Potash on State Street (cross street is Delaware Place) is a great local grocery store that has been in Chicago back from the old days. It's not a huge store like a Jewel or Whole Foods but it does have a variety of items. Since it's more of a neighborhood store, some items are more expensive than they would be elsewhere while some are much less expensive than other stores. They have a small yet comprehensive produce section as well as a few pre-boxed items, including sushi, to grab in a hurry. There are some International items, a medium sized frozen food section. FRESH BAKED GOODS - Croissants, bagels, etc. are in a case and there are some specialty breads as well. DELI - At the back of the store, there is a fantastic deli. They have branded as well as their own deli meats and the wait is never too long. The Potash made deli roast beef is AMAZING! Probably the best I've ever had! SANDWICHES - Also made at the deli, grab a little clip board that they have on the counter, check what you want and turn it in. A list of their regular /non-customized sandwiches are also on the wall and can also be modified. They have an assortment of breads, meats, cheeses and delicious pickles. HOT BAR - Basics such as fries and fried chicken pieces are always available. The price is good for combos of main plus a side or two. There is also a portion of the hot bar that changes and includes some pasta salads, pre-seasoned chicken breasts, my favorite meatballs ever, mac & cheese and some other items that change depending on what they have made for the day. They also always have rotisserie chickens and sides. SALAD BAR - It's small but ok in a crunch or to go with something else from the store for a quick dinner.
One of the last of the privately owned grocery stores in Chicago. They have a good selection of fresh vegetables meats and fish and they have some specialty items like locks and bagels and they will make a sandwich for you. The usual canned goods and frozen foods. The aisles are a little narrow and the place looks like it could use some modernization. They also have a large selection of liquors and beer. They have pick up and delivery. On some things their prices can be high but I chalk that up to being a private independently owned grocery store as a posed to a jewel. There is a parking lot around the corner that I have never used but I believe they either give you one or two hours of free parking or a big discount cuz parking in the neighborhood is very expensive. Street parking is almost non-existent. The employees are all very nice and helpful and they know where things are in the store when you ask them how do I find blah blah blah. Recommended.
I root for this smaller store! But, unless they make changes I do not think their time is long on State Street. I have been a loyal patron for over a decade and live around the corner. There is a deliberate campaign by the store to support local and not support Amazon owned Whole Foods (which opened mere blocks away). The resulting downturn in business has been compensated for by raising prices across the board. Not just raising, but gouging customers. I did a little experiment and checked 10 items between both stores and Potash is charging between 30-80% higher for items. You have a loyal base that visits daily from the neighborhood, you are just taking advantage of your customers with these prices. It will not last, people are starting to notice and change to other options. I hope the store will revert this trend and, once again, become competitive.
I'm actually shocked that others gave this place somewhat positive reviews considering their pathetic excuse of customer service they fail to consistently deliver. I live on the same block so to say this place in convenient is an understatement. However, I would rather walk a few blocks down to Whole Foods or Treasure Island just to avoid dealing with these grossly inept people that work at Potash. They seem miserable to actually be there and act put out if you ask them a simple question. The one named Seville is the absolute worst and it's speaks to the kind of management they have considering they would allow someone like her to still work there. It's almost comical how ridiculously rude they are and considering the produce is consistently going bad shortly after it's bought, I think I'm going to have to finally give up on this joke of a store.
This place allowed a thief to conduct a $600 transaction on my stolen credit card, obviously without VERIFYING ID. Basics of Retail Cashiers... Always verify ID on credit card purchases, especially over a certain amount and especially when several other cards have been attempted and declined. Even worse, when I attempted to contact the store to discuss, I was spoken to incredibly rudely by an employee and promised a call back this evening by the manager. (The call back was only promised after I demanded it. She originally told me to call back, after I had already explained the situation. One would assume that if your company made a huge mistake- why should the individual be inconvenienced anymore?) Long story short- do not do business with them. Obviously they do not work with pride or integrity.
