“It was another sad day in Alberta!” No meds and not a proper response at the Children’s Hospital! We arrived at the Alberta Children’s Hospital at 11:00am Sunday November 28th, 2022 My son’s symptoms: Diarrhea, Vomiting, dehydration, Mucus, Fever, Pale skin, Rash on his stomach, Weakness Fatigue, and Stomach Pains. I arrived at the children’s hospital this morning after 2 straight weeks of struggles with my 6 year boy. The previous family doctor prescribed antibiotics and prednisone and it did not help my son because he continued to be sick everyday, this is why I chose to go for option #2 to take him to emergency for a check up, I usually refuse to go to hospitals unless it’s a REAL emergency it has probably been 3 years since the last time I had my son’s heart checked at this same hospital. Today I experienced the worst of the worst service in health care in the Alberta’s Children’s Hospital, my wait time was around 6 hours. The hospitals website was not up to date with false information on wait hours, triage checked him in and took all the information and details of all the symptoms they gave him a urine test which I have no idea of my son’s results, My son was coughing non stop with vomiting and stomach pains, we finally got called in by a Doctor and we walked into the bed area and she barely checked him out she did the same check up as the triage station only to check his oxygen levels and she re-checked his lungs with a stethoscope, my son was vomiting and she did not even offer him a container to vomit, he had to vomit in his mask that he had on. The Doctor than told me that she could not help me with anything that I had to wait until the virus cleared up that she was not able to provide me with medication, I refused to leave until someone else stepped in, the Doctor did not handle the situation very well therefore she called a Social Worker. I am very concerned about the lack of professionalism and caring support, in this particular Doctor and how she handled the situation versus the Social Worker who was more supportive towards the situation, as a concerned mother I asked for more tests to be done and for fever medication, another nurse stepped in and she did a nose swab test for my son and provided me with 2 medical Pipettes with a little bit of Advil inside. No medicine was prescribed and was told to give him adult medication, no further tests were administer for my son.

I’m gonna say my history. I see here comments about parking, time-wasting, facilities, incompetence and racism. I hope it helps other people. I have been there with my boy having a hard pain in his low abdomen right side, at the end it's been appendicitis and they had to do surgery intervention to remove it. THE PARKING: we paid about 15$ for 24 hours, doesn't seem too bad if you compare it with downtown parking. I think the rates are the same in all Alberta hospitals. Once we arrived the admission lady realized his pain and immediately sent us to a private room to wait and the nurses attended to him while we waited for the doctor. WAITING TIME: of course long but I guess it is a rule in Canada, so nothing new. FACILITIES: Excellent. Everything is super well equipped and kept. ATTENTION: That's the main reason why I give 5 stars to the hospital; every single person who it's been in contact with us (at least 15 persons) it's been super friendly and empathic with my boy’s pain: doctors, nurses, assistants, security, reception. We have absolutely no complaints. The doctor who did the surgery it's been an amazing lady, she came at least 3 times to speak with us to explain everything, to make sure we were ok and helped us to stay calm and confident with the procedure. We didn't feel any kind of racism, the team who works in the hospital is super multicultural so no chance for that kind of thing. May be better to improve the waiting times but for the rest, our whole experience during this hard time it's been really good. Thank you so much to everyone in the hospital.

This is no reflection on the doctors and nurses. This is absolutely directed toward the management of this hospital. This business you are running IS NOT WORKING! I was in the emergency room waiting for care for 8 hours. I was in the hospital for almost 12 hours yesterday. Then to make matters worse I had to come back today because the department to do the testing for my child was closed by the time I got seen. The terrible thing is I am not an anomaly. Almost everyone in the waiting room had been then 8 to 10 hours and some even more. People were taking thier sick children and LEAVING! There just seemed to be no hope to be seen. What's even worse is these nurses and doctors, who are often getting ripped new ones by these worried and scared parents, took this job to help people are at the mercy of a new system and bad hospital management. I dont know how they are all holding up, but hearing how parents (who don't understand thier situation) are taking to them (as if it is there fault) is so sad. Dear management, you should be down here apologizing for your lack of or ability to organized a smooth working system and environment. Having a new system is one thing. Not having enough nurses and doctors is another thing. They are saving lives while you sit back and wonder how you can make more money. Come to the trenches and find out how they are being treated because of your choice in business practice.

