I recently stopped here to change my socks/shoes in the bathroom. They had gotten wet due to unexpected April snow storm and having to get out of my car after getting stuck on Burnside. I asked an employee if I could change my shoes in the bathroom and he asked to look in my bag first. After confirming my bag had only shoes in it, he gave me the bathroom code and I changed shoes. After I came out of the bathroom several employees were waiting outside the door and giving me strange looks. I proceeded to call my wife to see if she knew which routes were open for me to get home to the west side (26 and Burnside were completely closed going W due to branches and I was effectively stranded in Portland after working all night). I noticed the whole time I was in the phone the employees were watching me really intently. My original plan was to buy a snack/drink while I was there since my normal 40 min commute had already stretched into its 3rd hour, but I felt extremely uncomfortable by this point and just wanted to leave. Once I determined which route I wanted to try next I tried leaving and was surrounded at the door by 3 employees. They accused me of stealing based solely on the fact that I was there ''suspiciously long''. I showed them my bag again, which only had my wet shoes and socks in it. Instead of apologizing and admitting they were wrong after seeing proof that i wasn't stealing, they did not apologize and instead doubled down on how suspicious I was as if they were somehow proved to be right. They seemed embarrassed that they were wrong. What exactly was the plan if I had actually stolen something? Were these employees going to do a citizens arrest and physically restrain me? Are the zupans employees regularly acting as vigilantes? If I did steal something I woundnt just stand there until cops arrived so that would really be the only effective plan. They kept mentioning how '' weird'' the neighborhood was, but if theft was such a common problem wouldn't it make more sense to have a security guard on duty or loss prevention dept. rather than having grocery store employees possibly escalating the theft of a few groceries into a potentially dangerous physical altercation? This whole event was insulting, poorly executed, and helped make what was already an extremely stressful morning even worse.
I don't have a problem with this grocery store. They have a lot of great items in here. But I'm not a fan of the store manager. She's one hell of a snooty individual. A security company I previously worked for, sent me here for security purposes. There was a clear miscommunication of where I was supposed to stand post. The trainer for the company I worked for, showed up extremely late. Eventually, the PIC and the security company trainer, told me, I could stay in the store, since it was 30 something degrees outside. So here comes the store manager. She definitely had a issue with me. When she decided to speak to me, it was in a demeaning tone. I'm a 50 plus year old black man, so I picked up on the tone she was trying to set. Long story short, she made me stand outside. No biggie. That was 01/02/22. 01/03/22, as she was leaving for the day, she walked out of the store with a dark haired woman. Gave me the side eye. In my head, I'm thinking, whatever. The day before, I requested that the security company place me somewhere else. And they agreed to do so. To the store manager, I've shopped in this store a few times as a regular customer. For the most part, most of the store employees are great, and showed me great customer service. As a security guard, customers who have more money than the store manager, treated me better. I'm one of those people, who believe that I get to come to my own conclusion, for why you treated me the way you did. I'm going to go with that you're not too fond of black people. The way I look at it, I didn't once show the store manager, ANY disrespect. Even after she disrespect me more than enough times. My advice to the store manager, grow the hell up. You don't get to project your twisted thoughts on someone because you have a position of authority. How you attempted to treat me, shows how classless you are. Your issues with me, wasn't my problem...
I miss what you his store used to be. Now, upon entering, I am confronted with the worst rotten fish smell I’ve ever smelled anywhere in my life. This rotten fish smell has been consistently present for months now. How is this possible? The open, leafy produce was moved to be directly next to the swinging bathroom/janitorial area doors. This was also great cause for alarm. The meat department is highly suspect to me since buying bad sausage and bad bacon from the meat counter. And, along with the ‘fishiness factor’ I noticed that neither the ceiling fans nor the fresh air vent that hangs over the open meat counter has been cleaned in a very long time. I wonder what cobwebs, dust, bugs, etc. are falling from directly above where they work on meat. The one department that continues to excel in cleanliness, quality, customer service and TASTE is the service deli. How can the rest of the store be so filthy when the most challenging department is doing so well? Even the wood floors are filthy- they used to be spotless. For those of you who are not locals, this is a very sad day for a Portland original. I would never let a store I was in charge of present itself like this. I think this is a truly sad day for Zupan’s.
