I like Westmount! I personally think it's a pretty good school overall. The big reason people that are going into high school are confused about that want or is going to Westmount is the self paced program. What is it? Is it worth it? Will I fail cause of it? For the 1st question: The self paced program is a specialized program where there are usually no due dates (But may differ in grade 9) and it's up to the students to get the work done. To go more in depth let me tell you some more stuff regarding the self paced. Every few weeks in your agenda it will say that a unit is due. Technically it isn't but that's if you're on track. If you fall behind in the beginning that's fine. I definitely have fell behind in the beginning. As long as you get some units done then you're good. However you can only hand in 2 units a week (Some teachers will let you hand in more if you're on the verge of not handing it in before the semester ends). Now here's another interesting part. There's another exclusive feature here at Westmount called "Carrying Over". A Carry Over is when you don't hand in your work before the semester ends. What this will do is not let you fail and postpone your exam and let you finish the course so you don't lose a credit. However you'll be behind on your next course so you'll need to so some catching up. Overall though it's a huge help for those who need it. One last quick thing. At the beginning of the year you'll get your picture taken and you'll be given a student ID card. DO NOT LOSE IT! It'll make signing into the Learning Commons a whole lot easier. If not you'll have to go to the office each time and grab a slip and get it signed by your teacher and then show the Lady at the L.C desk, instead of asking your teacher, teacher signs your agenda, walk into L.C and swipe your card. Also don't lose your agenda either or the same thing will happen. Also the Learning Commons (L.C) is essentially the school library but a lot better than the library's you see at other schools. There's around 50ish computers in there. A test area, A quiet zone, and lots of space. Also it's air conditioned! Anyways if you would like to go to the L.C just ask your teacher if you can go and then the teacher will sign your agenda and then you go to the L.C and swipe your student ID. Also doing this can essentially make it extremely easy to skip class, most people use it to work. If you're going to skip though just go to the rec or the forest and then show up 5 minutes before class ends. Sorry for the parents reading this that I just told your kid how to skip class but people do it all the time. One more thing for the Student ID cards. Around in October at the rec center you can use your Student ID to go into either the gym or the game room. The gym lets you play basketball and badminton and the game room lets you do lots of cool stuff like: Play Xbox 360, use one of the 2 computers, play pool, play Foosball, and play air hockey (Use the one at the back the one at the side is horrible). The gym is open Monday and Friday and the game room is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Now let's move to another important topic. Flex Days! These are amazing! Once into October there's a flex day once every 2 weeks. A Flex Day is a day where you create your own schedule. What you do is on Wednesday before the flex day you'll have half of your last period class to fill out your schedule for the upcoming flex day. When it comes time for a flex day you show whichever period teacher you have your schedule and go off to your class you put on. It can be any class you want! (As long as it's open for use) And yes you technically give yourself a double lunch! (Just don't put it on your schedule) and you can leave after 5th period if you want! (Again just don't put it on your schedule). That pretty much wraps up the first question. OK the next 2 questions differ in what type of person you are. Is it worth it? If you can handle doing work to stay on pace then yeah it is! Same goes for the next question. You won't fail if you get your work done! Thanks!
Honestly it depends on the teachers you get. This school isn't as "self-paced" as you may think. Some teachers do NOT follow the self-paced program at all. This school is best suited for music students and any students wanting to go into the trades (construction, manufacturing, programming etc.). Seriously the Tech Hall is the saving grace for this school.
I went to Westmount for three years before I was forced to leave. I liked the self-paced progam. Most of the teachers (the ones who didn't get arrested for sexual exploitation of minors) were flexible and understanding. We had a string of principals over the course of two years, all of which were often unavailable to deal with issues happening in school.
Both my kids attend this school. At first we were nervous since the learning is largely self-paced, however our fears were soon alleviated as the report cards came in. Grades were great. Teachers are supportive and this school has by far the best music program. Can't say enough good things about Westmount and its teachers.
Parents, be warned that learning is self paced. But this isn't actually a bad thing. I'd argue kids are more successful because of this learning. It's a great school environment with many teachers who are committed to making sure every kid can complete learning successfully and on their own time
There have been some obstacles in this school, but many of the nicest staffs work there and the teachers have been very helpful!!! Mr.bell for French is probably one of the nicest teacher you will ever see. …
I have never felt so welcome, safe, and cared about during all of my education. I should have made the switch to Public School sooner. Thank you Westmount. You really made me see secondary education in a whole new light.
Organized school, cooperative stuff, intelligent students Self directing school experience helped a lot in developing students personality and enriched their sence of responsibility and organization skills.
Self paced program was great! My teachers were super understanding and kind. However during my stay there everyone was kind but it was like I didn't really fit in with anybody.
Had a good time at Westmount, it was lit. Bomb threats were excellent, as well as the multiple fire alarms. Overall it was a great experience. 10/10 would recommend.
For some reason the summer is perpetually preserved inside the school all year round, but other then that, 5 stars! Please fix the heating.
Both my children attend this school and are of mixed race students that have endured discrimination by stuff sport coaches
I was in my English class submitting my culminating project when suddenly I tripped and fell.
Bad school for trash people to many league of legends losers do not go to this school
My locker door wouldn't open, partially because I forgot my combination but still.
This is the best school that i've been, and for that reason, it gets a 1 out of 5
The computers in my english class ran on windows 7 and were slower than a potato.
Horrible place, awful program, and it never has enough coca cola in the caf.
