NOTE: This is just one person's experience. I'm sure others have had a much better impression of the store than I did. Nevertheless, this is a review, so as a reader, I hope my review has been constructive. My impression of this place has not been good. As a perspective customer, I was misinformed about their bike availability and price range. While I was aware that this store is bike repair place, I was referred by another bike shop owner that they do offer bikes for sale. I've then contacted the person on Back Alley by phone and they confirmed to me that they have bikes on sale, with a minimum price of $399. I walked to their store. The employee I spoke with inside the store contradicted what the other employee on the phone has stated to me. They stated that there was only one bike for sale, which was over $3,300, unless you had it customized. I then asked for the price and time average ranges for a custom bike to get built. "It depends" was not a constructive response that gives me any understanding or expectation of what to consider when buying a customized bike in Back Alley. The store's bad impression on me was first and likely last, since there is a lack of cross-communication and no clear price indication for their products or services, not even within ball-park range. With that said, I already bought a bike from another third-party vendor for $1,200. If they could at least have given me a clear pricing range and time length for a custom bike to get built, I would have considered buying there and manage my expectations. Further, it is important to make a good impression towards perspective customers, because that $1,200 bike sale purchase could have went to Bike Alley but it want to another third-party vendor as a result. That is all. Update: To the owner who've responded, I appreciate your apology and your in-depth response. I've adjusted my rating from 1 star to 5 stars to reflect that. I will leave this message as-is to serve as an opportunity to reflect on how a bad review can change (as well as showing humility) because as people, our emotions are dynamic but our local economy should always be supported. So, to you sir, I thank you for serving your business during these trying times. Take easy!

I have stumbled upon my new favorite bike shop. I had been struggling with gear shift issues for a few weeks while commuting to and from work. I live in the Central District just east of First Hill which is a climb biking up from the train station on King Street. My neighborhood bike shop was too busy to help me out without scheduling an appointment. Last night, I noticed that the gear cable was stripped and literally unraveling, I couldn't safely commute with it in that condition. I rang Back Alley because of the several (6-8) bike shops within a 2 mile radius of my home, they opened an hour earlier than the others. Ben said, "sure, bring your bike down, leave it with me for the afternoon and you can pick it up before we close at 6pm." When I dropped it off Ben immediately started giving me prices on each piece including service charge. Though I appreciated that, my perspective is that, my bike is my only mode of transportation, cost is not an issue. I asked if he had time to replace my handle bar tape (I had brought my own) to which he replied "of course" without hesitation. I bopped around Pioneer Square for a few hours when I got a text from Ben stating that my front derailer needed replacing. I actually knew that before I took it in but had forgotten to mention it. All in all, I got a new gear cable, new front derailer, new bike chain, and he replaced my handle bar wrap. Oh, I also bought a new helmet! AND he cleaned my bike!! It looks and rides like new! All of this in 3 hours and for under $300! I'm thrilled and relieved! Ben didn't know that my bicycle is currently my only form of transportation. But, he took care of me and my bike as though he did know that. In this time of uncertainty and failure of humans to be nice to each other, I really appreciate genuine service without judgement. Thanks Ben! I'll be returning to the Back Alley!

Nothing but great things to say about this shop. Just moved here 3 weeks ago and already I know this is my home base. When I arrived in Seattle I was focused more on mountain biking but discovered that the area has a lot of great pavement riding to offer, so I turned to back alley for guidance on where to start. Didn’t do any research just landed on their doorstep because it popped up on the map when I was driving around the area. I’ve spent hours with these guys over the last 2 weeks asking all the dumb questions and never once did I feel “sold” or any sense of urgency. Just helpful insight from a humble group of bike enthusiasts and no “gatekeeper” vibes at any point. They really just wanted to help me define my vision. Sounds like they love working with folks to build out the perfect rig from the ground up and they are happy to work with any budget. I visited some other shops in the area to demo some bikes (nothing bad to say, great culture all around) and I ended up buying a used one off Craigslist. I brought it in to Back Alley for a tune up, and although the bike is in good shape, it looked to my untrained eye like some things needed replacing (rusty rotors, slightly worn pads, cable coating starting to wear down in some areas). These 25mm tires are a new thing for me and Im not sure how to tell when they are ready for replacement. It would have been easy for them to take my money and do some unnecessary work on the bike but they gave it a once-over and assured me I was good to go. Just needed a new chain. They threw one on for me and when I went to check out the owner let me know they did a quick true on the wheels free of charge. Even if its out of your way.. check these guys out. Such a great experience. Thank you to everyone at the shop who helped me out and props to Ben for setting the tone. I’ll be back boys!

use to go here a lot, they used to be good, traded weed for repairs. then they started to slack off doing bad jobs on repairs. the final two straws, they custom made a rear wheel shortly after not smoothly gliding so I took it to another bike shop and ally bike shop put to many barring's in axle and that why it wasn't riding smoothly. worse yet, they didn't even use the axle I gave them! they replaced it with a cheaper one that didn't have a logo on it! What I think they did this is a trek brand I didn’t think about it’s a special cut they probably would’ve swapped it out with a different rim altogether because it was taken way too long for this order to be done. They should’ve called me and said it couldn’t be done but the owner said we can customize the cut to any link when I dropped it off! if that was the truth why was there a different Back axle with no name on it, a generic with no label?

