This is an honest review. I worked in an Italian bakery years ago at the espresso machine so that you know I am a professional coffee maker. A while ago, I took my father-in-law for a tour in Manhattan. We ate a simple dish at Mamoun’s falafel and went next door for a cappuccino. My father-in-law enjoyed strong coffee. I thought this was an Italian place and must have great cappuccino. What happened there was horrific. I ordered at coffee counter where they served drinks. There were two Spanish people there. One of them was making steam milk and placed a clear glass that seemed to contain yellowish beer in it on the counter near the other person. I wondered what that was as it wasn’t anything like coffee or espresso but didn’t follow the thought. We paid for the cappuccinos and went to the nearby park and sat down to drink our cappuccinos. As I took a sip I felt something wrong. The drink didn’t taste at all like cappuccino or anything close to it. It was a little sour mixed with another taste I can’t describe. I threw away the drink and advised my father-in-law to do the same. A few days later, as I was laying in my bed and thinking of this experience it hit me that those coffee makers mixed their urine with our drink. Those bast'ds took us for idiot tourists and played a sick trick on us. This is not ethical and I am speechless. All I hope for is that the management reads this review and take appropriate action to prevent this from happening to other people.

Landmark Alert ! Cafe Reggio has been around since the Roaring Twenties (1927) which means most of its original customers have lived their lives and left this earth behind. Since 1927 the following decades, the dustbowl, WWII, the post-war rebuild, the Vietnam Era, Hippiedom, the disco days, the coca 80's, and the start of the Internet Era have all left their mark on this chill cafe. Thousands of patrons have worshipped the coffee gods inside while sitting in the ancient pews or outside on the sidewalk like Al Pacino enjoyed doing. Watching the world turn over a fine cup of coffee or better yet, espresso. The Renaissance art on the walls are all original, yes, and worth a fortune (research the New York Times article that was done on this subject). These dark paintings add to the somewhat somber, almost church-like feel that one gets when huddled at a tiny table, only feet away from the next patron, much like the distance experienced in European cafes. Yet this is Manhattan and the stimulating crowd that inhabits this special place pump up the energy several notches beyond the typical cafe resulting in a vortex of mind and soul exchange. Ah yes, the circular table all to itself in the tiny nook in the wall next to the bathroom.....my branch office in the early 1980's. It had the only payphone, cleverly mounted on the wall in the nook, that took in-calls as well as dial-outs. Many a business deal was consummated here by myself and friends and I'm sure by hundreds of others as well. Ciao.....

We were wandering around Washington sq Park, waiting for a friend and she was late so quickly googled some cafes and found out this. Almost 100 years old cafe… it’s the sort of old-fashioned, American-Italian café, established in 1927. as It’s very old, you won’t find fancy items but interesting, antique pieces. It’s a fairly small, busy space, dark, with a sumptuously appointed interior, which is half the attraction. You can also sit outside at a row of tables on the sidewalk. Seating arrangements are too close and there is no such thing as personal space. I was here for its famous tiramisu and atmosphere. it is said to be the oldest cafe in Greenwich Village and also home to Original Cappuccino. It has a non-traditional breakfast menu. From a simple fruit cup to eggs over the unusual breakfast . We ordered Hot chocolate & Tiramisu. - to be honest, both were just okay. I have been to Italy, and I know what's Italian hot chocolate, so no – I did not find out that taste anywhere so far. It has a Renaissance Bench; Florence and You can actually sit in it. Just visit it for history. There's a ceiling fan from CASABLANCA. Many celebs like Al Pacino have visited this cafe.

Worst service I’ve had in NYC, it was genuinely baffling. Nobody greeted us for at least 15 minutes. We had to borrow menus from another table. Had to beg the waiter to wipe down our table twice, and he finally did so with a gross rag and the table was still sticky. You’ll have to go inside to chase them down if you want anything, we asked for waters several times that never came. The bathroom was disgusting with trash on the floor and smelled bad. Had to go inside to get my own salt and pepper. The food was cold. I’m lactose intolerant and ordered oat milk, got cows milk. Luckily I tasted it right away. The waiter didn’t even bother to say sorry. I would have left zero tip for the first time in my life, but the gratuity was automatically included, what a scam. I guess that explains the truly astonishingly bad service. I’ve been here two times now because it’s close by and quick, and it was was this bad both times. I felt like I was on a sitcom, I’m going to recommend this horrendous place to all my worst enemies.

