Took my dad here for lunch, and ordered 2 curries. 2 girls came in and ordered after us but got served their curries (long) before us. It was obvious they forgot, I think they were also packing take away curries before us aswell, I told them politely we were waiting on our curries and they said they were coming and we soon got them but they made no apology or recognition that they had forgot. Idc that they forgot, things happen, but that they didn't recognise it hurts. It was annoying that staff then started giving complementary donuts on tooth picks to all other customers except us. All other customers were women so it may have been a chivalry thing which I understand and am fine with but considering they screwed us, I feel they should have given us a complementary donut too (There were other minor issues with service). Felt disrespectful. Food was ok, curry was cold (maybe its meant to be cold?) but there is plenty of other food of that standard or better in Newtown. Afterwards I regretted going, I would have preferred to have taken my dad to Budda bowl. It was a bad experience and not worth it, feel like I wasted the occasion, time with my dad and my appetite and would have been better somewhere else.

This is my favourite dish the onigiri plate (available on weekdays, limited quantity, check menu beforehand). If you want this dish I highly recommend to pre order online if possible. Beautiful cafe with delicious food and made with love and care - I have been here several times and love it each time. On the weekend they have sushi ! Hojicha latte was done just the way I like it - simply amazing and their new flavour Yuzu custard doughnut was made to perfection (my other fave is the matcha or red bean ❤️ love Japanese flavours and their menu and better yet everything is vegan. This place really encapsulates the home food feeling and each element is made with love, care and perfection. A true little gem and cutest small business . Please note there is limited seating so at times I have opted for take away and I love coming here! The staff are hard working, nice and I'm so thankful to this place. The owners are so lovely and kind hearted I'll be back!

Sushi rolls were fine, different to usual flavours but nothing that left me wanting to come back and overpriced for the small size and content (mostly just shredded carrot in rice with a small piece of eggplant or tofu). The sourdoughnuts were interesting and nice but again small and not worth the $6. We ordered 3 sushi rolls and 3 doughnuts. 1 of the sushi and 2 of the doughnuts we received were not the flavours we ordred. So 50% of our order was wrong. The incorrect sushi was fixed when I asked the staff. While they were nice about it, they also said they thought it was wrong when they served us. Not sure why they didn't do anything about it themselves then. We took the doughnuts home and were disappointed when we realised we'd been given the wrong flavours. I won't be back and wouldn't recommend it. There are other good and far cheaper japanese restaurants. Other reviews seem to note the small portions too. Not sure why they have 4.7 stars. Perhaps it's the whole gluten free, vegan thing.

One of the best vegetarian places that I’ve been to! A friend introduced me to this place and I’ve loved my experience here. I got to try the onigiri plate and i was blown away by the quality of the dish and the level of detail and attention that goes into making it. The onigiri was lovely and I was very surprised by the tempura and the complimentary green tea salt. Didn’t think it could work so well that I was genuinely mind blown. Definitely recommend trying this during the weekday! I also got to try out the yuzu custard doughnut, sweet potato brownie and the hojicha latte which was just as amazing and worth trying it out. The sourdoughnut was sweet and which was balanced out by the hojicha latte. Will definitely be visiting again to have more of the onigiri plate and sour doughnuts

What the heck! Service was extremely slow, slowest I’ve experienced. Whilst waiting for my order to arrive, I noticed: 1) the table next to ours, their lattes came when they were about to finish eating 2) a man has been waiting for his order prior to my arrival. Then a 25min wait on top just for 4 drinks 3) a customer waited 20 mins for his takeaway donut, however asked for a refund after being told he needed to wait 5 minutes more The communal water jug was not replenished so I was parched whilst waiting for my two lattes and one katsu curry. I waited for 45mins for my food. I also ordered two sourdough donuts whilst waiting for the curry and lattes. That itself took 15mins before it was on our table. Not sure why everything took so long, considering they were only offering two dishes on the menu aside from doughnuts. Sushi was not available that day. Katsu curry was tasty but definitely not worth the wait. Sourdough donuts were meh, pricey for the size and the lattes were good but again, not worth the wait.

