Cafe Dinh is opened by Mr Nguyen Van Dao’s sister, or the daughter of the original egg coffee creator, Mr Nguyen Van Giang. Apparently there’s a little sibling rivalry going on and in this post, we’ll share what we think about Cafe Dinh vs Cafe Giang with regard to the best egg coffee in Hanoi Located right next to the popular touristy destination of Hoan Kiem Lake, Cafe Dinh has no lack of visitors. Even during our visit after dinner, about 75% of the cafe was filled. To get to Cafe Dinh though, is a bit of a challenge… First, look out for the Cafe Dinh sign that is smack right between two stalls that sells Singapore-styled ice cream. Not sure why they are so popular in Hanoi but in this stretch alone, we saw 3 stalls selling the ice cream slabs served between bread or wafer, just like what we get from ice cream uncles on motorbikes in Singapore. Once you’ve located the entrance, you will have to follow a really narrow path that will eventually lead you up to a flight of stairs… You will have to be careful while walking up this flight of stairs. For the typical Singaporean, you may not be used to it. Hold on to the railings (or the side of the stairs since railings are not existent), just in case. Once you’ve conquered the flight of stairs leading to Cafe Dinh, turn left to enter Cafe Dinh. If you turn right, you’ll enter into a completely modern and hip joint – that’s where you know you’re at the wrong place. Inside, Cafe Dinh seemed more “authentic” and had been decorated with old black and white photos. Definitely more “rustic” than the original egg coffee joint at Cafe Giang. Quán rất nổi, một trong những quán có tiếng nhất ở trên phố, lại có view hồ Gươm nên khách rất đông. Tổng thể quán đúng kiểu nhà phố cổ Hà Nội luôn. Cà phê trứng ở đây cũng rất ngon và được nhiều người gọi. Lớp trứng được đánh tan, mềm mịn, nằm trên lớp cà phê và được vẽ kiểu latte art rất đẹp nữa. Theo mình thì cà phê đá ngon hơn nóng. Cà phê bên dưới rất đắng, nếu không uống được đắng thì nên khuấy đều cà phê và trứng. Thêm nữa là 2 cốc cà phê 1 đá 1 nóng tổng 55k, so với mức giá trên phố cổ thì cũng được coi là rẻ rồi. This coffee shop is really famous, among the best cafes in Old Quarter. It has the view to Hoan Kiem Lake, and looks exactly the old house of Old Quarter, so it attracts a lot of guests. The best coffee they do must be egg coffee. I really like the fully stirred egg on top of which is the cute latte art. I think those who cannot drink coffee should stir coffee and egg fully so that the coffee is not that bitter. The 2 cups of coffee I ordered costed 55000 VND, it’s not expensive in comparision with the average price in Old Quarter.

Quaint coffee place that's overwhelmingly popular. Cafe Dinh is somewhat secluded, with a need to walk through a narrow passageway before reaching a flight of stairs. It seems hidden, but it's popularity and throngs of vacationers give its location away. The egg coffee was just so good. Creamy, thick and strong. It has strong flavours, like most Vietnamese coffee, but its richness from the whipped egg elevates the taste. The strength of the coffee feels like a strong punch to the face, not the painful kind, but one that hits like a large rock and suddenly all sense wake up. It is sobering. Would recommend to give the egg coffee a try if you're in the area. A must.

One of the original egg coffee creators. Lovely little café in a rustic original house still operated by the 3rd generation of the original family. The egg coffee was amazing and chatting with the owners they explained the origins of egg coffee and how it was due to a lack of milk availability at that time resulting in substitution with egg. Nice views of the lake from the balcony, and prices very reasonably. The yoghurt drink was also a must try! Definitely recommend making a visit here when I'm Hanoi.

This cafe is very popular with the locals and tourists alike. I feel like this is a polarising place for tourists as on one hand it has a very authentic feel but on the other its just a dilapidated old second floor shack. Keep in mind this place is meant to serve good coffee fast for the locals so temper expectations. We just ordered to-go since they didn't serve much breakfast options and the place is full of smokers. Their Hanoi egg coffee is great by the way!

It was a lovely and cozy cafe on the 2nd floor at the heart of Hanoi. The stairs up is intimidating and steep, so do be careful. Coffee was nice and considerably cheap, and the egg coffee and chocolate is a must try delicacy. Do take note that you have to order yourself at the counter and the owners were friendly and speak basic English. There's also a nice balcony that gives you a nice view of the open area and especially during the weekends, you get to see live staged performance.

