The twisting limbs of the Treaty Oak, the oldest living thing around northern Florida, sprawls immodestly out, each branch beckoning to tell its history, but instead baking lazily in the heat as the world speeds by it.  Some estimate it to be 300 years old - older than the city of Jacksonville, older than Prudential as it began a good distance away in Newark in the 1870s, but not, of course, older than human greed. Prudential appears to hide the greediest of its elements within walking distance of the celebrated landmark.  Today, one is more likely to get a call from Prudential's claims wrecking crew here, from Two Prudential Plaza, than they are to ever pay it a visit. These representatives are not among the same that follow Prudential's normal rules and procedures.  This is a separate group with the express purpose of obfuscating and, ultimately, stopping the claims process after the claimant, in their grief, has been assured that everything will be alright and while they still have in mind that Prudential is a sound company that will follow through on its obligations.  These representatives are tasked with finding flaws with documents, with claims, if not to simply make up problems out of thin air.  One (real) representative will calmly tell you that you don't need to send anything else in, while these reps will frantically tell you to ignore everything the previous rep has said, that your pending death certificates are not acceptable, that the certificates are not official, that they have to say that one of your loved ones had to have preceded another in death, that the scans you have painstakingly made are blurry and illegible, so on and so forth.  They call folks at work who don't have time to talk and talk over them.  Their goal is to frustrate you, to make you decide you don't need the hassle of following paperwork up with more paperwork, and to stretch the process hopelessly out so that elderly spouses who are prone to die within weeks of one another do so without Prudential ever paying out.  The representatives do so with aplomb, as though there are ghoulish incentives to throw picayune details back in the faces of grieving families. In the fine print of the instructions to file claims on policies, one is asked to send scanned documents to the ILIclaims email.  According to a manager I spoke with in Jacksonville, Miracel, reps are not actually given access to these emails in an inbox.  Rather, they are sent to another department off-site where attachments (or, at least, some of them) are disseminated.  Miracel suggested that I send another email in to the same address with all the attachments again.  I asked her why she would expect for me to get a different result doing exactly the same thing the same way a second time.  I asked her why she couldn't call the other department.  She said the other department didn't have a phone.  I asked if there is another email to send to, like maybe her own.  She answered there is only one email address.  I pointed out that within the space of two hours, Prudential had completely changed what I was asked to send in and why I was asked for it.  She apologized and offered to send more paperwork out that I had already filled out.  These are collection agency-like tactics that Prudential is using on grieving families. I sincerely hope the Jacksonville Claims Wrecking Crew is saving Prudential enough money in unpaid claims to justify the damage being done to Prudential's reputation.  There is little moral justification for the constant series of tricks run against the people Prudential has promised policyholders to care for.  I'm sure the tendrils of the three-century-old oak has stretched towards more blatant instances of humans mistreating one another, but, perhaps, it has never been in such close proximity to one more methodically ruthless.

Worst company ever. My sister has been getting the run around for a month. She has been trying to collect on a death benefit policy from her late husband. They have lied to her and gone so far as to tell her the check is in the mail. Well no check has shown up. They keep her on hold for over a half hour from some other country.
