You would be hard pressed to find a worse business in Oregon. No one in Portland should support this company, owned by a conservative family and run by greedy corporate managers with no knowledge or ability for on-the-floor grocery operations. Reprehensible employee exploitation is policy at Market of Choice. This store has 4 managers who would rather take home a bonus for “cost savings” by hiding rags than let their employees maintain a clean, safe workspace. Safety violations are common here and the safety committee that encourages workers to submit concerns is a sham—they throw away any slips submitted that they do not consider valid, like the ones about the arc flash hazard at the electric panel or the blocked fire extinguisher, or the elevator’s broken floor. The store hires armed private security from an outside contractor who profile, stalk, and harass customers. Managers at the store carry water for corporate rather than looking after their subordinates. Almost zero communication about anything, ever. Everyone downtrodden constantly, being made to work with coworkers who have covid, not receiving a shift meal or even an employee discount. These workers are trying their best but are constantly dehumanized and neglected by management and corporate policy. Most departments in the store are understaffed. Rather than pay a living wage, offer incentives, and staff up their departments so that customers can try everything the store theoretically has to offer, management chooses instead of grind overworked skeleton shifts until workers burn out, then replaces them. It’s cheaper than doing it the right way. Market of Choice should go out of business, which it will if it continues this myopic spiral of cost-cutting and employee abuse.
What I saw of the market was very nice up until the moment my ankle was abruptly struck from behind by a cart being pushed by an employee. He halfheartedly said “I apologize” then continued into a back room with the cart stacked high with empty boxes. I stepped aside and pulled my sock down to see my Achilles tendon already bright red with the skin scraped aside. My wife went into the back room to talk to the employee who at least provided her with an alcohol wipe and band-aid but never came out to check on me. Finding a place to sit, there was an employee who did show concern a tried to find a manager but they were apparently busy. After about 15 minutes another employee, Theodora who also showed genuine concern, came by to fill out an incident report and take a picture of my injury. We were in the middle of an out of town visit to Portland when we stopped in the store and this incident happened. Luckily this didn’t require a trip to urgent care but it did affect our plans during the rest of our stay. This was definitely a preventable incident, the employee involved couldn’t see where they were going over the stack of boxes. Proper safety training and oversight should be a management priority and responsibility. This could happen again with a much worse result to a child, senior or you. I wouldn’t want this employee to lose their job because of what happened when some basic safety training or oversight could help them. I am extremely disappointed that there was no follow up with me. I provided my phone number and email address for the incident report but have never been contacted by anyone from Market of Choice.
It is such a treat to have a wonderful grocery store to shop at in the Goat Blocks neighborhood, the cashiers and other representatives are fantastic people and they always give a little boost to my day. Today I had the pleasure of working with one of the best human beings on this planet and its not the first time either, Simone M has a tremendous heart and a exponential impact on Whole Health Care, they are a wealth of knowledge and truly amazing at taking the time to help you on your path to wellness and recovery. I cannot thank you enough for your kindness and dedication to the community, you are one of a kind and an Angel on this Earth Many thanks to you for your truly exceptional service and to the entire team for being open today in the post “Snowmageddon” in Portland
I fail to understand why Market of Choice is so expensive in comparison to other grocery stores. For example, I paid nearly $6.00 for three yellow onions. That’s $2 per onion! According to national averages, that’s over 200% more per onion. This is just one example of MOC’s outrageous prices. Another example, they want $7.99 for a half gallon of organic milk! I seriously don’t understand how they can get away with such price gouging. Their prices are equal, if not higher, than places like New Seasons or Whole Foods despite having significantly lower quality offerings. I would only recommend MOC for essentials and nothing more. The only reason I’m giving two stars is because of their beer and wine selection, which is impressive and reasonably priced.
Loss prevention in this store has a consistent pattern of targeting customers of color, and they create unsafe situations for staff. I’m mad at myself for not speaking up sooner. I am a frequent customer, and I recently witnessed loss prevention target a front line staff member and retaliate against them with a suspension for not harassing a store customer in the check out lane. This employee voiced not feeling safe multiple times, and the store manager and loss prevention responded by suspending them. Unreal and completely unacceptable. I will be calling corporate and following up about this harassment and retaliation.
