The signs highlighting Andrew Jackson’s accomplishments directly across from where people he enslaved would have slept was in horrendously poor taste, and shows that the Hermitage cares more about preserving a positive legacy of Andrew Jackson than acknowledging the people whose humanity he dangled in front of them like a prize. The presidential museum has enough about his accomplishments, and seeing a sign calling Jackson a hero in a cabin he miraculously downsized to make smaller for the people who were forced to stand on their feet for 18+ hours in Tennessee heat. Incredibly disappointing. Another thing that really rubbed me the wrong way about The Hermitage was the fact that I saw the Cherokee referred to as “Indians” too much for my liking. Really? It’s 2023, and these exhibits looked like they were at least installed in the past 10 years. Indigenous, Cherokee, or even Native American would have been more appropriate for an educational museum. The Hermitage is a classic example of Americans being unable to just acknowledge the horrors of history, without some sort of buffer to make us all feel more comfortable. I understand there are tours speaking to the experience of people who were enslaved. I went to the museum, and appreciated the banners providing names and faces of the people who were forced to work there. But I question where your true intentions lie when I see signs calling him a hero directly across from where enslaved people slept. Do better, remove these signs.

Great tour and beautiful property. Recently did the Belle Meade Plantation tour as well and this one was just as great. I didn't buy tickets in advance because they did not seem to be selling out online. I visited with my mother-in-law and she received a senior discount and I a veteran discount ($24 each). The property is quite large. It takes about 7-8 minutes to walk to the mansion through the museum. You can head back and see the film if you don't get to it before your tour. I highly recommend watching the 17 minute film, it was excellent. If deciding between this tour and Belle Meade, biggest differences are this one is more walking and more focused more on a person, better history guides. Belle Meade includes wine tasting for free ($3 here) at the end and is more focused on slavery. We spent about 2.5 hours here. I could have spent more time but had lunch reservations. I would say budget 2 hours minimum. They will have audio headsets in the future which will be so much better. For now, you can listen to the stops online. Learned so much about this amazing person and property! I would personally choose this over Bellmeade just because I like walking but Belle Meade is closer to Nashville and takes less time if you have mobility issues and time constraints.

The Mansion Tour was nice. They showed a short 25-minute movie about this place and the people who had lived there. The mansion was air-conditioned, which was good because of the extremely hot summer weather that week. The four tour guides were nice and friendly and they gave our tour a lot of interesting knowledge about Andrew Jackson and his life before and after his presidency. They even politely answered our questions. And we asked them a few. It was my first time visiting here. I bought some nice souvenirs. Those ladies who worked in the gift shop were nice, friendly, and helpful. We got a ride from an older gentleman in a golf cart from the Mansion back to the Museum and gift shop. He told my husband that he could drive for him. I thought he was teasing; but he was serious. My husband talked to him and we thanked him profusely for the ride. We were tired of walking, and it was so hot out that we really appreciated that ride. The other people, like us, were hot and tired, and I'm sure they also appreciated that ride as well. I would take our children and grandchildren back here to learn some of our nation's history.

The film shown addressed Jackson’s duality in saying he set precedent for a government that takes power from the aristocracy and gives it to the common man but that he had a violent side and we must remember his policies to steal native lands and uphold slavery. The whole of the tour, from signage to tour guide scripts, didn’t glorify or vilify Jackson, it stated all the facts (like I wish the news outlets would). We’ve visited Mt. Vernon and Reagan’s Library and we found Jackson’s mansion well-preserved, thanks to the efforts of the organization that collects the funds for this site, and the tours well-done. The size of the group was a bit large for the size of the rooms. I loved the museum store! It had fun items for history buffs, candy, Tennessee knickknacks, cookbooks, a few clothing items, tea ware, toys and Christmas ornaments. There is a new-ish wine-tasting venue next door to the store. On this day (Saturday, 5:00 pm) the restaurant was closed.

As an european visiting a southern state and interested to learn more about slavery this was everything I could have wished for. - the entry museum, with the movie included, offers basic informations to prepare you for the mansion and grounds visit - it is a mansion like the one you see on movies with cotton plantations of the early 19th century - the interior is very well preserved, most of the objects are original, the house is full of history - the estate is quite big but it was a very relaxing and peacefull walk - it has a cotton field, I really appreciates this. - the audio guide is very good, enough information, not to much to get you bored. - I took also the carriege ride focused on slavery and I appreciated the informatikn provided by the guide.

Fun stop for our family! My kids thought it was so cool they got to go into the house of a former president! The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. There was construction going on, so I don’t know if we saw everything we could have. The museum itself was educational, but the movie was not working and it was really warm in the building. The mansion was super cool to see. Definitely recommend seeing the mansion if you go. And we toured the grounds. We contemplated doing the tour “In Their Footsteps” but the $50 cost was too much. I inquired if there was a discount for children like the other admission prices but there was not. Our family would have cost $300! I hope they consider making it more cost friendly for families with children to attend that tour. The garden and family cemetery were beautiful and peaceful.

This home and plantation are well preserved. Tour guides were professional and very knowledgeable. The entire of the home is awesome, especially the mural, and how much is authentic. Well kept grounds and other out buildings. Peaceful area. The museum was excellent and full of great information about Andrew Jackson and had good information on the slaves he owned, too. Some great insights into life during his time and some details of his life. Wish we could have taken photos inside (only reason not giving a 5 star rating). I understand why, with 80% of the items there being Jackson's belongings or from his family and so are very old and to preserve them, they ask for no photos.

