The restaurant has a cozy and warm feeling to it. The waiter provided our drinks and took our order quickly. The food also came out pretty fast. I enjoyed most of my dish, but the pork meatballs were interesting. However, I am not familiar with German food and am not German myself. Therefore, there is definitely a chance I am simply not used to some of those flavors. It was a fun experience overall still to try another cultural food. The service was very poor and multiple tables around me also made this comment. It was odd because our waiter didn’t really engage us or provide much feedback on our questions, but all the other tables around us we observed him being thorough with his responses. He also never came back once after dropping the meal in fact someone else brought our meal to us. She had her own tables but it seemed she got frustrated when we asked her questions more than a couple times and responded I am not your waiter. I understand why she might feel that way especially if she has many of her own tables. The waiter walked by us several times, our waiter, and not once made eye contact or stopped over. The manager or supervisor, stopped over to ask us how things were, but we didn’t want to get the waiter in trouble although the service was absolutely awful. So, instead we opted for a low tip, because truly he could have just popped in once shortly after we started eating to make sure everything is ok. We ordered this thick large pork thing and until we asked all we had is a butter knife to cut it with, and trust me if you see this thing you’ll know that isn’t going to work. I wish To try more food, but sometimes you can’t compromise the taste of food for poor service. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning.

As a German (born and raised for 18 years), now living in the US., I often have the desire to eat German food. I was really looking forward to eating at Cafe Berlin. Did it taste like authentic German food? No. But it sure felt reminiscent sitting outside, in a sort of Biergarten environment, with a half a liter of beer, Spaetzle, Kartoffelpuffer (Potato pancakes), and Gurkensalat. I was hoping they offered Radler, or Alster (depending on what part of Germany you're visiting), it is essentially a pilsner with sprite. Since they only offer regular beer, I also ordered a Sprite and just poured it in my beer and voila! A Radler! May be something to add to their menu (hint). The Gurkensalat (cucumber salad) was really good. It brought back memories of all the Gurkensalat I ate as a kid at my grandma's house on Sundays. The Kartofelpuffer with apple sauce (yes!!) and sour cream (what?? That is not a German thing!) was pretty good. It did not taste like the German version, but it was still tasty. The Kaesespaetzle were really good and pretty close to true Spaetzle! My sister-in-law had Melonensalat and to be honest I had no idea that was even a German thing, but she liked it. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and drink, and would recommend this to anyone who would like to try some good German cuisine.

As a neighborhood local and german beer fan I was excited to come here, but will not be returning.I came on a weekday for lunch, ordered a pretzel , a maibock and a chicken sandwich with a side soup. A server was training another and they both took my order. 20 minutes go by and I still don’t have anything on the table. I ask a server about the beer, and one is brought out. It’s the wrong beer. I ask to verify , and was told they ran out so they gave me a similar beer, one I would not have ordered. 20 more minutes go by and I have to flag the server down to ask about the pretzel appetizer. I sat for another 20-30 minutes , now having been there about an hour and fifteen minutes total before I have to this time get up and go inside to where the manager is sitting ironically eating a sandwich, to ask once where the sandwich was Id ordered an hour ago and that i’d have to take it to go at this point. A server then a minute later brings out the sandwich and soup on/in glassware. The icing on the cake was getting to see the $16 sandwich and excuse of a “soup” which you can see pics of. Failure from start to finish.

We are German and my mom wanted to eat here for her birthday in mid December. There was not enough indoor seating so we had to sit outside on a cold, dark night, with kids and eat. They had two outdoor heaters and a small fire pit (the kids enjoyed roasting their food over the flames) but it was COLD outside and the chairs are metal with no cushions. This made for uncomfortable eating. The food wasn’t as good as any of us had remembered it to be, sadly. None of us felt like the food was worth the prices either. But the kids had fun. The bill came to $490 and we were charged - wage & health insurance fee $35, tax $63 (which is higher than DC food tax and I meant to call them to complain about this), and a $98 gratuity. Total bill was just under $700. We will NOT be going back there again. Next time my mom wants German food we’re going to Bavarian Inn (where the food will be good and we won’t be grossly overcharged with fees and higher tax than the state food tax already is).