I am new to Canada and I went to Calgary Children Hospital with my kid to have MRI , I would rate the service after entering the hospital with 5 stars , The decoration is very touching and every corner has a story. The staff are friendly and everything was organized and we did not spent a lot of time till the service was provided. We end our visit with cup of coffee from good earth Coffeehouse which it was super super good. On the other hand, I will rate the services before we enter the hospital with Zero star .we cannot accept that in a country such as Canada it will take from 3 weeks or more to get an medical appointment !!! do not give any excuse you should solve this immediately. In addition to that I cannot think of a reason that make the parking not free in a hospital / emergency area!!! You should think of this gain and ask your self , if u r parents and bring your kid to emergency , parking will be the last think you want to think about … so if the hospital afraid from people misusing the free parking you can do a validation process from the info desk, once the car owner confirmed that he/she has appointment or admitted to emergency then the parking fees will be waived (you can give a time limitation ) …

My husband and I rushed our son to the hospital last week cos he had a seizure. It was at midnight and they had just one doctor attending to so many people before us so we had to wait for about 7hrs. We were attended to in-between by nurses but the last nurse who came to us started asking some questions that we had already answered over and over again but before she started, she looked at both my husband and I and asked “which one of u can communicate with me better?” We didn’t understand what that meant so my husband asked “what do you mean?” And she said “I need to ask a few questions to whichever one of you can communicate with me better in English” I couldn’t speak out of shock, my husband just walked out of the room cos he didn’t want to get upset, she asked the questions again before I could bring myself to answer her. This was after 6hours of waiting for a doctor. Shortly after, a doctor came in, we were attended to and we left there. The other nurses were sweet but I was disgusted by that nurse thinking we used to live in trees and caves and only spoke gugugaga before coming to Canada.

My daughter went in for a tonsillectomy. It's a common procedure and they took care of some other things. We stayed overnight and went home. Soon it was apparent that the swelling was too much. I took her back to the er and she was being treated by one of the surgeon's team. They had her back in a bed in 25 minutes. We ended up staying 2 more days. I slept in a remarkably comfortable seat for a total of 3 days. The staff..From the cleaners to the nurses and the surgeon's was amazing. The nurses were especially amazing. They were on it. Well informed and kind..every single one! I haven't seen so much kindness and love . I live in the States. There are stories on the news about how the socialized medical system in Canada is a failure. It isn't. What I saw was definitely a different system that is as effective and way more people based than we have in the States. My thanks to the entire staff and the administration of the hospital. You are doing an amazing job for Alberta. Special thanks to Dr Olivia. She was a great with my daughter and took the time to make sure that she recovered quickly.

We just spent a few days in the hospital with our little 3 year old son. Since the minute we were welcomed to the ER until the moment we stepped out we got nothing but an amazing treatment. Every single nurse, doctor, resident, student, cleaner, desk clerk, etc. Was helpful, caring, and dedicated. They made us feel cared for and understood. They treated my son which such love and patience. My son really enjoyed the meals. The teams in the ER and Unit 4 were beyond incredible. The communication and attention were awesome. It is just so wonderful to see how are son was in really good hands and we had nothing to worry about with these specialists. I truly believe they don't get enough credit . We are so grateful with all of them. And proud to have these amazing and prepared specialists in our province.

Worst service ,they make sick children and their parents by letting them wait in the waiting area for hours . Everybody pay taxes to get good services from their government not this kind of treatment they get from Health services. There’s lots of innovation in the world why our health services are not improving even the registries have text message service why can’t AHS ER don’t have it . They waste money by hiring more staff to manage patients why can’t they improve their way of working and by suggestions from public. People wait here like 10-15hrs.This is the worst health system we have. Please do something to resolve these long waiting hours at least people can rest at their place to avoid getting the situation worsen. Thank you

(never used the emergency room, following review doesn't apply to the emergency department) Alberta Children's Hospital is the best for what you need for your kids most - "Best possible Care". Their culture of treating your baby as a baby not just another patient is visible at any department you go to. Hospitality is well located, bus stops nearby, a bit expensive parking, all facilities have the accessibility option. All areas are extremely neat & clean. The best NICU (staff, accommodation, Doctors) I have seen or heard of. Only one bad thing -downstairs cafe Mountainview is very expensive on top of the bad taste of the food. Compared to the other children's hospitals in North America, ACH is not too far off.

