Summary: Classic and innovative dishes using the best local ingredients, presented simply to emphasize their quality and freshness. Outstanding service from Peter, who is warm and willing to share his abundant knowledge. Food: Three course prix-fixe menu consisting of a choice between two each of appies, mains, and desserts. We were able to sample everything by ordering two. Highlight was the seemingly-simple charred broccoli smothered in a shio koji beurre blanc - this dish disappeared FAST. The ling cod was also excellent, cooked just to the point of flakiness, enhancing the natural butteriness of the fish. Also added-on the burratta and anchovy toast x 2 - we had to order two as my son loves it (and so do we). The desserts, a panna cotta and a sponge cake, were both lovely and light. Drink: We had one wine pairing, which is normally three wines, and Peter was kind enough to split it into half-pours so we could have a wine appropriately paired to each of the very different dishes. Needless to say, the pairings were flawless and even introduced us to one that we would've dismissed out of hand if we had sample it without food. I'm still missing Upstairs years after its closure, so I consoled myself with the three cocktails Peter had on the menu (one at a time, I'm not a savage). His Black Manhattan with the Bearface Matsutake Whisky was incredibly silky and tasty. Service: Peter has been doing this a long time, and genuine hospitality is second nature to him. He's helpful without being obtrusive; he'll engage with you exactly as much as you want him to. He's also very knowledgeable - though he freely admits when he doesn't know something as he sees it as an opportunity to learn. Somehow, he balances his duties as server, sommelier, and bartender seamlessly, while maintaining his cheerful and unruffled demeanour. Space: A small 'wine bar' with a few seats at the bar and a half-dozen tables inside. The lone outside table is well-suited to people-watching and lazing as the sun sets and late afternoon turns into night. Concrete floors, high ceiling, and exposed duct work. A single, accessible washroom. A well-thought-out space where you don't feel crowded or hurried. Simple, but no complaints.

We went to the restaurant for date night and loved it. The restaurant was small but well ventilated with high ceilings and the tables were distanced. The food was amazing from start to finish. The star of the night was the delicata squash which was honestly a flavour bomb, sweet, a little tangy and finished with a bit of a spicy kick. We also loved their tuna tartare special and the tofu dish. We found the wine list to be extremely interesting and intriguing. They had wines that you don't normally find in restaurants. I don't necessarily mean they are rare, they are just not what I would consider mainstream. It's a lot of wines made of grape varietals not normally associated with a certain region. Thankfully, the servers were very knowledgeable about the wines so we received great suggestions which helped with pairing. I'm happy to say that this is the best restaurant I've been to this year. A new favourite for sure! UPDATE: returned to the restaurant with some girl friends 2 months later and was very disappointed by the food the 2nd time around and removed 2 stars from my review. They changed the format of the menu from a la carte with an option to do a set menu, to only making a set menu available with 5 or 6 options for add-on. The add ons were mostly cold or starter type dishes. Tried the set menu and a few of the add ons and the only dish that was of the same quality of my first visit was the Ling cod. Everything else felt very uninspired and bland, or flavours were otherwise not harmonious - nothing sang. Not sure what happened with their executive chef. Sadly, I will not be returning.

We had a fantastic meal at Bar Gobo! Asian fusion flavours from Korean Chef Jiwon Seo (formerly from Burdock & Co). We tried their July 2023 three-course prix fixe tasting menu $65 per person. There were two options per category (appetizer, main, dessert) and we ended up ordering one of each option to share and have a taste of everything. Portions were generous and we were very satisfied after the meal. Appetizers: Option 1 - Zucchini (our favourite) Option 2 - Humboldt Squid Main: Option 1 - Ling cod (our favourite) Option 2 - Pork loin Dessert: Option 1: Raspberry, white chocolate mousse, shortbread cookie (our favourite) Option 2: Mugwort - farro cake with toasted rice cream We also added the burrata to start which was one of the best burratas I've ever had - it was drizzled in chili oil which added a unique flavour combination. The space is small and intimate with limited seating, reservations are highly recommended. The kitchen is actually part of the front bar, so if you want to get a view of the chef and sous in action, bar seating is your way to go. Service was friendly and fantastic!

