I want to start this review by stating that I have been to this location many times and always loved their food. I will never go there again and it is not because of the inedible and rotten food they sold me but simply because of the terrible customer service that was provided. I ordered shrimp rolls instead spring rolls but one of these Spring rolls Was rotten and blackish Brown on the interior with the putrid smell emitting from it. I call to ask for a refund for the rolls they sold me and the lady had an attitude and made it seem like maybe I was making up a story and requested that I bring up back to her location. So I left work again to bring these rolls all the way back to their store where she insisted that it was burnt not rotton. The outside was a very light tan and it is impossible that it would have burnt the roll all the way through to a rock solid blackish Brown. She then insisted that she only charged me for Spring rolls and didn't even give me the full refund for the shrimp rolls that they actually charged me 4. I have pictures of the terrible food and video of the terrible service. You have lost a good customer, learn to treat your customers with care.

Okay food. The wonton soup was very good. Not impressed by house fried combination rice. It just didn't have that thai kick to it (not heatwise but aromawise) that I get from thai food carts. A lil more wonton would be nice for price you pay. Gilden triangles would be lot better if not thst sslty. Way too salty. For a hole in wall place, its tad bit on spendy side. The lady however behind the counter is super sweet, hard working and remembers your order exactly. For 3 appetizers I ordered she just scribbled one line and it came out with 3 appetizers. I was tad bit worried if she listened to us order all three..she did. 4 stars bevause of her..otherwise 3.5 Will give it another try and see if different stuff on menu is better. They were busy with phone orders. We waited 20 minutes on street parking on busy stsrk street in our car since it was like death valley nevada in july..lol. Tad bit worried with A-holes zooming by doing 60 in 35 zone on se stark at 140th but thats Portland.

The food was good, but nothing any more special than any other thai food joint. The staff was mediocre friendly but that didn't bother me. They weren't rude but weren't overly friendly and welcoming either. The reason it gets 3 stars is because the place is SO tiny that it was quite uncomfortable to be there - which defeats the purpose of eating out. We were super cramped and right next to the door which kept getting opened and closed by customers, and never closed properly leaving a cold draft coming in at all times. It was one of those, let's scarf quick and get out of here situations, unfortunately. I go out to eat 90% of the time not out of necessity of just needing food, but seeking an enjoying atmosphere to have conversation in. This was not the place for that. Good food if you just need food, not a place to hang out in and enjoy your company.

Hi everyone Chai Thai, Has very good Thai food. They have been here a long time. I have eaten at least 28 other Thai restaurants in the Portland area and I only found 3 Thai restaurants that the food taste really close to same In Thailand. Chai Thai is one of those 3. Family run restaurant, Very friendly and very Good Thai food. Check the menu, I know they have something for everyone!! they use the freshest vegetables and the spicy's are spot on. And as for hotness just let them know your not big on the hot chili ️ peppers, say no spice or level 1 usa standard... If you like really hot Thai food, Like I do & (just like in Thailand) let them know Thai level 3 hot. They will fix you right up. You don't have to believe me, go try it for yourself!! Only open Monday to Saturday. They are closed on Sunday. Family time.

The food (part of it) was delicious and the service was fast and friendly, but the food started tasting strongly of styrofoam as I was eating closer to the bottom of the styrofoam take out container. Apparently the food was so hot when it was put in that the styrofoam got cooked into it. It actually warped the underside of the styrofoam container, as you can see from the photo. If they insist on using styrofoam, they should line it with parchment paper (aluminum foil is less ideal because it has certain health risks when it holds hot food directly, but it's better than cooked styrofoam). Non-styrofoam is much better. I had to throw out the rest of my food because it tasted like styrofoam. I'll be going elsewhere for takeout until they improve their containers.

I've been wanting to try this place for awhile but never have the time and they are closed on the weekend. The other night I stopped in 2 seconds before closing, I hadn't realized that but the lady at the counter said, place order and I will make it. She sort of had an in your face snappy attitude, kind of reminded me of when Roseanne worked at the diner on her show, if Roseanne was a little Asian lady. They made my order, then I headed for work. Got to work and OMG, I thought the flavor was spot on, (Chicken Pad Thai) and I can't wait to try more of the menu.... Thank you Chai Thai, I will be back. On another note it is not by far a 5 star restaurant based on the condition of the place, it is 5 star based on the flavor.