  • Blake Croxdale

I had an unfortunate run in with the trolly tracks and, spoiler alert, the trolly tracks won. I was then left with damaged SRAM shifters/brake levers that needed to be replaced...along with rage at those damn trolleys. They not only had the shifters/brake levers available in the shop, but they gave me a great deal and installed them within mere hours. I cannot believe how quick, professional, helpful, and just awesome my experience was at Back Alley Bike Repair. With its proximity to my work, central location, good shop, great people, and quick turn around I will happily be bringing my bicycle back in when I inevitably lose again to the trolly tracks, or any repair. I'm coming for you tracks! Next time you're going down...not me.

Had an enjoyable ride in Seattle because this bicycle shop rocks! Chain shortly broke on a bike that I rented for the day to ride in Seattle after getting off the ferry from the peninsula. Rather than call it a day I gave them a call. Took me right in as soon as I got there and made sure the chain was repairable rather than needing replacement. Huge thanks to Rowan(did all the work), Ben, and Cooper for the emergency repair and fantastic customer service! A real cool bicycle shop, with a chill atmosphere, and literal back alley vibe(Because it’s actually in the back alley!) that you can depend on if you happen to run into issues with your bicycle. Highly recommended!

  • BikeLady Seattle

I LOOOOOOVE Back Alley. Ben is super patient and friendly and has great advice. He and Julian helped me trick out an old steel bike with beautiful new parts to refresh it for my husband, have put up with my impatient toddler running around their shop and ringing the hamburger bell while I wait, repaired my super worn out Campy shifters, and Ben entertains my long email exchanges about fantasy new bikes (that they're not even selling to me!). They are a great downtown bike repair place in a sweet location with a chill vibe. I might move in. Go here! Be nice to these guys, they're great (and don't talk down to women!).

  • William Roberts

I would NEVER go to them again. They are a SCAM shop. I went to them to get a new back- wheel after, having mine stolen and ran into more unsrupulous people. They told me it would cost me 100 dollars for a new wheel, tire , tube and, gears. I came back a week and half later and, found a rinky dink tire on a supposedly new wheel. I had him change it and, then he tried to charge me 207 dollars!!!!. They are indeed a shop good people should AVOID!!!!. It's the old case of the shadey mechanic takes advantage of the in need customer. I should never have bought my bike to these bottom feeders!!!!

  • Aileen Granstrom

This bike shop is my new favorite near where I live. Jessica was a wizard mechanic in solving my cabling problem, and a delight to chat with the whole time! She invited me over to the stand to help me understand the problem and took care in explaining to me in case I wanted to do the fix myself in the future. Omar was also very helpful and knowledgeable in answering questions about a new bike I test rode. We explored many options for how they could build the bike I wanted, how I could build it, the sizing and different component q's, etc. Overall great shop and people.

  • Daniel Brown

I was nearby when I noticed my motorcycle's rear tire was flat. I didn't want to get a tow and I was worried about even looking for the nearest gas station with air without damaging my rim. Thankfully, these guys have a small compressor they were able to bring to the door to reach my bike. Made it work even without the proper nozzle attachment. Super grateful for their assistance despite it being near the end of the workday with customers in the shop. I work in the area and see a lot of people come here. So I'm guessing they are pretty good with bicycles too

  • Candace Faber

These guys are amazing, every single time. I would trust Ben & Julian with my firstborn child (which is kind of how I feel about my bicycle). They always take great care of me and remind me why love biking, even on those days stuff is just falling apart. They helped me tune up, upgrade, and make the most of my old single-speed as well as to keep my road bike running fresh. Always quick, high quality care at a fair price – exactly the kind of small businesses Pioneer Square needs. Give Back Alley some love – they'll love you (and your bike) right back!

  • Katherine Moore

We rented bikes from Back Alley for a week while we stayed at the Panama Hotel. They reserved bikes for us a couple weeks in advance, the guys working were so helpful and personable, and the bikes did great - definitely the best way to get around Seattle. We were able to go all over downtown, took the ferry to Bainbridge and rode bikes on the island, rode around west Seattle, and took them on the light rail to check out the University of Washington. So much fun, I highly recommend! The bikes were definitely the backbone of our vacation! :D <3

  • Thaddeus Driscoll

I've been going to Back Alley for awhile now and you'd be pressed to find a better or more unique shop. These guys have great service and feedback, they value bikes that get ridden way more than bikes that cost a lot. Back Alley has a loyal community around it which says a lot about a business, especially in Seattle where everything else seems to close and restart every year. Spend some time asking questions and getting to know the staff and owner, you'll likely receive some great feedback and even better bike routes.