This was the first grocery store I stopped by after recent moving to Portland and I absolutely love it. There’s a great selection of fruits even some less common ones, all sorts of different meat products you can buy fresh, speciality grocery items throughout, a deli, and a small cafe within. I love coming here to do some light shopping and maybe grabbing something to eat or drink from the deli and cafe. As others have said, prices are a bit high, the store is on the small side, and the deli sandwiches can be hit or miss. As far as the staff goes, some of them are super friendly, especially around the cafe and bakery areas, and others indifferent to you being there, particularly the checkout area. Still, I do enjoy shopping here and definitely recommend it to anyone in the area wise looking for unique grocery items, cooking for one or two, or just want a simple cafe to go to during lunch.
This is a wonderful store the beautiful flowers out front make a nice presentation when you walk up. They have a cheese section that is nice some I have never heard of. There was a staff member to answer any questions you might have about the cheese. They have adorable stuffed animals mixed in with all the food. The cakes, the pies, the food is fantastic. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. I really enjoyed going to the store and it’s a place you cannot leave without looking at everything & buying something really tasty & some flowers. Everything is arranged beautiful from the flowers to all the fruits & vegetables that are displayed in the produce section it is a wonderful experience to shop at Zupan’s Market. Be sure to stop by and pick something up anything from cheese or meat in there deli section is amazing!
My goodness.... I want to live in this store. Everything is beautiful and seems to be such quality. While visiting Portland we popped in here a few times for some of their fresh juices, deli meats, cheeses, and pre-made salad dishes. Everything was delicious! This is a fancy grocery store and more of an experience rather than just a simple market for groceries. Given this bit of context, the prices are high but for some items, like the freshly prepared things, they are worth the price. The wine is particularly overpriced in my opinion so I did not purchase that here. I found most of the deli food and dessert items to be fairly priced though and certainly worth the cost. If you are from out of town, you should for sure EXPERIENCE this market - it is quite stupendous.
Best specialty market and wine shop in Portland. Superb butcher shop and fishmonger. Very best locale to obtain perfect, fresh veal scaloppini. Prime arrays of fresh, line-caught, wild seafood, and quite decent shellfish, too. Superlative French, Italian, and Spanish wines on offer--look for top-flight Cavas, French Cremants (great rapport quality/price), and sumptuous North Italian reds (Sangioveses live here!). Very fine cheese shop on premises and a great deli section for delectable take-aways. Very professional butchers will prepare any custom cut and accomplish ground versions of choice cuts while you wait. Excellent selection of Italian-made and hand-made pastas on offer. Primo selection of craft beers also. What's not to love?? So Go Already!
I went in to return some Twin Brook milk jugs that have a $2.50 deposit on them that I have saved up over the last few weeks they were pint size jars to add. The security guard asked if there was a cap on them because I brought 10 I guess that's a lot and the although he was very nice the security guard, the cashier answered him with a very condescending tone unfortunately like I was doing something wrong by turning in the milk jugs that I had bought there and then he asked if I wanted cash I answered isn't that what I paid the deposits in?very humiliating very rude. This is not the first time I've had it an account that's like this there
Beautiful store Everything was so nicely put on the shelf’s. The floral group was doing such an amazing job outside making such cute flowers. The floral was top notch. As I expirenced the inside it was so very organized. The staff was friendly. The freshly squeezed Orange juice was to die for (Delicious) I also grabbed a container of fresh fruit……… The Mango was perfect I diddnt even care of how much any of it cost because the quality of everything from the fruit to the experience was top notch!!!!! Thank you for a great experience. Next time I am in the area I will only be shopping here.
Zupan's is like an upscale Whole Foods. Excellent produce, great cheese and bread sections, wide selection of freshly prepared premium meats, and all the little specialty things you can't find anywhere else. Only place in Portland that has Bellwether Farms whole milk basket hand-dipped ricotta, which has a texture like gelato, and makes superb Italian dishes like lasagna and raviolis. The store also has an extensive handmade pasta section. You definitely get what you pay for! If you are having guests in town and want to make the best dinner possible, this is the place to shop.
