While visiting Jacksonville, we decided to go to Bistro Aix for a birthday celebration. The menu looked very good and it had high ratings based on a fairly large number of reviews. Parking was not a problem. We were having a late lunch and there was parking on the street near the restaurant. As we had hoped, the late time for lunch (l:45) meant the restaurant was not very crowded. The restaurant was still open and we were quickly greeted and sat in a comfortable booth. The dinner menu is more extensive than the luncheon menu. That is not unusual but, as luck would have it, not everything on the luncheon menu was available either. The crab cakes ordered as an appetizer were small but there were three of them and they were very good. The sweet potato soup was the soup of the day. Two of us ordered that and it was outstanding—smooth, creamy and with a delightful flavor. The short ribs were on the menu and sounded excellent and the server recommended the dish. Unfortunately, that dish was not available. I opted for the steak frites. It was accompanied by haricot vert (green beans and french fries). The steak was cooked medium rare, as ordered, and was tender and flavorful. The beans were still crunchy, not boiled to ruin the natural flavor and texture) and the fries were a little too salty but tasted very good and cooked perfectly. My two dining companions ordered the snapper fish special which was accompanied by asparagus and brussel sprouts. The first order of fish was very salty and the person who ordered it does not care for food that is heavily salted. Our server, Marina, was very accomodating and ordered another snapper dish as a replacement. It was not salted and cooked perfectly. The other diner was not as sensitive to salty food and enjoyed the snapper and the side dishes very much. For dessert I selected a berry almondine with vanilla ice cream that was to be served warm. As it turned out, that dish was no longer available as it had sold out. I opted for the tuxedo chocolate cake which was outstanding and had a beautiful presentation. (See the accompanying photo.) It was delicious and, as the name implies, had a strong chocolate flavor with whipped cream and strawberries on the side. All three of us enjoyed the cake and it was quickly consumed. Moreover, as I had noted on the reservation that this was a birthday celebration, there was no charge for the birthday cake dessert. There is an extensive wine list by the bottle. As is usually the case, the "by the glass" list of options is considerably more restricted. There is still a good variety of wine available by the glass. I deferred a bottle as driving through Jacksonville traffic can be a challenge and settled for one excellent glass of cabernet to accompany the steak frites. Our server was very good and made sure everything was taken care of. Marina was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and her attention to detail made the occasion more enjoyable. Bistro Aix was an enjoyable experience and worth a visit. I would prefer the more elaborate menu for the evening meal but the items we selected were delicious. The biggest disappointment, which was quickly remedied, was the heavily salted fish entree which is somewhat unusual for a high end restaurant. All of the selections were well prepared, flavorful, and contributed to a happy birthday family celebration.

I very seldom write reviews, but after our experience here I feel compelled to inform others and the management here that I am deeply disappointed in what used to be one of Jacksonville’s best restaurants. My husband and I went here for my birthday dinner (our usual San Marco spots were booked up and my husband was scrambling to find a place for us to go). My friend asked us where we were going and I told her. As a surprise, she called the restaurant beforehand and asked if she could bring a cake that would be brought out after dinner. They agreed, and she drove from the beach to deliver the cake before our dinner. Now to the food, I ordered the short rib and it came out cold. I informed the server, and she was apologetic and returned it to the kitchen. She returned about 15 minutes later and the meal was SCALDING hot. I had to cut up the entire piece of meat and let it cool down on the plate for around 10 minutes before I could even touch it. My husband’s entree was over-salted and mediocre. The only high point of the meal was the French onion soup. At this point my husband had finished his entree. Our server returned and asked how my meal was and I told her I could not eat it due to the heat. She apologized and offered a free drink or dessert. We asked to see the dessert menu. Our server did not return for another half hour. We asked another waiter to please find her, because at this point we were ready to go. She offered a “complimentary dessert,” not mentioning the cake, and we declined because we were fed up at this point. She then gave us the check, and we left. On our way home, we both said we were disappointed in the food and the service; however, we were not expecting what came next. At 10 pm someone from the restaurant called my husband and nonchalantly told him there was a cake for me “they forgot to bring out.” This staff member did not apologize or offer to “make it right.” My husband told them we live 5 minutes from the restaurant, and would someone please drop it off. They said they would speak to a manager and “get back to us”. No one “got back to us,” and I picked up my cake 2 days later, as the restaurant was closed the next day. When I arrived, again no manager apologized or offered to “make it right.” I called the owner, and told him of my experience. He apologized and offered a “bottle of Prosecco and a $50 gift card.” A week passed, and I heard nothing. I then emailed the owner and the manager (at this point I did not care to return the restaurant again, but it was a “matter of principle” to me). Another week has passed and I have heard nothing back from the owner or the manager. Only after this am I writing this review. I was a server all through my college years, so I understand how things can get chaotic at times, but this customer service experience was one of the worst I received. I now understand why the restaurant was barely half full at 7pm on a Saturday night. We will not return, and we informed several of our friends of our experience here. Save your money and go to Taverna, Rue, or Townhall.

