Anjappar Chettinad offers a nice and very original blend of flavors from India. This chain is already quite popular worldwide and as soon as they opened in Utrecht, they became a topic of discussions on social media. I had to go there. I called them on a Sunday afternoon and realized that is is not possible to get a reservation - though the manager mentioned that I drop wait, they might be able to arrange a table. Their location is easily approachable in the center of the city right across the mall. We started with a round of Medu Wada, Paneer 65 and Poricha Kozhi (Anjappar Fried Chicken). It took less than a bite to realize that we made a right decision and it was worth the wait. Wada was very soft and fluffy. Fried chicken had a nice very authentic flavor. It was not as spicy as it seems to be (or you find in restaurants in India) - but had a perfectly balanced taste that everyone would find palatable. In the main course, we ordered a South Indian mean (thaali) that came with several curries, rasam, raita, suji (kesari bath) dessert, papadam and rice. Everything was perfect. We also had a Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani. I'll be honest because I haven't been able to find authentic Hyderabadi Biryani outside Hyderabad (except a takeaway called Hyderabadi Dum Biryani in Milpitas California). Anjappar's Hyderabadi biryani was not really the same taste - but it was certainly something to remember. The best part was - the flavors of spices were perfect but it didn't feel "too spicy". Their drinks (indian mocktails) are also interesting. There was an almond shake and something with chia seeds - both are worth trying. I'm definitely going back to try more items on the menu (it's a pretty long menu). Plus points for the quality of service and the pace of bringing plates and plates of amazing meal. The manager and the owner are amazing people and their personality is reflected in all the operations that lead to the experience you would remember.

Review edit after the third visit: I reduced my previous rating of 5 stars after our third visit. We were there at 4.45 on a Thursday, and as soon as we entered the manager (I assume from all our visits) asked us how he can help us and when we replied that we have a reservation just coldly asked us to wait. He was attending to two other people who were there for takeaways. While it’s okay to ask to wait, it can be said in a nicer manner making eye contact at the least. What I realised during our evening is that the way you are served depends on the person who serves you. Some people were served very nicely with smiles while others not. Two people who came after us were asked to sit right next to us although the entire restaurant was empty at that point with many two person tables. They asked the waiter if they could sit at another table (understandable that it doesn’t make sense to sit cramped next to another couple when the whole restaurant is empty!) and the waiter just said no! And this wasn’t great for us either. Being from India I know that they are not trying to be rude to customers, but I would imagine that the interaction with customers is also important for the whole experience at the restaurant. With regards to food, the Anjappar fried chicken, which we liked very much the first two times, wasn’t as good this time. Although the chicken was crunchy, it didn’t taste of the usual marinade and this time it came with ketchup instead of the usual green chutney. The chicken thali was good and tasted the same, but the mutton Sukka masala wasn’t as tender and flavourful as it usually is. Maybe it’s also the fact that we were there before the usual dinner time that made this visit less enjoyable. Earlier review: Really good South Indian food! We went there twice in the week they opened and enjoyed everything we had. I especially liked the fried chicken starter, the porotta and the chicken thali.

We Visited Anjappar Utrecht with family yesterday. We thought of having a light dinner but after having Mutton Kari Dosai and Kalaki it tempted us to eat more and we have many varieties like Seeraga Samba Briyani which is outstanding and Crab Rasam such a splendid taste and makes us feel more comfortable. Food: Taste is really good compared to other Indian Restaurants. Even I took Dutch people with me and they loved and enjoyed a lot and even they planned to come again with their family. Service: I like to thank Kali (Manager), Senthil (Manager) and Nagalakshmi (Took order from us), all three are so kind and greeted us very well. We felt like we have our food in our own house. Service is really outstanding no delay and served on time with proper arrangements. Atmosphere: Ambience is really fantastic and that too Diwali we celebrated in a very awesome place with all musics turned ON and love to visit often. Over all they are too good. For Sure I will definitely recommend everyone to visit atleast once so automatcially they will come again and again due to the service taste and atmosphere. Once again thanks to the whole Utrecht Anjappar Team for treating us well and gave delicious food which we have after very long time.

