I wish I found these guys earlier. Unfortunately, I was too confident about my ability to train myself, using my own intuition and internet researching. But at some point I think you have to accept that the experts know what they are doing. You simply can't replicate what they can give you (in so many ways - the motivation, the enjoyment, the wisdom and advanced progressive training methodologies)... Especially if you are a busy person. It might be a little bit more expensive (though it's less than one-on-one sessions would be, and you get a huge amount of personal attention!), but if you are interested in having a functional, strong body for as much of your lifespan as possible, it is absolutely worth it. If you can possibly afford it, I would, without a shadow of doubt, recommend that you give this gym a try. You will feel so much better. I did. Honestly, I have started doing things I thought I would never be able to do due to injuries, my own bodily quirks and general wear and tear. Best in the business that I have seen.

A few weeks in to my time at Benchmark, one of the trainers got in touch to ask if I'd be happy to write a review. "Of course!" I responded. "After I see some results!" I added. And after noting my new shoulders and arms this morning, feeling the strength in my legs, and knowing how much my form has improved from the team's expert guidance, that time has come. I'd been doing Stronglifts 5x5 on and off and by myself for about 18 months when I decided to give Benchmark a try. I was unmotivated and wary of musculoskeletal niggles that were starting to emerge. From the first assessment of my biomechanics to the class I completed this morning, the experience has been superb. The team pays attention to the needs of each individual, creates an environment that encourages us to do our best (without hurting ourselves), and designs programmes that keep us right at the edge of our capacity and, therefore, building it. I can't recommend this place more highly. Come and join the gang!

James and Mitch are not just personal trainers, they know their stuff - they are passionate, knowledgeable and experienced in functional movement and training, nutrition, science, meditation and breathing- you name it, they know it! Their love for what they do is evident in the way they operate the gym and how they treat their clients, going above and beyond to help each individual achieve their goals, whatever they may be. We are very lucky to have such an amazing facility open up in our area. Signing up to Benchmark Canterbury is the best decision my partner and I have made. Do yourself a favour and at least try it - you won’t regret it!

I used to have to force myself to go to the gym but now it's the highlights of my week! James and Mitch are such passionate and awesome coaches, their synergy is infectious and motivating. I used to go to classes like body combat or body pump but the instructors do not have the capacity to pay attention to my technique in such big classes. Often times I get so sore on my left leg (where I had sport injury) that I had to get out of the class mid-way which not only worsen my injury but also crushed my self-esteem. But at benchmark, the coaches are detailed and you get to improve your technique and posture at your own time with just the right amount of push. You can ask any questions anytime and exercise the right way. Most of the time they correct you before you even ask. It's amazing. I even got my husband to join and he loves it (he had back injury from weight lifting). You guys are doing such an amazing job! Keep it up ;)

This is a new type of gym that has opened in Canterbury. The owners have designed an innovative approach to athletic development though a series of 50-min group training sessions. After initial screening, you begin with foundation and accelerate classes, and then progress to condition, fortitude and benchmark classes. If you are looking for a training facility /gym that offers something different then this place is worth checking out. Overall, I enjoy coming here and find the class sizes small and the exercises challenging! The equipment is really excellent; the app makes it easy to book into classes; and the trainers give good feedback throughout the sessions. For me, the accelerate class really offer something different (held outdoors in the park across the river) that I never had access to at previous gyms. High Recommended *****

Fantastic institution as a brain child of two genuinely passionate and experienced Trainers. Mitch and James sets the 'benchmark' high for the gym and fitness industry. Every training movements are with a purpose and sports-science backed. They set the weekly and periodical training programs so you dont have to do the thinking, planning or be swayed by social media fad. Every session is like a class not only for you to work out but also to re-educate everything you thought you knew about working out. Mitch and James are surely setting you up for success for your long term health and fitness journey. 110% community feel with friendly supportive Coach and peers. Mitch, James and Michael are so friendly and supportive! Their knowledge on form and technique has really given me the confidence to challenge myself more and I have already seen a huge improvement in just 5 months. They are so genuinely happy for everyone when they achieve a new goal and they have created a great community of people who support one another! Whether you're a new or regular gym goer, they will help you to adapt each exercise to get the most out of every session. Our training is also in 4-6 week blocks which gives it consistency but also keeps things interesting! I really can't thank you all enough, I have enjoyed every minute and look forward to coming every day!