Elitist expensive Gold Coast grocery store with sub-par deli selection and fresh food. Every thing I purchased that was “fresh” from the deli including $15 of large jumbo shrimp were tasteless and seemingly past fresh. The salmon I got wilted on the way home and basically melted in the bag with a huge fishy smell because it was mushy rather than firm so the plastic wrap didn’t keep well and juiced out. The pastries I got were also well passed their expiration and tasteless/rotting. I also felt highly judged by the 1% personas that shop here from the surrounding high rises which I never ever experienced around River North. I would say this place caters to the elderly given their old money vibes and bland expensive food.
Don’t shop here under any circumstance. Under the guise of being a small family owned business, they gouge their prices and are horrible to work for. I assume this from the perpetually sour attitude of the majority of their employees. Since 2022, each product I buy at this store has increased in price between 30% and 60%. I understand inflation- this is taking advantage of people who have remained loyal to them. Keep in mind their prices were bananas before the inflation crisis. Walk the extra few blocks to Whole Foods where it’s cheaper and higher quality. Walk another two blocks to Trader Joe’s, where on average the produce is 1/3 to 1/2 the price. Shame on them. Today was my last visit.
Still as reliable as most Potash markets are. Most of what you need is available. They had, what I thought was a good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. One of the good and most complete supplies of grocery needs. Meats are always fresh; stocks are always new due to fast moving accountability. Always clean and tidy. People are friendly and helpful. They work diligently to serve customers quick and this is helpful to avoid having to queue for long periods. The cashier I encountered is kind and accommodating. My experience at Potash market is always good. Definitely a good place for grocery shopping.
Potash gives you a really "homely" feel to your grocery shopping experience. It's different from other bigger grocery chains because it's smaller and decorated in way that provides shoppers a really intimate atmosphere. I really enjoy coming here because things are easier to find and they have a great selection of really fresh produce. It may be a little more expensive but if you're all for supporting small, local businesses, this is a great one to get behind. It's been here since 1962 and hopefully it'll go on for many more years!
I love this grocery store. This has a very quaint small town feel in the middle of downtown. The store is not the biggest, so they suffer with some "space" issues, be sure to look up - you may find some items hanging above the freezer cases. A delicious salad bar, excellent desserts and a well stocked liquor section are other reasons to visit this place! Only problem is that their prices are a little overboard - they seem to cater to a rich downtown clientele.
I want to shop local, even though it’s significantly more expensive to shop here, but Potash makes it nearly impossible. I have had to make a trip to Whole Foods afterwards almost every time to go get the things Potash is out of. I’ve not had a single trip in the past two months where I haven’t had to go to Whole Foods afterwards due to being out of stock of the most basic ingredients. I think I’m at the point where I can’t give Potash anymore chances.
They are still around cause their intentions are from the heart & sound!! Still offering good service, good supermarket supplies, current with these ever changing times! So you know they must be doing somethings right, their long fight has been the good fight! Their Deli is still my delight! I wasn't sure if they were still around, and even was served by a most hospitable new employee from my far Southside of Town! SHALOM!
I'm really baffled about the negative comments because I've been shopping at Potash for over 30 years! Art and his staff have always treated me with the utmost respect and have often gone "beyond the call of duty." Perhaps its because I believe strongly in and practice the words of the Great Teacher; "...For with the measure that you are measuring out, they will meaure out to you in return." (Luke 6:38)
Just ordered birthday cake for two of our friends. One party - 2 birthdays. I asked for the cake to say happy birthdayS, of course it said- happy birthday, not birthdays. I specified that so many times , in writing - I was surprised they didn’t get it right. The cake was chocolate mousse cake and it was super delicious. The price was perfect too, fraction of Whole Foods.
Ok when your out walking, you might not expect to find a grocery so convenient. We whent in hoping to quell our grumbelieys. Yes they had lots of great choices. Ar check out the manager even comped us a very ripe banana. We eat our selections as we walk the streets of Chicago....why don't you stop in, tell them Joe sent you...they will say Joe Who...that's me
For many years, this store was dirty and run-down, which surprised me because it's in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Chicago. They finally cleaned it up a bit and updated it, though it isn't very economical. Various pluses include the location and authentic bagels. It has the atmosphere of a neighborhood store and is there when you need it.