  • Tracy

I have been here a few times for the sourdoughnuts but today I was finally able to try the weekday tempura and onigiri lunch plate special which was extremely delicious. The sourdoughnuts are already amazing and unique and I thought unbeatable, but they recently brought out a new sweet potato sourdoughnut which is equally, if not more delicious. Growing up, I had severe allergies to eggs, dairy and nuts which made eating out difficult and sometimes stressful. That's why I can relate to the story behind comeco and I admire their hard work to develop delicious foods that meets their philosophy of 'all people, with or without dietary restrictions, could have the same food and spend good times together.' I will definitely come back :) (Edited due to spelling error)

Absolutely one of my favourite Japanese Cafe. They have one of the healthiest lunch menus in Newtown. My favourite is tempura and onigiri plate as well as hojicha/ matcha latte. Never knew vegan Japanese cuisine could taste so good. Convenient that they sometimes open at night for desserts and drinks (need to try their sugarfree matcha gelato), Comeco is my go to place for a late coffee when working on the weekends. Apart from food and drinks, the owner and the team members are very caring and polite, I remember one time during my visit in winter they provided customers with blankets, so thoughtful of them. Will definitely return!!

Very delicious donuts, even more magnificent vegan /plant-based sushi. The place is quite small but sit through a lot of people. On weekends they have sushi and donuts, on weekdays only donuts. All gluten free AND plant based, heavenly! I would recommend their glazed donuts instead of filled donuts if you are not a big fan of super sweet things, but if finishing a big piece of cake is your thing, you should definitely get the filled ones. Their glazing, especially the raspberry one is to try for. They are also Sydney Vegan Market participant, only during that time they sell donut skewers which are even more crunchy and puffy than the regular sized donuts they sell. Sushi here is soooo delicious, burst of flavour and satisfying. I tried the first three flavours that came out, should have ordered more. Yum!

Comeco has been one of my favourite cafes since they opened, not just because of the delicious food, but also because of the lovely people who work there. The owners, Masa and Yu, are always so kind, friendly, and welcoming, you can see the love, dedication and passion that they put into their cafe. Everything served at the cafe is organic and made from scratch. They serve the best sushi I have ever had (the aburi eggplant roll is my favourite) and their drinks always come at the perfect temperature, with the perfect balance of sweetness and frothiness. They also have special menu items on weekends (the chocolate cornets are amazing). Thank you, Masa and Yu, for always being so kind and for making such delicious food!

Stumbled with this chic vegan cafe in Newtown. Although the place is not huge, it comes with huge vibes. Service was fast and efficient. I ordered a weekday lunch special set $19.80 with adds on $3.50 vegan karaage and $5 sourdoughnut. I also ordered ice coffee which a bit weak for my liking and a tiny serve of lotus chips for $6.50. The sourdoughnut was quite chewy. It tasted quite strange for me. Maybe I’m just a fans of normal donuts I heard the sweet potato one was better. Overall it was enjoyable meal, especially the onigiri rice on the set and karaage. The cafe is also environmentally friendly.

One of my favourite places to eat, the food is so clean and delicious. Every time I eat from here I feel happy and satisfied. The food makes you feel good and energised. I have not tried everything on the menu yet but my top picks are the Smoky BBQ miso roll and Jalapeño and eggplant chilli roll. The shokupan bread is incredible, taste is beautiful and so light and fluffy. Falafels are also one of my favourites as well as the matcha and hojicha latte. The first time I tried the sourdough donuts I was so impressed!! The best donut I’ve ever had. The staff are also very professional and friendly. I always love eating at Comeco oods and they are a must try.

  • Lydia C.