To start the service was wonderful. Jesse our server had such a great attitude, Rose another server was also taking care of us by continuing to provide us with anything extra we could ask for and Mike the chef did fantastic in the kitchen. The calamari had a delicious garlic wine sauce which I ended up soaking up with the fluffy tomato focaccia they provide. The scallop with risotto great. The scallops were most definitely fresh and the risotto was so creamy and perfect cooked. The duck special of the day just merged so well together. The wine reduction, mushrooms, foie gras, duck, and white bean purée all paired so well together. Then this place truly shines with the desserts we ordered. The creme brûlée was perfectly set with a truly amazing crust with the perfect amount of char. Then my favorite most definitely has to be the blueberry lemon mint panna cotta. The panna cotta was a light blueberry and vanilla topped with a blueberry mint sauce and a lemon whipped cream I believe. It was also garnished with strawberries and mint and when you combine a little bit of everything in one bite you end up in heaven. I will be dreaming about the panna cotta for the foreseeable future wishing I could have it again. Too bad we are just visiting the city. Great place would come again.

Okay, this happy hour is in the top five of my lifetime favorites, and I travel for a living! The happy hour food items (weekdays, you must sit in the bar area, not the main restaurant) are good sized servings of amazing food. And the wine and beer prices for this time period are great-the wine was particularly wonderful as the best house wine I've encountered. We had enough food to take home and have a second meal (yes, from the happy hour menu!). The staff was extremely friendly-we walked into the wrong side of the restaurant, were seated, and when I asked about they happy hour menu we were changed to the correct area graciously and kindly. No one made us feel uncomfortable for the mistake and the kindness continued with the bartender who was great and helpful with the menu. He told us how impressive the food items were and he was correct. Make it a point to go during their weekday happy hour times, but I also think the kitchen must crank out some great food on the restaurant side as well if the treats we had are at all representative. Nice vibe, great food, friendly people-a real gem of a spot we would visit weekly if we lived in Jacksonville.

First and foremost I would just like to say the bartender DJ was awesome and this review reflects nothing on him. The whole experience of this restaurant is awful. The first time I came to this restaurant was during lunch hour. We sat down ordered food then waited for an hour and half. Many people were seated after we arrived and their food came out before us. The first time I excused the restaurant for the first mistake. I decided to try this restaurant for a second time and the experience was way worse. This time we had a reservation at 7pm. We arrived at 6:30pm. We decided to go to the bar for their happy hour. The hostess informed us that she will come get us once our table was ready. We started to order appetizers and drinks. The hostess did not come to seat us at our table until 7:55pm. I don't know what it is about this restaurant but the customer service is very poor. I would not recommend this restaurant for service. I would recommend it for drinks and the bar service. Shoutout to Dj. Thank you.

I would first like to say how much I loved the vibes/decor in this restaurant. This is the perfect ambiance for a date night. The staff was very welcoming when entering and leaving the restaurant, but our experience while we were there was by far one of the worst. I’m almost certain our waitress was high..she was very spacey and got our orders wrong. They brought out the wrong entree out for my husband, and when we told them it wasn’t what he ordered, she removed the plate and told us the right dish would be out in 2 minutes. 15-20 minutes later, his dish finally came out, but by then, everyone else had finished their meal. The French onion soup was extremely salty; and although they removed the soup from the bill, it was just the icing on the cake to make this experience an unforgettable one. Definitely won’t be recommending this place which I am pretty disappointed about.

I would say that Bistro Aix has one of the best happy hours in Jax right now. The cocktails and a selected number of appetizers are all $7. Everything is fantastic! If you sit at the bar or anywhere in the back room you are going to have great service. Tom and Taylor are the bartenders I have the most experience with and they are the BEST. I stopped in one time on a whim after not going for years. Now I stop in almost once a week. The mussels are my favorite but the wood fired margherita pizza is yummy as well.

Just letting everyone know that the new owner is definitely stealing money from the servers to whom he employs. He charges 3 percent to them for credit card fees for every transaction that goes on a credit card. For as much as they charge for food I’m appalled that they would charge their service team for customers charging credit cards. Let’s say your bill is 500$ they have to give 15$ to the owner first in top of paying the bar fees and other fees so the servers are getting charged up to 20 percent of their tips just to be able to make half of minimum wage. What a disgrace the owner should feel ashamed to have such a high end establishment and basically finding any way he can to take the employees money on top or making thousands a day from high ticket prices on every meal. The turnover rate is extremely high due to this issue servers beware!!!

