Should be a negative stars category. Absolutely DESTROYED our Christmas Eve. After weeks of looking forward to a special Christmas Dinner my family and I got dressed up only to have to make our way through some seriously sad & scary scenes of homeless drug addicts shooting up in the street. We made it to the hotel but instead of being welcomed into the restaurant we were stopped at the entrance and sat in the DRAFTY HOTEL LOBBY! (I still can't believe this happened) We booked a table weeks ago, one would assume, inside the restaurant. We were eventually left outside by ourselves, as the other tables finished and left, definitely NOT the Christmas Party atmosphere we were looking forward to. Our server was kind but even he was embarrassed by the poor timing of courses to the "wine pairing". Not surprising as we were fully out of sight. Even more offensive when at $90 per person he tried to explain that it was supposed to be a 2oz pour! This little detail was not included on the menu. The food was edible but not worth the price and the entire evening left us regretting not having walked out immediately. We felt unwelcomed & robbed in every way. We also felt disgusted at having spent our month's grocery budget on one lousy meal and then having to navigate through pure squalor to get to our car. We wanted to support a business trying to improve and build up downtown SF but instead left feeling ashamed and disgusted by ourselves so throwing away so much money when so many have so little. We couldn't get home fast enough. This is NOT the place to celebrate any kind of special occasion! (No photos as this is one evening we are ALL trying to forget)

first lot we booked (469 Stevenson) was closed. still waiting for refund on that reservation. 2nd lot (440 Stevenson) even though we paid for parking until 10:30 attendant informed us he would be locking the doors at 10:00. All garage signs state they are open until 11pm but I guess someone wanted to go home early.

One of the few remaining affordable options for afternoon tea in the city. We booked on OpenTable and requested a table in their main blue dining room. For teas, we selected the Aged White Peony (a pleasant white tea) and Chai Assam. The Chai Assam was unfortunately completely undrinkable due to its high concentration of black pepper. They did not initially provide any milk, cream, or sugar, however, even after requesting and adding cream, the tea did not improve. After calling over the waitstaff again, we were quickly able to replace it with the Golden Horse, which was excellent! Also great to have a tea strainer to catch any errant tea leaves. We received 4 sandwiches, a scone, cream puff, Madeleine, snowball, apple cinnamon donut hole, macaron, and rainbow cake. The salmon sandwich was our favorite along with the cream puff and rainbow cake. Lovely ambiance and beautiful decor throughout. Waitstaff were friendly and came by frequently to refill water for our tea. Unfortunately, the hotel's in a bit of a rough neighborhood, so I'd recommend parking in a secured parking garage or using Uber/Lyft. We'd also been hoping to visit their rooftop bar, Charmaine's, as walk-ins to avoid their non-refundable reservation fee. I'd been pre-pandemic and really enjoyed their drinks and view. Unfortunately we waited in line for about 30 minutes as the 4th or 5th group in line, confirmed with the staff at the front twice that we were there as walk-ins, and then were told when we reached the front that they were not accepting walk-ins. So you'll need to shell out the $5/person reservation fee if you'd like to visit on the weekend.

Dean and Team at Villon, I wanted to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for your exceptional support and for orchestrating an absolutely flawless wedding reception for us at Villon. Our reception was beyond perfection! It exceeded every dream we had for this special day. The atmosphere, the service, and the overall experience created by you and the Villon staff were nothing short of magical. Every detail was meticulously executed, and we are still basking in the joy of the memories created in that beautiful space. Dean, your professionalism and dedication to our special day did not go unnoticed. You and the entire Villon team played a pivotal role in making our wedding day truly memorable. The attention to detail, the seamless coordination, and the warmth with which we were welcomed made all the difference. We had the most amazing time, and we cannot thank you and the Villon staff enough for contributing to the success of our celebration. Please extend our appreciation to everyone involved in making our day so special. Looking back, we are filled with gratitude for choosing Villon as our wedding reception venue. It truly exceeded our expectations, and we will cherish the memories forever. Once again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our day so extraordinary.

DO NOT RISK SCHEDULING AT THIS RESTAURANT! Months ago, I bought tickets to Mama Mia for my mother’s birthday celebration and planned our family dinner at Villon beforehand so my mom wouldn’t have far to walk to the theater. Tonight—one week before her birthday celebration—I suddenly got an email from Open Table that said my reservation had been cancelled. I was convinced it must be a mistake, so I called the restaurant, only to get a messed up answering machine that would not take a message. Shortly thereafter, I got a voicemail letting me know that the restaurant was now being rented out for a private party so my reservation was no longer valid. I have booked dinners at Villon several times before, but never again. Perhaps it’s “just business” to cancel on the rest of us when someone flashes big money ONE damn week before the night they want your restaurant, but shame on you for agreeing to it. Some of us planned our events months in advance and picked your restaurant to be part of it—I only hope that people considering your restaurant for their important events will read this review and choose an alternative. You don’t deserve the business.

