I will preface this with, this was me giving this place a second chance after 5+ years. I used to love it here when i was younger, and we had one very bad experience that had caused me to vow to never return. That time, we went the day after valentines day. Our food came before our soup and salads, and literally everything, even the bread and baked potato were charcoal burnt.. i chalked that up to post holiday burn out for the staff and was just not going to risk throwing money away there again because at that time in our lives, $50+ per person for one meal was a huge luxury, and i didn't want to risk wasting it like that again. So, this visit was not near a major holiday, and the place wasn't overly busy. Here's our take on it this time. The prime rib portion was a bit giant for us. Had we known how big it actually was(portion sizes were not specified for most of the steaks), we probably would have split it. To be honest, for the size of the steak, it really ought to have a larger plate to accommodate actually cutting and eating the meat. It was admittedly some of the best prime rib I've ever had. Unfortunately, as good as it was freshly prepared, leftovers kept very poorly. Reheated slowly the next day, it tasted like pot roast. The french onion soup was incredibly salty, and the aus jus shared a remarkable similarity to said soup. Bread and other sides were just kinda meh. The environment doesn't exactly lend itself to a quiet/private romantic experience in my opinion. I seem to remember a different ambiance from when i went here when i was much younger.. but maybe something changed.. or my standards.. who knows.. the smaller area right in front of the hostess area looks a little quieter with better lighting.. so that could be it. The experience was definitely better than the last one I had years ago when i vowed i would never return. However, we did go through 6 menus before we gave up on them giving us some without sticky food/fingerprints all over them (those pictured are the two we settled on accepting and moved on from) and the food aside from the steak was simply lacking.. Despite the amazing prime rib, I did find myself regretting not going elsewhere on our evening out without the kids (which rarely happens for us-- both a kid free night, and buyer's remorse).

Despite being seated in a booth, we felt crowded. The tables in the center of the room felt incredibly close to us and the whole room was quite loud. They clearly aren't cleaning their menus well between guests, nor did they exhibit any concern or care to fix the issue when it was brought to their attention.

We were celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary and chose to give a new restaurant a try. When we arrived it took 15 minutes to be seated even with a reservation. Then it took another 15 minutes to get a drink which were brought to us in styrofoam cups (at no time during our time here were they swapped out with their glass cups everyone else had.) We ordered our appetizers when we ordered the drinks and it took 30 minutes for those to arrive, 20 minutes in we had to ask another waiter for bread since none was brought. When our appetizers came the lobst Our dining experience left much to be desired. When our appetizers arrived, the lobster voodoo was undercooked and mushy, though the shrimp was quite delicious. Unfortunately, our main courses, a steak and prime rib, took an additional 45 minutes, if not an hour, to reach our table. Both were served cold, with the fat on the side even colder, as if it had been taken directly from the fridge. The single bite I managed to take was disappointingly bland, and it appeared as if the steak had been boiled rather than grilled. Our dissatisfaction led us to inform the waitress, and we promptly requested our check, returning the food. We did appreciate that we were not charged for the dishes we had eaten, and we would have gladly paid for them and left a tip despite the subpar service. She came back and simply said “You can go” no apologies or anything. Nevertheless, this experience fell well below our expectations. Throughout the two hours we spent at the restaurant, our waitress only came to our table a total of five times, and each interaction felt rushed. In stark contrast, the surrounding tables seemed to be receiving more attentive service. Guests who arrived after us were served their steaks promptly, accompanied by proper drink refills and the enthusiasm one would expect from a steakhouse. We had initially looked forward to trying a new restaurant but left feeling highly disappointed. We couldn't help but think we would have had a more satisfying dining experience at our regular spot, Ruth's Chris.