We enjoyed shopping here and will definitely be back. It's a very nice local market with excellent meats and produce, plus an outstanding variety of grocery items to choose from, especially coffee! Their bakery department will ruin your diet, from the look of it- the pastries and cakes were gorgeous. If they all taste as good as the peanut butter cookies we took home, then we're in trouble. We tried a loaf of their 9 grain bread also, and it is fantastic!! The staff was very friendly and helpful, the store was super clean and well tended, and there was plenty of parking.
Staff is not as intuitive to help with items out of a basket onto the belt. Spoke with manager it’s not a policy that customers must unload item in a basket to the belt So more like a worker preference. Furred brows and puzzlement. The courtesy check vibe has turned into a power struggle with todays market staff. Why would a company add conveyor belts to give a personal touch when you don’t get the personal touch all the time only to select people it’s not equitable I’m so used to the self check out I don’t have to talk to people that’s what I prefer.
This review is only for the take-away food, as I do not normally shop here for groceries. My god, I thought I was going to be saving money going in to MOC for my work lunch, but NOPE! 6.99 for a small soup, 11.99 per lb for salad (which most of the weight is taken up by a hard boiled egg). I ended up spending almost $30 with the addition of a sweet treat. I should have just spent that money at one of the local food carts. These prices are just insane. I expected like 4.99 for soup, and 7.99 for salad. What the hell.
Terrible place to shop, you're better off heading to 7/11. Overtly expensive, even for basic necessities. & on top of that, their security thinks it's their job to harass customers who were just being harassed by other customers, & the employees don't care. They actively encouraged the Security & the Customers to harass me & others who were passing through for the first time. Definitely my last time, especially with such horrible customer service being shown. If I could, I'd give -5 Stars for such an experience.
In our technological age , how difficult is it to communicate your holiday hours via 1. MOC website, 2. Stores answering machine, or Google maps. It sucks to walk over a mile on Christmas night for snacks and not be made aware of the closure until you've seen as led the steps to the back end ntrance. Ready to act like part of our TV CB community, thankslike to pop in for coffee while waiting for my bus. Its reasonable and they have seating upstairs if I have time to kill.
Maybe only two nice or helpful Employees! Besides the high prices and rude workers I was followed by the secret shopper on 4 separate occasions and I was over charged the guy that was supposed to refund me was rude I had to call the bank for my refund because the guy who said he did it never did! The stars are because they do happen to have some good finds in stock and yummy food yes over priced!
Ethan help me pick my first beer out here in Portland (got the number 5). Originally from the MileHigh CO & had to give a shout out to him and his amazing customer service. Came in later tonight and wasn’t too sure what to get. Noon swiped me off my feet with his passion for wine. He definitely isn’t afraid to show off his knowledge to a new girl in town. Thanks for the help gentlemen!!!
Watched a blind man struggle to enter the store today because they’ve had the primary entrance “temporarily closed” for 6 months. Accounting for crackheads and shoplifters should be built into your business plan. Reducing accessibility is not an option. IMO any time you block a primary entrance / exit you’re asking for a lawsuit. Also please fix the flooding in your parking lot.
The parking garage has had excessive water leaking for close to 2 years. It's gotten much worse and now looks like a lake in the parking garage and smells. I've gone here for years for the hot food bar and to go lunches. Probably won't go there anymore even though the location is so convenient. Should not be taking this long to repair the garage. Plus it's a newish building.
I love shopping here! The staff are super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. It is a bit pricey but they always have deals going on and they sell quality food so it’s worth paying a little extra. They have a lot of local Oregon products and organic food, as well as options for all dietary restrictions. But honestly it is the awesome staff that keep me coming back!
My review is specifically for the kitchen at the Market of Choice. I've been constantly impressed by the professionalism of the kitchen. I recently started a new job and needed small catering platters to fit into a very specific budget. Jenn and her crew have been incredible to work with and made my new job much less stressful. Thanks again!