The must visit caffe Reggio. Caffe Reggio inteoduced the Cappuccino to America! Yesss this is the first place eeeeever where the espresso machine from 1920 introduced the cappuccino to America. So trade all these perceptions you have of New Yorkers swinging in plastic cups running with caffee because this is the spot of the REAL real New york. Featured in the God Father II among other movies, the real village people of the city enjoy real coffee. The service is friendly and amazing nothing to do with the snobbish and pretentious service you can feel in some places. The staff is warm and the place gives meaning to Hospitality. Don't be intimidated. Sneak in inside the real streets of New York in McDougall st and enjoy a warm amazing cappuccino. I did also an avocado toast because it was sunday brunch for me, otherwise I would recommend and choose cannoli or tiramisu.

I came at a bad time, inside was totally full, so I sat outside. It should have been fine, if it weren’t for the hordes of tour groups (with noisy tour guides…) who constantly crowded around the front of the shop. And on top of that since I sat in front of the store I was included in a lot of their photos… It’s probably a better experience if you sit inside or in the shed, I’d just already gotten my food by the time it got bad The hot cocoa was really good!!! Pricey but it’s sort of rare to find a not-overly-sweet cocoa that actually tastes like cocoa

Summary: interesting place historically speaking, terrible coffee :( I came to Caffe Reggio expecting an outstanding café experience based on all the recommendations around the internet. I honestly think they should turn it into a museum, the history in the place and that famous old espresso machine are very interesting, you should take a look to it, but please Bring Your Own Coffee! We had a "cortado" which I'd describe it more like a very poor extremely-allongé espresso. It was terrible, I can't say anything better. If you're Italian save yourself a heart attack and go to Starbucks haha. I am very disappointed I was really looking forward to this coffee at this visit to NYC.

As Cori Sims writes in her review, you do not really come to Reggio for the food, it is the ambience, which is a combination of its history (it opened in 1927 and supposedly introduced Italian cappuccino to the US), that it has been in scenes from so many movies (some well known some not), the decor (a piece of furniture you can sit on from a Medici palazzo). Also, as Cori says, the spiked cider is a must on a cold evening. It can be crowded, especially on a Friday evening and the wait staff overworked, but the original tin ceilings---and do squeeze to the back corner, apologizing along the way for bumping into people--- and admire the original 1902 espresso machine made in NYC. I had a penne and chicken entree that was pretty good.

Might’ve been too hot and humid of a day to relax and truly enjoy the history of the cafe but we were met with unfortunate happening after happening. The pastries were delicious… a bit pricey for a group of friends trying to chill. The ice cocoa was a little too bitter (for my own tastes) and the whipped cream on top was hard and buttery. Would not recommend. But I enjoyed the dimly lit atmosphere and the little corners people could confine themselves in. A perfect place to get a little treat and read.

I decided to take my boyfriend here yesterday for a surprise birthday brunch (it was our first time) because we have a deep love for all things espresso/ coffee, historical landmarks and I heard so many good things about this cafe, I had to give it a try. For being a Sunday early afternoon, it wasn't too crowded so we were able to get a table right away. We ordered lattes which tasted amazingly and ordered both breakfast and dessert. He ordered the Canarino Voltaire which he thought was very unique, the eggs were poached perfectly and cheese was delicious. I ordered the Crepe Reggio which was chock full of spinach and was seasoned deliciously. We then each ordered tiramisu which had a heaping amount of cocoa powder on top, which is never a bad thing. Will definitely go back!!!

Food is meh and not a lot of options for dinner. Most pasta dishes did not have meats, just the pasta itself and a salad next to it. Food was bland and cold when we received it. It might be a better place for drinks/light dishes at night or breakfast/brunch? The place can get packed on weekends so service took a while and was not great. Took us forever to get our food, some water and the bill at the end. Just a heads up, tip is included in the original bill so check closely before you pay. We accidentally ended up double tipping which added almost 50% on top of our bill. It’s also our bad for not checking properly but I feel like it should have been clearly pointed out… Would not recommend.