  • breezymoon

The owner told me there was purposely only (4) small shrimp in my entire $18 order of Tom Yum soup. She told me to go to Little Caesar's, or Red Robin next time. I understand inflation, which is what her reasoning was-but paying $3 to switch meats, and only getting (4) small shrimp felt more insulting than her actual insult to me. Each order is about 4 bowls, so only one shrimp per bowl. The soup was too sweet - unlike the owner. The Drunken Noodles were light on chicken, but not offensively so, at least the ratio allowed some meat to spread throughout the dish. So I won't eat there again, but you might want to skip the shrimp upgrade, folks!

In a relatively quiet stretch of SE Stark Street, nestled between a tire shop and a hair salon, is a tiny cracker box restaurant with some of the most consistently yummy Thai food to be had. Walk in and be greeted by the sunny smile of the woman at the counter. Don't know her name? That's okay. She'll learn yours soon enough. Between bustling to bag up orders, serve drinks, and take calls, you'll come to understand just how hard this mom and pop shop works to serve up great fare. Chai Thai is a diamond in the rough and a cherished jewel of outer southeast Portland!

I have been coming to Chai Thai since I moved to Portland years ago. It’s one of those tiny ma & pa places that is just a true gem. The food is phenomenal, portions are huge! Joy and the fam are so bright and welcoming. I have not found any other Thai place that can even compete, and on top of that they are more affordable than everyone else, too! I’ve ordered many delicious dishes, but I seem to drift more to the pineapple fried rice, drunken noodles, panang curry, and tom kha soup. Highly recommend giving it a try, you won’t regret it! Just remember they are only open Mon-Fri until 9pm.

  • Denney

I love this place dearly. It is one of the first places I ate when I moved here, and even after all the wonderful food I have eaten in this city, Chai Thai stands out as an exemplary example. The food is absolutely amazing. They never miss here. My favorites are the larb and pad prik khing. The menu is extensive though and I recommend trying everything that interests you.

The food wasn't that good for it to have been 15 bucks for chicken garlic pepper stir fry. Kinda expected better. I walked out paying $56 and was disappointed also we got stomach aches and ended up on the toilet. I will stick with my usuals that I go to. This isn't it.

Seriously the BEST Thai food we've had! We ordered Pad See Ew, Drunken noodles, yellow curry, Tom Kha soup, Pad Thai, and spring rolls. All was so delicious! The soup and yellow curry were just a touch too sweet for my palette, but the over all flavor makes up for that. Friendly service.

Before going to this place we called to make sure they are open, they said they were. When we got there we found out that there is no inside dining due to construction. Lady that was talking to us was extremely rude. We ask why she would not let us know the situation with inside dining. Her answer was THE SIGN IS ON THE DOOR! Seriously? Anyways, glad they didn't serve inside, place looks like dumpster infested with rats and cockroaches. GROSS! DO NOT GO THERE!

Oh man oh man. Chai Thai is hands down the best Thai food I've had in Portland. I love going into the restaurant on non-peak hours to sit at the bar and watch them cook. It's mesmerizing. If you're looking for dinner I definitely recommend ordering beforehand. The space is super small so it's possible there won't be seating left, which is why it's just easier to order take out. I've had many of their dishes, but I always seem to go back to the yellow curry. Something about how they make it is just too damn good!

  • Maddie

Very small venue. Food came quick and had a good amount of heat to it. I had the squid Curry and the squid was very tender. Came with a big portion of delicious, steamy, freshly made rice.

Chai Thai's small family-run restaurant always offers absolutely fresh and delicious food, and we've never been let down in all the years we've ordered take-out from there. Phoning can occasionally be frustrating since they don't always pick up on the first call during peak hours, but it's frankly worth the repeated calls. Street parking in front of the restaurant is difficult and kind of dangerous near dinner time (traffic on Stark moves fast), so it's often better to park on a side street.

  • Black Skyy

My son and I come here all the time. Good customer service. Awesome food. Thank you for the good food We totally recommend this place When I come here without my son customer service sucks. When the mom is taking orders, she’s awesome. Her daughter needs training on customer service. Black females customers, she act real stand-off like.. the daughter treats black females different. I sat here a few times and listen to how she speaks to people.. very interesting... Food is awesome though.