This place is very crowded, I found dining here quite a stressful experience. We had reserved a table and arrived on time but still had to wait in a huddle by the door with other customers for over 10 minutes until our table was ready. The cutlery was provided in pots on the table, it was dirty with fingerprints and they didn't provide enough for our entire party, so one of my friends ate her dinner using 2 spoons. I managed to avoid covid for almost 4 years - I caught it at this restaurant. For those less concerned with hygiene, yes the flavours are very good. I found the portions quite small (especially the rice). The chicken curry was served on the bone, but due to the curry sauce it was impossible to tell what was bone and what was meat, and I don't really enjoy spitting out bits of bone and gristle in public. There were probably only 2-3 mouthfuls of actual chicken. Also, my friend at the other end of the table ordered a fish curry for their starter and it stank to high heaven so much so that I couldn't taste my own starter properly. So yes, the menu is diverse and has some good flavours, but next time I would choose a quieter and more spacious Indian restaurant for a more relaxed (and hygienic) dining experience.

Big kudos to the whole team for the new branch. We are very regular to Anjappar Amsterdam branch and were eagerly waiting for this branch. Went on the opening day and loved the ambiance and people. They took care of us very well and as usual the food was authentic and tasty. Quite impressed on how they continuously asked us about the feedbacks since it is newly opened in the city and we honestly liked the taste. Highly recommended. Dishes to try: Veg - Vegetable Briyani, Paneer garlic kebab, Kuzhi paniyaram Non veg - Seeraga Samba mutton Briyani (Only available in weekends) , mutton Shukka varuval We tried this and loved it. Tried out the new branch of Anjappar in Utrecht on a whim, and we were lucky to find a table for two without reservation. Loved the seeraga samba biryani recommended to us by the staff, and the porotta-mutton! Anjappar hits the taste of home flavours extremely close and is a delight. Great staff and hospitality. The only thing we felt could change as a policy with Anjappar overall (as the same incident happened with us in the Amsterdam branch as well a few months ago), is to remove the two people seating right between/next to the toilets. It’s very unhygienic and unfair on the clients coming in, paying premium prices to have to sit next to toilets with people going in and out to use the WC. We luckily requested and got a table change immediately, but others weren’t so lucky and got that table. It’s okay to leave that space empty for free access and people can enjoy their meal in peace away from the general area and not worry about some person coming out shaking their wet hands dry after using a toilet.

Delicious food, waiters are very attentive, and super nice atmosphere. We went for dinner, ordered chettinadu delicacies like Appam, fish fry, egg meals, mutton briyani along with chicken 65. One should skip several meals before visiting this amazing restaurant. Everything is so tasty & you cannot restraint yourself from having all of the dishes. We ordered a take away. When I arrived to collect it, at about 20:00 on a Friday evening, the restaurant seemed pretty overwhelmed — there were a lot of people waiting around the door, and lots of apologies for food being late, no tables being available, etc. My order eventually showed up about 25 minutes after the scheduled collection time. But that said, even in the chaos, the staff were friendly and courteous, and the atmosphere was pretty pleasant. And then, when the food eventually did show up... wow! We got an enormous pile of delicious delicacies — enough to satisfy both of us for at least two meals. Really, really good too: absolutely delicious, and not too cautious on the spice level. Best Indian food I've had in ages. They're still new. Give them a couple of months to get into a routine, and I bet they'll iron out the chaos. And if they can do that while keeping up the quality, this will really be a gem.

When I found out Anjappar was opening in Utrecht, the first thing that came to my mind is… now we have somewhere to go when Anjappar Amsterdam is fully booked out. We went to Anjappar Utrecht for dinner and we found out, again, that the standard of Indian food available here is beyond any other Indian restaurant in the Netherlands. I had the Thali (South Indian Platter with rice and a variety of curries) and it really took me back to India. The spinach curry, fish and the fried tiny anchovies are the most South Indian dishes you can find here. Along with their large variety of dosas, Anjappar never ceases to impress!!

