Bank of Ireland Group plc (Irish: Banc na hÉireann) is a commercial bank operation in Ireland and one of the traditional Big Four Irish banks. Historically the premier banking organisation in Ireland, the Bank occupies a unique position in Irish banking history. At the core of the modern-day group is the old Bank of Ireland, the ancient institution established by Royal Charter in 1783. The headquarters of the bank until the 1970s was the impressive Parliament House on College Green, Dublin. This building was originally designed by Sir Edward Lovett Pearce in 1729 to host the Irish Parliament, and it was the world's first purpose-built bicameral parliament building. The bank had planned to commission a building designed by Sir John Soane to be constructed on the site bounded by Westmoreland Street, Fleet Street, College Street and D'Olier Street (now occupied by the Westin Hotel). However, the project was cancelled following the Act of Union in 1800, when the newly defunct Parliament House was bought by Bank of Ireland in 1803. The former Parliament House continues today as a working branch. Today, visitors can still view the impressive Irish House of Lords chamber within the old headquarters building. The Oireachtas, the modern parliament of the Republic of Ireland, is now housed in Leinster House in Dublin. In 2011, the Irish Government set out proposals to acquire the building as a venue for the state to use as a cultural venue. On 5 March 2009, the shares reached €0.12 during the day, thereby reducing the value of the company by over 99% from its 2007 high. At the 2009 AGM, shareholders criticised the performance of their Auditors, PriceWaterhouseCoopers. The Central Bank told the Oireachtas Enterprise Committee that shareholders who lost their money in the banking collapse were to blame for their fate and got what was coming to them for not keeping bank chiefs in check, but did admit that the Central Bank had failed to give sufficient warning about reckless lending to property developers.
My father is an idiot. Important contextual information. In summer 2001, my father, brother of then 13 and I went to Dublin on a city trip. He refused to book accommodation in advance. So we arrive in the city and go the tourist office to make a booking. Had to settle with a business hotel on Harcourt Street ($$$). As it cost more then he could withdraw in a day, he would make three payments. On day three, no more money was available, reached the withdrawal limit. Spent the majority of the day at the B of I, getting money wired from his Belgian bank. In the end they closed for the day, no money. Luckily for the time difference, the B of I was still open. Seeing an incompetent idiot with two underage children and no money to pay for accommodation, the kind lady that had been facilitating us, took pity, and borrowed us the third withdrawal. She was absolutely amazing. And by extension, the B of I was absolutely amazing. Will never forget that there is such a thing as a kind bank.
The worst bank in Ireland and the worst bank I ever had an account with. Website is a joke, their service is slow, definitely not user friendly, their security is also very bad. I had many bad experience with their costumer support and the way they handle any issue you have. Once I opened a complain and I am still waiting to hear back form them. Overall this bank is sooo bad that I am taking my time to come here and write about them!
Great location and so so services offered. Lack of customer service it seems. When you call in you are left on the call for way too long till someone answers, and they often cant tell you anything. Calls backs are rear so you have to chase again. Walked into the bank at 2 and only 1 person in customer service area, and a few people already waiting inline. Stood for 15 min and left. Main building but there is no one to help you
Customer for over 10 years. Can't call branch. Voice mails left not returned. If you do get a call back it's at a time which suits them, if it doesn't suit you they really don't care. Forms left at business desk sometimes lost. Almost every request for anything at any branch it is answered by NO because they couldn't be bothered. Part of oligopoly in Ireland so won't change. Keep money under mattress and gold in back garden.
Staff refuse to action the most basic of requests even though you are standing directly in front of them. They instead tell you to phone up the call centre or go online. I watched a queue of customers in front of me being told "oh we don't do that here". It feels like they keep a score of how many customers they can shuffle back out the door without doing anything for them.
An alright location, services are somewhat limited here despite it being a massive bank but the employees are doing everything they can. The building is absolutely wonderful and actually used to be the sitting house for Irish Parliament. I do recommend giving the area you can walk about in a walk through because it’s a wonderful example of buildings from the past.
Worst customer service ever and so unfriendly! Anthony and Carroll was so rude even when I had a simple request. So much attitude and cut me off mid convo, gave me peak anxiety when visiting. Everything (transactions/procedures) takes at least a week, no efficiency at all I would give 0 stars if I could. Never recommending BOI to anyone, closed my account.
Edificio imponente e ben tenuto.
This is bank that stuck in the past, 365 Online that should work 24/7 is in fact limited to branches and working hours so if you want simple pdf estatement to be printed over the weekend you must wait till monday, Overdraft? Forget 4-5 days of digestion. If you want flexibility and modern banking stay away from BOI.
Worst experience in customer service, long term customer of Bank of Ireland and will be moving accounts due to experience with Bank. No point in hiring staff, they only direct you online, incredibly difficult experience using banking services in my own country compared with banking services used in other countries.
Terrible services for a personal checking account, need to call and wait multiple times before an issue is finally addressed. Most of the staff is lovely in trying to help, but you still get rude assistance from time to time (e.g. random hang ups that require you to call and wait in the queue again).
I had to call fraud line and I was treated really poorly. It is probably the first official complaint I filled in my life. Fraud team should be more understanding and do not hang up if they don’t know the answers. Very very poor for a bank we rescued with tax payers money
I've banked with Bank of Ireland since I was a student. It's a historic place and one of the more interesting places there is the old House of Lords. Before Covid it could be visited on Tuesdays. Hopefully that will happen again sometime …
The girls working in the bank , Kayleigh and Danielle , were very kind in assisting me with a very stressful and worrying matter with my bank account . Dealing with them made me feel more at ease and less anxious as I was extremely distressed!
I was in the bank today and got assistance from Anthony who was so helpful which is very rear in BOI these day. Anthony should be put in charge of customers service training Thank you Anthony from a very happy customer
Dealt with a lady called Maria Quinn for remortgaging our home. Attentive from the first call to draw down. Best experience I have had while applying for a financial product.
The worst bank ever. The online banking is terrible, I need to call nearly every time and wait crazy times till they pick up. Terrible. Terrible!!!
The security guards let us into the house of Lords during a meeting, because he knew it was our last day in Dublin.
Good bank. Bit empty these days owing to technology but never had a bad experience with or without staff.
The building has no windows. Once you have left your money there it never sees the sun again :-)
Queues, queues, queues! Terrible bank! If you like to waste time then this is the bank for you!
Very easy to set up an account. highly reocmmende Patrick for all of his assistants
Terrible attitude of employees to the client. Was today, no help. …
These live in the stone age, hopefully they get crushed by Revolut and N26
I've just spend 30 minutes trying to get through to eventually be cut off.
Beautiful Architecture Construction of College Green began in 1728
Awful. Don’t put your money there. Worst fraud department