  • Isabel Gutierrez

Not a fan of food. Nice ambiance though. Service was good. Ordered as an appetizer the mussels that were on the sweeter side. Ordered Aroncinni appetizer that was cold in the center. They described as homemade mozerrella but they are 3 large balls stuffed with rice?? And a very small tiny mozerrella portion. More like stuffed rice balls. Was brought in error zucchini fries by waitress which was greasy and salty. As an entre had the short rib which was good. Husband had the sea bass over one slice of zucchini that’s all. No other side. After disappointment with the appetizer hoping entre would be great but not really. Just okay. I am one that goes with reviews when trying new places so I thoughId share my experience.

Ambiance: Decent Noise level: High Food: Overall Good. Some caveats: Bijoux De Mer ( Jewels of the Sea) seafood soup cum stew was salty. BTW: The restaurant was out of bread, so none was served! Service: Average. It was the main irking point for our group. Lacked attention to detail & timely responsiveness. Expected to be much better for this type of restaurant & the prices! e.g. No soup spoon provided with the seafood soup. Certainly couldn't have consumed it with a fork & knife! Had to be reminded. No plate provided for empty mussel shells. Again had to be reminded. Had to remind three times to get the table wiped when some water spilled on the table. Hardly any follow up after serving to see how things were going. So overall okay, with less than good value for the $ spent that evening.

I have a gluten allergy and The menu says they can accommodate for gluten free so we decided to try it out. We ordered the calamari gluten free which we were told was sautéed. We received a fried calamari. We asked to make sure it was gf. It wasn’t. They took it back and said they’d bring one that was. Again they brought out a fried calamari. We had it sent back. It took a third time to finally get it sent out sautéed and not with a breading. It was extremely rubbery. I order the chicken Gorgonzola which was good but now I’m skeptical if I may have still been glutened. When we finally got our check. They gave us the wrong check. It was a bill for almost 400 dollars when really our meal was only 100

A charming establishment and the food was phenomenal. I had the gnocchi and my partner the bolognese following a selection of fruits and cheeses. Slight service complaint: We made reservations for a Saturday evening and requested a booth in the reservation notes. We were told booths could not be reserved but we could request one. Upon arrival we were shown to a circular booth. I asked if we could be seated at a traditional booth - and was told they were already reserved (even though at another point I was told booths couldn't been reserved). This was odd and a disappointment. All-in-all a nice time.

Can you believe that bistro AIX charges two dollars for ice cubes, frozen water is two dollars in a drink at bistro AIX. I normally drink bourbon on the rocks. I asked for bourbon on the rocks and the bill came, and they charge two dollars for ice in each of my two drinks so it was four dollars for ice for two drinks, when I spoke with the manager, he stated that’s their policy end of story . I just want to put out there if you want to spend two dollars for ice cubes then go to bistro ask and get ice in your drink. A $300.00 bill with $4.00 added for frozen water.

Fortunately, we did not eat here! We went in for a drink at the bar before our dinner elsewhere. It was my birthday and we had time before dinner. My drink was so so. My girlfriend had a gift card with $15 that she wanted to use up. When we went to pay, they declined the gift card since it is under new owners. I do understand the credit was old but for 15.00 an exception should of been made verses telling us to go to the Cowford chop house where the previous owners are at. So, you get a poor review. We will not be back ever, it is that simple. Our dinner at Matthews was fabulous!!! Previous month we had dinner at Cowford’s and it was great!

Girls night out to celebrate the holidays and we met at the newly renovated Bar. Wonderful drinks crafted by Noah. He was very attentive and made our evening! What a fun guy! We had caprese salad, calamari, margarita pizza and mushroom pizza. All wonderful. Atmosphere was fun with music but not too loud so we could hear each other. A huge plus! Most bars are too loud! Wish I had photos of food/drinks to share but was having so much fun didn’t take any. We will be returning! Best kept secret.

Can't say enough about this place. The parking lot across the street definitely helps. I would like to see some new offerings on the menu. Steak Frites has kinda played out. But the Surf and Turf is good. It could use some crab or lobster on it for $50. Just my opinion. I would go to $55 if it had either. EDIT: Thank you for the reply! I will definitely take you up on it.

Feeling real disappointed with our experience last night. My fiancé and I went out last night for our anniversary and the ambiance was wonderful. However I was very disappointed with the food. I got the steak frites ordered medium rare and my fiancé ordered the wahoo special. My steak was over cooked and my fiancé said the fish was disgusting, super fishy. Our server was great and actually took the steak off the bill for us without us even having to say anything. Fast forward to this morning and my fiancé has been sick to his stomach and has been on the toilet all day!