This place is a hell hole, has been for years. Dates be expired on certain items. Customer service don't know details on items. Cashier are always loud, the asian guy who sit up stairs never finds a solution to a problem. The dairy guy is never there unless he has a full time shift of 5am-11am which is definitely low hours.
Really Potash gets 3.5 stars. Convenient if you live nearby. Selection is decent and they're open late enough for impulse needs. Prices are a little higher as can be expected in the Gold Coast. They bring in a lot of baked goods from bakeries all over the place. This is a nice perk if you have a favorite loaf or pastry.
Between my parents shopping at Potash for 35 years and now me and my own family for the past 25+ years—it’s my favorite grocery store, they have everything you need, great customer service, good prices, great meat and produce, so convenient, and they offer that beautiful small town grocery atmosphere. We love Potash! ❤️
This store is a common place for customers to buy groceries. You can put orders for groceries conveniently and shop instantly. You will get a lot of options, from fresh foods to instant items. The place is clean and so big that if you decide to bring your car, you can park your car. Just fine!
The staff belittles their customers when you ask for help. The staff began to talk negatively about a customer right after they walked away. Unfortunately, the customer was still in the vicinity and could hear their negative comments. I would've expected better customer service.
Choice for meat and priced well. Wine and beer is competitively priced and well stocked. Most of the grocery items are at a premium price as you are paying for the convenience of shopping in the Gold Coast. I’ve been shopping here for years and only for limited selections.
This is my go to grocery store near where I live. The selection is great, the service is superb and the quality of produce is right where it needs to be. I would recommend this grocery store for anybody wants him anything from fresh meats to fresh avocado. Great space.
Must stop in when on State Street...sandwiches made to order (kind slow on that, but dang good fresh custom ),sushi bar redone recently, yum, yum ,yum!!! Expensive, but you pay for quality,rarity...check out extensive wine and beer selection!!! WORTH A LOOK SEE!!!!
It has all the basics and some pretty good wine selection (several grapes & countries), fresh produce, and deli. Good location in downtown and stays open late, which was pretty useful as a tourist. Pricing was bit high but at least products were of good quality.
POTASH MARKET. is the BEST LOCAL GROCERY in CHICAGO'S NEAR-NORTH/LINCOLN-PARK Neighborhood. ... *POTASH Has EVERYTHING* !!! FRESH:Meats,Cheeses,Fruits&Vegies. Great Deli,*WINE Cellar* & Cheeses! Even Postage Stamps-! COURTEOUS! & CustomerFriendly! -Dr.Edwards-.
Potash Market has some cool things to buy including their own branded food which were all good. The cashiers, however, were rather rude and did not provide good customer service, acting as if they did not want to be there. That is poor service right there.
Want to pay an over-inflated price for average groceries, come to Potash Brothers. It's basically the "convenience store" of grocery stores. The alcohol, especially is over-priced. As well as random goods that are like 50% more than you'd pay at Dominicks.
With a range of grocery stores to choose from, i love to pop in here when I'm in need of an ingredient quick! It's conveniently located to my apartment and it's always nice to support the local businesses. The staff has always been friendly and helpful.
Briliant place for shopping and maily for cheap lunch or dinners! There is big fresh bar with fresh vegetables, deli, bakery and some tables for eating inside. You can get really great and fresh food based on your actuall mood for perfect price.
A small, basic grocery store with premium prices. It's convenient if you live in the area. You can find most of what you need here, but if there's any other personal items you're looking for, head north up to the Walgreen's up the street.
Too pricey and I saw one of the oldest worker, like Asian I think, giving orders, to another co-worker, of course a teenager, in a unrrespetfully and abusive language, which I don't think is legal, because the young man is a minor, while
Great store! Awesome selection. We enjoy the clean atmosphere and friendly service. They have a nice selection of wines and organics too! The Potash Family has done an amazing job for years! Give them a try! You won't be disappointed!!!