Great New American food, deep classic cocktail list, varied wine, and VERY attentive service! When you sit down to a coupe glass, rather than a wine glass, you know you should start with a cocktail. Among the 49 options (by BV Hospitality, of Trick Dog), the martini is an elegant (and strong!) option. The Chef’s Menu is a great value ($85 for 6 courses), and there are several flashy options for two that are finished at the table – great for a date night! When I went, this included a disappointingly doughy steamed bun, but also a rich, smokey abalone, asparagus on strong cheese, and sauced duck. The wine menu is also notable – lots of interesting choices by the glass around $20, including less common varietals such as Dolcetto, Vermentino, and even a Croatian wine, to say nothing of the wine pairing! On my visit, as a solo diner, I was also comped two glasses of wine and an extra dessert! There's also afternoon tea, which was popular on a Saturday afternoon. The menu, both food and beverages, is certainly deep enough to warrant repeat visits – a local gem!

Food was ok but was disappointed as we were leaving. A waiter who HAD NOT waited on us AT ALL followed me while I was getting my jacket to ask if we had paid for our meal. I informed him we did. As I'm walking through the lobby I hear him yelling trying to get my attention. Again confronting me about a bill we already paid for. I'm assuming the manager followed behind to see what was the commotion. I explained the waiter is harassing us for a bill we indeed paid for. I followed them both in found our actual waitress who confirmed we did pay in cash. Instead of the waiter apologizing he then continued with a non apology stating they had issues last year. Found it interesting he only followed us out but no one else. I'll let you put two & two together. Wanted to try going out for Thanksgiving dinner for the first time and probably never will again after the experience. The food was average , definitely not worthy of the pricing and the service was subpar prior to the stereotyping.

Exquisite- one of the best meals of my life. We were speechless about the mushroom appetizer. VILLON is absolute perfection- from stunning architectural scale of the lobby, to soothing dark tones of restaurant, and sparkly highlights of the dramatic bar. Service was impeccable - everyone. Food was exquisite. The Chef is brilliant… and has PERFECTED the art of delicate crisp to the (GF!) tempura mushroom appetizer, as well as the skin of the chicken and fish entrees. FLAVORS and TEXTURES were magnificent. The entire experience was subtle, yet extraordinary FEAST for the eyes and palate — an absolutely perfect meal before a show at the Orpheum in SF! Wow. Words don’t come close.

My partner and I visited here for brunch on a Saturday a week back. Decor aside—which is a beautiful Art Deco style in a soothing blue tone—the food and pricing left me wanting more. San Francisco is expensive I know, but the food didn’t really hit the mark for me, and it wasn’t for lack of trying. The avacado toast was decent, and as expected. The Villon breakfast had a variety of options on the plate, and all were half decent, but it was an overwhelming buffet of random things that appeared to be warming out back for some time. Cocktails were a no go based on price. Service was ok. On pricing, it ain’t cheap. Also, the website appears to constantly list incorrect prices to the actual menu. As at 9/28, everything listed online was $1-2 more in store than online. I now see $28 listed for the Villon breakfast, whereas it was $20 the day I was there. It DEFINITELY isn’t worth $28–save your money folks.

This was my first tea experience in America, and it was awesome; prior to this, I had only had tea in London and France so as you can see the expectations were set pretty high. First off, the hotel that Villon is located is gorgeous. Loved the vintage décor, the bar was really nice and the hotel itself was centrally located. The tea experience itself was wonderful. They have it from 2-5pm just outside the restaurant. The tea sandwiches and pastries were delish and of good quality, tea selection was nice and the ambiance a delight, however I would say the only thing that took away from the tea ‘experience’ is that they mixed it with other patrons having just a drink and/or lunch. I would’ve much preferred have all those doing tea in one area bc it just takes away from the ‘tea’ ambiance. Other than that, everything was great. Oh, service was also awesome; everyone was attentive to our needs.

I brought my niece here for her birthday based on the pictures and reviews. First, this inside a hotel, which is okay. Second the food was below average. It was okay in presentation, well only one was. They lacked flavor on so many levels. The pictures I took are not worth posting. I wish I had cooked for her at home it would have been delicious. Some of the staff were okay but overall creepy and not very approachable. $22 for a waffle with sliced apples, it was a joke, I could not believe the lack of flavor, I was so disappointed in myself for ordering that. People need to start writing real reviews, or is it majority of people eat bland foods?! Our food was also cold, the juice I ordered was $12 but it came in a bottle, not even fresh.

