There is so much to avoid, to be wary or cautious of in our lives today that one almost needs a rule book to play the game of life with. More specifically, the bromide that says "do not discuss religion or politics with your friends if you want them to remain your friends" holds more water now than ever. So it came as we were sitting in the Bud Jones dining room being waited on by the sweetest, most polite elderly lady that has ever graced the ranks of the service industry. As we sat there she unexpectedly addressed the topic first and was making a full unadulterated disclosure of facts with an opinion or two thrown in for effect. We couldn't believe it. As she finished we thought wisely of placing our order as quickly as possible before we were overcome with the sheer honesty and exuberance of her thoughts and the conviction of her opinions. We reserved the right to be rather skeptical at that point. With all the news about politics, Covid, restaurant openings and closings, she returned with our food and we thought it possible that the conversation would return to the previous topic. That elephant in the room loomed intimidatingly large before us as we finished our appetizer and she returned with our meals. I'll be gol darned if she wasn't right on the money with what she had opined. The chicken fried steak led before us (this thing was big enough that you had to lead it rather than serve it) had to be as big as the foot pad of a bull elephant! [Had ya goin' didn't I?!] Ogling a watering hole sized dose of gravy ladeled over the steak and mashed potatoes that cupped even more gravy looking like a crater lake, we understood now about the restaurant's claim to the biggest CF in San Antonio. Biggest or not, this beef wagon wheel was all tenderized steak and if it doesn't take care of your chuck wagon sized appetite at least twice over as you cut off bite after bite with no noticeable indentation, you are a far better man than I. One more side comes with the CF plate and green beans was a natural, if not expected, choice. But the flavor of those beans mounding out of a cafeteria type melmac bowl was enough to perk up even the most gravy soaked of taste buds. They were garlic spiced and they were garlicky good. Our stomachs redlined and our bag of styros weighing in at pounds not ounces, we were happy to have braved the slings and arrows of outrageous portions and Covid bucky balls and will be back to try the cheese enchiladas that are also supposed to be of some renown for their size. Along with all-you-can-eat fish and all-you-can-eat spaghetti, Bud's plainly annihilates hunger. Time for a nap!

Omg they have massive chicken fried steaks. Onion rings are huge!!! And guy's I was totally blown away on the enchiladas. They alsoooooo have breakfast and it was Saturday at noon when i went. They have tvs with the games on great spot for coaches. They also have private room. A table of 9 will cost ya over 200. ( my wife likes brown gravy on hers) you have a choice of white or brown

It's quite in need of a makeover inside but the food was pretty good and so was the service. My dad really enjoyed the chicken fried steak he ordered and my daughter devoured her burger without saying much so I assumed it was good as well. I got the fried beef cutlets, but I think next time I will get the chicken fried steak as I could tell they weren't hand breaded the way my dad's CFS was. The green beans are delicious, and we both got brown gravy which was homemade and yummy too. The onion rings weren't bad, but nothing special either. I would go back to try other stuff on the menu.

So I want to start off by saying service was AMAZING !! Which makes me feel terrible for leaving the 3 star review. I originally ordered a chicken fried steak but I thought it tasted too chewy, so the manager was kind and replaced my meal with a fish plate. Except the plate was dirty and it grossed me out so they ended up just taking the plate off our tab and my server bought me a slice of cake. I didn’t complain about the plate my fried pickles were on but that plate was also dirty with like buffalo sauce or ketchup. I will say service was good throughout this horrible experience that maybe one day I’d try it again. As far as food goes I can’t say I had a good experience unfortunately. But in today’s experience dining out this place is up there for service everyone was so kind!

Been trying out as many old school SA food places as we can get to. Drove here from medical center at 1245pm today. Service was top notch, Sonya was the best. Great suggestions, very patient and attentive. This place reminded me of walking back into a 70s/80s restaurant, but seriously, a good vibe. Mushrooms and its breading was excellent. Wife had Ladies County Fried Steak (a little too chewy/tough) & I had Shrimp Mate plate. Shrimp breading like all others was really good. Place was pretty steady with business while we ate. Give them a try & you'll find something to eat for everyone

We haven't been there in a while . It was a let down. My husband got the triple decker club . It was very disappointing. The roast beef was tough. It looked like shoe leather. The sandwich didn't have cheese. I thought a club sandwich was supposed to have bacon , ham and cheese with lettuce, tomatoes. My husband brought it to their attention. They didn't offer any discount or even say they were sorry for the experience. He couldn't even chew or bite through it , it was so tough. Well we won't be going back . The fried mushrooms were fantastic, the ladies chicken fried steak was good. We didn't realize that we had an automatic gratuity for our party of 6 so we tipped another 20% on top of the 17% they already charged us so our server made almost $40 off of us. We were trying to figure out later why our bill was so high and realized it was an automatic gratuity. That should have been mentioned when the bill was laid on the table.

