The British had built military airstrips at Tejgaon, Dhaka during the Second World War for operating warplanes towards the Battle of Kohima and other Burmese war threats. After independence in 1947, Tejgaon Airport became the first airport to operate civil aviation in the then-East Pakistan and it was also a station of the Pakistan Air Force. A number of other British-built military airstrips in Bangladeshi territory were also converted into civil airports – some during the East Pakistan period and some after independence. A few others were converted to STOL (Short Take-off and Landing) ports some years ago. And some are still left alone. The airstrips not yet converted to any civil airport of any kind are at Feni, Rajendrapur, Pahar Kanchanpur, Chakaria and Rasulpur. Soon after the Second World War broke out, the British authority felt the need to build Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) stations in Dhaka and other vulnerable places in Bangladeshi territory. The construction of Tejgaon Airport at Dainodda started in 1941; and the building of a landing strip at Kurmitola (Balurghat) started at about the same time. The airstrips at Tejgaon and Kurmitola had military fighter plane landing facilities and the British Royal Air Force used the airstrips for maintenance and storage of their aircraft. There was also a United States Air Force detachment during the war. The first RIAF light fighter landed on the under‑construction runway of Tejgaon at the beginning of 1943 and after the development of the airport facilities, it became the first civil airport of Bangladesh. Today it is a part of BAF (Bangladesh Air Force) Base Bashar. Following the transfer of civilian flights to the newly built Shahjalal International Airport in 1981, Tejgaon was taken under the control of the Bangladesh Air Force.

The first RIAF light fighter (airframe covered with fabrics) landed on the under construction runway of Tejgaon at the beginning of 1943 and after development of the airport facilities, it became the first civil airport. Apart from the British air force, the Ispahani Group and its partners used the airport for operation of an airliner named orient airways established by them in 1946. Since 1947, both domestic and international flights started operations from Tejgaon Airport and within a few years the government started construction of a full-fledged international airport at Kurmitola in and around the British built airstrip.

১৯৪৩ সালে ব্রিটিশদের হাত ধরে এই বিমানবন্দরের কার্যক্রম শুরু হয়। প্রথমে ছিল সামরিক বিমানবন্দর, পরে বেসামরিক। পাকিস্তান আমলে এবং স্বাধীনতা উত্তর বাংলাদেশে এটিই ছিল প্রধান বিমানবন্দর। ১৯৮১ সালে ঢাকার কুর্মিটোলায় নতুন আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দর ( হজরত শাহজালাল আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দর) চালু হলে তেজগাঁও বিমানবন্দরের কার্যক্রম বন্ধ হয়ে যায়। বর্তমানে এই বিমানবন্দরটি বিমানবাহিনীর একটি ঘাঁটি হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে ( বিমানবাহিনী ঘাঁটি খাদেমুল বাশার)। এছাড়াও এখানে বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনীর আর্মি এভিয়েশন গ্রুপ এর ঘাঁটি রয়েছে। র‍্যাব এর বিমান উইং ও এখানে অবস্থিত। বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান অ্যাভিয়েশন অ্যান্ড অ্যারোস্পেস বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অস্থায়ী ক্যাম্পাস তেজগাঁও বিমানবন্দরের উওর দিকে অবস্থিত। এই বিমানবন্দরের নিজস্ব জায়গায় গডে উঠেছে বাংলাদেশের প্রথম বিমান বাহিনী জাদুঘর। আরও সামরিক প্রতিষ্ঠান এই বিমানবন্দরের জায়গা ব্যবহার করে। বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় প্যারেডগ্রাউন্ড ও কিন্তু এখানে অবস্থিত।

The legendary F-86s,MiG-21s used to take off from this airport before the construction of VGHS. Currently this airport is owned by BAF & used by Air Force,Army,Navy,Police & other military or government forces. /In frame an Mi-171Sh of Bangladesh Army & a Bell-212 of BAF landing & the BAF Museum is seen beside the airport.

জার্মানি থেকে ২৪টি Grobe প্রশিক্ষণ বিমান ক্রয়ের চুক্তি সম্পন্ন করেছে বাংলাদেশ বিমানবাহিনী। বিদায়ী বিমান বাহিনী প্রধান এয়ার মার্শাল মসিহুজ্জামান সেরনিয়াবাত Banquet dinner এর সময় জার্মানি থেকে ২৪টি প্রশিক্ষণ বিমান ক্রয় চুক্তির তথ্য নিশ্চিত করেছেন। বিমানবাহিনী প্রধান এসময় দেশে বিমান তৈরী এবং এভিয়েশন ইন্ডাস্ট্রি গড়ে তােলার উপর জোর দেন। এসময় বাংলাদেশ বিমানবাহিনীতে বেশ কিছু আধুনিক সরঞ্জাম সংযােজনের অপেক্ষায় আছে বলেও নিশ্চিত করে

তেজগাঁও পুরনো বিমানবন্দর কালের বিবর্তনে জরাজীর্ণ হয়ে দাড়িয়ে আছে। বাংলাদেশ বিমান বাহিনীর প্রশিখন বিমান ছাড়া কোম বিমান এখানে অবতরন করেনা।বছরে দুই দিন এখানে কুচকাওয়াজ হয়,২৬ শে মারচ ১৬ই ডিসেম্বর। ১৯৭২সালে বঙ্গ বন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের স্বদেশ প্রতাবরতন এর ইতিহাস কে ধারণা করে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে পুরাতন বিমান বন্দর। হষরত শাহজালাল আন্তর্জাতিক বিমান বন্দর যাএী পরিবহন শুরু করার আগমুহূর্ত পযন্ত এটি একমাত্র আন্তর্জাতিক বিমান বন্দর ছিল।

তেজগাঁও বিমানবন্দর বাংলাদেশের রাজধানী ঢাকার মিরপুর ও তেজগাও এলাকার মধ্যবর্তী স্থানে অবস্থিত।বর্তমানে তেজগাঁও বিমানবন্দরে উড়োজাহাজ ওঠানামা করে না। এমনকি বিমানবন্দরটি উড়োজাহাজ ওঠানামার উপযোগীও নয়, নেই কোনো অবকাঠামো। মাঝে মধ্যে কিছু হেলিকপ্টার ওঠানামা করে। কিন্তু সরকারিভাবে এটি এখনও বিমানবন্দর।১৯৮১ সালে হজরত শাহজালাল আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দর চালু হওয়ার আগ পর্যন্ত এটি দেশের প্রধান বিমানবন্দর হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়ে আসছিল।

Our history is linked with this airport. It’s Bangladesh's first Int Airport. Our father of nation Bangabandhu landed here in the free Bangladesh in 10th Jan 1972. Many old & historic memories are here in this airport. Now this one is used as a full military air base for our army & air force.