As a fan of Andrew Jackson, this was an absolute thrill! I loved walking through history and trying to feel it as though I was there. The two tour guides in the house acted as though they were indentured servants forced to guide us through the house and showed little enthusiasm for their jobs. Amazing historical home! 82% of the interior is original and absolutely gorgeous. The grounds were lovely to walk through and the plaques were very informative. Absolutely beautiful scenery. We did the mansion tour and the grounds access and there was so much to explore. It was really cool to feel you are walking through history and learn about the lives of everyone who lived there. I would recommend about 3 to 4 hours to do everything. We came around 4 and did not have enough time to see everything. I enjoy history and reading everything so it does take me a bit longer to get through everything. If you like just looking at pictures may need a little less time! But definitely give yourself enough time so you do jot have to rush! Would recommend.

We enjoyed touring the Hermitage. My son and I enjoy learning about history together. He is 7 years old. I have visited two times, but my first visit was about 25 years ago on a school field trip. This visit was like new to me. We had a great time. The premium guided tour is worth the price. I 100% recommend going that route. We spent about 3 hours touring the grounds and mansion. There is a lot of walking and standing, so be sure to wear some good shoes.

Nice mansion, museum and grounds to explore for history lovers. Many of Andrew Jackson’s items were on display at the museum, including his eyeglasses, carriage, cane, sword and so much more. The museum is immersive with interactive displays, short films, and artifacts. There is something for everyone. We chose to do the VIP tour. It was great. I really enjoy having a knowledgeable person explain to me what I am looking at. Otherwise, I just blow past everything too quickly. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. I could just spend the day walking outside enjoying the plants, wildlife, and scenery. The house is really well preserved with a lot of the original stuff. It was very impressive. We learned a lot about Jackson. His story is quite impressive. I'm so glad we visited. This is one of the better presidential places we have been.

The Hermatige is a must do with any visit in Nashville. There is so much history in this property and in the story is that the tour guides and the plaques give you is amazing. Everybody is extremely nice the way it has always been with the natives of Tennessee. the mansion tour and walking the grounds is an awesome time. There is a golf cart for those that need assistance because the mansion is approximately 300 yards from the visitor center. Plenty of parking plenty of room for everybody to walk around a great time for all.

I honestly was expecting a little more from this place since it costs $20 per person to even step foot on the grounds! I felt like the grounds were a little run down; trees and garden looked a little sad. A pro is that the grounds do allow dogs so my parents were able to bring their dog as we walked around. Staff was friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were clean and you could use those before paying the $20.

I recommend making the short trip out from Nashville to the Hermitage to review this piece of history. There was so much to see in the museum before even getting to the house. Great tour to learn about some of our American history. The house tour was great and the tour guides did a great job presenting the information. You are able to walk around the property to tour some of the older buildings which has additional historical information. The garden is a must to see after the house tour. We didnt go to the cafe to eat but looked at the food and it looked and smelled great. We didn't have time to visit the winery but they looked like they had a great special of trying 3 wines for $3.

There is a lot of construction for up dates being done. I was able to get around with my scooter. I couldn't go into the house with the scooter, but I was able to walk and sit once inside. I found everything very interesting. I loved the wagon ride with Greg as our tour guide. Very informative (all the tour guides were), friendly, and just kind. It was a great day. Loved the Bake Chicken in the Cafe too!

I came here on a Monday afternoon and was basically the only person in the whole place! I did the “In Their Footsteps” tour and it was super informative, I’d highly recommend it. We did the outside tour only. It was great. It wasn't about the money. The difference in price was four dollars. But we were able to self pace the outside, rather than going at the guide's speed. We saw much of the Hermitage's ground floor through the windows. Highlights for us were the history of enslaved people and the gardens, including the Jackson burial cupola. Plus, we visited the wine tasting area. Very nice.

Beautifully preserved historical site. A fascinating window into the life of Andrew Jackson, the ‘President of the People’. The museum does gloss over the history and experience of the 150 slaves owned by Jackson who also lived on this estate. The interpretation is from the perspective of the Jackson family which is an incomplete history. As such, how the history is presented is as educational as the site itself.

I have lived 15 minutes away from here for 20+ years, yet never been here! Over 1100ac on the Hermitage once lived in by Andrew Jackson and his extended family and workers. Definitely do the carriage ride tour and museum tour! Lots of opportunities for some pics and a great history lesson. It’s so beautiful this time of year!

This National Historic Landmark is a must see if you are in the Nashville area. The centerpiece of the property and museum is Andrew Jackson’s Heritage mansion. The house which began construction in 1819 became the current Greek Revival mansion by 1835. The house, garden and grounds are stunning. It’s a walk through history which you learn about our seventh president and life in the early 1800’s.

This place is horrible and a genuine rip off. My girlfriend's phone was stolen and no one did anything to help. It's over priced and full of lies anyways. What a joke. Go around it avoid it, do not stop it's a horrible place. They have cameras and did nothing to help us.

I did not realize how much I did not know about Andrew Jackson, our 7th president, until I visited Hermitage. We did the mansion tour which included the grounds and museum. The mansion still had 80% of the furnishings that were there at his death in 1845. Fascinating part of American history - both the man and a peeved of what life was like in the early 1800 south.

We learned so much visiting Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage if you’re wondering or not about paying the extra $ to tour the mansion I’d say do it! We spent about 2 1/2 hours here but you can easily spend less or more.

I actually really enjoyed the history and experience here. The docents were great & the preservation is so amazing. The weather was perfect in late October to walk the grounds & see the different locations they've kept as part of the property. Don't skip the garden, cemetery or walking out towards the fields.

Very nice visit. I toured the mansion. All of the tour staff were very knowledgeable. The lead tour director has very extensive knowledge and is very personable. The grounds are very well kept up. The mansion is 80% original. The museum is laid out so you can either go through fast or read every word.

Great place to learn the history of Andrew Jackson. It's one of the few such museums with a ton of original antiques from the house and man. Really cool to be up close and personal with some amazing pieces of history!
