Seattle Pacific University seems to have changed little since I last attended graduation three years ago at. At that time, SPU chose a black woman from out of state to lecture the graduates on becoming more inclusive and to share their white privilege in the form of money, especially for people of color. She went on to remind them that God loves them all because “she” is a god of love no matter what color you are. This year, SPU again chose a black woman to be the commencement speaker. She was also from out of state, but is on their board of trustees. She has a long list of organizations she has been on primarily with getting money to minorities so they can go to school and succeed. Instead of lecturing the graduates this time, she opened with a quote of a prayer that referenced Ruth in the Bible. She revealed that the author was agnostic, but it exemplified her feelings so well she wanted to share it verbatim. The speaker promised to return to the Ruth reference later. She never did. But she did quote a verse from Colossians to close her 16 minute talk. I am confident a few folks observed the content was strung together from numerous sources connected only by her copy/paste technique. I hope she wasn’t paid for her pre-collegiate attempt at speaking. Naturally, everyone clapped and the dissemination of the diplomas commenced accompanied by loud horns, screaming of names, and whooping as different names were announced. Many graduates walked with such a brazen proud gait, you’d think they were a mere 8 year old precocious child showing off their new shoes. Most acted dignified though at near fifteen a stretch before another “star was born.” I find it odd that in today’s culture where “appropriate” crowd and collegiate behavior is often observed forgotten or unknown that neither the students were “educated” on how the solemnness and significance can be vanquished in one attention-getting act. Additionally, no leader even informed those attending at the onset any expectations of their behavior. It is as if those in charge have become fearful of telling anyone what is acceptable behavior or not. This was further shown as numerous outwardly gay and crossdressing and possibly transgender graduates pranced across the stage. One boy, in heels, black lipstick, and rainbow flag was cheered by his peers and warmly congratulated by staff that should have known better than let it get so far that his success in the world will likely be severely hampered by his delusion, not to mention his spiritual growth or presence apparently ignored by the traditionally Bible believing school. At a party afterwards, I got to speak with a graduate who expressed her carefulness at school to use the right pronouns with her friends who would be male or female or neither from day to day. Her professor in her Sociology of Gender class at SPU stated he hated those parties where they announced the sex of the baby. He felt it was shortsighted for the parents and the child who hadn’t had a chance to figure out what it wanted to be. I admit I have become more judgmental and am still appalled at my own lack of research into SPU when I sent my daughter to this “Christian” school. I am not tolerant of everything. It doesn’t mean I hate people. But I hate it when people profess toleration if I agree with them, but spew hateful comments at me if I do not. Worshiping at the idol of tolerance and its consequences should be exposed in a collegiate setting, not celebrated.

I have had a really bad experience here. Most students are the spoiled, sheltered, preppy type. Majority that I have encountered are very cliquey, immature, fake, and just plain unfriendly. I find it quite ironic, because the school often claims that they have such a great community. The facilities aren't anything special; seem low budget and just provide the bare minimum. The sports and clubs here are nothing compared to most universities. I don't ever eat on campus but only hear bad things about the food. Some professors are good, some are bad, just like any other university. However, course offerings are very limited, so you can't really pick and choose who to take. I just don't see any justification on how this place can be worth the 40k/yr tuition. I wish I had done more research prior to attending or transferred when I had the chance. I think there are many better options out there.

From the perspective of a Christian, this is an amazing University. For the most part, the professors are some of the best and brightest, and one can definitely expect a world class education here, however there are some downfalls. The university requires 3 classes on the Christian faith, but in reality the majority of their "common curriculum" is incredibly Christianity centered, which could be an uncomfortable problem for non Christians. The second downfall is the price. It's a private university, tuition is crazy expensive, and room and board will land you a good 4 grand a quarter if you factor in having to pay for laundry and having to pay for orca cards. Not much is given away for free here, so make sure to have a steady job before coming. Despite the negatives, the education quality is great, but if you choose to attend, be prepared for debt.