First time visiting this place and I was blown away. The bread they brought to the table was fresh, warm, and pleasant to chew! The servers worked together to ensure that not only is your drink consistently filled but also will bring out food for one another. The hostess even helped refill waters at multiple tables when she didn’t have new guests coming in! Appetizer wise we started with the shrimp cocktail and it did not disappoint. The cocktail sauce had a nice nasal kick to it (not as strong or as enjoyable as St Elmo’s, but definitely gave it some competition) I ordered the 32 oz Tomahawk with a loaded baked potato. Normally I enjoy my steaks medium but this time around I went with Medium rare. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender as all get out! A nice pink outer layer with a warm red center. It was easy to chew and the seasoning was great even without their added steak topping options. The loaded baked potato was a healthy size and they did not shy away from the cheese or bacon bits. I did not try the soup or the salad but my girl loved them both. People were dressed casually and the atmosphere was quiet and relaxing. I was expecting everybody to be dressed up and the place to be overly refined but it was a casual atmosphere which I enjoyed. A manager took the time to ask us how our meal was going and genuinely cared about our experience. The bill for two adults with appetizer, two main courses and multiple alcoholic beverages and tip totaled $230. Overall this trip was a 5/5 for me, From the teamwork and prompt service displayed by their staff to the amazing food and atmosphere, everything was sublime. I will definitely be returning and Bynum’s has earned a life long fan. I look forward to my next visit. Thank you Bynum’s for providing us with a wonderful birthday dinner to celebrate my girlfriends special day.

We went to Bynum's for our anniversary dinner. Recommendations had come from several people, so we thought we'd give it a try. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to the hype. Upon arrival, our server was pleasant and wished us a happy anniversary. The food, though, was just okay. We didn't think the steak was much better than what you might get at a less expensive steak house. The salad was non descript and the baked potato wasn't hot enough. Through most of our dinner, we were the only people in the restaurant. At one point, a single woman came in. She was seated in a booth across from us. She told the server she knew exactly what she wanted, ordered, and then proceeded to watch some sort of presentation/podcast on her phone with the sound turned up. Neither of the servers seemed to notice. Her server came to her table to bring food, etc, and never said a word. So, we said something to our server. Our server went over to her, asked her to turn it down or off or be reseated. The customer refused. Our server said something to the other server/cook and he just shrugged his shoulders. There is one other thing I thought was weird. Our server asked us if we wanted to see the dessert menu. We were full and also just wanted to get out of the restaurant, so we declined. Then she brings us a piece of cheesecake with Happy Anniversary written in chocolate. That was nice and we ate it, quickly, since we were being forced to listen to whatever the woman was listening to; if we had ordered dessert, we wouldn't have been given a complimentary dessert? We didn't expect anything, but the exchange was odd. I don't get why so many people think this place is so great. We won't be back.

It was our first visit to Bynum's last night. While we were excited to try this well-known Indianapolis establishment, the experience was less than satisfactory. Our service was very basic; our waiter did the bare minimum of service. He never introduced himself and didn't tell us the specials until we asked, for example. He seemed overwhelmed by his section while other servers were turning their tables around us with a cheerful attitude. Not ours! He didn't have any sense of urgency and seemed to be miserable. I got the Prime Rib and my husband got the Ribeye. The meats were excellent! My Prime was cooked perfectly. The au jus for my Prime was bland and tasteless though. I actually thought about getting some more French Onion soup to use as au jus, and would have if our server had been around to ask, because that to me tasted more like how au jus should taste. I ordered saffron rice as my side. It was definitely from a package and was super salty. We each got a small scoop of some weird cranberry/pineapple relish with our dinners which puzzled me because it added nothing to the meals and was actually kind of gross. My husband's Ribeye and baked potato were very good. I'm glad we went to Bynum's just to say we'd been there, but nothing wowed us for the money we spent. I just don't think we were impressed enough to return.