  • Bekky Herr

By far my favorite bike shop in Seattle. Both times I've had work done, they took the time to talk through a bunch of options for several repairs and upgrades my bike needed, and seemed to really care about the end result. I'm super impressed with their service, friendliness, flexibility, and value. Also, they have just the right number of options to choose from without being overwhelming (fenders, lights, tires, accessories, etc.). Will be back again soon.

  • Suzanne Kaltenbach

Great shop! I blew out my back tire on my way to work. I walked my bike over during lunch and it was ready to go with 2 new tires (front tire was about ready to go, too) and a new tube a few hours later. Just swung by after work and was able to ride home! The people there were really friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. They took the time to explain the different tire options and gave their recommendations based off of what I said I was looking for.

  • Joshua Vincent

Was in a super tight spot regarding a bike service and called all around and no body could fit me in or know how to help. I called Ben and he instantly said yeah bring it in. Backstory: I was heading out for a bikepacking trip later that day. Ben fixed my hydraulic brakes and did a few other things to make my ride safer. Can't thank those guys enough for getting me in, given my situation. Will be my new go to in Seattle. Thanks again guys!

  • Tiger Hsu

Very good customer service, and give me honest advices by considering my situation and concerns to save my money from the pocket. And show and explain items one by one. Further, he (Ben, the owner) shows me every step with tips during my flat tire(tube) replacement that I can consider to do it on my own with tools or go to the store in the future. I would definitely recommend others to visit whenever you need something related to bike.

  • Charles Stillman

I was riding with a problem, looking for a solution. I dropped in on the guys at Bike Alley Bikes, and they fixed a puzzling problem with my nonfunctional TRP HyRd front disc brake. They fit me in and got me on my way within an hour. That was a very good thing as I had ten miles yet to go that day. Not only was the repair effective, but the mechanic patiently explained what had gone wrong and how to avoid the problem in the future.

  • Evan Lytle

The owner is really rude and loves to make fun of your bike if it's not worth at least $2000. Everything here is overpriced and you can't get any help without a healthy size side of stuck up. The latest time the owner said something about " guys who come and only buy inner tubes" to me. He doesn't know his shop sucks so bad I only go there if I have to because I got a flat while in the neighborhood and I'm out of inner tubes.

  • Roman P

I dropped off my road bike to diagnose a creak near the handlebars that I couldn't fix myself. The guys at Back Alley disassembled by bottom bracket, pedals, and headset...lubed everything up and put it back together. If you bike to work downtown, this is the place to get a fix during the work week. Fast turn around and great recommendations on other maintenance I need to perform. Highly recommended.

  • Michael Wood-Vasey

Rented a bike for a week to commute between Pioneer Square and UW. They were good and helpful and making sure I was set up well on the bike; they fit a rack on for the panniers I had brought with me. Good service, good atmosphere. The bike was fun and a well-chosen steel racing frame suitable commuting. If you need bike service in Pioneer Square, definitely check this store out.

  • Peter Beshai

Deep expertise combined with patience and thoughtfulness makes Back Alley Bike Repair the best bike shop in Seattle. All the workers I spoke with were incredibly accommodating and nonjudgmental, which I especially appreciated given my seemingly endless barrage of questions. So excited to have my Surly revived for another decade by this fantastic team.

  • Steve Hatzenbeler

Excellent service and they don't talk down to you even if you don't know everything about bikes. They built a gorgeous Soma Fog Cutter bike for me this summer and it was a great experience. They helped me find the best parts and were patient in answering a multitude of questions. Highly recommend this shop for a bike build and/or any repairs.

  • Jonathan Pak

All around great bike shop! Ben is always helpful and the mechanics are quick and very skilled! Ben is a master wheel builder and provides above and beyond services for your bike needs. He is very honest and will give it to you straight. All the services are incredibly affordable. That's why I recommend all my friends to visit his shop!

  • Alaina Boyle

So grateful to Back Alley Bike Repair! I had called several bike repair shops looking for somewhere to help with my electric scooter’s flat tire. Even though I had already purchased the inner tube needed, most bike shops turned me away until Back Alley! They provided friendly, efficient, and affordable service. Would highly recommend!

  • Michael Bohannon

I had a flat tire on my fat bike, didn't expect them to have a tube in stock, figured I'd just get it patched. Turns out, they actually had a 26x4" tube stocked! Great service, quick repair, even tightened my headset - Ben, Julian, if you guys are ever in Portland, come by my shop, Western BikeWorks, you've got a pint on the house.

  • Brian Tucker

I've stoped in every now and then for basic repair supplied (cables, chain lube, etc.) and always found the staff friendly and helpful. At my recent visit I also noticed they are getting a lot more parts and accessories in stock. This shop is a great resource for bike commuters in the downtown area!

  • B Yo

Didn’t have a bike with me on this visit so I cannot speak about their repair services. However they seem to have a good eye for art, design and I appreciate the use of cats on their signage. The alley to access is also well maintained and clean which indicates a certain civic pride to me.