Benchmark Canterbury is hands down one of the best gym/training grounds I have attended. Mitch and James take a knowledgeable and personal approach to their clientele, methods and excerise routine. Great for anyone who has suffered an injury in the past and needs that confidence to get back in the game. Mitch and James also take the time to teach you the right movement to maximise results ans aviod injuries. They also take the time after sessions to work on areas that may pain you to help you build a strong foundation around it. Hands down the best training I've ever done! Mitch and James have a combined knowledge -base and practical experience that makes this gym unlike any other. I have played semi-professional rugby league and trained as an amateur boxer, so I'm used to hard training sessions, but what blows me away every time I train at Benchmark is the level of specificity and detail in every workout. Proper form and mobility is at the core of every movement. I'm getting unprecedented results and the guys really invest in my development. I feel supported, encouraged and most of all inspired every time I train at Benchmark. Cannot recommend highly enough!

James and Mitch run a quality gym, with a great community atmosphere and a strong focus on proper form. In each class a significant portion of time is spent on stretching and breathing exercises, and there are no mirrors or machines, which is very different from the other big franchise gyms. Despite being classes, it's more like having personal training sessions, as there is constant constructive and positive encouragement from James and Mitch. In just 3 months of attending, I'm now able to sit cross-legged for extended periods of time, something I haven't been able to do since Paul Keating was PM!

It's easy to find a gym close to station with new equipments and very clean, but not easy to find extremely professional and passionate coaches who are so good at what they do. Classes are well designed and fun (warm-up, work-out, work out and breathing to finish in 50mins).The class size are quite small (max 12 ppl,Avg 3-5ppl) that allows coaches pay attentions to individual trough out the class. A place will make your money well spent- paying a gym price but get Personal Trainer results! Benchmark Canterbury please keep up with the great work-I highly recommend you to everyone.

It can be quite challenging to find the perfect gym. However, after exploring numerous gyms in the south inner west area of Sydney, I discovered that Benchmark is definitely worth considering. Their programs are exceptional, the trainers and owners are remarkable, and most importantly, it delivers results! The gym boasts a fantastic atmosphere with a friendly vibe, where everyone supports and benefits from their services. I truly hope that Benchmark expands its presence across Sydney because it truly is an outstanding gym. Mitch and James hands down your gym is Number 1

I have never been a gym person, and certainly not a morning gym person but Mitch and James have created an exercise experience that really works and keeps you motivated beyond the initial sign-up period. I was nervous as I had never really done weights before but within a short space of time I felt part of the crew. You see the same people each week and everyone is super supportive, friendly and motivated. Mitch and James absolutely know their stuff and their personal investment in your goals and achievements shines through. I cannot recommend this gym enough.

I highly recommend this gym as Mitch and James take a personal approach to each individuals training needs and goals. The small classes are virtually a one on one training session with two well trained and highly experienced instructors - these guys know their stuff. It doesn't matter what level you are at your needs will be met, if you have an injury that will be catered for in each session. After over a year I stand by my comments and encourage people to check these guys out I am 58 and still enjoy going each week.

This is without a doubt the best gym/training facility I have ever been a part of. Mitch and James have such a comprehensive understanding of strength and conditioning training and have developed a unique and effective training system. They are experts in imparting their knowledge to the clients so they can take ownership of their own health and fitness. I have lost a solid amount of weight and gained noticeable muscle mass in the past 2 months I have been attending. Couldn’t recommend it more!

Best gym I’ve been to. I used to hate the gym because I had no motivation, it’s overwhelming and I never know what exercises to do. But 6 months of going to Benchmark and I now love it! As a bonus, I am also much more confident in lifting heavier weights. James and Mitch are knowledgeable, friendly, super helpful and genuinely cares about their client’s goals and achievements. I have trained at this gym for 7 months and the experience is great. I always hate gym but James and Mitch are always supportive, funny and positive. I have gained a lot from this and I would definitely continue my training with them when I move back to Canterbury. I always hate gym but my experience with them for last 7 months changed my perception about what gym can really be. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to exercise but cant find motivation to continue the training.

I've been going to the Gym for the last few weeks and I have to say - Benchmark is amazing! I've done a LOT of fitness sessions at various gyms in both fitness classes and PT sessions, and Benchmark really stands out for me! Mitch and James are constantly watching, correcting and perfecting our techniques. I'm usually really prone to injury, which often means I have to stay away from sessions to heal, but with these guys I can tell them what's up and they'll actively help me to stabilise and even helped me heal quicker through technique. This studio is fantastic. I’ve been going about a month and genuinely think this is one of the best studios in Australia. As an ex PT, I am fairly sceptical when finding a gym, but glad I found these guys. The programming is very very good, where intensity matches great structure. The gang at Benchmark Canterbury are great! They run group training classes and ensure that each attendee gets individual attention throughout the various exercises that are set on the day. They're also great with following up with you if you have any questions, or if you happen to miss a session. Awesome gym with the best trainers. James and Mitch have helped me correct poor posture and technique and I am already starting to see results recovering from a previous shoulder injury in 1 month and have done more to help me than any of the physio's, chiro's and osteo's have done in the past.