  • Trisha Hansen

This was my go to place for years. Ever since they shut down and reopened their quality is horrible. The service is still amazing. There Pad Thai has no flavor and looks like it's been sitting under heat lamp for hours. Ugh. Cant get the texture out of my mind. I'm disappointed:( I also ordered chicken curry...it has more pineapple than anything else. . And the consistency is much thinner. Not sure what happened but I hope they fix it soon. I want my favorite place back!!!

  • Justin Chavez

We went on a busy day. We were planning on eating in the restaurant but ordered the food to go because it was hot in the restaurant. The staff was friendly offering bottled water to the customers who were waiting for their take out orders. When we got our food we were surprised by the large portions. One entree was big enough for two people. The hardest part of sharing is that the food tastes so good that you might not want to. If it's a hot day call ahead and order take out.

  • Austin Eisert

I love this little place. It is one of those wonderful little holes in the wall. It seems to be family owned and operated, which is great because once I ordered some fresh rolls and the person taking orders said, "Mama will bring you your fresh rolls shortly." Feels like you're right in Mama's kitchen :-) I generally order take out since it is so close by, but if you don't mind bar stools it's nice and cozy and you can watch your food being prepared. I highly recommend it.

  • Vicky Cradit

I hate to give a bad review but after all the hype, I found it to be an extremely long wait in a suffocatingly small diner for just ok, nothing special Thai food. Plus it was very cliquish with the locals eyeing us up and down, meanwhile they're sitting chit-chatting with the woman behind the bar and we're standing right next to them trying to make eye contact with her. I think the standard for Thai food is kind of low here in Portland sadly. We should demand better

  • Cassandra Renee

This was the most amazing experience. I had this cafe at the place I grew up that made you feel like family and this is the first place I found that gives you that family feeling. The food is amazing and I am beyond excited to try more. Really looking forward to pineapple fried rice. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for amazing Thai food. The seating is very limited and it looks a little weird driving by it but trust me it is so worth it!

  • Lana Heikkila

This is my favorite Thai food restaurant in Portland! Great food, great and fast service! The lady's working there have been there for awhile and know their food and make it to order (made curry with super soft veggies for my toothless grandpa). FYI it's not a place to have your birthday or bring a big group of ppl but it's nice and cozy to eat as a couple or alone. Most of the locals order their food to go, because it's so delicious and convenient!!

  • Steven Beeghly

We live in west Portland and commute out here no problem because it's the best, most traditional Thai food in Portland. Joy is just the nicest person to ever take your order. Her parents bring there amazing Thai cuisine from their hearts to yours. Must have dishes dishes are the chicken pad thai, chicken pineapple fried rice, chicken panang curry with rice and the chicken cashew. Medium is pretty spicy which we love. But it for the faint of heart.

  • K S

I ordered L5 spicy from lunch menu. What I got was Totally bland no flavor, vegetables were boiled, not stir fryed. I've been here many times, good food, not great food. Called them back for new order. The women tells me to just add hot sauce. I told her no and on my way for new order. She had bad attitude today. Wrote on my order extra spicy X2. Here's the before and after pic. So everyone just eat what you get or they'll Fu(k with your Food!!

  • Jam See

Our noodles were so tasty and I've had lots of different kinds of spring rolls and the ones I got were pretty unique. I really liked them, they stood out from the rest! The lady at the counter was very nice too and she had a big smile, I'll definitely go back

Tasty tasty food. Had the thai fried rice, taste exactly how a thai fried rice should be, would be better if i remembered to ask them to not put the green peas and carrot... But it is still delicious. The lady at the counter is very friendly and most of the takeaway seems to be by loyal customer as she seems to know them all... Oh tasty thai food... Just wish i have my family with me so that i can order more food and eat more dishes

Very good, very straight-forward Thai food. This restaurant had excellent meat, fresh vegetables and simple but flavorful seasoning. They also have a wonderful hard-working staff. The interior is small and the ambiance has a very home like feel. It did get pretty busy towards the end of our visit. Since everything is made to order, wait times were a little long, but that's definitely a price worth paying for hot, fresh food.