Thanks for adding to the prepared food! I often look for vegan options and maybe find one. Today I found a few! I chose the binh minh kale and tofu salad. (I think that is what it was called.) The kale, peanuts, and tofu tasted fresh and the ratio was great. The heat was good. I also appreciated that it was not too sweet. Sometimes Vietnamese seasoning is too sweet for me. Unfortunately, it was oily and I could not taste any vinegar at all. Possibly it was just forgotten? Maybe double check the recipe? I want to get this again but will need the dressing to be made correctly!
If you can afford the prices, this is a top notch store that has extremely good quality of fresh fruits and vegetables, including pre-packaged. Deli has very good salads, bakery very good variety of pastries, pies, cakes with both large and small portions. I get fresh poke here as well as they have the best quality outside getting it from a good restaurant...or Hawaii! This store is well stocked and has very good variety of imported and local goods. They are a local family owned store and the staff friendly and helpful. High recommend this and their other stores.
Great merchandising of food, which few grocery stores do. The products there are curated. If they are on the shelves they are likely there because they are excellent rather than someone made a deal for shelf space. Thoughtful mix of utility-based brands and high-end experience make it easy to shop there. People are well educated on their responsibilities. Great deli, competent seafood dept, and a cheese shop to please nearly anyone. Their wine varied as well with representation of local wineries but substantial wines domestic and France, Italy, etc.
I was always a fan as a guest, but now I am an employee. I have never worked at such an inclusive, warm and rewarding establishment. Mike, the owner, takes time to meet new employees and say hi to the ones he knows. I'm fairly new, but I haven't heard a single negative thing about him. The goods might be priced a little higher than your standard grocery store, but this place is a true experience. As a former chef, this is a virtual cornucopia of fun and hard to find items. Shop here knowing that staff are happy and well taken care of. Mangia Bene!
Why is everyone reviewing this place willing to pay more for sub-par. I get charging more for organic or boutique, but standard things that one can get for 1/3 the price is ridiculous. They sell old bread from local bakeries - just go to the bakery for fresh bread that won't break a tooth when you bite into it. Also, their flowers are beautiful, but they will die within days. It is a beautiful store to shop, but the price markups are insulting and gouge their customers.
If you are willing to pay the prices for high quality food, this is the place for you! Never have I been disappointed with the grocery products, top notch quality meats and seafood, freshest of the freshest produce, tasty bakery goods, and a huge array of other products to choose from. A clean space to shop and friendly staff always down to help! Food samples make it fun to shop as well! Lastly, the flower section has unique flowers to choose from! Love shopping here!!
I went to this store today on the recommendation of an acquaintance. Such lovely items! Very helpful and friendly staff. I'm in a wheelchair and I felt welcomed and like I could get around easily in the store. It's very expensive but there are lots of items there that you couldn't find anywhere else. I would definitely come back, especially if I was looking to get treats. They have a beautiful deli. Their meat department and produce section are outstanding as well.
Everyone in the store was incredibly helpful. I had a great experience with the cheese lady and she was so knowledgeable about every single cheese and so helpful. Also the second I stood in the wine section someone came up and asked if I needed help and they were so kind and knowledgeable as well. I wish every grocery store was like this! I’ll definitely be back and choose this Zupan‘s in particular because of the great service And of course the quality of the food
I like the variety that Zupan's has. And the energy in the store isn't so bad either. Ridiculous pricing though. Just flat out. There are better *Quality* foods for cheaper than many of Zupan's *Specialty* foods. I've only been to 2 of the stores and like the W Burnside location best so far. They seem to have the most variety. They have the bakery/cafe and fresh juice + smoothie bar. And SO MANY LOCAL BAKERY'S GOODIES!!! All in all, happy this place is here.
A great place to get items not found in other stores. One of the best meat and seafood counters around and the fresh veggies and pasta offered is top of the line. It is literally a treat for my family to make the long trek to Portland from Washington to buy great products. Wine, beer and deli section is also the best with a freat selection of unique wines, great beer and fresh deli items. Zupans is definitely one of the greatest grocers on the planet.
I used their florist. Just wow. A close friend experienced a loss in their family and nobody else was available for same day delivery in Portland. I called Zupans and explained the situation. They charged a minimal rush fee and had flowers on my friend’s doorstep within two hours of ordering. I can’t say enough about how much I appreciated their understanding of how important it was to expedite this important delivery. Will definitely use them again.