Bistro Aix has been my favorite Jax restaurant for years. Last night however, was a big disappointment. The server was lovely, but obviously had too many tables. 20 minute wait for a bottle of wine. Our food was not well seasoned & the steak frites -my personal fave-was not at all the same. We ordered zucchini fries as an appetizer and they came out as deeply over fried twigs with no recognizable sign of a zucchini. I really hope it was just an off night.

The restaurant has dropped significantly. Aix was a staple of my childhood. I remember the pastry kitchen and fresh oven pizzas. The escargot was fantastic; however, the Niçoise salad came without any Nicoise olives! When we requested the Nicoise olives the server returned with pitted Kalamata olives and insisted that the Niçoise salad only “features hard boiled eggs and green beans after the Niçoise state in France.” The dishonesty went ahead and dropped an additional star. Overall: lackluster.

Waited for 1.5 hours for most of the food for a party of 10, 2 people didn't get their food until everyone else had finished. Ran out of bread so couldn't even make due with that while waiting. Waiters were great trying to accommodate more reservations than the kitchen could handle. OWNER took on way more than staffing could handle. Who runs out of bread? Scallops were out too. Food that did arrive was good, but we were ready to walk out and get pizza. Not happy with our experience.

We went around 4. Got the lunch menu. Ordered pasta Ragu. It was bland & runny. I got the steak frittes. Very small steak it was ok. Mustard sauce fair. Green beans overcooked. French fries tasted funny. I got a 14$ drink that tasted like weak lemonade. Have eaten here many times so I was very disappointed it did not meet my expectations. I would not post a review normally but this was a 98$ lunch that was not very good

Our server, Serena, was so helpful and in general super great! Our appetizers were tasty, the Tartines were yummy but the bread was really crunchy, the crispy calamari and shrimp was the best part! Super tasty and everything went well together, the little salad on the side was kind of strange though for the looks I can understand it. Our steak frites was okay, the steak and green beans NEEDED salt, it was kind of sweet and the steak was cooked nicely, and the frites were a great texture.

This place has great atmosphere and drinks, but most of all it's food !! I ordered scallops and salmon; and, wow!!! Food in small pieces that pack large windmill kicks to the face, even Bruce Lee would be proud. The scallops perfectly seared on once side, sweet salty, moist, paired with mushrooms broccoli was exquisite. The salmon was moist and flavorful, no lingering of unexpected flavors just clean and tasty. The dessert was decadent, smooth and just enough to make you want more, even though you are beyond full.

Catastrophe Booked directly with restaurant for a special family dinner. We had tickets for a concert. 2 hours after arrival and and hour after order was taken we did not have our meal so had to leave for the theater. Still got charged $80 for 2 cocktails and 3 glasses of wine. This place will not survive with this level of service. All around us we saw food being sent back

Excellent dinner tonight. Service is top notch & the food was delicious. A nice variety of wine to choose from. The Escargot was as good as advertised! Yellow snapper was terrific!! Perfectly prepared. The Cioppino was delicious with lots of tasty morsels. The sauce was very tasty as were the shrimp & fish. Dessert: the crembulee was perfect! Thanks Imad for making the evening special.. BTW: safe place to relax & dine! Please support this iconic place!!

This was my first visit back since they reopened after the storm and I was pleasantly surprised. The decor is different than how it’s been in the past, but I love what they’ve done. The open kitchen is still my favorite. I love seeing a kitchen in action. We had the duck, the chicken, and the short rib. Everything was prepared wonderfully, but my short rib was the winner! It was delicious! I look forward to my next visit!

  • Bochita S

This place has a nice environment. We have a big party and they provided a nice table for us. They don’t have a big selection on their menu, and happy hour ends at 7pm. Their appetizers taste ok, not so impressive. HOWEVER their entrees are delicious. I tasted the short ribs lamb and scallops. Scallops and risotto are the best! Dessert tasted nice as well and I ordered the lemon tart. Service is friendly. Will be back!

This spot has always been a favorite of mine, but it is not at all what it used to be. The onion soup, mushroom pizza, steak frites... not one of them as good as they used to be. The (paper) menu, food selections and wine list (esp. by the glass) are lacking.

Our server was excellent. The food was not exactly what I'd call french inspired. Just nothing there that would drive me to come back. Perhaps it was due to the New Years Eve menu. The cocktails are a D-. More

It was my first time and the service was amazing. The food was so good. The aix marks the spot was my my favorite but the pork belly was crispy, Smokey and, good. I will definitely have to come back

Creme brûlée here was so tasty!!! unlike the flat bread, it’s more of a regular pizza than a flat bread.. I got mushroom one, it came out too salty. Will come back for dine in to try out more (:

We were not disappointed, food was good, small menu which is usually a good sign. Downside is the "French" influence which is really limited and artificial.