This tiny hole in the wall thai diner is amazing. The woman who took my order was wonderful. Not much of a wait time, and the food was worth it! Little spicy for my wife, but either way this is definitely our new thai spot! Thank you guys!

There are dozens if not hundreds of Thai restaurants in the Portland Metro area, and this is by far the best. It's a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant, but don't let the outside keep you from trying the food. The noodles are always perfectly cooked, and the Pad Kee Mao is OUT OF THIS WORLD delicious. Not to mention, it's a family run operation, and they always have great customer service. Highly recommend.

  • Jamie Kalmbach

Always eat to go because the inside is small, but the food is always amazing. I always order hot basil fried rice with chicken (though it is not very spicy), pad Thai with fried tofu is my husband's favorite. I also love the lemongrass chicken, fresh rolls. Tom ka with fresh tofu is fantastic as is the yellow curry. I have yet to order something that I did not like. 10/10 will continue to eat from there.

  • maddie kerr

be aware when you ask for something spicy that it won’t come as such. i’ve had two experiences in a row where i clarify that i want my food a level 3 spice (the highest she says it goes) and my food is absolutely mild. no spice whatsoever. the flavor is good but for people who want some kick i wouldn’t expect that here

Went here for lunch today for the first time on a recommendation. The place is SUPER tiny and quaint. The food was alright, salad rolls were absolutely flavorless but the pad see ew was good as well as the potstickers. The staff on the other hand was THE MOST unfriendly group of people I have ever encountered. When we left there wasn't any kind of acknowledgment that we had even been there.

  • Stephen Allen

True hole in the wall gem. I had salmon curry. Just delicious. Older Thai mom in the back and her daughter out front. Everything a family restaurant should be. Flavored of food were complex and a little spicier than most places. Mild is a little warm but I love spice and it didn't overpower the flavors. So happy that I was taken by friends. I probably wouldn't have found it otherwise.

Really fantastic sauces and the salmon had a beautiful crispy outside and juicy inside, not dry at all. I highly recommend it, everything is made to order, and while hot spices are readily available they don't overload it during cooking. It's a perfect order ahead/to-go place and feels a bit like a diner, the exact kind of unassuming place you would expect to have fantastic food.

  • Niko Makarov

The absolute definition of a secret hole in the wall in the best way possible. Amazing authentic Thai food that changes with the seasons based on what’s available. Ask for advice and the owner is only too happy to oblige. If it isn’t super busy (rarely) strike up a conversation and she’ll tell you all about the food and then some. Worth making the trip out for her food.

  • Levi Lais

Before this place- E-San Thai downtown was the best Thai I've ever had. Now, however, my mind has been blown. I've had many, many Thai experiences in the last 2 years since I discovered Thai food... and this place is INCREDIBLE...anybody who knows me knows I'm super cheap, and $9-12 is a very good price for food this good!!! Aaaahhhhhh!!!!!! I love this place!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dragon Star (PdxDragonBoi)

The greatest, most friendly and wholesome family from Thailand all collaborate to give you the greatest meal possible. Never any MSG. Big portions for low prices. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and it's held up as the best Thai food in Portland, in my opinion. I've tried so many of Portland's Thai restaurants and this one blows them all out of the water.

  • Isabel Penaloza

This is a little hole on the wall. But the food is super yummy and the restaurant is family owned And super organized. I always get the same thing and the gal even knows me by name. It’s always a must go when I’m in that side of town during the day I week. Definitely recommend 100%

The food is absolutely amazing--quite possibly the best Thai food I've ever had. It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall kind of place, so don't expect to bring a large group. I've had about eight of their dishes and all were great, as was their Thai iced tea. The spiciness can range from not at all (how my girlfriend always orders it) to making this habanero eater sweat.

  • Tree's Adventures

This place is always packed, it is very small. The ladies that cook and serve (I've only ever seen two of them) are always so pleasant and sweet. They have a lot of regulars and I can see why! But the food is always fresh and delicious. Right now my favorite thing is the Wonton Soup. I can't get enough, it's amazing! But the Salad Rolls can't be denied!

