After several years as a member of Alex Fitness Gym, I decided to explore the possibility of hiring a personal trainer for the first time. I selected a few potential candidates featured on the gym website and, before scheduling an in-person consultation, contacted them via email to inquire about their certifications, certification acquisition dates, tenure at the gym, prior work experience, pricing, and availability. Given my limited knowledge of the Certified Personal Trainers' fitness domain, I began gathering information from their responses. To my surprise, this process uncovered a questionable validity in the qualification presented by one of the gym's acclaimed “Certified" Personal Trainers, a situation that Alex Fitness gym unprofessionally established and continues to endorse. Understandably, legitimate organizations meticulously adhere to stringent standards to uphold the credibility and authenticity of their certifications. This involves implementing rigorous examination protocols, including the incorporation of proctored exams or robust online monitoring systems designed to forestall any potential breaches of integrity. Furthermore, these evaluations often encompass time constraints and a diverse array of question formats, ensuring a comprehensive appraisal of the candidate's proficiency and grasp of the subject matter. Conversely, an organization purporting to be reputable yet relying solely on online assessments lacking proctoring or time constraints and predominantly featuring simplistic true or false questions inevitably casts doubt on the legitimacy and validity of the certification process. Regrettably, this appears to be the prevailing issue surrounding the International Fitness ASSOCIATION (I.F.A.), the certification body from which the concerning trainer acquired his credentials. (NOT to be confused with another existing I.F.A., the International Fitness ACADEMY, which is totally legit). The disconcerting aspect remains how a well-regarded establishment like Alex Fitness Gym can wholeheartedly lend its unequivocal endorsement to an individual whose professional proficiency rests upon the fragile foundation of an expediently acquired and potentially dubious certification. It is crucial to conduct comprehensive research in advance to ensure that the trainers' expertise and credentials align with the industry's prevailing standards, particularly considering the significant fees they charge for their services.
I was on a business trip in SF and was looking for a gym in the area where I stayed. (Castro). There are several gyms around but Alex fitness was, hands down, best for my needs. It’s not a big gym by any means, however I have never seen it crowded even during peak times. (AM or PM), so you never wait for machine or bench to be freed. It is extremely well equipped, much better than regular big name gyms. It has free weights, dumbbells, kettlebells, Olympic and other bars, cardio zone, stretch zone, TRX, hey even massage table… I can go on and on - it has it all. You name it. Seriously, I wish gyms Im going to had half of the equipment of Alex fitness. Regulars are super nice, and welcoming. There is large choice of personal trainers available for private training as well. Showers, towels are available and lockers with keys or if you’d like you can bring and use your padlock. It is also very clean, I’ve seen staff cleaning it regularly. Long story short - there is so much love and attention invested in this gym, I have rarely seen it before. And I’ve been regular to gyms for over 30 years. I recommend this gym without any reserve or hesitation. Bravo the owners - this is the way!
I'm somewhat reluctant to write a review, because I don't want Alex to start getting crowded, but I thought I would add some things other reviewers did not mention. The women's locker room is essentially a changing room. It's quite small and realistically only one person can change in there at a time. I workout after work, so I don't mind the lack of showers, but this can be a deal breaker for some. To get the lowest membership price you need to pay a full year's worth up front (which is what I do). I'm not sure how the other Alex's membership plans stack up against other nearby gyms in terms of affordability. But paying upfront is worth it to me, because I actually get to use the equipment versus waiting in a queue for what feels like days at other gyms. I've been going to Alex consistently for 2.5 years, and overall I'm pretty happy with it. It's clean, I rarely have to wait for equipment, and the people are really nice.
I’ve worked out at Alex Fitness for over 2 years and found it to be one of the best gyms in the area. - It’s always kept clean. The staff uses cleaners on all equipment - Never has to wait to use equipment. Has steady business but never crowded in a bad way - Staff are all friendly and I often chit-chatted with them. - Monthly rates are very reasonable compared to other gyms in the area. All around great gym. Give it a try and you’ll be glad.
I love Alex! Been a member for the past 4 years, and I’ll never go anywhere else. It’s medium sized so doesn’t attract a ton of people, it’s incredibly clean, bright and comfortable. Has all the equipment you need, and they add new machines regularly. And Olga and Brie are gems!
Love this gym !! I’m hesitant to speak too highly as it is never crowded when I visit and would hate to see that change. It has a wide selection of machines with never a wait to use. All of the staff are very friendly. It is always spotlessly clean.
Very clean and well setup equipment. I highly recommend. It has a very relaxed vibe so you can concentrate on your workout. And after your workout you're feeling hungry so I recommend Sushi Time downstairs!
My favorite gym to do some deadlifts when I’m visiting San Francisco! I usually use ClassPass to get access to the open gym. well-stocked with weights and equipment, and friendly vibes!
solid gym, like that its not an overwhelmingly huge space. no frills but has what you need. i do have to wait for a certain weight or a bench at times but its not super crowded
Great place to work out , has everything you need. Great customer service