Do yourself a favor and eat a steak from this place. It's quality AND quantity. They also give you bread, salad, and soup! The French onion soup which came with the meal honestly went hard. Also, you should definitely get the honey mustard dressing for your salad. Bread was hot and delicious. I ordered the 8 oz sirloin medium rare, topped with garlic and butter (worth the extra $4), and I absolutely devoured that thing. Juicy, juicy, juicy! The only issues we had were that my table of four had a 7:00 p.m. reservation, but we weren't seated until 7:10 p.m. after I went up to ask the hostess again about it. It was a Saturday night and the place was crazy packed. Also, the wait staff were doing their best -- God bless them-- but we definitely had some things fall through the cracks. They brought us our salads but forgot the bread and soup, so we had to ask for them later on after our meals arrived. They might need more staff for peak hours. Overall, if you like steak and have the money, eat here for a quality meal and a lively atmosphere.

Very underwhelming experience. The atmosphere was very dark. The tables were very cramped and small as well as having uncomfortable seats. I got the worst French Onion soup ive ever had in my life. They brought out a dark and dingy looking small cup of what looked like had been cooked days ago, one tiny piece of "cocktail'' type of bread about the size of a 50 cent piece floating on top with no cheese. The cheese had all fallen to the bottom of the cup and just looked nasty. The flavor was not good. The salad wasnt great either, not very good pieces of lettuce and had just been thrown together with no thought and some nasty dressing on the side - looked like it came out of a bag you can buy at Kroger. The baked potato was miniature, almost an afterthought. Even the bread was underwhelming. I got the prime rib and that was the only good thing about the meal even though it was a bit tough and it was Med rare to Rare in the middle. The servers seemed like they didnt wanna be there and their service reflected that. I can say ive been here once, but I wont be back thats for sure. Too many better steak places for the money. Gave 2 stars because the steak wasnt terrible.

Last date night with my husband before he’s off for a year long tour in Saudi Arabia and was the worst choice of restaurants. The atmosphere was nice and the waitress was phenomenal, but the food was nothing to write home about. They bring out a French onion soup that was nothing but beef broth WAY OVER salted with string cheese at the bottom. The salad was generic, my husbands had wilted and black lettuce. Oh then the main course.. my husband got the bone in ribeye which was literally half the thickness of the ones you can get at Texas roadhouse didn’t have much flavor he said and not as big as he was expecting. I had the 22 ounce lobster tail which cost $109 and was so tough that the steak knife could not even cut through it. The desserts that we got was the Reesie‘s peanut butter cheesecake and peach cobbler which both were store-bought and then a crème brûlée that we shared that I don’t even know how to describe it, it wasn’t worth it. This is a restaurant we will never go back to. My husband described it as Ruth Chris’s prices and waffle house quality food

My steak was done perfectly. The onion soup was above average. The service was exceptional, especially considering that two of their regular wait staff (a couple) were in a local hospital delivery room awaiting the arrival of their new child. As a result, the staff was stretched a little thin. However all were efficient and pleasant The exterior and interior of the business was very clean, tidy, well organized, and well managed. The atmosphere is a little on the dark side in an "old lodge" kind of way. The famous quotes posted around the restaurant were thought-provoking. One nice thing was that the owner did visit the table to greet us and check on our satisfaction level with our meals. I enjoyed the time spent there and would visit again.

My steak was delicious but we were sat next to the kitchen. We went early to avoid a crowd as we enjoy the atmosphere there. The whole place was pretty empty. We saw one other table, also next to the kitchen. This is for the wait staff convenience only. It was not great hearing the kitchen noise and banging pots. I can hear that at my own place of employment. We ordered an appetizer and asked it to be brought with the salad. It was not. The tea was so sweet it was sweeter than McDonald's tea. Overall we left a good tip as it is the holiday season and normally these same women give excellent service. Spacing people out for privacy can enhance the dining experience. Especially when the place is nearly empty. The soup was delicious as always and the salad was fresh and cold. A lot of the Indy steak houses have shut down but Bynums remains steadfast for a reason.