  • Jr. Velasquez

Man, this place is the definition of hole in the wall. The food is astoundingly good! Perfect blend of spices with quality ingredients. Prices, at least for lunch, are very reasonable. The only thing that I would knock it for was it being warm in the restaurant since it is such a small place with the grill heating it up. Other than that, it is a must!

It’s a small homey little place but oh boy is the food fresh & delicious. I’m obsessed with their juicy, thick, sweet mango chunks- mango curry (and I’ve had plenty for a much larger price) My whole family loves this place. The flavors are on point, the price is right & the workers are very sweet. Definitely on my fave list for some Thai to go.

The restaurant feels like an actual hole in the wall, so be prepared to get cozy. We like sitting up at the bar so we can watch the chef work. If you're close I recommend walking over, but there are a few extra car parking spaces in the back of the building if the three out front are taken. It's tiny but the food more than makes up for it.

  • Natasha Brant

Joy is super sweet, the food is beyond amazing (order from their specials menu). Sometimes I just wished their menu was a little smaller though, people will Def order that one random weird thing they hardly make and judge them by that. They are always busy as heck and seating is limited but order takeout! It's super fast!

  • Kenneth Bush

My absolute favorite Thia restaurant. They make the best food and their menu is anything but basic. With a variety of proteins to choose from and all kinds of fruits, vegetables and spices. The people are friendly and I love how it’s a small family business. Just serving great food to the local families who support them

  • Mari Ralis

Best Mussaman curry I've had anywhere. The atmosphere and size of the place felt like I was visiting family for dinner. The owner(?) knew almost every single customer by name, knew their favorite things to order, and overall the entire place just had an overflowing friendliness. Everything was so good and so tasty!!!!

  • Flint Redrock

For East Portland, this is fine dining. Tasty Thai staples served in a tiny old greasy spoon with counter seating. The family that runs the place is awesome but don't take too long to pick up your food or they'll sell it to someone else, fool! Get the pineapple fried rice and try to come early when it's not too packed

  • Alexa W

An absolute gem! The owner is the sweetest and the food is consistently fantastic! We have friends and family that always want to go when they come to visit. It’s a very small interior but I’ve never had to wait for a seat. I usually grab it on my way home from work and it’s still hot when I eat it 15 minutes later.

I eat here at least twice a week. It is family owned and operated. The food is absolutely delicious. I haven't had better Thai food anywhere else and their prices are very reasonable. It's bad when Dannah and I walk in and they greet us by name though, huh? You will not be disappointed if you eat here.

This small but popular eatery is family owned and operated. The family works well together as a team and the result is spectacular. The portions are generous, authentic, and full of flavor. I love the food here and have many favorites. I highly suggest Chai Thai for everyone who is a fan of Thai food.

I was excited to try this place after seeing the high rating. I was extremely disappointed. I ordered the pad see ew with pork and asked for spicy (3/3). What I got was a flavorless mess. Not only was it not spicy, there was no flavor whatsoever. The veggies tasted steamed and the noodles were bland.

Best Thai food in Portland. Seating is limited, so be ready to wait or order for takeout. Well worth it though; my favorites here are the Massaman Curry with scallops, and the Pad Thai with tofu and a small side of peanut sauce. Servers are friendly and wonderful as well. Highly recommended!

Been coming here for years. Moved to Vancouver and cannot find any restaurants portland or Vancouver that even come close to this food. Paul best all around chef, cook. Joy and mama and the rest of the family make you feel so welcome here. You will not be disappointed. Love this place!

  • Aaran Linhart

This place is absolutely the best thai I've ever had! The Pork Larb and the Eggplant Lovers are my favorite! My parents were looking for a good thai place in Portland and I just so happened to find it for them on my last visit! Now its a must every time I make the trip up from Medford!

  • Jacob R

I lived around here for years and never noticed this place. From the outside, it doesn't look welcoming. On the inside, it's great. The person serving was very friendly and accommodating. The food was fantastic. It was very good and came quick. Don't let the outside fool you.

  • Sean O'Sullivan

Stopped by for dinner and was very happy with the meal. It is a nice little family owned restaurant that a true hidden gem in east Portland. I ordered the pad Thai and it was all perfect, noodles were done just right and it had a great taste with just the right amount of heat

Little hole in the wall shop that you will DEFINITELY miss if you're not paying attention but it's like a golden needle in a haystack of many many restaurants around Gresham. I absolutely love their yellow curry and have it at least once a week. Very decently priced as well.