We first met the comeco team at the Sydney vegan market and as someone that is living gluten- and dairyfree I fell in love with the donuts. You can really tell how passionate this family is about what they are doing. Out of their own history and experience they are not only creating food from scratch with the best possible ingredients, but they are also health advocates, explaining people how they create the food and for what reason ( rice sourdough, plenty of ferments, organic ingredients). I absolutely love this! Please go and support this local small business, as they are really making a difference and AWESOME donuts (passion fruit is my fav!)

Our first choice for food whenever we’re in Newtown. The doughnut are delicious, and there are so many options for those with dietary requirements. Completely vegan, and gluten free! To top it all off, the owner is lovely and always welcoming!

Came with with a group of 3 and was pleasantly surprised (didn't actually realise it was vegan till I arrived). Really lovely staff and owner! I think we got the wrong sushi but it was still delicious. Curry was tasty, though wasn't a fan of the texture of the donuts. A shame we couldn't get the set menu that's only on weekdays but looking forward to come back for that. My friend said she would come back for the matcha latte (cold) too!

Comeco is one of my favourites! I always get the Onigiri plate with vegan karage chicken and a donut! oh and the yuzu lemonade is so perfect on a hot day! the original sourdonut is so good and to me it tastes like a zeppoli! which I havent had in years because I'm coeliac. Its so yummy that I often run into my other gluten free pals here haha.

Comeco is such a lovely spot in Newtown that offers an entirely gluten free and vegan menu. This is my second visit and both visits have been an amazing experience. The sushi here is some of the best in Sydney. We got the Sukiyaki curry roll, jalapeño eggplant roll and the monthly special Agedashi roll, all were incredible. The donuts were so yummy as well, we got a sesame custard and lemon peel custard donut. The owner is always so friendly and greets everyone with a warm smile. Highly recommend this spot!

I am coeliac vegetarian and it is very rare for me to be able to eat everything on the menu so I had so many options here. I've also never been able to get good GF sushi. I had the eggplant teriyaki sushi and I was just so so happy! Super duper yummy and the sauce was so good. I also loved the glazed donut. Yes, it may be a little bit pricey as another reviewer said but it is 100% worth it as it is very hard to get quality vegan GF food that tastes that good. I wish that they were also open for dinner and had sushi on weekdays too.

Amazing place for vegans who can't eat gluten either. Great consistency and an amazing ability to improve over time. It takes a very humble person to accept feedback and take it on board with a friendly attitude. Well done. Yummm food as well and peaceful atmosphere.

I love sourdough donuts and this place makes the best ones I've had in Sydney. Warm, crispy and chewy donuts, freshly made on order, all vegan. My favourites include mocha and black sesame (not too sweet so there is depth of flavour) and Japanese curry (perfect sweet and savoury combo). Authentic Japanese options available as well with delicious matcha and hojicha donuts. Also recommend eggplant vegan sushi (they taste as good as they look) Very friendly service and their new opening hours makes it easier to visit.

So awesome! I only just discovered Comeco recently through instagram, so popped in today to use up my last Dine In Voucher, ahhh man what a lunch! I got their Agedashi Tofu & Onigiri Plate with Vegan Chicken Karaage, plus a Lemon Peel Custard Sourdoughnut and a Match Latte. Since going Vegan 4 years ago I haven't really had much Japanese, so todays experience was incredibly satisfying, looking forward to my next visit. Do yourself a favour and visit these guys, you won't be disappointed.

  • Alexandra Valentino

A Gluten Free, Organic and Vegan Japanese Cafe run by the sweetest couple. Thank you for the delicious, ethical and nutritious food. I can't wait to visit again soon. They have more offerings on the weekend and their sushi is worth the price. I also had the pleasure of eating their sourdough doughnuts in all the flavours (I'm from interstate so took the opportunity to try everything) and it lives up to the hype. Please support this wonderful business. Highly recommend.

After the first lockdown.. I attended and got an iced matcha latte.. It took a little too long for my liking for me to get my iced matcha latte. But I've been back several times despite the wait times. Goddam, the donuts !!!! Do yourself a favour and try them !!!!!! I love the mugs the hot drinks come out with. The hojicha, the matcha, the black sesame - hot or cold - they're all so good, its like being in Japan but without paying for the flights and accomodation..