We came for an anniversary dinner on New Years Eve (I don't know what we were thinking) so it was pretty busy and it took us a while to be seated but not too long to take a rate the restaurant lower. It was a great experience. The food was good and you get a lot for what you are paying. The employees were very nice and friendly. Our server seemed a little overwhelmed but she was still professional. Will definitely be back.

This was my first time to the steakhouse and it was pretty epic. The service was fast and friendly we ordered cocktail shrimp, 20 Oz lobster tail, prime rib and bone in ribeye as well which come with salad and side with onion soup. Everything was fresh delicious and tasty as can be. The prime rib I ordered medium rare, came perfectly as I like. The onion soup was a too salty to enjoy but it is a come with anyway so doesn't affect my score since it is not what I came for anyway. I came for the meats and they did not skimp the lobster tail was delicious and tender. The lobster just melted in your mouth eith the drip of the butter on side. Bite after bite enjoyed it all.

Food is excellent. Steaks, Prime Rib are exceptional. Other items available as well, which are apt to be tasty, but the beef fare is 1st rate with a solid wine list as well. A bit pricey (just so you know beforehand) but similar to other 1st rate steak houses and servings are very ample. Great appetizers (nice variety from shrimp or lobster to outstanding potato cheese skins). Comfortable environment which lends itself well for business, family dining or a nice evening out for that special someone. A must try eatery!

Comfortable dining, great service and good food. The atmosphere is quite homey. The furnishings and dinnerware are casual (which I prefer). I had the filet with a baked potato. The onion soup was delicious (but a bit salty), the side salad, bread, baked potato and tea were fantastic, but the filet was just okay. It was a bit unevenly cooked. (I prefer our own backyard steaks on the grill for flavor and tenderness). My husband and I paid over $100 for our meal, and it was not a bad meal, but the price just doesn't quite match the experience. Overall, I am glad I tried this restaurant, but for a great steak, I would not choose this place.

Love the look on the inside. Very clean. Service was very fast, professional and efficient. Not friendly at all. I ordered the prime rim and my girlfriend ordered a sirloin. He steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. However, she added garlic butter....the garlic butter was awful. My prime rib was huge. Cooked properly. But bland. Now, this could have been an off night. So I am not trying to be very negative. I would come back and try it again sometime.

Wonderful serving staff! Comfortable environment and seating. Food was great. French onion soup had great flavor but not hot, just warm and skimpy on the cheese. Blue cheese dressing on salad was top quality. Really miss the walnut crunch that was original on their salad 10 years ago. Bread was soft and warm. A delight. Prime rib was cooked to perfection. Onion flower was good, dipping sauce was nice with a bit of zing. Husband loved the shrimp cocktail. A great date night. We had 2 appetizers(very seldom get any appitizers), one 32oz prime rib plate with one nibblers plate to share. Came with 2 sides (we had veggies), 2 salads, 2 soups and bread. One soda and a cup of fresh coffee. 20% tip. Took home lots of left overs for tomorrow's lunch. $111.

Great food, pretty awful service. I was the only person here when I arrived. Took them 30 minutes to even bring out my salad. Salad was not good (literally it was spring mix salad you buy fron the grocery store). Waitress just shoved food in front of me and took my soup with the bowl being half full and didn't even ask me if she could take it. I've listened to how the customers around me have been treated also and almost every single one of them have had an issue with this same waitress. People that arrived after me got their food first and I am a party of 1. Haven't been here in awhile but certainly won't be coming back.

We had a party of 11. They were short staffed so our 6pm reservation was at least 35 min behind. My son and I split the 32oz sirloin and it was one of the tougher steaks (at a nice steakhouse) that we ever experienced. We sawed through it with our steak knives. Also ordered med-rare (take a look at the pic and you be the judge of this not being rare...middle was red and cold). How do u cook a rare steak tough?? Only reason I gave it 2 stars was I tasted a filet that person next to me had and it was good. Oh, also asked for a water after a beer and brought me another beer. I said I asked for a water not a beer and she filled my beer mug up with water but still charged me for the beer

Bynums may not have the notoriety of some of the Steakhouses in downtown Indianapolis but frankly Bynums has a parking lot unlike downtown. On this visit our food was just as good as downtown and certainly not inexpensive but far more reasonable than Ruth Chris, St. Elmo and Prime 47. Our Service has always been terrific and this visit was no different.