Flew into town earlier in the day on Mother’s Day. Place looked chill, not too busy. Sign out front said “You might think your kids are great, but German kids are ‘kinder.’ I’ve been to Germany a number of times. They use that joke there. Then there was another sign “See inside staff to be seated.” No problem. Let’s head inside! Wife, two teenage daughters. Met upon the host who asked if we had reservations. We said no, in from out of town. She hesitates and asks “So you’re just walking in?” Yes, I respond. Visiting from out of town. There’s a notable pause, my family glances at me, and the host says “I’m sorry, we’re not taking walk-ins today” and then looks at my wife “but have a nice Mother’s Day.” How strange. Like she didn’t care about whether we would spend money there or not. That’s too bad. Cute place and all. But seems like they think they are better than us. I would love to lavish them with praise on the $150+ I would have spent there, but alas “they weren’t taking walk-ins today.” My money isn’t good enough. Maybe yours is.

This is a quaint little place in a good location near the Library of Congress. I can't profess to be an expert on German cuisine, but I'd like to think I can tell when something is made fresh versus from a can or is made using shortcuts. My girlfriend and I decided to just do appetizers as we had an important dinner later that day. We ordered the mac and cheese, schnitzel, soup, potato dumpling, and potato pancakes. My favorite was the potato dumpling. Interestingly it had the texture of sticky rice but in potato form and was served in a pool of beef gravy. The gravy was very potent and tasted like stock broth from a jar, but very good! The pancakes were also good and are basically hash browns (luckily I like hash browns) and served with apple sauce and a pumpkin butter. Never had that combination before but it was extremely tasty. The other two either lacked flavor (mac and cheese) or were too damn good to be legally sold. But again I could taste the shortcuts and enough of them made me feel a little disappointed.

We had a lovely Christmas Eve dinner at Cafe Berlin. There was a 3 course dinner. I had a salmon starter, Jägerschnitzel as the main and gugelhupf for dessert. My husband had the Christmas goose! I enjoyed everything except the dessert was very dry. Great drink selection and service. We have been here on regular nights as well and the food is always good. Would go more but it is super expensive and then they add a 7% health insurance + 20% mandatory gratuity. While I have made my peace with the included gratuity as that is what I would tip anyway, they lose a star as it isn’t clearly communicated so you only notice if you carefully review the bill. Other places have changed the line to “additional gratuity”, here it just shows the total and and a gratuity line.

I am from Germany, so I am making a harsh judgment. First of all, the German food in this restaurant is quite authentic. Still, the food offered is not as good as the food at my grandma's house in Germany. The sauerbraten sauce was quite sour. The dough of the pretzels is very dense. In Germany, it is fluffier and the pretzel tastes more intense. Please, Cafe Berlin, don't claim that your Schnitzel is a Wiener Schnitzel. It isn't. Anyone who knows what a Wiener Schnitzel should look like knows what I mean (the breading should stand out). The apple strudel is pretty good. All in all, the prices are fair, the portions are large, the staff is nice, and the atmosphere is a good remake of an old traditional German restaurant. It really reminds me of Sunday lunch or afternoon visits to a restaurant in a rural town in Germany with my grandma. Though, it got nothing to do with modern German interior or cuisine.

  • Bill Whiteside

Great Authentic German Food. I had the Sauerbraten it came with Red Cabbage and Potato Dumplings and I added a side of sauerkraut. The kraut was sour without being overpowering and has a rye taste that complimented the sour notes. The meat was fall apart tender and the gravy was wonderful giving the potato dumpling just the zing they needed. For desert we had the Apple Strudel with Ice cream. When our waitress took our order she warned us the strudel would take 34-45 minutes so if we wanted it we should order right away. One order of the strudel is plenty for two people. The service was a bit slow but the restaurant was very busy and all of the staff were constantly moving.

We were looking for a good chicken schnitzel in Washington DC and so glad you found (probably) the best one. We started with a refreshing salad (Spargelsalat... arugula, purple, green, and white asparagus, cherry tomato, parmesan; lemon, ramp-mustard vinaigrette) and then took the chicken schnitzel with white asparagus, new potatoes, hollandaise-and I couldn’t stop smiling . It was delicious. They also have veal and pork schnitzel but I prefer the chicken. For dessert we had the chocolate cake which was just ok (nothing special) and the asparagus ice cream, pretzel crust, strawberry, mint, Grand Mariner which was insanely good. Can’t wait to go back . I need more

I've been to Germany several times and visit German restaurants around the states as I travel. Atmosphere was the most authentic to Germany I have seen. The outdoor patio was perfect for lunch and a beer and felt like I was back in Germany. The food was excellent as well. I did a sausage platter with spaetzle and sauerkraut and enjoyed everything on the plate. Beer selection is good and prices are very reasonable for being in a large city. I also did the Eiskaffee with Jagermeister for dessert which was also very good. I highly recommend a visit to Cafe Berlin if you are ever in DC. I know I will return on my next trip here!