We rented out this backroom for a gathering. The service & food were great. The condition of that room was run down, the chairs had tears on them. The flooring looked horrible & dirty. Even though we decorated and slightly improved the room, it would have been so much nicer had some upkeeping been done to it. The owners should really consider remodeling these "party" rooms.

This is an old establishment that has been around at the same location serving San Antonionians for generations. The location is easy to get to. The service was excellent. Decided to give them a try after hearing they had the largest chicken fried steak in the area. The portions were amazing but the food was absolutely tasteless. I've never seen country gravy before without pepper and there didn't seem to be any spices in the breading for the country fried steak. Servers seem to be generally inattentive. Although that seems to be a post-COVID issue pretty much everywhere.

It's been 20 years since I've eaten here. Thought I take my kids since they've never been. Well to start the service was excellent. Very attentive waitress and everyone was friendly and smiling. The food portions were huge but the food lacked flavor. My chicken fried chicken was very rubbery. I was literally gnawing on it. My daughter's all you can eat fish was already turning bad. Or just tasted that way. The coleslaw was lacking flavor too. I wish I could say something better but the food was very disappointing.

This is an old established restaurant that I've been visiting for years. Food is very good and the staff is always friendly. Everything I've tried has always been great but my favorites are the chicken fried steak and the large beef enchiladas. Be warned, the portions are large. They have a large dining area and plenty of parking. It's always a treat going to Bud Jones for dinner.

I think they have great deals on fish. Fish was alright. I got some chicken fried steaks that weren't so hot. The lack of flavor in the batter and the steaks had no seasoning or flavor to it. The fried catfish was pretty good. The mashed potatoes aren't homemade and the green beans are nothing special. The carrot cake is an embarrassment to cakes worldwide. It's dry and not good. Our overall experience was fine but unfortunately I won't be looking for reasons to go back.

All the staff members are very nice. Our waitress came to us multiple times asking if everything was satisfactory and if we needed anything. The food tasted great and they serve an ample amount of each item. We ALWAYS end up bringing leftovers home with us. Mary our waitress was very friendly. She continued to check on us to make sure if we needed anything else. I ordered the ladies special. Hubby ordered the sausage steak. Forgot to take pictures of our plates. In my opinion the hashbrowns were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of crispy browns with the cooked ones. The french toast had a cinnamon flavor to them which made them delicious.

First time out since the pandemic Had a great time with family. Never, have I been disappointed at Bud Jones. Food was great the company of family was a blessing. Our server Pam, was attentive, kept our drinks filled and got our food out in a timely manner. She is AWESOME. THANK YOU PAM. The food and the service we get from Pam IA the reason we keep going back. Again, a great experience was had.

Love this old school restaurant for Work lunch. It has been around since 1950’s. I haven’t seen the music machine for a long time. It is so cool ! We ordered broiled fish plate and fried fish plate. They are delicious! The place needs some renovation, buy keeping the original style is unique too.

The restaurant smelled of mildew. I ordered catfish, and got some other type of fish, and it tasted of fish oil. It was inedible. The servers however were excellent!!!

I've been going to bud Jones for years. I went there today and ordered the pot roast. I was very disappointed. It didn't look right and the meat was tough and dry. I know not to order that again. Cause I know everything else is good. And our waitress was so nice and attentive. Great service!

The service was very slow but the worst part was as soon as we walked in, there was an awful smell, like sewage backup. Not sure if this is usual, but there's no way I could stay and eat there. Needless to say, I didn't eat there.

Chicken fried steak was tough and tasteless. Chicken strips tasted like they were fried in old grease. Mashed potatoes tasted like they came out of a box. Very disappointed.

We ordered the chicken fried chicken was a big plate couldn’t finish it. Brian was very friendly he was out waiter. We wi come back again thank you. They need more desserts was hoping for a tres leches cake but they had none.

Service was fast, workers were nice and prices were not to bad. The only problem i had was that the bacon was near raw and the chicken fried stake was floppy. Either from that, they had amazing mushrooms.
