A word to the wise. This facility is severely overpriced for what it offers. 1) The equipment displayed other than the bumper plates is not that expensive. 2) The "certification" is a 2 day course for $1000 for the guy running the place-he lists no other education which is pathetic. 3) The amount of free time when you can do your own thing is minimal apparently, looking at the schedule. 4) It is elitist. Why? The person attracted to this type of atmosphere is not in this income bracket, meaning those who like Olympic Lifting are not typically oil company CEOs netting $300K+ per year and as such cannot afford crossfit nonsense in terms of the waste of time on irrelevant cardio and money on "classes". The concept of crossfit is indeed appealing but the actual training goes against safe exercise physiology. It is very difficult to learn olympic lifts safely, perform them, and then recover from them when doing other competing forms of exercise. There is a severe risk of overtraining and a very very big chance of permanent injury to joints. It is difficult enough to isolate each element of each olympic lift, teach it, and then perform it. With this crossfit concept largely untrained persons are expected to not only do high repetitions with the olympic lifts they are to compete against other untrained individuals. This is a case of extreme egotism. It really is sad too. The facility is extremely appealing to me personally. I would never set foot there because I have more academic credentials than the persons running the place, I wouldnt want to me subjected to mandatory "training" aka brainwashing, the cost is insane(around $200 for one month? Seriously?). If the price were reasonable, say $25/month I would strongly consider it, without the classes and I can ask for help when and if I want/need it. As it stands I figure the people running the place must be certifiably insane to have the arrogance to demand such asinine prices. But alas, the fitness industry is unregulated and the insane have free reign. Source of Experience: CSCS, MSc in exercise science, fitness trainer from 1996-2006. Permanently quit from the fitness industry, now work as a medical professional.
CrossFit Calgary quite literally saved my life. This is the most amazing community of people i have ever had the privilege of working out with. The coaches care about teaching you proper technique and making sure that you are using it, not adding more and more weight just for the sake of getting a PR. Everyone pushes each other to be better, and the community of people is a mix of male and female, young and old, experienced and beginners. I wish i had the courage to try crossfit years ago when i first discovered it, so dont be intimidated to try it - it will change your entire outlook on fitness and working out. The owners care about the people who come to CrossFit Calgary and bend over backwards to take care of their community. You get individual attention and help, scaling options based on your fitness level and if you have any weaknesses (bad knees, bad back, etc.) CrossFit is as hard as you want to make it for yourself, and the community is what will keep you coming back day after day. I had worked out at several "big box" and even other boutique gym's before finding CrossFit Calgary, and none of those can compare to the community, personal coaching, and progress in my own personal fitness that i have experienced with CFC. We celebrate each other's progress and pick each other up when we struggle. You might try CrossFit for the fitness, but this community is what sets it apart from any other program/gym.
Signed up for an intro class and have loved it, even before day 1. Aly was very accommodating when I was purchasing the passes and answered every email promptly. Our instructors for each class are awesome. They go through each and every exercise before it is performed and explain how to do it safely, what not to do and the possible ways you can hurt yourself IF done incorrectly. The coaches then come around and correct you and give you pointers on how you can improve. You aren't just thrown into a class and expected to do it unsafely. They would rather you take your time and focus on form than worry about the clock. Anyone debating the cost should think of how much $ you would pay per month with a trainer vs unlimited sessions per month in CrossFit. Easily justifiable.
This place gave me a sense of family. Compared to any other gym experience I’ve had, people actually speak to you at this gym. Although CrossFit is difficult and not for everyone, I enjoyed the feeling of being in this together. If you felt like you were over exerted - well everyone was in the same boat. We helped motivate one another. I only left because it was too far after my move and it made the cost no longer logical. However, I really miss the people and the unique approach to working out. Highly recommend that everyone at least give it a good try.
I have 8 passes (Sessions) to use for this location, but I am working out of Calgary and can not use them and will expire September. I called them and described the situation and asked them to refund or transfer to other people, so I do not loose money. Unfortunately they refused any help and I am going to loose $160 just because they are not willing to help. So, my recommendation is not to buy the passes in advance !!!!!!!1
I love this place. The coaching is exceptional. Don't listen to the people complaining about the price of Crossfit. The truth is if you are buying time in a gym, there are cheaper ways to go. If you are buying results, I can't think of a cheaper, more affective way to achieve them. I've been going a year and am completely addicted. Great people, exceptional coaching and amazing results. The end.
Stopped by for a drop in. Finishing my work out at 3:55, 4 x 40cals for time on assault bike. Was told I couldn't finish my final set because it was too noisy for the class that was underway. Pretty unimpressed considering the coach was ignoring the fact that 4 of her students were using ropes 2ft too long for themselves.
I thought I knew everything about working out before I showed up. Turns out I was wrong the coaches at CFC are more than qualified. They are amazing ! If you are looking to get the best bang for your buck I would recommend CFC, their student rate is by far the best I've seen at a crossfit gym. 10/10
Very kind patient helpful staff, so supportive , really great environment. Like a little family, everybody cares for one another ♥️ Thank you , I really don't have the words to describe my gratitude
Super open gym and well lit. The programming is diverse. The coaches and members are the best in the city - hands down!