Another vegan gem on King Street! Extremely polite & welcoming staff. The food is nothing short of wonderful and the freshly made donuts are simply delicious. Even if you’re staying in the Sydney CBD, it’s only a 20-ish minute bus ride to the top of King Street, then take a wander along to take in all there is to offer before stopping off at this delightful café.

So, so, so good!! We ordered sushi, curry, a hojicha latte and 8 donuts. I loved everything except maybe the sushi, that was ok and I wouldn’t order it again. But everything else was superb and delicious. The donuts are definitely a bit different thanks to the sourdough but really good in their own way. Not too sweet for me either. Also gluten free and vegan…will be back for sure!

What's not to love about a doughy yet crispy, melt in your mouth yet textural warm gooey gluten free and vegan donut! They are delish. Although small and about $6 each, these treats are just full of homely goodness. They also do a savoury Japanese Curry one and offer some vegan gf take away dinners! The staff are lovely and its well located about 7-10 minutes walk from Newtown or St Peter's train station.

I ordered some goodies from Comeco to surprise my partner for his lockdown birthday. The customer service provided by Yu and his team was amazing, quick reply always and lots of communication on when they would be delivered so we weren’t waiting around all day. We ordered the lotus chips, falafels and a few donuts. But the sushi was the stand out for me. Definitely the best vegan sushi in Sydney.

The best gluten free donuts in Sydney, their curry and sushi are wonderful. You can tell a lot of love has gone into the food; everything is vegan, gluten free and shellfish free but you wouldn’t be able to tell. They use fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Lovely family business and always welcoming with great service. One of my favourite places to go in Newtown for food and coffee.

  • Larry

Plum sourdough donut ($6.50) & aburi eggplant teriyaki ($15). Unfortunately the sushi was too expensive for something so simple. Filling was just carrot and cucumber topped with a thin slice of eggplant. Portion size also small. On the bright side, staff are really friendly and its family owned/run so always happy to support. Would probably stick to the curry or other dishes though :(

  • Gabriella

The greatest gluten free and vegan food ever! I discovered their doughnuts at the Sydney Vegan Market and couldn't believe I could eat them as gluten free is hard to find! The vegan sushi, onigiri, curry, bread, lattes and doughnuts are so delicious. The owners and staff are such beautiful, kind and caring people and you always feel welcomed and taken care of when dining with them.

Found this nice place. Good service and delicious food. I wouldn't mind coming here again. I only gave 4/5 stars, because they gave my food to a couple who came later than me. They ordered one of the same foods I did and were happy about how fast the service was. The staff realised their mistake right after and said my food will come in 5 minutes. The cooking is fast.

Love this place, my new favourite vegan place in newtown! staff is lovely and everything is yummy : curry, sweet potato brownies, donuts, nice teas. love that they’re trying to use organic products as much as possible! the only thing to improve would be to have brown rice sushi. thanks a lot for providing healthy, delicious organic and vegan food !

Lovely range of food, especially the doughnuts! Staff are all wonderful and kind, very comfortable environment. My sibling has some tight dietary requirements, so they're very happy to have a place like this nearby that they can treat themselves to! I'll be sure to try and bring all my mates from Canberra next time we're up in Sydney. ごちそうさまでした!

A lovely new addition to south end newtown! Went in for the curry donut but it’s a weekend item at the moment. It’s unlike anything I’ve had before — crunchy, chewy and a bit sour. A lovely family run business and I’ll return to try others. Edited to add: Tried the mochi set during lunar new year — very unique! Can’t wait for next year

Great sushi, mushroom roll was just a touch lacking in flavour, the eggplant was excellent. Sourdoughnuts were quite good, both the cinnamon and chocolate had a jam taste to them, on the costly side for the small size though. Very stoic server behind the counter but no complaints!

The food was good and it was rather pricey. Also, service was pretty slow. Good to go there to try but I won’t be going back regularly.