These folks take themselves very seriously, such is the trend for liberal arts universities that are more consumed with their messaging and optics, than their products and services -- namely, how well they prepare students for high skill jobs. Place is rife with caravans and drifters. The program staff for nursing and nutrition programs are rude, unresponsive, unhelpful. Seems to be a discount private school, based on appearance, quality of website, and administrative automation. Attempting cash grab with certificates posted, which do not prepare for anything other than their graduate programs which have obscure accreditations with little weight outside the region. Advertise Christian and Judaic values, but have sold their soul for Pagan and Baal altars disguised as Social Justice, Affirmatives, and Genderism.

I’m guessing a lot has changed from previous years, not for the better. Despite portraying Christian values, SPU seems very dishonest, desperate for money and has lost site of their focus. They do a great job at painting a beautiful picture when you visit but after your son or daughter has enrolled everything changes. We’ve even noticed that the homeless population disappears during scheduled campus tours. There is not the support you would expect from a small university. The admin and faculty seem at war with their own politics and can’t figure out what they stand for. Instead of just asking for more money, they find fees, fines and rely on antiquated policies to steal any dime they can. Sadly, I think this may be the end of what was once an incredible private university.

Just go to UW or out of state, you will have a better experience and definitely get better academic support and will pay the same in tuition and also they have issues with security. The phone lines were down for weeks for the security office line and an incident occurred which resulted in the severe injury of a student. WSU has a beautiful campus better professors and Luis campus even has an online program. If you can’t do in person in Pullman and has a tuition that is lower on top of that, also, Spu has cut their housing and their staff and so they are unable to house so many students this fall.

All I can say is I am so glad this is my daughter's last year. Her experience at this school has mad her hate college. She is even talking about not finishing her masters degrees. She now got placed in an apartment that is falling apart, the door doesn't stay shut unless you deadbolt it. The place smells of animal urine, including the furniture. Someone was supposed to show up today by 4pm but of course they didn't. My question is what the hell are we paying for. So sad that a beautiful campus treats the students this way.

As an Alumni who attended 2012 to 2016 I can confirm that what was once an incredibly welcoming and lush campus with a wonderful president, wonderful staff and supported range of LGBTQ+ students is all but lost. Deeply disappointed in the archaic, bigoted board members and a rotating, disconnected presidency. If you have any semblance of what real love means I do not recommend you attend SPU at this time. I hope that SPU finds it’s way back to engaging rather than enraging the culture.

Pursuing a Masters in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. I really appreciated the orientation process. The faculty are professional, passionate, and involved. So far I've learned quite a bit. The program is intensive and intimate. I feel by the time I graduate I will be prepared to apply the learned material effectively and competently.

Went to college here and absolutely loved it! Great professors who care about the students and always willing to help. I met great friends here. They do a good job at being open minded and encouraging Christian faith without cramming it down anyone’s throat. I am a passionate Christian and I appreciated this!

  • Ryan Grove

Great financial aid (still not cheap though), academics with integrity, and a faithful Christian witness. What more can you ask of a Christian, liberal arts university? Not to mention the passionate, caring professors, and the stunning campus set in the middle of Queen Anne. I miss SPU.

Seems like a nice place and looking at the academic offer, I would recommend this place. Unfortunately I have talked to alumni informing me about the anti-lbtqi policies in place with actual proof. So sad! Would not recommend :(

Seattle Pacific University has a rustic and very beautiful brick campus that is an area in Queen Anne that takes you back to an older time. Would highly recommend walking the campus for an enlightening and relaxing experience.

  • Daren Goulding

One of the most beautiful and serene campuses in Seattle. Great lawns separate the buildings from one another. Classical architecture with a mix of modern creat this hillside college on Queen Anne. Great school

  • Cole FauntLeRoy

Your policies encourage harmful and dangerous treatment of all lgbt people in Seattle. I am ashamed to live so close a place where I know I am not welcome and not allowed to be treated as an equal.

Nice School. But it's time to end the soft target, gun free zones on our campuses. Schools used to offer Marksmanship as an elective. They were safer then!

  • John Wilson

Joe Mullin...the tuition is not $40,000...also...why did you stay and why did you conitnue there. Your response is 100% negative and lacks clarity.

  • Patrick Tomaschke

Truly exceptional education, but not 5 stars as they are contributing to the student debt crisis like every other university.

I only sat in a class here. I really enjoy the environment and will consider them for grad school.
