any more of my business.

  • slick slack

the place is a bit cluttered, but staff is helpful. i've personally noted they don't sell shower curtains, but they've got a bit of an array of shelving-pegs, and a decent return policy. that older gentleman that runs the cash register mid-way through the store is such a pleasure to be around ... always so life-loving and jovial. even if they don't have what you're looking for, this guy'll do what he can to brighten your day.

  • David Moore

A classic Portland shop. Lots of old and hard to find vintage hardware stuff. This is the place for all things old. They have an amazing selection that spans multiple stories. Even if you don't think you need anything, you will find something here you can't live without. Prices are often negotiable. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Every trip is a memorable experience.

  • Rachel Phariss

An indespensible resource for anyone who lives in a home that sometimes needs repairs or just needs a bit of whimsy for any space. We've had vintage door knobs repaired/replaced, light fixtures rewired, found fixtures and hardware for every part of our home. I've even purchased items to repurpose as bird baths! Definitely worth a visit even if you are just in town for a few days.

  • Vickie Demmitt

I shipped two sets of antique ceramic sconces from Ohio. Got them back today, rewired and ready to mount. They did a great job not only on the sconces but also in the process of communicating what they could do with replacement parts. I am more than pleased with how they turned out. If I ever travel to Oregon, Hippo Hardware is at the top of my "must visit" list!

  • Terri Hohl

What a great place!! Do you have an old home? This place has knobs hinges sinks lights but most important knowledgeable people to help with your era of home. And they buy old stuff too! Doors, latches, lamps. They fix lamps $40!!! Plus parts another $4. I think they fix old locks too. You have to check it out!!

  • Nader Absood

The best, friendliest, coolest, uniquest hardware store you could hope you find. They'll help you diagnose and identify old hardware problems, fix what can be fixed, or sell you what you need to replace and what needs replacing. And a dollar goes much farther here than it does at those big box stores.

  • Jeff Kranski

I'd been wanting to check this place out for a while and finally popped in on a whim to grab a lampshade. Ended up spending an hour just checking out one part of one floor inside and am excited for the next time I visit. Excellent, unique selection of all sorts of architectural fixtures and hardware.

  • Jordan Austin

My go-to store to find items that match my 1915 home, or buy vintage lighting. Hippo hardware has old door knobs, door bells, nuts and bolts, doors and windows, baths and toilets, and even more! You have to visit this store, it's fun and the people are nice and knowledgeable. Go here and enjoy!

  • Mandi Buckley

I could not have had a better experience at Hippo Hardware! Colin helped me from start to finished with picking a door knob for my salon. He was SO knowledgeable, charming, and has excellent taste. I’m obsessed with this store and will go back for anything hardware for my salon. Ask for Colin!

  • Chris Clements

Neat selection of retro hardware. Overpriced. One creepy display in a bath tub which illustrates someone's hatefulness, and if had depicted anything other than a Catholic nun there would have been outrage and news stories that would have put the place out of business. oooh, struck a nerve.

  • Gary Barnes

Ordered a spindle for my bathroom door handle for our house that was built in 1913...the team at Hippo was amazing to work with via email and even cut the 4" spindle to match my 3.5" spindle perfectly...installed today and went on perfectly...thank you! Also, very reasonable pricing...

  • Mike Bolle

This place is a awesome walk through time!! All the hard to find fixtures, knobs, handle, fixtures and other knick-knacks if you are restoring a home. And just a interesting place to walk through if you're a looky-loo. Also a great place for artists and people who create stuff.

  • Megan Berry

Colin crushing it again! Look at how this hundred (plus) year old exterior door knob came in busted and bruised in color from daily use all that time… half hour or so and it’s shining like it’s 1920 again! Thank you for awesome customer service and affordable work every time!

  • la mer

You can get lost in here for hours. So much to look at and you’ll walk out with something interesting. Colin was awesome and helped me find some period looking hardware for my vintage mirror. You can tell the people who work here take pride and know what they’re doing!

  • Duane Clayton

I use to live in Portland so on our trip from Texas we made the required appointment to stop and get some parts we need in our house remodeling. They never showed up waited almost 45 min no show, would not answer the phone or the ema we sent. Not impressed with them.