I've been eating the hot food (example; chicken strips and JoJos. Tots etc.) For a couple of years. The prices have gone up considerably. I didn't complain. But now you are charging for dipping sauce? I'm pretty sure you just lost a customer for life. Spending nearly $8 for 2 chicken strips and $1.38 for dips. That's insane.
Andrew, the assistant manager and the staff at the meat department are THE BEST! If you have any questions or requests on anything they don’t have they can order for you. I buy all my meat in bulk now as my husband and I only eat meat and eggs. The best decision I’ve ever made too! Worth every penny spent too!
Security guards watched me as if they expected me to steal because I was dressed casually. Wish this was still a field with goats in it rather than an oppressive and highly biased place to shop. Will not be going back and hope this company doesn't get to stay in the community and treat people like this.
Least fav market of choice I’ve been to due to the flooded moldy smelling garage that’s been like that for way way too long. Not to mention it’s a hazard walking around with wet shoes, it’s just not pleasant. Store is clean and staff is friendly but I hate the layout and how small it is.
Love this quaint but well stocked location! It's always a good idea to come to Market of Choice for a quick lunch, snack, or special occasion good. They also have a really great stock of vegan products. Check out the bakery as well for yummy fresh treats.
The bakery here is BOMB!! Blew me and my girl out of the water with your cupcakes and pastries. So worth the expensive price! Our favorite cashier is LUCY. She is sweet and friendly every single time... Give that girl a raise! Or at least a free cupcake?
Only commenting/rating on their vegan breakfast sandwich selection....so many options, and very tasty. I especially love the sammies with the Thrilling Foods Bacon on them. Anytime I am in town, and I find myself in this neighborhood, it is a must-stop.
This store claims to be organic but it's not. The food they claim to prepare their has chemicals all through it. They dip their steaks and meat in chemicals and charge extremely high prices. Their crystal geyser purified water is full of heavy metals.
The security here needs to calm down before they get a lawsuit on their hands that they cant win. Saw them tackle a skinny 5'5' mexican guy. like 5 of them tackled him and his face got busted open .If that isn't a bit excessive idk what is.
This was, unbelievably, my first trip to Market of Choice and it was a little bit like a grocery store paradise. My friend was raving about it and couldn't believe I'd been in Portland for 15 years and hadn't been three. Who knew? Somehow
Wonderful customer service! I had a very pleasant conversation with a cashier by the name of Lauren, she was efficient and very friendly and definitely deserves some sort of recognition! I've been shopping here for quite awhile, and the
The kind of place that sells $5 8oz yogurts and $9/lb bell peppers, but can’t staff enough to keep all the entrances open or keep the meat or bakery counters staffed. The store is in a great location but falls flat on so many measures.
Very short visit,so will have to revisit. But I will say this don't expect the same things like the regular market of choice in other places that I've been going to for years it's a little different this place they don't put so much
“Please walk into a parking garage to take an elevator two floors to buy some super-high-markup stuff you can buy anywhere else if you weren’t desperate for a sandwich at 10th and Belmont”. Fuxk this place.
Pretty decent grocery store, though the prices are quite expensive (even for *high quality/local/organic*) foodstuffs. However, staff is friendly, store is clean & I am able to find what I need quickly.
Sophie, at the Market Barista, is always extremely polite and professional! Sophie is always punctual and anlways greets w/ a smile. And the coffee here is delicious and well priced. Kudos.
I love shopping at this friendly neighborhood store. As a local artist I sell my greeting cards and gift totes here and I appreciate how much they support so many local vendors.
Love this Market!! Great deli meals- we usually shop for the week and also order from hot deli- and dine in!! Great service, products and hours of operation.
This is where I get groceries for a long timet. I think that they are good. Not perfect. Prices are fair and it is store a local need to try.
First time in the store. Very impressed. Produce was stunning and had a great neighborhood feel to it. It's my new grocery store now.
Aisles and aisles, of feasts untold, Quality goods, and the tales they hold. A market where culinary stories are sold.
Nice clean quiet store. Lots of food carts within a few blocks. Bus 70 stop is right outside the door.
I love the coffee shop inside, & the bakery is amazing.