Perfect for a romantic afternoon tea. Modern urban interior, knowledgeable staff, high quality tea selection and fantastic scones. $45/person was worth it. The black tea was awesome. The smoked salmon sandwich was the best by far. Great for a date, first or otherwise - if in a date, you may want to combine it with the rooftop bar on top! Book in advance and only available on the weekend. Attire smart casual. NOTE: it's super hard to find parking around the area so give it 10-15 minutes unless you want to use the vallet.

Swanky place but service is terrible! Ordered a burger no cheese... Lettuce, Tomato, Onion please. The blond male server was not attentive at all. When the food came out, I asked for LTO again and his response "I can't do that." okay... What about a side salad so I can put that in my burger? Salad comes out a few minutes later with cheese. I send it back after telling him again no cheese. Let's just say he was too scared to serve us and we never saw him again. He passed our table to his coworker who was much more pleasant and accommodated my need for simple lettuce. It's not that hard! Food is just okay, overpriced and small portions. Wouldn't recommend eating here.

In an era of minimalism in dining, Villon is bringing back the excess of the 80s in the best possible way. A friend and I enjoyed the 3-course Broadway menu before the opera and everything about the evening was delightful; the highlight was the summer stonefruit salad that had at least a dozen textures and flavors and yet worked together perfectly. We went on a Wednesday evening and the restaurant was surprisingly empty (though maybe not surprising given the location); this is an underrated gem and I cannot wait to go back.

One of the best meals we've had here. The service is impeccable and the ambiance for dinner was romantic but lively. Believe it or not, the salads were a highlight! Fresh and inventive ingredients, like ice cream on one of them, wow! The entrees were steak and pork katsu, both dishes completely unique in flavors but both were delicious and perfectly filling. The desserts, a baked Alaska and an apple cake were the best way to end this amazing meal. Will definitely be back.

Insanely creative plated and cocktails. Our waiter was incredible and super attentive and helpful with deciding what to eat. We went with scallops, kale salad, and Brussels sprouts for apps. The scallops were like butter and the Brussels sprouts were insanely delicious. For mains we did tri tip and halibut. Halibut was plated beautifully and absolutely melted in my mouth. After dinner our waiter was able to get upstairs to Charmaine’s without having to queue. Overall a special experience and a lovely interior to enjoy it in!

Came for lunch. The decor and architecture is beautiful and the food was equally as good. This place has THE BEST clam chowder we’ve ever had. It’s so full of premium ingredients. It’s also gluten free, creamy but not heavy. We even considered to walking over just to order the clam chowder. Flan was also jiggly light but also complex. I’m from Montreal so desserts are extremely important to me. I’m against overly sweet desserts. Fiancé also saw an actor eating here when he came once, forgot who, since I’m bad with names.

Cannot say enough good things about our afternoon tea experience here! Very attentive staff and creative accompaniments for the tea. The aged peony white tea was something I’ve never had before and therefore felt was quite memorable! The hibiscus tea was flavorful as well! The space is absolutely beautiful and the lobby of the Proper hotel in which the restaurant is located is equally a nice space to look around. Just a few hours here felt like a mini vacation! Great job to everyone on the staff!

This is just awesome! Ceviche tostada has many different textures and flavors, crispy, crunchy, bouncy from shrimp at the same time! Chicken sandwich is almost like italian version which has many italian components like motadella sausage, provolone, pepperoni etc,. What i love about the sandwich from big bite is that they are using chicken thigh instead of breast which tastes really awesome. This chicken sandwich is another level!

James provided impeccable service and had a sincerely pleasant demeanor that made our experience that much more memorable. The uni on toast was to die for, soo buttery and rich! The oysters selected was soo fresh. We also visited the rooftop bar that James graciously escorted us to.

Food delicious. Hotel stylish, cool. The actual restaurant is smaller than expected, off the lobby. Minus star for downtown SF. Not the hotel's fault, yet getting to, and leaving in that area deeply sad, dirty. You should visit, and support a business trying to turn around downtown. Travel in pairs+.

Fantastic dining experience. Atmosphere is excellent with a rich history shared by some of the staff if you ask. Food was refined and innovative. All of our dishes were excellent including the fish, duck and brussels sprouts. Dessert menu is a must. Great bar/seating area. Service was very good. Overall, a great dining experience, and an easy walk to the Orpheum.

What an amazing visual experience!! The care put into the decoration is admirable. Besides the aesthetic, the servers are nice and professional. We ordered their sides because the mains weren't vegetarian-friendly meals. They have full bar, but no bullet bourbon, and the drinks are fantastic!

I am almost never motivated to leave a review but the food was excellent. Everything in the plate looked and was delicious (ordered the Halibut) - not.a.missed.beat to be found! The oysters were also a big highlight.

We had an amazing pre-theater dinner here. The combinations of flavors were outstanding starting with the chef's complimentary nibble. Cocktails were also deliciously and carefully crafted.