Famous historical cafe that was a favourite hangout of Kerouac, featured in the Godfather, Shaft and Serpico, and had JFK do a speech outside once too. Apparently had the first espresso machine in the USA imported from Italy, which is still on display today, and was also the first place in America to serve cappuccino. Very traditional and historic feeling inside with over 80 separate artworks, including a painting from the school of Caravaggio. Worth a visit for all the reasons above, but also the coffee is great, the prices are reasonable and the service is also good.

Caffe Reggio is amazing and historical. They display incredible Renaissance period artwork, most notably, a piece from the school of Caravaggio. They are also known for being the first cafe to serve a cappuccino in America. I've been here for dessert and drinks on weekends a few times, and though it's always busy, you can always find a seat. The atmosphere is warm, friendly, and lively. The artwork is really awe inspiring. The desserts are all incredible. I particularly enjoyed the apple tart and Nutella croissant. I don't usually like espresso martinis, but I like theirs.

Beautiful Cafe with fantastic coffee available throughout the day and night- Cafe Reggio offers century-old artwork situated throughout the cafe. The staff is friendly but could provide better service, which is understandable due to how busy they can be, the best time is late night or early morning to experience the space without the crowd- they offer an outdoor heated section though inside aesthetically is much more pleasant. Fantastic place to meet artists, write, or just relax in creative-inducing environment

Caffe Reggio is a charming coffeehouse that exudes vintage elegance and a cozy atmosphere. Stepping inside feels like entering a bygone era with its historic decor and antique furnishings. The menu offers a wide selection of coffee beverages, including their renowned cappuccino and espresso. The rich aroma and expertly crafted drinks make for a delightful sensory experience. Paired with their delectable pastries and Italian treats, it's a haven for coffee lovers and those seeking a moment of relaxation. Caffe Reggio's timeless charm and top-notch coffee make it a must-visit spot for a taste of old-world coffee culture in the heart of New York City.

Caffe Reggio is famous as “first restaurant to serve cappuccino in the US”. It’s a cute place in MacDougal street. It can be a bit congested as seats are compacted in small area. They have an outdoor sitting too. It took staff a little while to get our orders but oversall staff was courteous. We ordered ravioli al pesto, campagnola and pugliese along with Bellini, Mimosa and lavender mimosa. The food was delicious and drinks were great. Although the serving size of ravioli al pesto was considerably less. Overall good experience.

Came for dessert at 8:30pm. At first, a friend and I split 2 profitteroles and 1 sfogliatella. Both I thought were OK, each a little stale. Then my friend saw profitteroles had been freshly made, so we ordered 1 more to split, and that was amazing, more moist and flavorful, a totally different experience. (In my photos showing the dessert storage, you see profitteroles on the middle shelf on the far left of both - - the slightly stale ones were stored in glasses, the freshly made ones were directly on a platter)

Oddly horrible service; didn’t ever get checked in on, didn’t have enough silverware and waiter was no where to be found to ask for more so we finished our meal by literally sharing utensils, wasn’t able to write in our own tip even though the table next to us with the same waiter were able to (pics included). waiter seemed really unsure of self and barely said anything at all when we ordered, don’t even know his name to make a proper complaint. we had to go find him to get the bill. thankfully the food and drinks were tasty. but would not return unless the only place open honestly.

Although not a secret by any stretch of the imagination, stepping into Cafe Reggio immediately feels like you've discovered a hidden gem of old New York. You are immediately transported to a different time and place. The atmosphere is absolutely unmatched by any coffee spot in the city. It's as easy to strike up a conversation with an eclectic stranger or keep staunchly to yourself and watch the people. The coffee and pastries aren't too shabby either! Would 100% recommend Reggio for a solo cup or an intimate rest stop!

look, I get the appeal of an old building with all original molding and stuff but they have not been taking care of this place and now it's just visibly disintegrating. plus they try to pack in way WAY too many seats. it's horribly cramped and, obviously, the staff seems completely overwhelmed. I was there in the middle of the day on a tuesday and I was still struggling for enough elbow room to lift a coffee. if you must stop here, order to go and tip extremely well. it's not the servers' fault it's like this.

