I genuinely don't understand why the whole library forbids bringing your jacket, your bag, your water and your snacks. Instead of secluding study spaces where such items may be brought along and between study spaces where they may not be brought along, the whole library forbids it. I think that it is quite irrational as different people study differently, i.e. water/snacks which are actually necessary while studying and needing energy. Not to mention people with gastrointestinal issues. Including limited working hours from 10AM till 8PM. And lastly, if they propose to study in LLC in Belval (because food and snacks are actually allowed!) you will need more than one hour to reach it from Kirchberg. I expected more from Luxembourg's National Library. EDIT: I understand the aspect of preservative action to maintain literal heritage, however the BNL is associated with the University of Luxembourg in Kirchberg and should at least be offering accommodating study spaces for their students, given that the University itself does not provide for study spaces for students. And arguing that we should go to Belval is simply a pure hassle for many students as you loose time on transport. If at least shuttle buses were organised between the two building.

The building is very pretty and the facilities are very nice. There are many tables to work at, and the group study rooms are useful when I want to come with a friend. I come here every day to study because of construction work where I live and I'm glad that Luxembourg has such a nice building. My main issue is that the staff don't enforce silence — people leave their phones on ringer, or worse, have loud phone conversations (I overheard one man read out his credit card information!), and very rarely does anyone get told off. People also bring children and babies, and while I have nothing against children being in the reading room, I wish the adults with them would take them outside when they make noise. I also wish the opening hours catered more to the people who use the space. It would be nice if it were open on Mondays, or if it opened at 9am as opposed to 10am. There are often people in the café before 10, just waiting for the reading room to open. Overall, it's not an unpleasant place to be, but I think it has the potential to be a much nicer environment for the students and researchers who use it.

As others have mentioned, due to the early closing and late opening times, the library is often rendered useless to those that need a quiet study or work space the most. Opening times must at minimum be 09:00 to 21:00 or 22:00. Having shorter opening times is explicit negligence to the population, particularly for students, which often do not have any other quiet place to study. Also, I understand the need to preserve the collection, but having to fully move your belongings to retrieve your water bottle or water fountain on the outside area is disruptive and promotes dehydration. It is never safe to leave all of your belongings unattended, and this should not be said as an excuse. Libraries in other EU countries solve this by having an indicated separation where no books are allowed to be brought (either to certain tables or to an entire section), so that you can sit peacefully with your belongings/computer and have water.

Beautiful, modern and spacious library. Books are available in Luxembourgish, German, French and English. Membership is for free, available for residents and non residents (cross border commuters) to apply. The application process is straightforward and quick. Staff are friendly and helpful. Good security provided with coded lockers (tip: don’t forget your code and your locker number). We are not allowed to bring our bags and belongings in the library but will be provided a basket to grab what we need to get in. Unfortunately, drinks are forbidden which is quite inconvenient (perhaps it would be an idea to install a designated beverage/ drinking area with water fountain inside the library?). There is a piano room on the second floor that we can booked via an online system. There is also a family room allowing parents to read and play with their children without disturbing others.

Needed to do my assignment while visiting Luxembourg and this place was one of the best libraries I've been to across the world. Stunning modern design without being bland, a range of textures, details, lighting and materials used to make the space beautiful. Thoughtfully designed with free lockers to store bags and coats, toilets, a water fountains and a café. Plenty of spaces to study and work, desks are modern with sockets and reading light. Free WiFi available without having to register. No babies or young kids meant it was very quiet and without distractions. You are not allowed to bring jackets or bags inside but are provided with baskets to carry your belongings around the library. Staff regularly cleaning desks and the space means it's clean and welcoming. The tram is right Infront of the library, it couldn't be easier.

I discovered this library last Autumn and have been visiting consistently ever since. It's such a comfortable place to work, there are many seating options and the collections are reasonably sized. It's also very easy to access with the tram. The carrels are rooms that you can book for a designated time frame to work alone or in groups and I tried out one of them for an interview: the experience was very pleasant (booking and using the room). It's super easy to spend the whole day there to work or read and the Wifi access and many many seating options make it easy to do so. The Njord cafe also makes it easy to spend extra time there! I also very much enjoy the locker system at the entrance, it keeps the library very clean and quiet so props to that. I would recommend to anyone really! And I'll be visiting many more times

My favorite place to work and do research. Very quiet and calm spaces to focus and be productive. I especially like how easy it is to book reading rooms and workspaces for groups needs. The staff is really kind and always willing to help. I like the architecture of the whole building, how it is lit and the giant void in the center lets you have a great view of the whole library be it from the 3rd floor or the ground floor. What is really amazing is you can have your membership card within minutes and off you go to enjoy your time and it's ALL FREE! The one thing I personally wish for, is it would have been great if opening hours were a bit extended till 10:00PM or at least 9:00PM. Thank you and wishing you continuous success!

Very nice library, with lots of space, always clean. The locker system works well. Unfortunately it is very loud for studying. Many people speak in normal tones instead of whispering, and because it is completely open space you can hear everything and there is lots of echo. You can even hear the staff at the counter when people come up to them, which I of course understand is their job, it's just annoying that the noise goes into the main room because there is no proper separation. I have had to buy ear plugs otherwise I cannot concentrate properly.

The Luxembourgish authorities and the management of the BNL PUT TO RISK the well-being of their visitors. It is absolutely unheard of that bringing a water bottle with you to a library is prohibited. What is a visitor gets dehydrated and faints? Banning water is health-endangering!!!! I am SHOCKED by how this simple fact about human biology never occurred to the management. BNL is a public library, and it is a shame to see that they use our taxes money so carelessly

Great place to study. Very modern place. Mystery however remains, why cannot you even bring a water there...preservation of books is not really an argument as other places with unbelievable collections of books have much more liberal policy. Its just a water guys, so relax and dont be pedantic…you are not Oxford. Also, opening hours are very short compared to other places. Such a waste for such a beautiful place. #water #openinghours

I needed a place to study and found this library. For me it is a great place to study due to the fact that it has many comfortable seats and many desks. The only downside is that if you want to find a seat later in the day especially on weekdays it can be very busy and it will be hard to find a seat. If you want to lease books you must sign up for a library card (which is completely free) the card is not needed to access the library.

Cela me semble discriminatoire.

This is my favorite place yet in Luxembourg, the staff are super friendly they all speak English, everyone who is at the library are so engulfed in their own work, reading so there is no disturbance. There are lockers to put your belongings. Please have all your gadgets on silent mode and let everyone enjoy their time like you would expect.

Luxembourg moved its National Library to a completely new and magnificent building on the Avenue J.F.Kennedy. There is a tram stop in front of the library, which makes access easy. The inside is modern with plenty of light. The infrastructure to search for and consult books, audio, video and music scores is simply excellent.

This library is a haven for book lovers and avid learners. The aesthetic appeal is captivating, creating an ideal atmosphere for focused studying. The extensive collection of books in various languages adds to its charm, making it a perfect destination for those who appreciate diverse literary treasures.

To start with, the walk itself to the library is relaxing and peaceful. Spacious and quiet place to work. Also there are tables near the glass windows for people preferring light. There are cubicles if you need lone space. The staff is friendly too.

Nice place to study but closed on MONDAYS?? and opening at 10?? That's how you know it's not a private but public luxemburgish library. That's a shame and a wast for such a big library. Then you are not allowed to have even a bottle of … Plus

Excellente.

Such a nice place to study and read! I wish it’s open on Sundays too for people need to work on weekdays! I saw the comments that the library is reviewing the opening hours. Any idea when there will be an update?