This is an OK place, I go there frequently to pick up some odds and ends because of the convenient location, but a)overpriced; b)choices are limited. Wouldn't give it a bad score, but wouldn't recommend it as a great place either.
I would love to support local but have given up on Potash. Not only are prices ridiculously high but I can’t get over the fact they systematically allow and seemingly encourage beggars to camp out in front of the entrance.
I simply love this little family neighborhood grocery store. It’s truly a gem. Great staff. Delish hot food & salad bar. Great selection of fruits and veggies. They also prepare fresh sushi daily. Don’t pass it up. …
This market has wide selection of ethnic foods that are great for us. We travel and are caregivers therefore the locations are well suited. We are pleased at various salads, soups and other fresh or hot prepared foods.
I like the cheese counter, friendly cheese monger and very knowledgeable. The deli provides interesting on the go snacks, and it is the only place I can find pimento spread and Tony's Cajun Seasoning in this town.
Very pricy grocery. And the produce always ring up at more pounds than it feels. I'm hesitant to shop per pound produce here because I always feel gypped & can never find a scale on the produce area to prove it.
Great work experience, great welcoming team members, and managers that are realistically understanding! Large variety of wines, gourmet spices, meats, organics, and dairy! I love it! ✌✌✌ …
Love Potash on State St. For a small store, they have incredibly large and diverse selections of food and alcoholic beverages. A little more expensive than larger super markets but very convenient.
Staff is rude , art is a loser for a owner. Deli is always rude & loud. Basically these guys get paid to not really do anything special. Might as well close this company put a WFM in there place.
Expensive and few options. Their produce looks sad. Advice is to go to either Jewel Osco half a mile north or south of this location. The southern Jewel also has a Trader Joe's right next to it.
Their bakery foods are not so fresh, I can murder someone by their heavy bagels. Their snack section is more like: not hungry today or any day, wine section is good, veggies are not super fresh.
Potash has the best meat. The best fish. The very best chicken. And bagels/great pies if you get there early. I shop selectively there - other things are much higher priced than regular markets.
Nice market downtown with a great selection. Stayed in a hotel a few blocks away and we were able to get a delicious baguette, cheese, olives and salami to have with some wine our first night.
We had not been in before and we really enjoyed the market. It was well stocked and the staff was friendly. We ordered sandwiches from the deli which were huge and super tasty. We'll be back!
River North prices and slightly understaffed in the deli area between 11-1 when people are getting sandwiches for lunch. Other than that, solid selection of boar's head meat and groceries.
First time ever in a Potash Market. Easy to navigate and find everything I needed. The store has decent size and selection for deli, meat produce. The workers are so friendly and helpful.
If you live in the loop and dont go here, you need to start. Jakub has helped me many times discover new wines and spirits I would have never tried. If I could give 10 stars I would
Overpriced compared to the quality you're getting. With a whole foods and trader joe's a 5 minute walk away, the only thing this store offers is convenience if you live close by.
Nicely kept shop with fair prices and a carefully maintained assortment of food articles. The Amazon Locker complements the one-stop shopping experience off the magnificent mile.
Good selection of food and the produce appears to be fresh. They have a pretty wide selection of alcohol. I would go back to this place. It would be nice if they were open 24/7.
I always like to visit Potash Markets because they have a variety of items that are not usually found in other stores. The items were fresh and tasted good. Will visit again.
Super little Market. Great section of wines and very helpful staff. Great gourmet and regular food as well. It can et crowded right after work, but what do you expect.
Excellent selection, fresh produce, flowers, plants, international food. One stop shop downtown Chicago. Traffic is bad down here so you're better off walking here.
Their hot fresh pizza, roasted chicken and potatoes are good. The prices are a little high but to be a neighborhood store, it pretty much has everything you need!
Felt like a deli/grocery in NY. Carries Boars Head and has a great selection of carryout foods. Full groceries and I even purchased a gift! 100 percent recommend!