My husband(not a coffee fan) wanted to taste a coffee in New York. so, I took him here this morning. He had vanilla flavored cappuccino and omelette. I had tomato soup and crepe Reggio. We felt tomato soup doesn’t have artificial sweetness, it tastes yummy. Omelette comes with bread and crepe Reggio comes with salad. Both were satiating. Cappuccino is just fine. Super fast service. it does have tiny restroom and antique Ambience.

Went there on a saturday and we sat on the sidewalk cabin. Moving inside it was very complicated. We ordered cappuccinos and they were pretty normal (I was expecting more because of the hype). The inside of the caffe is pretty cozy and I loved to learn that they have an original Caravaggio hanging on the wall. It's pretty dark and packed of people tho. The worst part for me was the restroom, which was equivalent to a chemical toilet. The bast part was definetly the history of the place.

My friend and I was at Caffe Reggio today. We ordered drinks and were chatting, weren’t sitting there even for an hour. A dark-skinned male waiter, tall, chubby and with glasses walked up to us and told us to leave because he needed more empty tables. His tone was assertive and rude. We noticed there were definitely several table around us who arrived earlier than us, he chose to be rude to us. This kind of racist act should not be tolerated. Please react to this and not let this waiter do something like this to other customers again.

Even on weekdays, it’s super busy! The Interior is so cute but we couldn’t sit inside due to crowds so we sat outside. The outside design is the opposite of the inside, not cute:) Service was fast even though it was really busy. We ordered two cappuccinos and a tiramisu. The coffee was nice but I didn’t love the tiramisu just average for me. I had to use their restroom omg! So dirty and there is almost no light inside you can’t even see properly. Overall it was ordinary.

Yes there’s history in the old-timey cafe but no one is mentioning how dark and poorly ventilated this cafe is indoors? The outdoors is pretty basic and not what you’re here for while the indoors made me get into a sneezing frenzy with the dust around. Cappuccino is decent and the cannoli is okay, but I wouldn’t come here for the menu. Saw lots of people come in just to take photos and leave.

Cafe Reggio is definitely a popular hangout on any given weekend. Coming here only for drinks we decided to try an array of them. Their non alcoholic cider, alcoholic cider, mulled. All alcoholic drinks were pretty and the service wad great. Overall lovely and chilled out ambiance to catch up with a group of friends. Only funny thing about this place is their restroom being in the front of the restaurant, you might get a walk of shame if you take a bit toooo long in their.

Some of the best coffee I’ve had in the city! I ordered 2 cups, it was that good. So unfortunate that my experience was marred by a rude waiter who lacks etiquette and speaks to customers (and staff) in a disrespectful manner. My husband and I come back to Caffe Reggio every time we are in NYC and we absolutely love it. We were really happy to see that the Cafe not only survived the pandemic but also expanded its outdoor seating area. The 1000% best Cappuccino west of Italy and great food made from great quality ingredients. The interior is one of a kind with great art pieces, contemplative music and our highlight: the over 100 year old espresso machine. We will be back as soon as we're back in the City!

A must visit if you are in Greenwich. My friend enlightened me that this almost 100 year old cafe was the first to make cappuccino in US. So we had to order cappuccinos with some yummy slices of cake. The chocolate cake was delicious and the coffee perfect. We dropped in late night and were surprised to see a crowded cafe. Will surely visit it again to try other things on the menu. Loved the vibe of this place.

Wonderful atmosphere, terrible drinks and food. Moody on a winter morning, with light streaming into the shadowy interior. Sadly, the signature cappuccino is almost undrinkably bad, with coffee and foamed milk both poorly executed. Also TINY bathroom (need to sit sideways on the toilet!). Hope it gets the Dante treatment – update the food, keep the mood.

