Commonwealth War Cemetery Chittagong is a monument of Commonwealth War Graves Commission commonly known as Chittagong War Cemetery. The Commonwealth War Cemetery is located at No. 19 Badsha Mia Road, Dampara area of Chittagong. The Chittagong War Cemetery was established by the British Army after World War II. During the war, the Allies established a camp of the 14th Army in Chittagong during the Second World War due to the facilities of the 152nd British General Hospital and the training of the army. The hospital was active from December 1944 to October 1945. At that time many soldiers were sent home after recovering from injuries in this camp. And after the end of World War II, a group of British Army established this mausoleum in honor of those who were defeated in the war of life. Initially, around 400 bodies could be buried in this cemetery under the supervision of the army. Also after the end of the war additional dead bodies were shifted from Lusai, Dhaka, Khulna, Jessore, Cox's Bazar, Dhawa Palang, Dohazari, Rangamati, Patia and other temporary burial grounds to this cemetery. However, there are currently 731 tombs out of which 17 have not been identified. There are about 20 graves of national foreign soldiers (Dutch and Japanese soldiers) who died in World War II. Citizens include 378 from the UK, 25 from Canada, 9 from Australia, 2 from New Zealand, 214 from undivided India (Bangladesh, India and Pakistan), 11 from East Africa, 90 from West Africa, 2 from Burma, 1 from the Netherlands and 19 from Japan. John According to profession, there are 543 soldiers, 194 airmen and 14 sailors in this cemetery. In addition to the war graves, there are 4 civilian graves in the cemetery. Besides, there is a memorial Vidyaman of Chittagong-Bombay of Second World War (1939-1945). Built in the first half of the fifties, the cemetery has an open field outside. Access is open for visitors daily from 9 am to 12 noon and 3 pm to 5 pm, which varies slightly during winter and fasting periods. Description: This mausoleum is built on a hilly road in the southwest corner of the Chittagong Medical College. The atmosphere of the entire tomb area is simultaneously picturesque, solemn and serene. A short walk from the main gate of the war cemetery entrance, two small red brick churches and metal gates are visible. A memorial chest is placed in the church on the right hand side. During the Second World War, about 6500 sailors and soldiers died in the Indian merchant sea whose bodies have never been found. Their names and titles are preserved in this memorial book. In the church on the left hand side is the cemetery register, which contains the names, designations and brief introductions of the buried servicemen. From the gate, a magnificent cross-marked altar can be seen in the center of the burial ground. After that there is a prayer room to the east. Outside the War Cemetery are open fields and beautiful gardens. There are 40 species of trees in this cemetery in a beautiful natural environment. There are cedar, gourd, mahogany, eucalyptus, palm trees. Besides, hundreds of local and foreign flowers and plants including gandharaj, beli, patabahar, lenthana, rose, letterleaf have created an extraordinary heavenly charm in the tomb. Rows of carefully preserved graves can be seen in the cemetery. The names of the martyrs are written on each grave. In the afternoon, many tourists come to see the tomb standing at the foot of the hill. Inspection Information: Chittagong War Cemetery is open daily from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

It is near the arts college and close by Finlay's Guest Houses near Chatteshanry Road; a well known road leading to the Hindu Kali Bari Temple. There is no C.W.G.C. road direction sign. The Burial area is situated at the bottom of a slope directly behind Finlay's Guest Houses and is surrounded by a large area planted with a mixture of jungle trees,fruit trees and flowering trees. It is not easily seen from the road. A narrow tarmacked lane leads from the entrance gate to the burial area which is entered through a metal gate flanked by two small brick chapels. The cemetery gates are open from 07.00 to 12 noon and 14.00 to 17.00. Within the cemetery will also be found the Chittagong Memorial which, together with the Bombay 1939-1945 War Memorial, to be found in the Indian Seamen's Hostel Bombay, commemorates over 400 sailors of the former Indian Navy and nearly 6,000 sailors of the former Indian Merchant Navy who were lost at sea during the war years. Each memorial takes the form of a finely bound volume containing the names of the dead. The cemetery was created by the army, and there were originally about 400 burials. বিশ্বযুদ্ধ!!! শুধু বইয়ের পাতায় পড়েছি আজ বাস্তবে কিছু নিদর্শন দেখলাম চট্টগ্রামে,, আমি ৩-৪ বছরে আগেও জানতাম না বাংলাদেশ বিশ্বযুদ্ধের কোন প্রভাব পড়েছিলো,,যদিও সে সময় বাংলাদেশ নামক কোন দেশ ছিলো না,, জায়গটা অনেক নিরিবিলি একদম পরিষ্কার আর পরিপাটি,,বৃটেনের লোকজন কিছু কবর আছে,, কবরের কাছে যাওয়ার অনুমতি নাই,, এজন্য কোন ব্যাক্তির নাম জানা সম্ভব হয়নি,, এরকম ওয়ার সিমেট্রি কুমিল্লায় আছে,ইনশাআল্লাহ আগামীতে যাবো বেড়াতে,, কবর কিছু দিতে পারে না কিন্তু ভাবনার জগৎ এ প্রভাব ফেলতে পারে,, চট্টগ্রাম ওয়ার সিমেট্রি তাঁর প্রমান,,!! বলবো ভবিষ্যৎ এ কবরের কাছে যাওয়ার অনুমতি দিবে প্রশাসন,, তাহলে আরো কিছু জানা সম্ভব,, "" বাড়ি কোথায় আর সমাধি!!!!

Visited in April 2022. Cannot be entered inside by common people and need special permission for that. The outskirt area if the cemetery is nice but the frequented by young couples! This cemetery was established for Commonwealth soldiers and others who died in World War II. It was created by the British Army, and there were originally about 400 burials. Graves have since been transferred to this cemetery from the other sites of Assam and Bangladesh.

This is one of the best places in Chittagong city to enjoy peace and tranquility in that busy city life. The cemetery is in a hilly location. This cemetery is well manicured and beautifully cared for. There are graves from men from many countries and backgrounds. There is even one American grave.

Though it was a hot day, we felt a pleasant peace while visiting there. The entire wind was soothing. Basically its a monument of World war ii. In between 1939-1945; some of the martyrs of British, Indian, East Pakistan, West Pakistan were mass graved there. Though it has a sorrowful story, it is a great historical place to visit.

Most beautiful place in the center of CTG. Local people don’t know the location when you tell them about war cemetery. You have to tell them “pachlaish “where dead people being buried. The place simply beautiful with organized stuff works. Anyone can wrongly mention this place as “Switzerland” when you roam around this whole area.

This place usually opens in the morning and lasts till afternoon - with a few hours lunch/prayer break at noon. This place is free of cost for all people.

This place is nice and quiet as a cemetery has to be. But when you see couples hanging out in a place like this the belief becomes stronger that we are mannerless as a nation.

What a peaceful place to be! The War Cemetery at Chittagong | 1939 -1945 Unfortunately the authority doesn't allow people to be inside the cemetery for the last 6 months as they (visitors) don't visit with responsibility, which results decreasing of the peace and it's beauties....

Such a beautiful place... But I won't recommend it for spending time with friends... You can go and visit the place for a few moments... It's a historical place... So you should visit there ... Again I think it won't be a best place for spending time with friends …

such a soothing & healing place of ctg. but before go must check the schedule of visitors hours. right now the main compound of cemetery is closed for ground maintenance purposes.

A small but immaculately kept cemetery. The graves are from soldiers who fell in World War 2. It is somewhere to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and reflect.

Good to family visit. Most of times it’s renovation/cleaning works ongoing and main cemetery part is closed without any notification. This is very painful for visitor.