Bar Gobo has quickly become one of our favorite spots in Vancouver. We currently live in LA but whenever we visit Vancouver, we always make it a point to hit them up! They focus on natural and biodynamic wines that pair beautifully with their dishes. Peter is always a fantastic host. We usually opt for the pre-fixe menu and we ask him to pair wines with each dish. His knowledge and passion for food and wine is evident and always lends to a phenomenal experience whenever we come here. Curtis was very friendly and helpful as well. It is evident that Bar Gobo has an amazing team that delivers a well-rounded dining experience that has us coming back for more. Standouts include their Heirloom Paradise Tomatoes (so good we almost ordered it again!) Oven Roasted Ling Cod, Farm Broccoli with a Shio Koji Beurre Blanc, Short Ribs, and their Chocolate Olive Oil Cake. Shoutout to Chef Neil for killing it in the kitchen! 5 stars all around for Bar Gobo. Big things coming for them. Don’t sleep on this one, guys!

1. Food was mid 2. Drinks were overpriced 3. What is it with this new trend of kicking people out of a restaurant after a certain period of time has elapsed. I understand that you’re a for profit business but that’s not the way restaurants ever worked - it’s not like we were sitting there drinking water we were ordering 2x $20 glasses of wine every 30 minutes on top of ordering the set menu. Again I understand that you have tables that you need to fill on a certain schedule but at the end of the day you might make slightly more money optimizing seating times and kicking out customers but in the long term you do damage to what restaurants are. But this is the Vancouver hospitality industry…so yeah I think this and all restaurants that do this deserve a one star, although even if I were to ignore this point the score would be 2 stars, with an extra for the burrata. Nowhere else have I ever been forced out of a “nice” restaurant after a set time - this “innovation” can’t stand lol

I’m not sure how this place has such great reviews. Perhaps we went on an off night because we were underwhelmed by every dish we got and service was a bit slow. It’s actually one of the worst meals we’ve had in Vancouver and we’ve been to all the Michelin and other noteworthy restaurants in town and in the world. It smelled delicious when we got to the restaurant so we had high hopes but the flavor complexity was lacking and combination of ingredients didn’t work together texturally. They were however beautifully plated and the wine selection was great with a very knowledgeable sommelier. We really wanted to like this place and were even more disappointed we paid +$600 for 4 people for a subpar meal. Again, perhaps it was an off night but it missed the mark tremendously for us.

One of the best meals my partner and I have had in Vancouver (if not the whole PNW). Portion sizes were fantastic for a weekend date night in this approachable and cozy restaurant. A reservation for two at the bar gives you a great look into the plating and preparation of each dish going out as well as an opportunity to talk through the small-yet-impactful wine list. There are some seriously good varietals on the menu with some producers that are tough to come by. For saucier meals try the broccoli if available, and the short rib was absolutely incredible. Desserts capped off the meal nicely and we grabbed a couple of glasses of wine afterwards to chat at the bar with the staff. We’ll be back regularly, this place is a gem.

This is a cool little spot in Chinatown that offers fusion Korean style eats. You get to choose one item from each section on the menu, which is printed on lined paper (super cool)! It’s related to Burdock and Co, so you get a similar experience, good food, service, and similar interior experience. The cocktail menu is quite small, so we went with cider, which was delicious. The restaurant is small but it doesn’t feel small as they are spaced out well. Overall the food is tasty and the menu is interesting. Some of the dishes were well made and blended well. Would love to try this place again with their next menu change. Definitely recommend checking it out some time before it gets too busy.

Was really excited to try Bar Gobo but while the flavours were fine to solid, many were quite forgettable. The Ling cod in particular, on braised daikon and doenjang butter, was the usual bland white fish that's a canvas for sauce rather than tasty in itself. The Endive pastry starter was creamy but altogether quite boring. The roasted Celeriac starter was much better. The only major highlight was the tender beef cheek, which fell apart easily, and was deliciously sweet from the makgeolli sauce.

Pretty cool experience, I really enjoyed our time at the restaurant. With the exception of another table, we had the restaurant to ourselves. While not a big restaurant, the place feels spacious. The menu is set, giving you two options for an appetizer and a main dish. All of the dishes tasted really good, but my only criquqie would be that the pasta dish only had five pieces... Pretty sure that Bar Gobo is more focused on flavours, but it was all good! Service was phenomenal, and the wine selections peaked my interests. Looking forward to the next menu options!

Bar Gobo is the moment. My partner and I celebrated valentines the day after since Bar Gobo is closed on Tuesdays and shared the entire menu family style. We also shared one order of beverage pairings since he had to drive. The dishes were perfectly balanced and the pairings were unbelievable - especially both the desserts (basque cheesecake and chocolate mousse) and the averill creek vermouth. Chefs kiss!! Every stage of our dining experience added to the previous layer and we ended the meal off being very happy - delectable!