A classic that we visit whenever we come to NYC. The best Italian cheesecake ever, and a perfect cappuccino. I think of this place often since we first visited in the 80’s and it didn’t disappoint on my recent visit. Such nice service as well, friendly courteous and quick. Definitely unique and artsy place, and the food was good. I went at a busy time so this might not be generally applicable but I felt that the customer service could be improved, it was a slight challenge to get the waiter’s attention. If you go, I’d recommend the Bellini, and even better the lavender mimosa. I might be back - to get dinner with a friend or even by myself to study/write (saw some people working with laptops)

Nice place to sit and enjoy Greenwich Villiage. Great place to hang out and pretend you're an edgy NYU art student. The cappuccino was bomb and most of the drinks are nice. I haven't tried the pastries but they look really nice! The seating indoors and out is also very charming and comfortable and it is one of the rare places in nyc where the owners don't mind you sitting for hours.

Very bitter espresso, clearly dark roasted until burnt, very much not a specialty coffee shop. If they are busy you will sit outside which misses out on the whole “decor” or “atmosphere” that most of the reviewers are rating this on. Service was good but if you want coffee after 8pm go somewhere else.

Quirky coffeeshop with gothic decor. It’s the only non-bar spot open in the area until very late on weeknights, which I appreciate! We sat in the outside area and they had cozy heaters. I ordered the apple cider and it was the perfect drink for a cool night :)

This is a warm, cozy place at a busy street. It gave authentic Italian vibes. I got only a hot chocolate looking at how busy the staff was and how much time they took to take our orders and bring it. The hot chocolate tasted good but it could’ve been a little more creamier and sweeter. Definitely going back to taste their authentic tiramisu!

My favorite cafe of all time! Old world charm in the heart of Greenwich Village. My favorite study spot as a student back in the day. The tiramisu and sfogliatella are incredible ✨

The thing that surprised me the most about this place was how kind all the staff were. Even though it was a crazy weekend rush, the staff made time for everyone, got my items to me quickly, and offered up such genuine hospitality. The coffee was excellent! The cinnamon on top made it feel so homey. You guys are amazing, thank you for taking such good care of me!

Wanted to Dine in and was excited because of the reviews, I ask the host/waitress if I could sit anywhere or wait to be seated, said I could sit anywhere, sat and was given a menu none to kindly if I have to say so, same host/waitress. And had to wait 15-20minutes before I got the memo I wasn’t gonna be serve. So I left.

my sister recommended this place. the ambiance and service was great. the food came right away and our server was accomodating. We had the tiramisu chocolate mousse, and coffee. The tiramisu was okay but the mousse was better. Overall, the vibe was great and I believe they close around 3-4am. So, this place is perfect for those late nights in the city.

Historic Cafe in West Village. Very authentic awesome interiors. Really, it's a must-visit if you have an appreciation for history. The coffees were great. Chai tea latte and cappuccino both very flavorful. The tomato soup was pretty bland, though.

Love the old school vibe, drinks and food. They gave great mulled wine in Winters and summer drinks in summers. Their coffee is historical from what I've been told. Also their tiramisu is legit one of the best I've had in new York (and I've had many). I recommend their sandwiches and pesto pizza as well. Love that they are open late night till 4am

First of all, we love The Village! Greenwich Village is and has always been one of my favorite spots in Manhattan! After ages we went back to the Caffe Reggio, it’s small, old but magical! Love it! It’s doooo cool to be back after such a long time! We had great coffee and an amazing creamy Pecan Pie Very good service too! Must go and check it out!

  • Aris Trantidis

The place is going to be crowded no matter what the reviews are, but if you know about good coffee, they don't serve it here... what I got here was probably one of the worst I ever had. The place has atmosphere though and seems frequented by cool people. The staff I interacted with were rude.

Absolutely old-world classic Italian cafe, with a contemporary NYC vibe and charm. Splendidly styled to bring out the European charmed one within yourself. However, tightly seated, so can easily fill up quickly. Original Italian pastries, of course are yummo and lattes are large and creamy. Absolutely Like

Their website is false advertising. Completely different menu in person and double the price. They know they haven’t updated it. I couldn’t find anything to eat with my dietary restrictions (lactose, gluten, and no pasta / bread for anxiety withdrawal / dependency). At least it was warm in the winter and had plenty seats at 1pm

As far as i can remember from the good memories from last time, very little has changed estetically, granting a positive feeling overall but improvements and updating of tastes could have easily have taken place and I couldn't been fully updated to the latest improvements.