Me and my partner just had our dinner at this restaurant and we are more than happy to recommend this to anyone. The restaurant on its own is quite well done and has a nice cozy atmosphere. The staff is incredibly sweet and nice. They are quite attentive and quick with the service. The food was very authentic South Indian food that we had absolutely loved! Everything was delicious. We even decided to get extras to take away, just since we live at a bit of a distance from Utrecht. We'll definitely be travelling for this restaurant. I highly recommend the appam curry combo.

I ordered delivery chicken curry and a mutton curry. I got 2 tiny pieces of chicken on a bone in a tiny tub of sauce. And the mutton had 3 tiny pieces also with bones. I have never seen anything like it. It was a side dish tub. So cheap people, you could have put in a normal size tub and gave a normal portion not an appetiser portion. Taste was amazing, but when you pay €40 for 2 people for a curry you expect to get full from it and have a good meal. In all Indian places i even leave some left overs. This was a sad sad tiny delivered meal. So disappointing. Never ordering again. We had to make some extra food as we were still hungry.

Excellent experience. We went for my wife's birthday, and even though we arrived 30 minutes before our reservation we were seated right away- on a busy Thursday evening. Service was fast, well-coordinated, and very polite. I think that they have an expediter who oversees the waitstaff, but I'm not sure. Our food came quickly and was nice and hot. We ordered all vegetarian, and the food was all delicious. We'll definitely be back, especially as they are so close to Utrecht Centraal. Please don't change a thing! Utrecht needs good restaurants like this.

If you’re looking for an authentic South Indian restaurant, then this is definitely one of the best you can bet on in the Netherlands. The place was busy but really loved the hospitality, service and the attention they’re giving to every table. It’s often difficult to see places with hospitality like this nowadays, i hope they continue it the same way. Food: We were very much satisfied with the food in terms of quality, quantity and taste. Fish meal was the winner for me. I am definitely recommending the place and will go back to try other items from the menu.

Toen we eindelijk naar een tafel mochten, hebben we 20 minuten gewacht voordat uberhaupt onze drankjes werden opgenomen nadat ik gebaarde naar de ober. Het eten werd wel snel geserveerd. De butter chicken masala was vettig, maar niet romig. Ook heel pittig gekruid en weinig kipstukjes erin. De garlic naan was wel lekker en de jeera rijst ook. Al met al niet het geld waard, ik kom niet nog een keer terug. Ik had er meer van verwacht gezien de andere, lovende reviews.

Het eten was echt fantastisch. Het was perfect zoals in Zuid-India. De bediening was super vriendelijk, ze hadden het wel erg druk. Gisteren hier puur toeval terecht gekomen. Eerste indruk toen we binnen kwamen was dat er een heel fijne sfeer hing. Leuke interieur, rustige fijne muziek. Maar uit eindelijk kom je voor het eten. Nou die was echt verrukkelijk. Eén van de betere Indiase restaurants die ik heb bezocht. Bediening was beetje onwennig, maar ik hoorde tijdens afrekenen dat ze nog maar een weekje open zijn! Dat verklaarde de onwennigheid. Ik zou het zeker aanraden en ik zou er zelf ook zeker terug komen!

If you are craving Indian food, look no further, Anjappar has you covered. Atmosphere is good, service is very friendly and speedy, and the food is of excellent quality. Portions are kind of crazy, we couldnt finish it all. Luckily the lady gave us some boxes to take home. All in all had an amazing evening, great food and excellent service. A great aditional branch of anjappar in the Netherlands. The restaurant is very beautiful and there is much space. The food I took was kozhi milagu rasam, chicken tandoori and special butter chicken biryani and it was so yummie (I still feel the flavours in my mouth). The service was also good, very friendly staff and they are willing to help you immediately. One extra point for the great music choice, which made the dinner more pleasent. Echt smakelijk gegeten bij dit relatief nieuwe Indiase restaurant, pal tegenover Tivoli Vredenburg. Goede gekruid, alles mooi op smaak, lekkere curry's. Ook de sfeer in het restaurant is d.m.v. een goed gekozen inrichting alleszins acceptabel. Er is nog wel een wereld te winnen in de klantgerichtheid van het personeel. Werkelijk niemand die Nederlands spreekt; OK, we wennen er langzaam aan, maar het kán gewoon niet in een stad waar Nederlands gewoon de voertaal is.