The food was amazing. I'm not an expert of German food. But, the chicken and pork schnitzel was so good. My 5 year old ate an adult portion of one. Fresh spatzle was delicious as well. Firm, with a light sauce I believe. Very complimentary of the schnitzel. The service left a lil to be desired. We had 3 different servers, and the order got a lil mixed up. Not bad, not too good either. The atmosphere is decent. Average decor. I'd go there again just for the schnitzel.

Food was excellent. Good authentic German food as well as large portion sizes. I got schnitzel, and a pretzel. No complaints with any of my food. My only complaint with this place was my server was not the best. She mumbled anytime she talked to us. It seems like she never came over. The servers waiting on people around us seemed way more attentive. I even had to go up to the bar and request my check at the end. That aside, if you're looking for good German food don't pass it up.

This month's indulgence was delightful! Access to authentic German dishes and beers is a gift in the DMV. Let me say again: access to German beers is a huge gift! I'm still thinking about my lager several days later. To boot, for dessert we had asparagus ice cream. I have not stopped describing this dish to my friends and family. Phenomenal experience! Pricey but standard for non-casual dining in DC. Comfortable atmosphere, but a difficult to hear across the table of 5 people. Beautiful patio.

We have talked about eating here several times and we have not been able to get in! I grew up ina Getman/Bohemian/Czech community in Texas. I miss German food almost as much as I miss Mexican food! After one bite of the Nurnburger a twist on sausage Nurnburg-style sausages, caramelized onions spicy mustard on a Kaiser roll! Served up with a Radeberger Pilsner! If you haven't been you need to get it on the list. If you have, what are you waiting for? Go back!

Great service and ambiance. The food was decent but not worth the price... It is a good place for a one time date thing. But I don't want to go back. The red cabbage side was delicious and the Sauerbraten (red wine marinated beef) was tasty as well, but to us, they did not go well together at all. The Wiener Schnitzel (breaded veal) was not very good. We had to remove all the breaded to enjoy some of the meat with the vegetables. For the dessert, the slice of Apfelstrudel was tasty but not worth $19....

Having lived in Germany for a year, I had high expectations for the quaint spot. I’m very happy to report that they were met and even surpassed! The spaetzle bed the schnitzel rested on was so tasty and you could easily tell they were made in house. The main piece of the meal was so satisfyingly crispy, with enough crunch to be audible but enough meat to justify the cost and name. The half liter of Erdinger beer served to add even more authenticity to the delicious meal!

Authentic, delicious, seasonal, all around 10/10 experience. They have a fantastic selection of house and rotating drafts to make your beer-enthusiast dad feel like it’s Father’s Day. Service was professional and attentive. Beautiful presentation and flavours for the dishes - we had some classics like schnitzel and autumn soup, and also enjoyed their game-meat specials, which were impeccably prepared. Only sorry I didn’t discover this gem sooner. Thank you Rico and Cafe Berlin.

Went here for my partner’s bday, the food was sooooo good here. Got the sauerkraut balls, pretzels, jagerschnitzel and apfelstrudel, all were delicious! The jagerschnitzel came with spatzle, I’m not usually the biggest fan of spatzle, but it had this mushroom gravy was divine and ate it all up! And the service was great as well, shout out to Astrea was taking care of our party of 7 on a Friday evening and had us laughing throughout the night. Opted for some Oktoberfest beer that did not disappoint. Will be back for another special occasion for sure.

Really enjoyed the Wienerschnitzel at Cafe Berlin It is a perfectly crispy, thin piece of veal that is breaded and fried. For my two sides, I got the potato dumpling and the German Mac & Cheese. In all honesty, I didn’t find the sides to be that good. To me, the potato dumpling seemed a bit rubbery and dry, although the Mac & Cheese was decent. However, the Wienerschnitzel itself is delicious. I am not German, but the food and ambiance seem very authentic, at least as far as I can tell. Definitely worth a visit!

We were very excited to try this place as I come from a German American family, and the food was excellent. The sauerkraut appetizer, bretzel, and sauerbraten were amazing. However, we were very disappointed with the service. I understand that many restaurants are understaffed right now, but no waitstaff came back to our table after our food arrived and we would have ordered more beer and dessert. We waited at least 20 minutes before someone noticed our empty plates and asked if we needed anything. I’m undecided if I would go back at this point.