I bought the holiday sides....so so good. And because I am stupid, at times, I went today to Slabtown New Seasons to get hot stuffing and mashed potatoes...2 days after the Zupans...and ...blech. Honestly, there is noooooo comparison. Theirs is fake and lifeless tasting. Zupans is seasoned and good...which is why I ran out so quickly! And should have went back to Zupans to scratch the itch of wanting more holiday food. Lesson learned, the hard way.
This store is absolutely lovely! So many local products are represented. Also, it's organized very cute and everyone is so nice. Great cheese selection! I got the "Oregon artisian cheese and food trail" map from the extremely pleasant lady from the cheese section (probably she is the manager, idk, but she is so knowledgeable and cares so much of sharing about local cheese makers) - this is my to do list for next time in the area!
Well this a very special grocery store. The attitude and character is the best I have ever found. Everyone that I have met that serves there are completely committed to taking care of the customers. Very good food and fresh. All departments all the time. I have ordered specialty items, holiday dinner, bakery . Always great for years. Bottom line....the Zupan culture makes you feel like you are a member. It is your store Enjoy
If you are looking to go upscale groceries, wide selection of cheeses, wines, meats etc. Zupans is the king in Portland. While there are others that also carry fine foods, Zupans has the size and locations to make it a viable sustainable business. Parking is always a welcome. In short, Zupan’s understands their customers and the price point to make it a value proposition in the high end grocery segment
Baked goods are pretty weak and the recipes seem off. Also what happened to the Cioppino? That was the best thing in this place…The prices in this store are unreal expensive. I can’t even fathom spending this kind of money on food or how this place stays in business. I guess the rich folks really need their shopping space to look a certain way, or if it’s not pricey it must not be the best, right?
We were having a get together for coworkers to say thank you. An employee came over looked in our cart and said those are for customers... my friend and I said we are customers, these are appetizers for our party. They said no, you are buying too many (We had 1 cart of food)...Ummm okay, and we walked out. Needless to say the staff at Whole Foods had a great laugh as they happily took our money.
This store has been a favorite of mine for many years. The staff there are like family. I always find what I need there but I'm also regularly surprised with new products in their produce, meat, and specialty sections. The holiday menus are excellent and the wine choices are abundant. I do miss their poke section but I'm hoping that it will reappear someday when COVID is a thing of the past.
Best cheese selection we found on our recent visit to Portland. We had fun, useful conversations with Brooks in the coffee aisle, the young lady running the cheese department, two men in the meat department and a young man in the wine department. Yes, some items are spendy, but not out of line with expectations for what we got. Impressive.
Ever been to whole foods? Well, this is like that on Crack x3. Or maybe not similar at all . I was in condiment heaven. I don't know what else to say. This place is pretty amazing. They have a great selection of already made foods you can take to go and espresso as well. You must stop in here if you like Specialty foods.
Pricey but the quality and variety of products is absolutely insane. The people and workers are beyond friendly. They have samples literally at every station. Some of the nicest meat and seafood which clearly seems better then whole foods & others. It’s a weird confusion as too how good this market is. Stop by and don’t be let down.
Fantastic grocery store. The workers here are friendly and very knowledgeable. My friend and I stopped in to grab some caviar. This is one of the few grocery stores that carry some of the higher end items. I would also highly suggest checking out their special wine cellar. They carry a superior selection of wine at a great value.
Chi chi type market. Excellent sandwiches. I also purchased a Espresso drink with lots of froth but I set it on top of my jeep while putting items in. Forgot I did that and proceeded down the street then got on the freeway. Hmmm I wonder what it taste like? The Staff is friendly and very helpful. Very positive experience.
Quirky supermarket with local products that you didn't know you love. There is a deli with fresh made sandwiches and a soup bar. There is a bakery worth cakes and bread. There is an extensive wine selection and lots of fresh produce. I love shopping here as I always find a new favorite food that I never tried before.
Wonderful selection. The rows are a little tight in places which makes it hard to navigate and stay 6 feet apart but I wouldn't want to see any of their selection reduced and shoppers seem considerate and willing to wait for space to clear before moving through tight areas. Wonderful baked goods and deli.
What is this magical place?!?! It's well-curated, staff is helpful, and immensely delightful to shop at. Pricey? Yes. Enough so to make Whole Foods look like a bargain. But they do a great job balancing pricer gourmet food options with more common items/brands. Lots of great local options too.
