I hate to give a bad review, the guide that I had was not v. pleasant and just out to make money. first of all he dissuaded me from visiting the mauseleum ( which was on the itinerary) as he said we would have to queue for at least 3 hours. Instead of this he suggested a lacquer workshop, which of course was a shopping opportunity. As I had already visited the old quarter on my own, he suggested the market ( which I had already visited too), then I had to hang around whilst he looked at electrical stores. this was just the 1st. day, the temple of the sword was on the agenda, he said that most tourists don't want to see it, as it is not interesting, I insisted and he was not happy. Next was the 90 minute massage, he could not find the venue, eventually did, immediately I knew that there was a problem, he informed me that 90 minutes meant 60 minutes as they had to have a medical report etc.. to be fair Aurora did rectify this. Then Mien chau, despite the guide having been many times, they couldn't find the hotel; the excuse was that it was new; in fact it has been there for 2 years. He was then 30 minutes late meeting me for the so called walk. this entailed going to a 'shop', where all the handicrafts are made in tis village?? afterwards I walked on my own and really enjoyed the valley. Next day, he was late again and the itinerary was not followed in any way at all. you know what the itinerary was supposed to be, this is what happened.. driving, stopping and asking directions, reversing, eventually arriving in the middle of nowhere ( ie. not the harbour), scrambling down to the river and after 15 minutes a boat arrived, then 15mins on the river, then a walk back to a point on the river, then waiting and then a boat to takre us across, then car back , but not to Lac and a family meal, to the tourist village and lunch with 20 other tourists. then to Ninh Binh and another v. friendly hotel, but no suggestions or help. Halong Bay was lovely, the guides were superb, it was the Aphrodite. Unfortunately it was back to the same guide; after 90 minutes in the car he suggested that we should stop for lunch ( I had just had the huge brunch on the ship), I said that I wasn't hungry but he insisted and of course it was yet another huge shop. I sat outside and waited for him for 25 minutes. After this he slept in the car all the way to the airport, when we arrived I gave the driver a good tip and the guide tried to help me check in.. by going to a huge queue when I was business class, I suggest that you never use this person again, he is ignorant and almost ruined my trip. I think the itinerary was great, would liked to have had 2 nights on the Aphrodite. The Melia is a lovely hotel, I was unlucky with the weather, it was v. cold and windy, however I enjoyed cycling in the countryside. Re. the Red Bridge cooking school; it was in the package, so I don't know how much it actually cost, but I wouldn't recommend it; it is v. much a conveyor belt experience and my 'new' guide said that there r much better places. It was hanging around waiting, then a trip to the market, but nothing was bought, although we were encouraged to buy knives, coffee etc, then a pleasant boat ride to the premises, then more sitting around waiting. then I suppose it was an entertaining lesson, eg. imagine that you r rolling a joint when you make this etc.. If I had paid for this, I would have been v. disappointed. Back at the Melia, the staff said the same. An Australian owns it and their claim to fame is that mick Jagger was there. anyway, I would use your company again because if I had had a different guide, it would have been wonderful. Just one small example, at the museum in Hanoi he wanted me to eat in a western McDonalds sort of place, I wanted to eat in the restaurant which is a sort of teaching school for young people, he said it was no good and the service was slow, I did not want to eat pizza and insisted. He just walked off, there were photographs of the food so I ordered some spring rolls, another guide showed me how to eat them.

My Wife and I have travelled pretty widely so far, we covered much of Europe, Thailand, Japan and USA + parts of Mexico, the Caribbean and India, so consider ourselves reasonably experienced travellers. Just returned from a two week trip which took in Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta and Mui Ne. A lot of potential for things to go wrong but everything went perfectly well. Every trip was a delight, the drivers and guides were brilliant in every respect and I don't think it would be possible to get a better experience and taste for Vietnam than our short visit delivered. I'm now looking forward to my next trip with Aurora so I can discover more about these fascinating countries.

We had a long trip north to south starting from Ha Noi and ending in Ho Chi Minh city and the Mekong Delta. We have loved every bit of the journey and we are now looking forward to our Cambodian leg of the trip. Thank you Vietnam, we will return to continue discovering you and your people! We are currently travelling through Cambodia and Vietnam with Aurora travel (booked through Exoticca). We cannot express enough how excellent our tour guide Mr Bunthorn was in Phnom Pehn. So knowledgable, caring and with a genuine passion for the country and educating visitors. We just want to say thank you for a great experience and it has left us with very fond memories of Cambodia which has a special place in our hearts!
