"A decent place to walk around during the week"
"Zoos are usually a great place to go as a family to see animals from all over the world (which would be almost impossible to see had there not been zoos)"
"I say it's a perfect zoo to visit"
"Good well organized place"
"It was a great visit, with a wide array of fascinating animals to see"
A decent place to walk around during the week. Limited species with just 1 or 2 each cage. The animal looks sad and tired. The zoo should take care better for the animal, their living condition is poor ( we saw a male lion shriveling and vomit yellow liquid, couldn't see any water supply in their cage), the elephant has no friend, etc which kinda heart breaking when seeing them suffered under the melting sun. 40mns is enough to check out the whole zoo. As the zoo just newly open a pool for kids so they should better control those monkeys wandering around the area. Above is my own personal opinion. In general, the place is good but if they any animals are healthy and happy, it'd be better . Considerable recommended.

Zoos are usually a great place to go as a family to see animals from all over the world (which would be almost impossible to see had there not been zoos). The Shou Shan Zoo must have been exactly that in its heyday, but unfortunately the evidence of lack of maintenance of the grounds and enclosures makes it less so today. While not a complete disaster of a trip, I would recommend visiting after spring or before autumn (not mid summer or in winter) and as early in the day as possible. It is a long walk around the grounds so wear comfy shoes and take extra drinks with. Tip: parking can be an issue, especially on public holidays, so get there early.
I say it's a perfect zoo to visit. It has various collections but still manages to keep the area not too big. You can finish and enjoy the whole trip in about 2hrs. For bigger birds like peafowl (peacock?) or swans, they prepare a dedicated enclosed park and let visitors to come and interact with them closely. The mountains goats are also left roaming free that you can touch the horn by your hands!!! And pet them, ofc. The location is also close with other tourism spots like Pier 2 Art Center and Sizihwan. It's nice to go to the zoo after lunch then continue to those places after.
Good well organized place. The ape and monkey section is very special they have apes from all around the world. Another interesting section is the bird section. Anyone should visit it to get an exotic experience. As a tourist I reccomond anyone to visit this place to get a good insight about Taiwans natural resources. However I felt like majority of animals are imported from other nations. One drawback is lack of transportation facilities to this region.

It was a great visit, with a wide array of fascinating animals to see. The site is truly a haven for tourists seeking to explore and learn about Taiwan's wildlife. However, it's important to be aware of the presence of wild monkeys in the area. These mischievous creatures are known to snatch food, particularly from children. I would recommend taking precautions by hiding your food before entering the zoo to avoid any unwanted encounters with the monkeys.

Good thing to know: you don’t need to pay at the ticket booth if you have an Ipass. I noticed it after I bought the ticket. The ticket is 40 ntd which I think is a good price for a ticket compared to the zoos in Europe. Really liked this visit to the zoo. Be careful of the formosan monkeys, they can appear and steal your food. For the people that are searching for stamps: You can stamp at the entrance, where you go inside.

Had mixed reviews about this place but decided to go anyway and have a wander with my wife. We got there by bus and walked up to the entry where you will see a few wild monkeys on your way. Be warned they are not the friendly type. The zoo is quite modern and nice layout, its easy to walk around and you will get to see a few animals. Although a few of them don’t look that great shape it was still an enjoyable walk.

Best value for money zoo I've ever been to with an admission fee of NTD40. It may not be as large as Taipei zoo however it still has a good variety of animals with plenty of space to walk around (also a great place to bring kids). There are wild monkeys roaming around the area but they are harmless so long as you don't feed or provoke them. The surrounding Shou Shan area is also a nice hiking spot if you're looking for other things to do.
I had a wonderful experience in the Kaohsiung City Shou Shan Zoo. It was a sunny day, ZOO entrance fee is extremely low (was 20 NT for a student), there are a lot of animals, ponds to cool down, restaurant and much more. For a European visitor, it is kind of a unique experience as the jungle itself, is located in the jungle, so the setting looks and is completely natural.
The animals are very rare or endangered... They are in very pathetic conditions or diseased animals what I felt. Some animals don't have one eye, some animals have their fingers twisted. Though I know the animals feel all alone in the cages all the time but the staff should keep them feel friendly, may be they are keeping.

Very poorly maintained zoo and it must be making people sad to see those animals kept in bad condition in such hot humid weather. Also lot of uphill slopes walk which is hard to cover in hot weather. And after lot of herd work when you want to rest, cafe is so small there was 1 hour wait so we just left without eating.

You must buy the ticket in advance!! You can buy it at the convenience store. The zoo is not big and not many animals. You can finish walking in the zoo within half a day. The parking fee during the weekend is counted hourly. You can pay the parking fee using either Line pay or cash.

Not very big but good place to spend 1.5-2 hours. There are pools for kids so you can bring your kids and they enjoy it. Entrence money is 40 TWD for per person but if you wear like animal of month(just like November is Zebra month and if you wear black and white clothes) you can enter to zoo without pay entrance money
This Zoo contains more than 100 species of rare and wonderful animals from all over the world. In addition, shaded pathways lead to a number of quaint temples and shrines hidden amidst the forests that cover the slopes. The nighttime view of Kaohsiung from the top of Shoushan is another special treat.
One of the nicest zoos in Taiwan, second to the Taipei Zoo. Most amenities are catered to kids so they'll never get bored. The atmosphere is great and the animals look healthy. The apes are quite lively so watch out for them or they might snatch your snacks. lol
I had a nice experience here last Sunday. It's for a group of Family and ofcourse it's for the kids :) Staff's here were very nice, you can eat there, you can bring foods. It's a Friendly place.. I recommend it to the parents who has kids :))
Worth 40nt for sure. As others mentioned: 1. You must book at least a day in advance 2. Parking lot is a good walk away from the zoo. 3. Closing time is 5pm but by 4:30 many animals were already put away. Plan to see everything before 4pm
This zoo is decent but not the best. The animals don’t really have enough room in their enclosures, plus some of the animals look a little lonely. However the creatures were cute and there was also a petting section inside the zoo.
Quite a clean and spacious zoo. Animals were a bit lonely. Not much crowds. Too bad, no animals show so kids might find it a bit boring there. The monkeys outside the entrance gate are very aggressive. Take note.
More facilities have been added and upgraded since last time I was here. The zoo is medium size and great for families. Love Kaohsiung Zoo. Be aware of those native monkeys. They can steal your food and beverage.
The small zoo is perfect for a leisurely stroll, and the underground viewing areas provide a captivating experience. The overall landscape design is excellent.

It is rather depressing. The animals look ok, but not in top condition. The bird aviaries are not nice. It is cheap to enter

The black bear is lazy, like the sloth... Sleeping.... African elephant is the friendly one. Capybara likes the red warm light. Alpaca just eats non-stop
