So my son who is bi racial went this bar tonight with a group of friends, he stepped outside to make a phone call, when he tried to re enter he was informed by the bouncer that the bar was full to capacity . While my son waited outside his friends and girlfriend came out to check on him, all of whom happen to be white and where allowed to renter the bar all except my son. While my son stood and waited 5 pple left and 5 pple where allowed to enter all who where white. My son's friends packed up and left the bar. To think that this is allowed to continue in this day and age is ridiculous. I would seriously give second thoughts to going to this bar in the future. I would also hope that disciplinary action is taken against this bouncer. In response to bar owners response....there was no line an several to witness that fact.
My boyfriend is biracial, and one of the sweetest people I know. We went to Star Bar in Portland for a friend’s bday, and he stepped outside for a moment at around 9:30. The bouncer wouldn’t let him back in and him they were at capacity. Two people left. The bouncer wouldn’t let him in. I came out and talked to him, and two more people left. He said the bar was over capacity, but let me back in and not my boyfriend. I went and told our friends we were leaving, and while I was inside, he let four white people in while my boyfriend was standing in front of the door waiting. He said they’d just gone outside for a moment. He wouldn’t let the one brown person in the group in. There was no line.
Not sure if this place needs a review. Constantly packed with the highest pedigree of Portland’s finest dirt bags. I feel humbled and honored every time I walk in there and am treated with unfettered kindness. Never a dull moment and genuine taste of real, classic, and sadly, quickly disappearing Portland. The DJ’s play music that is at once nostalgic and new. They have a knack for finding the rare versions of familiar tunes and limited edition, international import, b-sides. They get to capacity often and luckily there are plenty of other acceptable bars near by, but none can compare to Star Bar. If you can’t have fun here, you probably don’t know what fun is.
It's a place that panders more to posh transplants seeking a slice of punk in a seemingly post-punk Portlandia (attribute it to gentrification and a shifting culture or environment). It was a very comfortable bar with great mood lighting but the overall vibe / aesthetics are far from Punk in my opinion. Well, other than the musical ambience. You should definitely stop by and check out the amazing cocktail menu though. In all honesty, I'm probably a little biased since I've always associated punk with dive bars. A place for misfits and the counter cultural social outcasts of the 20th century - of which this establishment didn't seem to embody.
When my grandma asked me what I wanted for Flag Day in 1994, I told her I wanted the video game “Star Fox”. Instead she got me “Starve Ox” which, to this day, is still the worst video game I’ve ever played. Yes, worse than "Doctor Wizard". Basically you turn it on and there’s this big animal, and it’s all like “Press A to feed the ox”. Every time you press A it’s says “GAME OVER. You failed to starve the ox. Try Again? Yes/No” Once I selected “no” and then the police came and took the game away. What was I talking about? Oh, star bar-- yeah they got good burgers and nice people, what do you want from me, leave me alone.
THE ABSOLUTE BEST STAFF OF ANY BAR IN PDX! Thank you, to the incredible heroes behind the bar! ~ I cannot vouch for this incredible local landmark enough. Star bar is as good as it gets, in so many catagories, and whether you're enjoying your fairly-priced beverage sitting inside in their divey, decorated, velvet painting-lined inside, or at a table outside, you can feel the thrumm of the heart of our calming city through the bones of this beautiful business.
I like the specials and the bartenders are really nice. The only problem I have is that that if your going to let so many people smoke outside the rule about sitting while drinking is annoying. I'd rather they say no drinks outside while smoking then more people would be inside and allow for more space to sit while you smoke. Other wise most patrons are outside and there are not enough benches.
I love this place. The owner is very accomodating. I tried ordering a drink that they didn't have the ingredients for, and the next time I came back not only did they now have the ingredients, they remembered that I had asked about them and let me know. Also, surprisingly good food and a laid back atmosphere make this place a winner. Check it out.
Bartender was sweet as candy. Ipas were decently chill, fries were a lil dark and batter on corn dog looked a lil sad but the hot dogs themselves are great I usually get a stomach ache from eating dogs but these dogs are good af. Probably one of the best doggy dogs I've tasted in this doggy world. I wish my friends would bus their tables though
Hi I'm the person referenced in Denise and Hope's posts, there was not a line when I was not allowed in and I did in fact wait to be let in but white people were let in ahead of me, I watched people leave and I still wasn't let in, my white friends were let in immediately while I was told to wait outside by the bouncer. This was discrimination.
The sign on the outside screams coolest little gay bar in Dallas. Look's like the type of joint that's worth popping in but you wont be able to help that disappointed sigh when you step in to see the unofficial okcupid singles mixer happening inside. The DJ was just a little too cool and the people seemed way too drunk for 10pm.
The bartender was rude and overall this place had a very creepy atmosphere to it. From the awful music to the bizarre paintings on the walls. Wouldn’t not recommend going here, literally plenty of better options on the same block.