I’m such a fan of Zupans. If I’m having a dinner party and need some special steak, I can always count on the stellar butchers and staff to deliver. The produce is always the best in town and they have a fabulous cheese selection. Thanks for always being there for us over the decades!
This is still one of my main stops when visiting Portland! You are never disappointed with the quality of food here! Everything is top notch. I buy stuff here and bring it to my hotel room instead of room service. So worth it! Come for tasty delectables, you won’t be disappointed!
Nice store in comparison to what is around this dump of a town. Would give 4 stars if the meat department would have used gloves while grabbing my meat guy just picked up my steak with his bare hands , Imagine what is going on that customers aren't seeing ⁉️❓❓❓❓❓ …
Expensive but worth it to treat yourself once in a while. You won't be disappointed... Exceptionally good quality food and an amazing selection of beer and wine. Staff are always very helpful and quite often they have some excellent samples available.
Specialty grocery shop featuring healthy choices at great prices. There is a full service deli, bakery, produce department and wine selection, all with the standard fare plus more. I like the fresh soups and sandwich selection for a quick lunch.
Great food, great quality, but pricey. Everything is worth it but you won't find budget options for most products. I'd love to see them find ways to draw in more more equitable products to offer great food to a wider group of customers.
If you're a fancy type and love over priced items? Its top drawer stuff, but 20 bucks for virgin olive oil? Now, their ready made area? Worth every penny. Great food! Highly recommend their CinnaBuns with cream cheese icing. Holy …
Best nectarines I have ever had. Beautiful produce all around. The chocolate rum mousse cake is scary delicious. But I'm not paying 9 dollars for a mini cake. Would NEVER go there for regular groceries. Only go during nectarine season.
This was the first time I've been to a Zupan's in at least 10 years. I bought some pretty/very fragrant flowers for my better half and a couple drumsticks for myself. I have to say, the florists (appropriate title?) were awesome!
If Whole Foods or New Seasons is too cheap and/or low-class for you, then you will really love this place Nice, very attractive store with great groceries, pre-made foods, and a really great floral area.
I went there for a piece of cake and the prices were outlandish parade but I worked next door to the store for many years and love their deli food even though it's way overpriced. It's well worth it
Great selections every season with such creative decorations! It feels like walking into a country store, with fresh finds and delectable deli selection, but it's right here in the city.
I took out a star because the smoothie called ‘a walk in the park’ was no walk in the park at all. It was so sour. And only 2Tb of coconut water and lots of ice cubes lol what a joke.
Great food bar. Very pricey for the average item. Great spot to find some excellent beers that may sell out fast at the average bottle shop. Quality meat selection and produce.
Shopping is actually fun here. Lots of unique grocery items and really good, fresh ready made meals to take home. Prices are high but so is the quality of their groceries
I love to walk around Zupan's early in the morning when the meat and produce are amazingly arranged just so. It'd just be nice if I could actually afford to shop here...
Hands down, Portland's finest grocery store. They have a truly amazing deli, best meat counter, and unique finds on every aisle. Spendy but you get what you pay for.
Food should be affordable and accessible for everyone. There’s no rhyme or reason that food ingredients, something people need to sustain life - is this expensive.
Very nice employees, always has some new and fun product to try, perfect size store to get anything you want and still get in and out quickly when you need to.
I get my lunches from the deli several times each month. Every time I go they are so helpful and friendly no matter who is helping me. They deserve an award!
Youll pay for it, but Zupan's is possibly the greatest, small grocery store in the world! Great wine department, fresh meats/seafood and produce/fruit!
The meat, fish and produce is the best. Be ready to dish out some $$. But the quality is outstanding. My favorite place to get meat products.
A beautiful family owned market that's a joy to shop, but expect to pay about 20% for most products when compared to a chain grocery store.
Everything about Zupan's is reliably great. I especially like their meats. Just be prepared to pay more for that greatness.
the overweight lard filled security hard has nothing better to do than have the manager chase you down over a plastic cup
One of my favorite food stores. Gourmet selection. I always come out feeling better...like therapy.
Beautiful store, and the staff was really helpful, and got a really nice cupcake from the bakery
Clean and beautiful nice staff crowded and small parking lot so many options in this store
Really cool shop. We always order our Thanksgiving food from this location.
Nice fancy store with a lot of ready to eat options.