Local gem run by lovely couple who have weathered the COVID storm w ease and grace. The experience has made them solid in every degree of fine dining experience. Amongst the many specialties are the daily specials and dessert delights. We enjoy this institution sporadically, each time wanting to come more often. I’m not generally a fan of heavier food, but this a place that does it well. The flavors are contained in just the right places, delicately plated, cooked precisely, served proudly. As I said, this place is a gem.

Good for a date or to take someone from out of town. Outdoor patio is very cozy and secluded. Only complaint on atmosphere was that they seated us right next to another couple when there were lots of open tables. Food has always been good, salads are fantastic too. Unfortunately, I cannot give this restaurant more than 3 stars. $30 for two sausages and one mac and cheese is terrible. Authentic German restaurant. Our server, Hana, was very friendly, attentive and provided detailed information to our questions. We really enjoyed the Kabeljau and Jägerschnitzel, which were delicious and made us want to travel back to Germany. We also liked the half-order of Wurstfeast, which came with my wife's favorite potato dumplings. The Apfelstrudel mit Vanilla Eis is highly recommended, with a delicious, strong cinnamon flavor.

Awesome German dining experience. We took my brother in law here for his birthday. I'm a fan of any place you can order a litter of beer. Pretty good, though not particularly authentic food: good pretzels and excellent mustard; oily Gulasch and tasty "Kassler Rippchen" that were in no way like Kassler Rippchen. Part excellent and part totally shambolic service. We had an enjoyable evening there and three stars seems a bit mean, but I don't think it's worth four. Sorry!!

Enjoyed a wonderful Christmas dinner of authentic German food and great tasting traditional recipes. The staff was fun and attentive, and the hosts were warm and welcoming on a cold winter's night. Now definitely on my list of favorite DC restaurants. I look forward to on my next visit!

Food is authentic, the drinks are fantastic (both hot and cold), and the atmosphere is super relaxed. Cafe Berlin has quickly become my wife and I's go to place whenever we're craving German food.

Absolutely delicious! We tried a number of dinner dishes and each were wonderful. I always come back to spaetzle and mushroom gravy - just perfect. The staff were also welcoming and warm : )

Love this place! The food is among the best in town, with traditional German dishes and a bit of creativity splashed here and there. Autumn is a great time with Oktoberfest followed by their Wild Game Menu in November. I’ve had a few of the plates and can’t say enough about them!

Beautiful place and great food! I had chicken with spätzle and mushroom sauce. The spätzle was even better than the one I ate in Germany. Also, the waiter was very patient while my parents (who don't speak English) we're deciding what to order. I totally recommend this place.

Decent chooses of German food and if you like German beer, this is the place to go. Friendly and attentive service, the seating outside reminds me a bit of a beer garden.

I grew up going to Germany in the summers and the food here is exactly what I wanted it to be. Get the apple strudel, but be sure to place the order with your entrees so they have time to prepare it. I really loved the kasespaetzle. 10/10 recommend.

If you want authentic traditional German food this is the place to go. The real deal! Quaint outdoor dining patio on Mass ave. Good selection of German beers and the food is outstanding. Sauerbraten was amazing.

Absolutely great experience. The staff was so friendly. And when we told them we had a person with a birthday in our party they brought a birthday cake! And they have my favorite drink: Almdudler.

Cafe Berlin is one of the few remaining restaurants in DC that serve German cuisine. Schnitzel, wurst, they gave it all. Plus, an excellent rotating German draft selection.

Fabulous. Service attentive and sweet. Patio nicely covered. Food scrumptious and just the correct amount. We celebrated my friend's birthday very well. Thanks for opening

Always delicious. Even though Covid restrictions necessitated eating outside, they had ambient space heaters at each table. Very comfortable. Great service.

This was our end of the year "first" to a new restaurant and it did not disappoint. The service was fantastic, atmosphere warm, and the food was great.

  • John Thompson

We did takeout and it was great. There were four of us that shared everything so we got to taste it all. Very good.

  • Robert Bass

One of the best German restaurants I've eaten at in the US! Price is fair, the mustard is handmade by the chef!

  • Robert Guevara

Excellent menu, beer selections and service staff. Their shaded outdoor dining space is quite nice too.