Huge variety of quality products for an Urban market. Salad bar seems recently priced for large selection, including warm foods. Prices are premium, as expected.
The prices are overpriced but, the sushi is amazing and they have fresh produce. The customer service is very bad but it is a store if i need something quickly.
Great selections and produce, beautifully displayed and good prices. Breads, cakes, fruits, wine the lot. Quite big for central Chicago. Worth stopping
The deli is very good. Nice selection of hot dishes in the deli for lunch. Salad and soup bar is always clean and well stocked. My new go to for lunch.
I go.for the prepared foods and they are always hot and fresh. Also tastes very good. I go almost every day for my lunch break. Good variety every day.
they have a lot of groceries that i want. they have good bananas. ovaltine is good too. lots of wine that we like as well. milk is expired but tasty.
Nice to go to a locally owned market. Fresh produce, nice wine and cheese selection and all the basic groceries you could need. Reasonably priced!
Convenient neighborhood market. Great wine and beer selection, produce and meat. Excellent for stocking up if you are only in town for a few days!
This is a great store to shop at in the neighborhood. It has pretty much everything you need. Friendly staff and quick check out even when busy.
They have hard to find items and the hot bar is delicious. The staff is helpful and friendly, it truly is a gourmet, modern day Mom & Pop!!!
Good selection of food items. Freshly baked bread is good to here. Well stocked produce section. Friendly staff. Great medium sized market.
Great selection of produce and Cheese. Abit expensive for regular shopping but definitely worth supporting smaller businesses when possible
We bought peaches and a couple doughnuts, the doughnuts were OK, but the peaches vere far away for what we paid for those two peaches....
So much selection here. I found some great items that helped me through my 4 day trip, esp some that were on the healthier side of food.
Great little store with everything I need. Prices are a little high but not outrageous. Great wine selection for the size of the store.
Great customer service. The worker's name was Jeff and he was amazing. This is a well stocked neighborhood grocery store that I love.
This place is legit. Awesome selection of both veg and meat at some really, really good prices. It's definitely worth the drive out
Lots of great beer and wine options. This place is great for quick items needed when living downtown but you pay for the premium.
Great little market packed to the brim. A little expensive but not more than you'd expect. Good selection of beers and wines too
Better than Trader Joe's AND Whole Foods. Just an amazing selection and really quite unique products. Wish we had this in LA!
Friendly staff, good range of quality products but expensive if you're just going in to shop for everyday essentials.
Cool locally owned market with just about anything you’d ever need. Friendly staff and a great wine/beer selection.
Very nice market, great selection on goods. Salmon bits were delicious! The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable
Great produce. Good variety. Priced according to the wonderful location in downtown Chicago - Magnificent Mile. ;)
Store very clean and nicely organized. Staff was kind of friendly, but could work on that a bit. Prices too high.
Big selection choices in a small local grocery footprint. Great quality but you will experience "sticker shock".
So pleasant and convenient. Great deli sandwiches and hot bar. This is definitely my go to in the neighborhood!
Thank you to all the staff at Potash! Our Thanksgiving dinner the past 4 years has been the best. Delicious!
Produce prices are illogical compared to other local grocery stores, but the rotisserie chicken is awesome.
Great local grocery. Small place but always good service, very clean. I like using Apple Pay for groceries
Very nice, very clean, decent selection & prices. Nice to have a full grocery store in the Gold Coast!
This is a nice little Independent grocer in a very swanky neighborhood. I enjoy the hot bar for lunch.
Love the service here . Awesome choices in terms of food / groceries. Great location. my go to spot
Good product selection. Cheaper than Whole Foods but still pricey vs. supermarkets. Nice staff.
The best local experience for shopping! Variety of products is stellar and service superior
Very friendly staff, good selection. Tasty fresh food at the deli counter.
"Friendly staff, a lot of variety of veggies, and fruits, good prices...."
This is my favorite grocery store when I'm living in Streeterville.
Great urban upscale market. Meat is really good, fish ok.
Great one stop shop. The prices are a little high
Sometimes you can find nice things on sale here!