Giá lại mềm nữa vì chủ nhà là chủ quán có lợi thế sở hữu mặt bằng không phải đi thuê. Ông chủ rất vui vẻ lạc quan và thân thiện. Nên ghé thử trải nghiệm.

The atmosphere could use a remodel, but other than that, this was the best coffee we had in Vietnam, and we tried over 10 different coffee shops. Definitely get the egg coffee, it's super light and not too sweet, the black coffee I had was nice and smooth, not bitter. This cafe was owned by the daughter of the man that apparently invented the egg coffee, whereas Cafe Giang was owned by the son. The entry was a little bit hidden, but it's worth a visit!

Amazing egg coffee made by loving baristas who use quality coffee beans freshly ground. Egg coffee is not on the menu yet because of the holiday they just had but it was the best egg coffee I had in Hanoi. 55,000 for an incredible cup of coffee was well worth it in a clean relaxing atmosphere that will perk you up on the caffeine. Very clean restroom with individual hand towels to use made a nice touch to the best coffee house in Hanoi.

This cafe was really hidden and a great place to try the Vietnamese egg coffee (cà phê trúng) or egg chocolate if you are not a fan of coffee! We first had to go down a weird alley and up some stairs. The cafe was packed with locals and luckily there was still one table free. We ordered the egg coffee and it was very tasty!

Like everyone else has said - make this a must-go. The iced egg coffee is sensational. Use a spoon to eat some of the top first, it’s like a delicious foamy custard, then stir it all up and drink leisurely. Creamy, sweet, with that hit of bitter robusta coffee for balance. And the setting could not be more perfect - rustic as all hell, sitting on tiny wooden seats, people smoking only adds to the feeling of stepping back in time, and the view from the balcony is cracking. Go at least once if you’re in town.

Awesome place to try the egg coffee. It was a beautiful decorated cup of coffee and tasty delicious. Also super cheap too compared to other famous egg coffee places. Great music was playing whilst we were there and it had a good atmosphere. Staff was friendly too. All of the tables and stalls are typical Vietnamese styles, super small but from wood. Loved it!

I arrived at 10:40am with my travel partner, thankfully beating the rush, and we were able to grab seats. I preferred the iced egg coffee over the hot egg coffee. It was a wonderful experience to take in the photos of family and get a sense of the history. The place was bustling by 11:15 full of locals and tourists.

They are the inventors of Cà phê trứng so if you want the real deal you should come here (or Cafe Giang). The location is better than other of their places near by as they have a little balcony facing Hoan Kiem lake where you can enjoy your coffee. Service and atmosphere is just ok and their egg coffee is delicious.

Authentic place to have a very nice egg coffee. The way to the cafe may seem a bit scary, but it is worth getting up there. The egg coffee was delicious and well decorated and the price is low compared to other places. The atmosphere is nice, it has old pictures of the owners.

Trully hidden coffee shop, follow the alley path and climb to their 2nd storey. Plenty of signage, so you won’t be lost. Related to the other most famous cafe. Egg foam is delicious, it’s just that too many foam not enough coffee. But still worth to try though. People can smoke inside, so it can be stuffy. Very cheap indeed.

I'd say the experience is genuinely unique. For those with FOMO who don't want to miss anything on their "Hanoi must-eat-list," the egg coffee at 25k VND is a must-try and the latte art adds a nice touch. Despite the wait due to the crowd, I have no complaints about the service.

Quán nắm ở lầu 2 và đường đi hẹp. Không thấy có nhà vệ sinh. Quán ngồi ghế gỗ thấp đúng chất. Quán sẽ khá ngộp khi có nhiều người hút thuốc. Rất đông và mau hết ghế vào những ngày lễ và cuối tuần. The egg coffee here is absolutely sublime and the best I had during my two week stay in Vietnam. The cafe has a nice, low-key and local vibe and is quite inexpensive. It's also ideally located near the lake and the puppet show theatre. Definitely come here when visiting Hanoi!

The egg coffee (25,000 VND) is so good that i went on 3 separate days during my stay in hanoi as well as when I had my 24 hrs layover. If you're at the old quarter don't forget to visit it's just near the pond and roundabout.

I wasn't sure about the match egg-coffee, and was afraid to upset my stomach. In fact it tastes very good and the texture is so soft, like the battered egg I used to have when I was a child + the aroma of the coffee that embraces and smoothens the sweetness of the eggs. It's such a treat.