Walked in for my first time, only had one drink prior to coming in and the bartender refused to serve me. He said that I was too intoxicated for him to serve me. Talk about bad judgement. Tell your bartender to learn how to read people! Went to the bar next door and that bar served me and earned my business
Burger week 2023 review - Divine Intervention: Terrible. I'm giving 1 extra star for trying something outside the box, but someone should've taste tested it first. Couldn't taste the Nutella at all and the burger itself just tasted strange. I love strange food combos, but this was not it.

I guess it's called "Star" bar because you have to be part of some exclusive club to get in there. I've tried for four years to get in there and each time the bartenders found some reason to not serve us, not once because we were belligerent. Should be called "Far" bar cause I'm going anywhere else but.
A great little Georgetown Tavern with Friendly Bar staff and solid drinks. There is also a trailer park flea market behind the spot so you know that you'll find something for everyone there. The food is good and the drinks are from local breweries and distilleries. One of the best spots in Georgetown!
Real great place to eat and have a drink! The bar tender on Tuesday deserves a raise, she's always friendly and provides the best customer service. If not I'm willing to donate myself to make sure she does!!!

Ultimate dive bar. Heavy pours, bartenders are awesome. Doesn’t smell like piss, and it’s either no crowd (awesome) or the weirdest crowd (awesome, smelly, lots of black clothing and leather). They also have a gallery of velvet paintings that look spectacular on molly. Hehe. So fantastic foo
I was confronted by a grup of thugs while sitting outside. They were al wearing black leather vests. Leader seemed to be a bold skinny guy with thick square black glasses. Place is nice, service is good but it is home to thugs and bands of criminals. Go somewhere else, not worth the risk.
What can I say except I love the Star Bar. For years I've been going here having so much fun. I've seen so many talented people play here. The staff is on top of their game and it's evident on crowded nights. I would recommend this to any locals or anyone from out of town.
Two words: Sliders. Also vegan jelloshots! Fun place with a massive wall of black velvet paintings! I haven't checked out the late night scene yet, but it's a great place to grab a drink after work and snack on some foods. I'm hoping for big things to come from this place!
This bar is nice and simple and located in a section of local bars and eateries. It may seem line a drive bar, but the interior is pretty clean and the service is friendly. We had some drinks and snacks here. The totchos are tasty and you can't go wrong with jello shots.
Definitely a diamond in the rough with a mighty fine selection of liquors to satisfy any palate and not to mention how fabulous their food is to boot. Super friendly staff and willing to go that extra step to make you feel comfortable and relaxed.
Use to come here all the time pre-covid. Happened by just today and glad I did. Vegan smash burger literally smashes! So happy to see them still thriving!! Will certainly be back again soon.

This is a cool bar. I love dive bars so this is pretty ideal. It's very small and dark, and has an awesome photo booth! I went here the Saturday before Halloween, so to be expected, it was kind of crowded, but had a good time either way!
A super chill super clean spot. Always a vibe, food always smacks. Good drinks and friendly staff!

Grimey, dive-y, dark, loud, cheap. All the best things in a punk rock bar. But it's not the diviest, so I can't give it five stars. Also don't eat the vegan wings, they are hella gross, and texture initiates the gag factor.
Whenever I visit Portland I make sure to block off some time at Star Bar, though usually I find myself there anyway. It’s always full of character and good times. Go here if you want to get weird.
Pretty run of the mill SE Portland bar with a somewhat hipster scene. Good central location. Reasonably clean. The bar was understaffed the night we stopped in resulting in long waits for drinks.
Fun little bar with lots of velvet paintings, punk music, grimy floors, photo booth, and cheap jello shots. They have some outside seating on the sidewalk and you can bring your drinks out.
Was crowded and popping with conversation, but despite i probably looked like a wreck due to being ditched on my date, the staff was very nice. I'd love to go again on my own time.
Bar frequented by punks, metal heads, and rock n rollers. Of course everyone is welcome and everyone visits. Awesome staff and great ownership. Great DJ's that spin vinyl nightly.
Cozy environment, great happy hour deals and specials, friendly staff, and comfortable outdoor seating. And the bathrooms are lit only by red lights, which is quite the vibe.
Fun atmosphere and great mixed drinks. Bar food here is tasty. There are also photo booths, pinball, and space for small groups to gather. Music is alternative and rock.
Love the atmosphere and the charismatic bartenders! The DJ spinning punk vinal was awesome as well! Also, good cheap beer selection for those who like it (like me).
Excellent bartenders! Awesome punk rock ambience. Well curated retro paintings really tie the room together! Great music if you like punk/metal/rock!
My new favourite bar. Great music, the atmosphere is fun, seating is very comfortable. Wish they had more pinball. Drinks are stiff, and well priced.
Went after 12 and place gave a wierd vibe, probably wouldn't go back in such bright colored clothes to not get so much side eye from everyone …
I asked for an old fashioned and what i got was far from it.