I went with my parents and we had an amazing experience. The food was all incredible, and so inventive. The staff was really knowledgeable and friendly, and they suggested a perfect wine pairing, which we are now looking into buying for our home. It was a really cozy spot, and not too crowded, though we went on a Thursday night so this might be different at other times. Highly recommend for a celebration or date night!

While we only went for a glass of wine, which was nice and the staff was knowledgeable, during our short 45 mins in the restaurant it began to be so steamy that the windows were all fogged, my straightened hair began to frizz, and we were sweating (including the staff). One of the machines they use for cooking gives off a Crazy high pitched sound which made the experience worse. That being said, the tasting menu looked nice and I’d like to return to try it

Exactly the perfect little wine bar everyone wishes they lived around the corner from. Constantly changing food specials. Friendly service all around. Fun wine list with a great sommelier who will meet you wherever you're at in terms of taste and knowledge and help you find some cool new wines you may not know. Unfussy decor, but they embrace the classy little details...someone always seems to be polishing wine glasses. Love this place.

Was supposed to go for dinner and drinks with two friends - sadly due to COVID they both had to bail. Decided to take myself for dinner and so glad I did! The squash with nduja cream is to die for, mussels with croutons makes you wonder why you've never had croutons with your mussels, and Peter didn't miss with the wine recommendations. Unpretentious yet magical flavor combinations - will be back (alone or with friends)!

  • Alexander Scott

Great service but the menu right now is awful. I was curious why it didn’t get a Michelin nod but understand now. Really disappointing as this used to be our favourite. Extremely expensive place to take a chance on being served unenjoyable food. We ordered both tasting menus and only enjoyed 1/6 dishes. The trout was inedible.

Relaxed vibe with a curated drink menu and a very under appreciated food menu. If you get a chance to do the tasting menu, I highly recommend it. The anchovy toast is so simple and really addictive. The restaurant is cosy and makes sense for the location and the vibe. Cool wine bar atmosphere, but come as you are. It's very welcoming with Peter Van de Reep, managing, who was previously at Campagnolo Upstairs.

What a lovely place! Great service, intimate and cosy interior. I still dream about the thyme-infused panna cotta I had the first time I came. The cream just tasted so fresh and luxurious. The second time, we did the tasting menu and enjoyed it. My favourite dish was the acorn squash. Perfect for fall! The wine is really nice here and there's a good range of options.

  • Lindsay Spencer

A charming wine bar in Chinatown. The food is excellent- the kitchen does a wonderful job of blending unique flavors, and all for a very reasonable price. The service is excellent too; my water glass was never empty. Sparkling water is the default water service which was a nice little bonus as most restaurants charge extra for this. Highly recommend!

Delicious and artful presentation. The burrata was the best I have ever had, served with home made sourdough bread. You have to go. Friendly service with a knowledgeable sommelier. What a great evening.

Amazing selection of small plates (and the perfect number of veggie plates for a meal for two!). Produce from our favorite farmers, delicious selection of wine and everything packed with flavor; couldn't ask for more. Staff are all super attentive and sweet. We need more great places like this! Thanks to those who pulled this together.

Deceptively delicious! The ambient lighting doesn't do the plates justice. But the tastes that tickle the palate are a swirling kaleidoscope of culinary adventures that bewilderingly bewitches the diner. Service was unobtrusively attentive.

I was really sad when Camp Upstairs shut its doors, but Peter has now teamed up w/ Andrea from Burdock + Harvest to open this killer little wine bar. Super tasty and thoughtful snacks, as well a wine list handpicked by the best sommelier in the province. 10/10 would recommend.

  • Paul Carrobourg

Bar Gobo, fabulous! The limited menu and small setting set the stage for exceptional food and atmosphere, the entire staff delivered an experience. The menu is great for family style sharing, the burrata and tuna tartare are necessary for a starters! Well done, BG!

This place is a gem. My friend and I came for drinks and appetizers and we had a wonderful time. Really terrific service, very knowledgeable staff, excellent food and an outstanding wine selection. Not to mention a very generous serving of burrata. We’ll be back!

Love this place. Such interesting flavours and seasonal food! The portions are on the smaller side so you may want to add on. The wines are also delightful. Highly recommend

Pricey and small wine list. Had a couple appies and they ranged from bad to mediocre. Slow service. Not a great patio. Not worth a visit in my opinion.