Went on Valentines day my husband made a reservation. There was a time limit given of 1.5 hours to accommodate the busy Valentines weekend. I did feel a little rushed! My steak was disgusting. They had a valentines special with a steak that had some sort of wine sauce on it and we decided against that specifically because of the sauce. I ordered just the regular I believe it was a 10oz steak off the menu and it still had the wine sauce on it. With the time limit I didnt feel that it would be fair to the next reservation waiting for our table to have the steak remade. Luckily my husband ordered a huge prime rib that we were able to share.

  • Michael Twyford

Accommodating for a large party. Unfortunately the warmth of the food and the quality wasn’t very good. Service wasn’t all that good either. Took a bit for the staff to acknowledge the party was there and to get drinks started took a bit. We found going to the bar to get our own drinks was easier. Service and bussing weren’t real efficient for a large party. I found myself bussing in between courses seeing they kept bringing plates and not picking any up. Steak wasn’t all that great, lacked flavor and rather dry even though I ordered medium rare.

First time to dine. Traditional, old school Steak house. Sunday early evening I was able to caught the Prime Rib before it sold out. Wait staff highly trained on dining experience and bringing value to the brand. Order quickly taken, drink refills, bread, soup, salad were all brought out very timely. Food excellent, no need to drive to the downtown for me anymore. Great food, awesome atmosphere.

The food was ok, but way overpriced. I got a sirloin and potato. Service wasn't good as she was way too slow and served wrong dishes to others. The place was full of smoke the whole time we were there. I thought it might be from a grill. They should close it down til they get the problem fixed. Bruce was our server and he was awesome. He had multiple tables but never missed a beat with ours. He was very accommodating to our three girls and we truly appreciate that. We ordered our steaks medium rare and they came out medium well (after a long wait). My wife had a medium rare prime rib that was perfect. I think our steaks sat and waited while her prime rib cooked which made them over done for our liking but, this is an awesome place and even over cooked the flavor was still excellent.

They lost our ticket, people were served main course before us even though they were seated 1/2 hour after us for the same sized party (5). Hurriedly cooked our food to a burnt crisp. Discounted our bill $5 for a $156 bill. Recooked PETITE steaks to-go, sent us on our way with blood setting in the aluminum foil. Obviously intentional, in my opinion. Generally a well respected place to take your family. We drove over an hour, one-way, for this. So disappointed!

Came here for date night because my husband wanted a steak, the steak was good but nothing special, my onion soup with cheese on the bottom (?) had a croutons so hard I couldn't bite unto it after 5-10 minutes in the broth, husband's shrimp with his steak tasted and looked like costco or grocery store pre-battered shrimp, service was fantastic but food was only ok, not worth the price

Stopped by after a race at IMS. Started with shrimp cocktail with a nice amount of horseradish. Then on to fresh bread and a salad as a warmup. Main course was a giant prime rib that must have been 2 inches thick. Couldnt finish it, but they wrapped up the second half in foil in the shape of a bull. Sure, may as well have some desert and coffee also. Very tasty, good service.

I got a roasted chicken by myself. Staff was very polite despite me being solo. The food was great, the bread was great! I definitely would bring other people here. One downside is it is of course pricey, but for a nice meal for a birthday, anniversary, whatever its a good place to eat!

STICKER SHOCK. I have only ever been here once. I was shocked at the menu prices as the cheapest meal was still hovering around $16.00, but the food was good. Our server was friendly and kept up with our party. We definitely didn't leave here hungry and honestly shouldn't for what your meal costs you. Not somewhere I can afford to eat at frequently, but will definitely keep in mind for a special occasion.