I love Comeco! We had the most delicious bento boxes where every single item was so flavourful and left you salivating for more. The black sesame custard donut was also exceptional. Excellent and friendly service too! Definitely recommended and will be back.

  • Emma Bronte

Really delicious, flavourful & fresh vegan sushi rolls. We had 2 sushi rolls, the tempura, matcha late & 2 of the sourdough donuts to takeaway. Great service, healthy & super tasty. We will definitely be back!

Donuts are made fresh to order. The sourdough ones was a bit dense and heavy, just go for the sweet potato based donut for a lighter texture (flavors like matcha, hojicha etc were good) Will try the food menu next time

Came here with friends for brunch and loved the relaxing atmosphere. Nice honest family business, authentic japanese team. Vegan sushi and sourdoughnuts were delicious, keen to try some more menu items. Unique little joint! Will be back soon.

Legit the best gluten free donuts I have ever eaten. I'm from interstate, but I would come back to Newtown for those donuts alone.

Exceptional doughnuts - one of the best I’ve ever had. They make all doughnut orders fresh, and they consistency and flavours are incredible. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a sweet treat (that just happens to be healthy too!)

Classic and delicious food. There is a small (but delicious) menu (quality over quantity). It's all gluten free (we've been multiple times and can verify it's good for coeliacs).

Would have been nice to have more than 3 pieces of “katsu” in the Japanese katsu curry. Food and drinks were tasty but service was quite slow unfortunately.

Super super tasty vegan, gluten free Japanese food. The donuts are deliciousssss oh lord and I’ve also had their curries and coffees (so goood!!!) only downside is that it is a litttttle pricey but definitely worth it! …

I once enjoyed this Japanese vegan cafe but I'm disappointed to note that it has become untidy and unfriendly. Despite the nice lunch, the overall experience fell short.

The donuts I had were absolutely brilliant. Can't wait to try the sushi too, will do that on my next visit. Very friendly service as well. Highly recommend Comeco especially if you're gluten & dairy sensitive like me.

  • K Marie

The best vegan sushi I ever had! They have a good variety which you can't really get from other Japanese restaurants. My husband and sister-in-law who are also vegetarian enjoy their sushi so much! Highly recommended.

  • Michael Korganow

VERY DELICIOUS GF Japanese doughnuts - best I've found so far in Sydney. Great range of flavours to choose from and the Katsu curry is a excellent choice for a main meal to balance the sweetness from dessert.

  • Phillip M

Doughnuts and the curry sushi roll is amazing. Staff are amazing and one of the best places for people with food allergies in Sydney. A special place for me since I'm allergic to milk and nuts. Thanks guys!

  • D monkey

Happy review here, delicious food and probably one of the best coffee and alternative (to coffe) you can have. 5 star service, super welcoming and friendly stuff. Thanks again for the beautiful experience.

  • Stefan Williams

Absolutely delicious Japanese food, everything is vegan from the sushi to the katsu curry, they even do sourdoughnuts that are crazy good. It's busy, for all the right reasons. Highly recommended.

  • Agnes Sara Kuziel

Really surprised by their tart doughnuts, all are gluten free, some are vegan. Love the authentic Japanese flavours and techniques. They are so unique and different, nothing in Sydney like them.

  • Shandee Milla

The donuts are so delicious. My favourites are the Japanese curry donut and the cinnamon glazed donut. I also tried two types of sushi, curry and eggplant ones were absolutely amazing …

Awesome sushi and doughnuts we had BBQ miso sushi, apple cinnamon doughnut and a brownie. Don't sleep on the brownies. They might be my favorite of them 3 ☺️ …

  • Amelia Hallett

Amazing doughnuts! The rice bread is also really good, really fluffy and soft like milk bread but still gluten-free and vegan! I also recommend trying the Katsu Curry.

  • nick fox

Amazing place! The lunch special is a gorgeous mix of Japanese classics! Light yet filling! The diversity of flavour on one plate made my day! Will definitely be back!

  • Linden