An authentic Indian restaurant with a proper vibe: partially Indian, partially European, taking the best parts of both. The place gets busy, so don’t forget to book a table. Food: Tandoori was good, so as curry. But Tandoori won, because a lot of place offer a good curry, but not lots of place offer a good tandoori. I liked my Chardonnay, but what you absolutely cannot miss is mango lassi. (Actually, they have various lassi options and not only mango). I am definitely recommending the place

Most of their food is pretty good, but I wouldn't go for the fish stuff. It smelled and tasted kinda old and off. The pomfret tikka was supposed to be grilled, but it felt more like it was steamed. On the bright side, the service was cool. They took my complaint seriously and promised to do better next time.

Had been here a couple of times, love the food. The mutton Shukka & Biryani are my favourites here. If you want to have a taste of authentic South Indian cuisine then this place serves great dosa , idli , appam , iddiappam and many more. Don’t forget to try the egg pepper roast, it’s my personal favourite. The staff is very friendly and Helpful.

Het eten is heerlijk bij Anjappar. Voordat ik hier ging eten, dacht ik dat ik Indiaas eten niet lekker vond maar Anjappar heeft al mijn verwachtingen overtroffen. Good atmosphere ! Went for lunch on a weekday & it's least crowded. Disappointed with the very slow service & wrong item served. We had to ask for it to be changed ! Have always visited the branch in Amsterdam & the service was quick and best. The service at Utrecht needs improvement.

It's really the best Indian food in Utrecht, and it's not like there isn't competition on the South Indian side. Everything is spicy, full of flavour, and very authentic. Stafd are also very nice. Please don't adapt your food for the western market or make it any less spicy!!!

My Indian colleague took us there, the food was absolutely delicious and authentic. The staff was also very nice and attentive. The interior was beautiful as well. Very good access from Utrecht central station & shopping center. I would love to come back here again.

I really like the place, and the food is good, extremely spicy. The sliding door for the ladies room allows for lot of space gain, it's a great addition in terms of design! We recommend to keep some space for melt-in-your-mouth Rasmalai as dessert !!!

Really liked the service. Food tastes good. We ordered takeaway and the food was just ready when we arrived. In the little time I was there, the atmosphere was very nice and everybody seemed to be eating with a smile (that's a good sign right?). Highly recommend. Do try it out.

They have the best chicken Masala we've ever eaten. The Biriyani was very good(spicy like jollof rice). Their spice and seasoning game is definitely on point. Very authentic and delicious meals. I highly recommend.

It's was a nice experience and good food. We really enjoyed it. The spices and herbs used were perfectly upto the level. The taste of the dishes were better than in India. I personally recommend this restaurant !!!!

As a South Indian I absolutely loved this place. Really good food service and decor. I’ve been to the one in dubai and I thought the food here was much better. I had the virunthu thali, which had everything, fish curry, mutton curry, chicken, biryani rice and more. Super worth it and delicious.

I, Ik, ik had “the dosa” before. But, I, ik, ik. Het was op straat. Dit, dit is aerocondicionado! Dat, en je kan binnen betalen.

Discovered this by accident and had no reservation. Fortunately I stayed, the food was delicious. I had a fish dish with an array of fish curry, rice, naan and smaller dishes all very tasty sll of it for just 21€. Great value for money. Highly recommended!

Het eten is lekker, erg snel op tafel. Service was niet goed. We moesten de bedieners iedere keer zelf aanspreken om te bestellen. Voorgerecht kwam tegelijkertijd met hoofd.