After a nightmare month of throat pain and infections, and being sent home from Foothills ER (after being sent there by our family doc) with more antibiotics because 'that's not a tonsil abscess' - we ended up in Urgent Care the next day (close to wedge we live)- & they immediately consulted with ACH. My daughter was transferred by ambulance, and the quality of care there was great. Everyone from front staff, to the docs and nurses were extremely caring and engaged. They did the tests they needed to do, confirmed it was an abscess and treated it promptly. ACH isn't just for little kids...they treated my over 17 teen with empathy and kindness and I appreciated every moment.

My daughter has been going to the Alberta Children's Hospital since she was a month old. She was diagnosed with failure to thrive, (being born a premature baby)She ended up having seizures and back in the hospital. She has been seen by Neurologist. Weight management and the Dental team there. And every team that has worked with my daughter has been wonderful. We work as a team together so that she has the best care possible. I highly recommend and support the staff members here. They come in and take care of our children, us parents, to the best of their ability. Thanks You for all that you do, for the love you give to the patients who you care for and their families.

Ugly My son and I had to wait from 11am to 4pm on 1st March 2023 before getting called in. The Canadian medical system is broken to the core and I hope someone somewhere is striving to fix it. 0 stars. Bad While we were thoroughly enjoying our 5 hour wait, I was reprimanded by a staff from admitting that I was being too loud on the phone. I felt bad and said sorry but learnt from my son later that I wasn't loud. Looks like she was just being unfair to me. The nurse did a bad job with the poke for blood culture. Good The doctor listened carefully, understood the issue and followed up with diagnostic imaging and blood work. 5 stars.

  • Michael Beresford

We got amazing care here, when we got care. Thanks to all the staff for the appendix removal of our 5YO. However, we almost left before getting treatment. We had to wait a VERY long time (close to 7 hours) before seeing a doctor with little to no updates from the nurse that we first saw. The other nurse seemed to be more helpful then the first. I think more can be done to at least update parents of the status of seeing a doctor. It's a hard wait when you have a kid in pain and asking when the doctor is coming. We got transferred from another hospital with high likelihood of appendix issues, but still had to wait a LONG time.

  • Filip Čiček

Yes, you'll wait in ER but only if you're not an emergency, that's what initial intake and triage is for. We waited for 6 hours today but that also means that someone else's kid got an immidiate care they needed. The doctors and nurses are phenomenal and I truly appreciate everything they're doing for our children. All those complaining about wait times should count their blessings. It's not like the staff is sitting around chatting. They're working their butts off and I'm happy I get to live at a place where my kid can get that kind of care. Thank you!

Every Doctor, nurse or specialist we’ve encountered here has been amazing. When it comes to breathing and oxygen levels they don’t mess around. My daughter has been diagnosed with Viral induced asthma and we were in the hospital for 5 days. They would not send us home until they were comfortable with her oxygen levels over night. They were thorough with the diagnosis and made sure we knew what we needed to do for her when we left. I’m so grateful to live somewhere where we have this place of resource for kids.

  • Lily Riwukore

I will give 5 stars for the service that they have done for my son. The doctor was good at doing a physical examination; very detailed, and no rush at all. He was able to find out what was wrong with my son. The triage and ER nurses were friendly and very accommodating; they even offered some free food while waiting for the doctor. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about the long waiting; it is not the doctor's or nurses' fault; it is the system. So thank you again for your service !!

After a 30minute wait for EMS to arrive at our home in Mackenzie, we're dropped off. The photo is of my son with autism, sleeping in the ER room for 10 hours in a $10 chairThe crazy amount of money on art. Seriously it’s kids. They should have set little nooks and tvs and stuff. Nope. There is a fish tank and a vending machine with candy, but no TV or bean bags chairs, calming sensory items etc. Kids coughing all over each other because they are running around with nothing to do.

