Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) is a good quality international education provider in Shanghai with relatively affordable tuition fee. It was in 2012 when my family and I about to move to Shanghai. The first thing I looked for before moving was an international school for my kid which offers a good quality education and relatively affordable tuition fees of junior high school (grade 7). I went to the internet to see international schools establishment in Shanghai to learn parents' and former students' comments and their advises about the schools. You might bet that around 85%~90% of their comments generally true and can be trusted. You might want to see the school's quality from the way and how quick and how accurate they respond to your inquiries. I posted around 6-7 inquiries to 6-7 different schools. Of all inquiries that I posted through email, the WISS was the first and the quickest school to answer my inquiries. The others needed two or three days to respond or even did not respond at all. The WISS needed only 2-3 hours to respond. The follow-up inquiries from me were also quickly responded. It was a satisfying experience with this school. It is worth noting that in Shanghai there are many international schools (IGCSE or IB) with truly international curriculum as well as "international schools" that more like bilingual schools which does not reflect the real international school in its curriculum, facilities, teachers, students, etc. Yes "international schools" cost you around half of the average cost of real international schools. On the internet you might easily find comments of parents, students or ex students of the schools. Mostly they speak the truth. My small research concluded that generally speaking, British International School of Shanghai (BISS) was the most expensive international school. Some parents wrote BISS's tuition fee was over-price. Shanghai American Schools (SAS) came the second in terms of expensiveness of the tuition fee, and WISS came the third. While Shanghai Singapore International School (SSIS), Shanghai Community International School (SCIS) as well as Yue Chung International School (YCIS) might come at par with WISS tuition fees or a little higher, but some parents talked to me that there are some other fees that eventually the cost are much higher. I saw a YCIS campus at Hongqiao area around Hongqiao Rd. - Shuiceng Rd., which campus was easily accessible, just in the city centre. It was not a big campus in terms of campus building. A SCIS campus in Hongqiao Road (not far from Yili Road / Yili Garden, the campus of which was not big too. I chose WISS because I was impressed by its responsiveness to my inquiries, and first good impression when I took a virtual visit to the WISS campus. The other thing, my kid was accepted in this great school after reviewing the previous report book, test, etc. Besides doing virtual visit, I also did field visit to the school to see the physical appearance of the school's building. After visiting this school and listening to my Chinese friend, I was confident that WISS was the best choice. WISS is an IB school. It is big school, with big yard, equipped with supporting physical infrastructures such as athletic field, swimming pool, theatre, canteen, workshop, labs physics, biology, chemistry, parking space, etc. To me, WISS is a reputed IB school with a good environment, relatively no bullying, equal opportunity for students to develop, qualified teachers, equipped with art workshop too, such as laser cutting technology for handicraft making, ceramics furnace, etc. Your kid's talent in music, animation, drama, etc. are also possibly well developed. There were also many extra-curricular programs to joint, such as social internship, teaching English for local students by WISS students, helping others, cross-cultural program, etc. The WISS is located in Qingpu District, outskirt of Shanghai, needs 30-40 minutes by car via elevated highway or via Shanghai Metro Line 2, but needs further 4-5 km taxi ride. Highly recommendable.
