Chinatown Bakery is a hidden gem located in London's bustling Chinatown. While this bakery offers a range of delectable treats, the sponge cakes are the real standout. The sponge cakes at Chinatown Bakery are truly delightful. They're soft, fluffy, and simply melt away in your mouth, leaving a deliciously sweet and satisfying taste. It's hard to stop at just one, as they're just that good. Overall, if you're a fan of sponge cakes, you won't be disappointed by the offerings at Chinatown Bakery. While the bakery may be small and unassuming, the quality of the treats on offer is truly top-notch. If you find yourself in the area, be sure to stop by and try these melt-in-your-mouth sponge cakes for yourself.

Visited on 8 February. As someone who misses South-East Asian flavours and baked goods, I was happy to find out that they sold Pandan Chiffon cakes here! It was super fluffy, moist and delicious. The pandan flavour definitely brought back memories of home for me and I definitely would’ve bought more if I wasn’t living outside of London. I also bought their Plain Pandan Bun which I unfortunately did find a few pieces of egg shell in one of the buns. Not a major flaw but just a note to be cautious. Overall, I would come back for the pandan chiffon cake for sure and maybe I’ll try the taiyaki ice cream parfait when the days are hotter.

Lovely little bakery with amazing food! We first went there to get the small Taiyaki's (4 for £2.50) and they were SO worth the money. We even went back another day we were in town, because we loved them so much, and additionally took some other pastries. Definitely recommended. Do note it can get busy quick, as it's super small, but they handle things pretty quick so a long wait didn't happen.

I always go to the larger Newport place branch. But today, I just happened to visit this one. I haven't been to this shop since their refit. The new shop is far too narrow for customers. It was so packed but their products are, of course, always very good. 3 stars because the young gentleman who was the cashier got somehow impatient while I was ordering some tayaiki ice cream, and he started tapping his nails on the counter as a sign of impatience which I thought was not very professional at aĺl. It is a shame.

An array of assorted baked goods,Wow! Tried the Pandan Sponge cake my goodness look at the size of that --a slice is bigger than my hand. This cake is very airy and light. Wished it had more cream filling in the middle and more of that Pandan flavor which was almost missing. Card payments are accepted in this bakery.I would love to try their ice creams nextime I am back. The mooncakes on the other hand were a bit expensive. Shame. :(

I bought the taiyaki ice cream(macha and also vanilla). I added another one to the bag, I forgot the name, but it was like glutinous flour with coconut desiccant, and the inside had a lovely peanut. It tasted like a similar favourite back home, but here it was bigger. The taiyaki ice cream was there for the taste. The matcha has the right balance of flavour, and the vanilla, I believe, tastes the same as the typical vanilla flavour.

The bakery items were so fresh and almost every item tasted amazing . The pandan cakes were incredibly fluffy and perfect. Everything was affordable and good prices for London. No wonder this place is often busy. The ice cream was great but very messy, needed lots of tissue for it.

This place is a hidden gem!! Not only is it an amazing bakery with delicious cakes and breads, they also sell amazing ice cream in fish shaped waffle cones at the back, which they make right there in front of you!! You can choose either vanilla or green tea flavour, or go for a mix! You get a chocolate wafer tube stuck in the top to finish it off. Very friendly and helpful staff!!

The only thing that describes my fund to this shop is that whenever I go to London City centre, I will definitely go to this shop and buy a spongy cake (pandan chiffon cake). It costs £2.

The green tea ice cream is really unique dessert. The fish shaped cone makes it exciting. Having said that it has bitterness of green tea preserved and it is not for everyone. There is a vanilla option too.

My favourite bakery! They have lots of breads and cakes from childhood. Pork bun, wife cake, red bean bun and more. Bread quality is great and the price is good ranging from £1.60-£2.50 I think. They also sell classic Hong Kong milk tea in single serving or family serving. Fresh tofu and soy bean milk. Staff are very friendly and efficient

  • Rav

Quick service. Lovely fresh treats. Very good competitive prices which was enticing. I paid £4 for a mixed matcha and vanilla ice cream. Wasn’t keen on the matcha part but that’s down to personal preference. The vanilla is perfect. Will be back to try the cakes, they have so much on offer here!

Postres japoneses super ricos. Probe 4 tipos de bizcocho con vainilla, de coco,y peanut butter super esponjosos. Los peces rellenos de custard (crema pastelera) un poco pasados no estaban frescos. Un poco costosos para lo que son 4 mini peces.

  • Sam I

I couldn’t believe how rude the staff were, shouted at and told to move aside for asking questions about their Taiyaki. Ended up buying 4 small custard and one large Nutella. Couldn’t believe how expensive it was. Not going back.

  • Samuel Barnett

Bought a passion fruit kinda of spongy cake and a supposedly vanilla flavored roll, they were just tasteless. The roll fills your mouth with fluffy spongy cake filled with cheap cream, 500g of rubbish really. 10 quid in the bin!

Lovely little bakery. They have a nice variety of buns and cakes which are all very delicious. I have also gotten the taiyaki with mixed vanilla and matcha ice cream which was very delicious and affordable.

  • Lisa S

Absolutely no plant-based / vegan options whatsoever... While it is so easy to switch eggs and milk in most of the available product recipes. Very disappointed... Staff also quite rude to be honest

  • JM G.

Cakes light on their feet with cream filling as clouds. Lovely delicious fresh bakery. Rude nasty weathered staff; incongruous and an awkward mix of the two. Keep the baker and ditch the checker.

  • Angela C

One star less cause it’s too pricy, or else their buns are the best! Remember to visit them early if you want to have more deletions. The sesame balls, red bean bun with mochi was simply AMAZING!

Fish ice cream is so yummy. The cake was made well. Mini fish filled with delicious ingredients. My new favourite place. Definitely taking my family there for a good treat.

  • Rebecca Randall

Delicate cakes and pastries at an affordable price point for London. Fresh taiyaki (custard filled fish pancakes) made at the front of shop are as delicious as they smell!

  • Rangerz 83

The fish cakes taste good however, the staff is very rude. If the staff can't handle the pressure and the attitude please leave. Never ever going back for the service.

  • Denisa Caňkářová

This bakery is almost always very busy but it’s worth the wait. My only concern is the service as I’ve never met any staff smiling or saying a kind “hello”. Shame.

  • Thomas A. Fung

It's the best bakery in China town ‍♂️ The buns are fantastic. But I'd say it's the cakes that give it the edge. As well as those fish shaped pastries. …

  • Hannah Taylor

Loads of baked goods to choose from. We bought the custard, red bean and nutella taiyaki(s). Prompt service. Everything was reasonably priced and tasted lovely.

Served quickly for the taiyaki and very tasty , quite a queue to get in shop part , though there's a huge selection to choose from.

  • Alex

Nice taiyaki, but the cashier lady is very grumpy. You can get taiyaki of the same level in other places around Chinatown as well.

  • Yulia Kalashnikova

Had Taiyaki with Nutella today. Dough was completely raw. First was heartburn and then all sings of food poisoning

  • Josh

Very good Ice cream in a waffle. Not too expensive compared to surrounding stores. Would reccomend!!!

  • Jay

It was very busy when I went there and the staff were not very friendly when I needed some help.