  • Suzanne Abril

I’ve eaten there twice now and I love it. Pad Thai was wonderful! It’s a little “hole in the wall”. The restaurant, as you go eastbound it’s next to what looks like an old gas station. Very small door to see while driving. I know you can use google but landmarks are good.

  • Dylan Kuzmich

Was looking for somewhere to eat on my lunch and came upon this place. Let me start by saying this is some of the best Thai food I’ve had, the service on top of that was great. Unique little place that you’d never expect food of this quality! Can’t wait to stop by again!

  • Liz Bellows

Amazing food! You can adjust the spice levels, and everything tastes like you imagine it would. A little cramped, but that only adds to the charm. Plus, you can watch the chef work his magic, with all his sauces on a wall combined in the ladle before going over the food

  • Yuriy Borishkevich

I love getting Thai food to-go here. This place has awesome Thai food but is very small and has about 5 tiny tables for seating and usually fills up especially around lunch and dinner. Can be a wait for to-go food as well so order well in advance, worth the wait though.

  • Alex Kvach

Delicious! Anyone who loves good Thai food needs to eat here. Everyone was very nice, service was quick and the food is well priced with huge portions. This is a place I never would have walked into based on the outside appearance, but I am so glad we ate there!

We really miss you guys. We moved to Texas about 8 months ago, and let me tell you... Thai food is nothing like Chai Thai here. Hell, I've never had anything as consistently good as Chai Thai. I'm half considering moving back to Portland just for you guys.

  • Garon Fabulous

I used to love this place but the last 2 times I have been here they are closed to dine in even though google maps says they have dine in available.

Lots of local customers here. Great for to go order since their place is really tiny. The dish taste good but a bit small in size. Maybe it's lunch special. They cook super fast. I was sitting besides the cook and I can tell they are very very efficient.

Probably my favorite Thai place for the food alone but the family that runs it are some of the nicest people around. They me and my friends by sight, they nicknamed us, and they just treat us really well, almost like family. And the food is amazing!!!!!

  • Van Duong

Best Thai food I've ever had and the price is affordable! My favorites are the Egg plant lover, Pad Kee Mao with Tofu, and Pineapple Curry. It's easily missed because it is a very small diner, but once you'very tried the food, you'll be coming back!

  • Jessica Butcher

This little place has the best Thai food in Portland. A Thai family owns the business. The cook "Pah" is very friendly and knows many of the customers by name. Lunch runs around $7-10. I haven't ordered one thing that I didn't like off their menu.

The absolute best Thai food you can find in a large radius. It's a tiny little hole in the wall, easy to miss. I would drive hundreds of miles just to get a taste of more of their food. Family owned, consistent flavor as there is only one chef.

  • Dennis Mansfield

Great food. Had the mussaman chicken. Was very flavorful. Quick service.

The most delicious Thai food I've ever had. I've tried many different Thai places and none can compare to this place. I haven't found one place better. The owner is fantastic and the service is great. My favorite spot to eat on any occasion.

  • nicholas kane

I tried their shrimp pad Thai for $13. The pad Thai was pretty bland and there was only 4 tiny shrimp that were grossly over cooked. Very disappointing.

Hole in the wall places have the best food! I have been coming here for years and feel that they have some of the best Thai food in Portland. Strongly encourage you to try the Pad Ke Mao, my favorite, but everything is very good.

  • Sara Dolph

Large portions, very friendly staff, varying levels of spiciness to choose from. Some of the best Thai food in Portland, hands down. Can't count how many times I've been here, and I've never had a single thing to complain about.

The place kinda small like a little house turn to restaurant, it’s not a good place to chill. The foods is ok but I believe over price for dishes.

Best Thai in my area. Love the curry and pad Thai. Salad rolls always fresh. BEST PEANUT SAUCE I HAVE EVER HAD. So lucky to have them just down the street, parking is difficult, but can park around corner.worth it. Open M-F.

  • Nicole Peterson

Amazing hole in the wall spot here in Portland. The pricing is amazing and the portions are big and tasty. I'm celiac and they always cater to my needs and its nice to know they care to take care of their customers.