Great atmosphere, usually a fun movie on the telly and good music on the juke. I've had the whole menu and it is all good. No bad choices here.
Love the bar but food program is unacceptable. Went from good salad and sandwiches to decent hot dogs to what looks like Costco appetizers
Friendly bartenders, great food, stiff drinks and amazing velvet paintings. Unpretentious, with a definite punk/grunge vibe in the crowd.
A punk bar with a 50/50 chance of getting mad at a drunk punk dude in his late 30s who hates Californians but is probably from Santa cruz
Loud typical portland bar. Its fantastic. Food is great and reasonably priced. Drinks are good and vibe is very underground 90ish rock.
They have a huge collection of velvet art. It is a fun space. The bar food hit the spot after more than a few drinks that evening. ;)
Went for a show, and the sound situation is very strange. Cash only bar with no ATMs are also no good. They have a very nice patio.
Busting Cuban sandwich and very good drinks!!

Great people watching, stiff drinks served by gorgeous punks and a fine selection of clowns and cowhands painted on black velvet.
Always good music and great service. Simple menu, but never disappoints for happy hour. I should really go there more often.
Bartenders were awesome. First bar I went to in Portland and had a fun time. Jammed with some punk band from Seattle.
Love star bar! Heavenli is the sweetest and best bartender ever. It’s a comfy cool dive bar. Go to the photo booth!
Small, dim-lit, dive bar with art on the wall and a fun photo booth. Cool staff. Decent happy hour. Street parking.
A good classic dive bar. The decor has a lot of tasteful classic topless girls, there is pinball a s a photo booth
Great place to see a weird crowd on any night. Make sure to get here before it's taken over by corporate Portland.
Tacky-chic. Great local bar featuring music themed house cocktails and a wall to wall gallery of velvet paintings.
Divey Rock and Roll bar with velvet clown paintings. Need I say more? Ok, awesome photobooth and drink specials.
I really enjoyed the vegan dog, nice big and sausage dog with plenty of toppings, I'll definitely be going back
Cool bar with a chill but nice ambiance. Sick vending machine in the back too. Some drink specials also.
This place has so much kurb appeal. If you know you know and if you don't., you'll learn. Thanks kurby.
A goth metal bar with tons of character and characters! Bartenders were all very friendly and helpful!
Great drinks, atmosphere, and friendly service. However, its not a bar for the pop tarts. Just sayin.
Very cool place with good drinks.. rock n metal bar, lots of metal heads with leather jackets n studs
Great bar! Best happy hour in town. The owners and staff are amazing! Live music too! What a gem.

Dark & big cool booths, great food but full of dumdums these days. Hit it right when it opens
Vintage playboy centerfold menus, ALWAYS great music, comfy and delicious food. Punk rock!
You've at least gotta drop by here to check out the velvet paintings adorning the walls.
Awesome Smash Burger at 1am.

A great rock and roll bar! Great food, great atmosphere, and a great happy hour!
Best assortment of velvet paintings I've ever seen. Jello shots and cheap beer.
Star bar is a great place to party. It's a small but nice rock and roll bar
Nice bar, great service! Ask Donny about Nova Scotia, he has some stories!
Classic spot. Great new menu, try the lamb sliders or the burger …
Good atmosphere, only been here once, but I would definitely come back
Fun bar, great staff and nice outdoor seating at non hipster prices
It was really empty and nothing special. Just a little bit boring.
Good music, tasty food, friendly staff. Not much more to ask for.
Always liked this place even if it seems a little elite at times
Visit there 4 years ago but still my best bar in the world ever
Sorry spot! Gets one star, just like its "business" sign, lol!
C'mon REALLY?!!!! This is one of the coolest joints in town!!!
They have vegan Jell-O shots!!! What more can you ask for!
Great music, great patrons, great staff. Love this place!
Dark. Reasonable price. Chill punk vibe if you follow. A+
Great bar to relax and have a couple beers with friends.
filthy cheap drinks, the best kind of sleaze for company
Hard rock/ punk/ goth bar. Good service. Aquired taste.
Totally a dive bar. But, great service, food, and beer.
Good food. Good people watching. Portlandia in effect.
Great happy hour. One of my favorite bars in Portland
Unbelievable Bar food. Great service. Will gg again.
Great scenery, people, location and atmosphere.
I kinda remember this place. I got blitzed.
Great music, friendly service, good vibes.
I came here on a date, the music is good.
A great place to run into ex-Seattlites.
