BCN Life made this move for our family possible. Akida and Lia Mashaka’s company was recommended to me by a friend who had recently used their services. We decided in early January that in the upcoming fall we wanted our daughter and son to be able to start school in Spain. Hugh Donagher was our primary contact with the company for obtaining a non-lucrative visa while we were still living in the states. Based on our location, we were required to use the Spanish Consulate of Los Angeles. Akida and Hugh were aware of all the requirements and nuances of working with the LA consulate, the documentation timelines and paperwork preferences. Without their expertise, it would have been a non-navigable transition. Not only did Akida and Hugh connect us with the required translators and insurance providers, they also helped us network to find a company who could assist with making the required appointments at the consulate. The navigation of the visa application felt like a backward timeline, as we had to pay non-refundable matriculation fees to secure slots at schools for our kids prior to even getting appointments for visas. But Hugh and Akida reassured us we would be able to make this move and they were amazing in helping us execute it. As testimony to their prowess, as I waited for my appointment, I witnessed the woman ahead of me breaking down in to tears as she was attempting to go through the same process as me. She had also worked with a lawyer to help prepare her for the consulate appointment, but was missing key documents (which can mean that you may need to start the process over from scratch). After the contentious interaction, I went up to the desk, was told by the clerk, yes she knew I had to fly in for the appointment, but if anything was out of sorts, I would have to go home. Due to Hugh’s diligence, I got through the whole appointment and actually received complements from the clerk on my organization. When I arrived the following morning for my son’s visa appointment, she was happy to see me and knew that all my paperwork would be in order. It is also very nice to work with Akida and Lia because not only have they worked with the many consulates of Spain in the US, they also have incredible connections throughout Barcelona. Lia and Oriol worked with us on Flat finding. Lia’s connections with real estate agents and companies, as well as the ex-pat community are paramount to her success. Lia also has incredibly knowledge about the neighborhoods around the city, which blocks are quiet, walkable, have great transit… basically all the essentials that are impossible to determine without having already lived in a city. Lia was incredibly perceptive to which flats would be a good fit for our family based on the reasons we wanted to live in Barcelona. She and Oriol provided us with amazing walking video tours of appartments and the neighborhoods around the flats. Once we had found an apartment, and they helped us negotiate our lease agreement, Oriol was able to work with the landlord so that the flat was ready for us on our arrival to the country. He had three terrific assistants to help us move in to our flat. Oriol assisted us in getting all of the utility bills switched in to our names and introduced us to our landlord (and having had Lia and Oriol to vet a landlord is also quite helpful). But the relocation service provided by BCN Life did not end there. Relocating to the Spain not only requires the visa, but the documentation and registration with the National and City government once you arrive, which like the visa, is a multi-step process. Within the two weeks of our arrival, we had obtained our empadronamiento, and completed our TIE application appointments. All in August when most of Spain is shut down. So I absolutely recommend working with BCN Life. They all worked together to decrease our stress, to help us through a fraught process, and successfully execute an international move with teenagers. I also know that as I have questions moving forward, I can count on their expertise.

After a year of planning, we have finally arrived in Barcelona and could NOT have done it without Lia and Akida at BCN Life. Wow! Their wealth of knowledge about the city, culture, language, schools, bureaucracies, housing, and recreation is so extensive. Being ex-pats themselves, they have been through the relocation process and completely know what it takes. Therefore, they offer the unique perspective of both that of ex-pats and that of long-time locals. Throughout the entire experience, we felt supported and knew we were in good hands. They were so professional, communicative, honest, good humored, and readily available – even with the 9-hour time difference between California and Spain. Working with BCN Life was the best decision my husband and I made in the moving process to Barcelona. My family is working with BCN life to achieve our goal of time abroad with the family. When I decided to make a move from the US to Barcelona, I knew I needed help. I researched several relocation services, and with a friends recommendation, I chose BCN Life, and I am so glad that I did. They are not the cheapest company, but you get what you pay for. However, if you want a minimally stressful move, do what I did, hire them and you will not be sorry.

I’m going to make 2 predictions about your relocation to Barcelona: (1) you will get lost in its bureaucracy, and (2) you will absolutely love Barcelona and not want to leave for a long while. Both of these are made that much easier if you have the right people helping you out along the way. Falling in love with BCN is easy. Bureaucracy is not. Getting your visa is not. Finding the right school is not. Finding an apartment is not. Finding the right neighborhood is not. Getting your NIE is not… Do you get the point? Things work at a different pace in Spain; the rules are not the same and things Americans take for granted like “customer rights” (if I may use that term) aren’t the same. Sometimes it feels like just about everything is open for negotiation here, which is why you need a local to help you. It just so happens BCN Life are both local and expert negotiators. Through their hard work and guidance we got our visa, found a great school, very quickly got our NIE, found an absolutely amazing flat in the best neighborhood in Barcelona, and always had every question answered with speed, care, and professionalism. The team at BCN Life is well connected and the best at what they do. We were lucky to have them help us on our journey to Barcelona.

WOW. Hire these guys, it's the best you're going to get. I spoke with Hugh (sales) to start with, and he helped me understand the process, he even gave me some good advice that my lawyers hadn't yet confirmed with me. Since I already had legal counsel, I used BCN to help me find a flat. I thought I would try it myself for a week or so prior to hiring them, and maybe save a little money. I quickly learned that wasn't possible. I speak some Spanish, but I also work full time, and didn't have time to look at 50 flats a week. I tried it on my own one weekend, and couldn't even make appointments by myself. If you're not hiring BCN, plan on spending weeks and weeks just on the phone trying to arrange viewings, talk about prices, dates, etc. They were incredibly organized and responsive.