  • Keith Lowry (Krypto Keith)

Wow! What an incredible collection of vintage hardware and so much other stuff from the good ole days. If you are looking for something for an old home this place likely has what you are looking for! What an incredible parts source for old homes and their owners.

  • nathan passarelli

I will absolutely always love hippo hardware, my grandma used to take me here when I was a kid, and I have always absolutely loved it. So many nick nacks and amazing things to find. You can spend hours here and then leave with all the things you want and need!

  • Dan A

Amazing building with plenty to see. We went in expecting to spend about 15 minutes and stayed for about an hour. It's cool to see all the fixtures and odd stuff they have, and the architecture of the building is just amazing, would love to own it as a house.

  • Diane Foster

They have very interesting lighting. Very few things are priced. They seem to make up a price when you bring it to the counter and they do not like to negotiate it's more a take it or leave it sort of thing. They have negotiated with me once or twice.

  • Constance Norona

Wowza. I knew it was cool by reputation, but then I went for help rehabbing a lamp. Prompt, and knowledgeable attention and everything we needed in house! Seriously earned 5 stars. Plus, I wanted to spend all day looking at the rest of the inventory!

  • Lori Sprague

I was looking for a bail for a antique side board I was refinishing. I knew that I could not match it exactly, it was purchased in the 70's at a auction and was from England. I found some pieces in different odds and ends for about 5.00. Thank you

  • Pete Brown

Hippo Hardware definitely has her thumb on the pulse of Portland: Recycling awesome antiques and selling them for a tidy profit! Great customer service and one of a kind items are quite awesome. Check out the top floor for a chandelier surprise.

  • Mary

Friendly staff, amazing collection of olden timey household fixtures for nearly every home project. Fun place to just browse for one of a kind pieces. Sustainable reuse of your no-longer-needed (in good condition) stuff for a store credit!

  • Kasey Ellingson

I love this place. It’s my go to for all the odds and ends I need to fix my 1916 craftsman bungalow. Colin is incredible with all the vintage locks and doorknobs I have brought him to get back into working order and even get new skeleton

  • Ruth Hendricks

Awesome place! Recommended by an electrician for repairs to a light fixture. They did it in record time - 3 hrs! They stock all sorts of lights, fixtures & specialize in all types of older style & antique glass shades. Custom work too!

  • David J. Weiner

This place is a gem. You can find a match for just about any old hardware you have. Also TONS of vintage lighting if you're looking to match existing old lighting, or just add new old lighting. Plus there's funny signs everywhere.

  • Tara Cope

Have always had great experiences here, but Colin blew me away with his help on getting some doorknobs set up for our front door! (It isn’t an easy task!) Truly knows his stuff and such a good person to work with. Thank you!!

  • Todd Quackenbush

One of the remaining non franchise stores that give Portland it's charm. These folks are so friendly and work with you to built, create or find unique parts for your project. It is well worth your time and money to go here.

  • Adam Lewis

Hippo Hardware is a Portland classic. A true treasure trove of used and some new replica hardware for old homes. Super knowledge staff has helped me fix and repair dozens of doors, lights, locks, and vents over the years.

  • - Webster

Covid has infected this location with a serious case of lame. It is for locals only. They are uniquely unaware that anyone has any interest in their store beyond that of a gas station that sells Hood Mountain keychains.

  • Ben Harrison

This place is awesome!! The guy that helped me find a new doorknob was so knowledgeable and helpful. I can't wait until I have another project that will bring me back to this store. Wish I could give more than 5 stars.

  • Isa Dean

Main place to go for all your old Portland house repairs and historically intact restorations. Lighting, Plumbing, door hardware, house numbers, cabinet hardware etc. Love it so much I bought a t- shirt!

  • Leigh Feldman

Talk about customer service! They recommended I buy two pieces - take them home and decide which one I liked better and return the other. This place is fantastic and the staff really knows their stuff.

  • Norene Scott Fuller

Always a pleasure to go to Hippos. James in plumbing took great care of me and even explained to me what to do to fix my shower diverter once I got back home. Works like a charm! Thank you!

This is a very interesting store. You can get lost in it with all the amazing wonderful things they have. Check my video out is the outside of the whole store. Show some great artwork.