I absolutely love this place!! So many tasty options, their coffee is amazing and it’s venue it’s cozy and cool. Their dessert options are great, I specially love the fragola with Pana. It’s hours are amazing, you can go very late at night and delight yourself. Their prices are very reasonable and the staff is friendly.

Shared an Avocado Panini and Apple Walnut Salad with my friend + we both had a hot chocolate. Panini was good, way too much celery in the Walnut Apple Salad though I just picked out the celery bits. We sat in the shed in front. It was nice.

Great vibe with a unique decor. A friendly waitress brought me an excellent $3.00 Americano. Definitely a quintessential spot in the Village and the perfect place to chat with a friend, or catch up on a little reading. The only downside is that to use their free WiFi, you must log in through Facebook or WhatsApp.

Got only a cappuccino and it took really long to arrive. Coffee into it wasn’t great, but overall it was a good cappuccino. The place was very dark and empty. Cool the Caravaggio paintings. However, it could do a better job with ligh

They were the first 12 bring an expresso machine from italy by water. It's still there to be seen for exhibit. The perfect place for a quality cheaper than starbucks and american cheesecake for half price than juniors ( Probably A third of this size but still pretty good)

First cappuccino in America - so make sure to get that here! It was delicious! Also make sure to look at the awesome espresso machine that was imported from Italy by the owner for $1,000 his entire life savings! Check out the inside of this place it is like walking into a time capsule!

  • Nuria Yeste

Cannot judge much regarding the drinks and food they serve as we only had one coffee and one tea, but place looked super super cool and different from other places, so it's a good place to check out. It gets really busy and all tables are really close to each other to gain more space.

Stunning spot- a treat to the eyes and the food and drinks were outstanding. The barista/ bartender was great and was able to tweak the beverage to our liking- which was really nice of him to do! One of the og nyc cafes that has held onto its vibe ❤️

I checked it out on a beautiful rainy day around sunset where I wanted a shelter with a hot coffee, so I might be biased..lol Friendly staff, good service and I was sitting in the patio watching people pass by. Menu seemed ok, little above average.

  • Leslie Feffer

One of the last vestiges of "old" Greenwich Village, dating back to the late 1920s. The atmosphere/ambiance is retro, and the food and beverages are quite good. The tin ceiling, centuries-old paintings, and Medici bench all add to the atmosphere.

  • Katie Angelova

Was a nice visit earlier in the day. Seating was plenty and staff were attentive. In the evenings, especially on a weekend, things get pretty chaotic. Service took forever for just dessert, and the famous cappuccino was only so-so in my opinion.

  • J Liu

Cute, cozy cafe that transport you into another time and country. Tight seating but it has its charm. Offers the usual caffe drinks, and some seasonal speciality drinks like lavender lemonade. Pastry and dessert bites are available for nibbling.

  • T C

Great cappuccino and the Italian cheesecake was absolutely to die for. We enjoyed a nice table on the sidewalk and had timely service. Everyone was friendly and the coffee and desserts are definitely worth a repeat visit. 10/10 would recommend.

Must-visit for any Russian: Brodsky’s favorite cafe (if the legend is true). Very nice old-fashioned place with good deserts and coffee. There are some tables outside so you may enjoy watching the down town life while drinking your cappuccino.

one of the first places that made me feel welcomed in New York~ everything on their dessert menu is amazing (haven’t tried their savory food before) The service is always welcoming and they offer satisfying desserts at reasonable prices.

Cafe Reggio boasts the most captivating and unique cafe design in New York, making it a must-visit. However, it's important to set expectations lower when it comes to service quality. They have the first cappuccino machine in there

My favorite place for a midnight drink. I stop here all the time. Tends to be a bit busy every so often since there's not a lot of workers, but the ones I see have a lot of experience, and handle the place very well.

First things, the vibe in this cafe are amazing. The cafe plays classical music which pairs amazingly with the selection of drinks on the menu. I got a almond milk cappuccino and apple pie. Both were very delicious.

By far, one of my favourite places in the Village. Great coffee and there’s really nothing to compare to the ambiance of the place. I’m not sure I could head into Manhattan without finding my way to Caffe Reggio.