It was 1h our 16 minutes waiting time and my son admitted in at around 11am. However not a turn till 2:54 pm. The posted waiting time is already over and man patients who were behind my son were called but not call to us. I understand the serious patients would be seen first but all patients back of us were obviously not serious, I believe. Wanted to know the reason and the people before us but a nurse advised to come through line again. Why such a big hospital has so poor service?

  • Mr. DeSilva

Words cannot express my gratitude towards the incredible nurses at AB childrens hospital . My child was diagnosed with whopping cough and needed hospitalization for treatment, and the care we received was simply outstanding The nurses were not only highly skilled and knowledgeable, but also incredibly compassionate and kind. They went above and beyond to make sure my child was comfortable, reassured, and received the best possible care

  • Lisa Gina Cole

I had such great experiences at this hospital! I have had to go a couple times for different reasons with different children and have always encountered helpful, friendly staff, nurses and doctors. Parking is easy and not too expensive. They take the time to explain the situation and at every step make sure that the child is comfortable and understands the procedure. Makes a stressful situation so much more manageable.

  • Natalie Wood-Cordelle

We came here recently with our 6 month old daughter and we’re pleasantly surprised by the care and compassion from the nurses and doctors compared to our previous visit to an urgent care centre. The wait wasn’t too terribly long; two hours approximately and that was after the nurse said there were 20 kids ahead of us. We live in the Deep South so driving here was a bit of a journey but we will come again if we need to.

This Saturday my son and daughter become too sick due to skin allergies we took our children to hospital. We thank to entire staff and administrators of the hospital, you are doing amazing job in Alberta. Especially thanks to Dr micheal pierse,he was a great with my son and daughter and took the time to make sure they will recover quickly and briefly explain the disease.

  • Asad Raza

My son was admitted for few days in children hospital. We have received exceptional services,. doctors and nurses were great and they took very good care of my son. Communication about my son’s health was very clear , frequent, professional and helpful. My prayers and best wishes are for all the hospital staff.

  • Qasim Ali Qasimi

Frustrated beyond words. A visit to check up a pimple on my son’s skin took over nine hours. One of the nurses slammed the door on me when I told her I had waited for seven hours. I guess this is the service I deserve for paying over $30k in annual taxes. I would give a 0 if it was an option.

  • john tewelde eritrean

we went to the hospital recently, My daughter broke her arm. the nurses and the doctors were absolutely amazing. especially DR Phillips. thank you. the nurses at unit one were also caring and patient. so many arts and play areas. five star for you.

  • Lynda Bailey

no administration in this hospital when they are tired of looking after your child they will talk you in to letting them die.and there social worker would not know a good mother from a bad one she is terrible!!will never support this hospital again

  • Renee Marie

Great hospital. Suggestion Music in waiting rooms. Waiting on my son in day surgery wait room.. so quiet in here it's a bit irritating. Also I can hear EVERYTHING about other patients when Dr's discuss things in the wait room.

  • Boluwatife Adisa-Simon

Unless super necessary, refrain from bringing your child here if your family doctor is able to help instead. The wait time is ridiculously long and you could easily be waiting for more than 8hours. Happened to me twice.

  • Jojo Ab

It really depends on your luck in this hospital... sometimes nurses will be super polite and professional and other times they will be unhuman.. doctors too seems like some doctors are more knowlageable than other...

  • Christine Moon

Everyone from the greeter at the door, nurses, xray tech and the Doctor were extremely friendly, helpful and absolutely wonderful with our granddaughter. We arrived just before 1130am and were done within 3 hours.

  • Michael Jennings

  • Dianne Bergevin

7 hour wait with 4 year old child with abdominal pain, sugar in urine and fever. No treatment, except popsicles. Mom told to get bloodwork later. Terrible.

  • David Seney

My son had a very long procedure done in endocrinology, and the nurses there were awesome! They gave my son $15 Apple card for good behavior …