2nd time there this year. Were there celebrating a Graduation and a birthday (12 adults). Servers/service were great and timely. The food was good. Atmosphere is good except for the floor. the carpet was sticky almost everywhere. I think it has been there since they opened, I believe in 1989. Time to replace the carpet.

Supper club atmosphere with very good food. The steak was a generous portion, although perhaps should have ordered medium (medium rare was pretty rare). French onion soup salty, salad was fine. Chocolate cake was rich and very good. Overall, good value and good food.

Drove in from Alabama for our 18th anniversary to have an old favorite. The onion soup is always great, hot and very flavorful. We decided to share the porterhouse which was more than enough for the both of us. Ordered it to be prepared medium rare and thats exactly how it came out. Full of flavor and beyond tender.

Ordered the Prime Rib and was served the biggest steak I've ever seen in my life! The meal came with bread, onion soup, a salad and a side. The price was far more than fair for the meal!

I can't say that I go to Bynum's a lot but when I do I always walk away satisfied. My steak was cooked perfectly. The cocktail sauce for the Fried Shrimp was thick and tangy. Delicious! The staff was very professional and friendly, but most of all, attentive. Glasses were kept filled and needs taken care. Overall a great experience.

Our new go to steak restaurant in the city. Very causal but the food was incredible. This was our first visit and I can’t wait to go back! Photos show the warm bread and onion soup, garden salad, we had the filet with garlic butter and potato, my partner had the porterhouse, then ended with apple bread pudding and carrot cake.

This was my first time at this place! Food was absolutely phenomenal! I ordered my steak medium well and it had so much flavor! The lobster was fresh and well seasoned! Our waitress Cassie was prompt and attentive.

I am a pescatarian so it might seem a bit strange that I would reccomend a steak house. Bynums on the Southside has some of the best seafood quality in the state. The swordfish and shrimp cocktail are easily on par with the oceanaire downtown, but the price is far better. My wifes said her dry aged steak was amazing.

  • Garrett Henry

Good steak for people with more dollars than sense, or taste. Absolutely nothing special over the finer downtown steakhouses that are still half the price of Bynums. Not a lot of freshness either, rather tasted like it was made from cans or Gordon's food truck.

The food was prepared very well. My Boom Boom Shrimp were delicious while the onion soup was good. The only thing that can be improved upon is the salad quality. I’m from Texas and nothing goes better before your steak than a FRESH crunchy salad. This salad had a soggy, day old refrigerated look and texture to it.

Oh, I ordered a steak medium, however, I received a well-done steak. Once I pointed it out to the Waiter They probably brought me what I ordered. I’ve been here many times in the past, but I’ve always been happy with the service.

The lobster voodoo is wonderful! Hot and crispy way better than Ruth's Chris the sauce is better too. My potato soup was good and the house bread was great. My bf got the steak and it was also great. The service was wonderful as well.

Excellent service. The onion soup was just unbelievable... Seriously good. I had the sauteed onion and mushroom stuffed filet mignon. It was absolutely wonderful. The chocolate mousse cheesecake for dessert was divine.

  • Julia Clossin

Enjoyable dinner. They give you a lot of food. Your drinks come in rather small glasses but the waitress was very attentive. The prime rib is enormous. Kind of an older vibe to the decor. Overall a nice experience.

Whoa! Visiting Indy for weekend & found Bynum via reviews..Unreal service & Food..Im a happy stuffed camper..pictures worth more than words..Shrimp, potatoes soup & porterhouse "Pittsburgh "..highly recommend..

  • Zach Gerdts

Great experience. Steaks were AMAZING. Onion soup was a bit salty to my taste. Potato skins were good, extremely cheesy. Almost too cheesy...and im a cheese lover. But overall great and will be back.
