Download Cemetery Plan HISTORY INFORMATION Delhi War Cemetery was created in 1951 when graves from many cemeteries in northern India were moved into the site to ensure their permanent maintenance. Among them are graves from cantonment cemeteries in Allahabad, Cawnpore, Dehra Dun and Lucknow. There are now 1,022 Commonwealth casualties of the Second World War buried, or commemorated by special memorial, in this cemetery together with a number of war graves of other nationalities, mostly Dutch. In 1966, 99 First World War burials were moved into the cemetery from Nicholson Cemetery, Kashmir Gate, Delhi, so that their permanent maintenance could be assured. Delhi War Cemetery also contains the DELHI 1914-18 MEMORIAL, which was built to commemorate 153 casualties buried in Meerut Cantonment Cemetery whose graves could no longer be maintained. However, in recent years, the Commission has re-instated these graves. More than 25,000 servicemen of the forces of undivided India died during the Second World War in non-operational zones, for example while serving with regimental depots or with other static units. Their remains were accorded the last rites and disposal required by their various religions and their names are commemorated at memorials in the capital cities of India and Pakistan. The DELHI 1939-45 WAR MEMORIAL forms the entrance to Delhi War Cemetery and an identical memorial stands in Karachi War Cemetery. No names appear on the memorials but a Roll of Honour at each site, one in Hindi, the other in Urdu, record the names of those commemorated.

My sister Barbara and I visited from Australia our father's grave NORMAN JOSEPH FREDERICK WESTHOFF in November 2016 and were so impressed and warmly greeted by the gentleman in charge whose card I cannot find. The cemetery was so beautifully kept and so peaceful. Once again as seems to be the case we had great difficulty in our driver's ability to find it and were not able to take advantage of having a cup of tea with the most charming Indian gentleman because our time was limited. We never knew our father as we were too young but felt closer to him than we had ever felt in this place of contentment. Thank you to all the people whom maintain this memorial on behalf of all the loved ones these men left behind.

A Respectfull place to pay homage to our Great person here. This place is quiet here. This place tells the history of many Braves. But nowadays many youths are visiting this place to do Photography and performing stunts to capture some good videos and snaps to upload in Facebook and Youtube. This is unseen by Delhi police totally as nobody roam here as this is a Defence land.
This is the site of the graves of 1,154 service personnel who served the British Empire during the First and Second World Wars, Burials by nation: United Kingdom: 941 Indian: 152 Dutch: 30 Canadian: 15 Australian: 10 New Zealand: 5 Polish: 1 Burials by war: World War I: 101 World War II: 1053
A great place to remember those who sacrifice of their life for us. Place is well maintained. Very clean and peaceful. There are hundred's of soldier grave who left us in second world war. Very less people know about this great place. Graveyard has lots of greenery and lovely flowers..
It is so sad that this war cemetery is not visited by our youth. You just have to compare with Arlington in USA and see our respect towards fallen soldiers. We have left war memorials to only Military. Any nation which does not respect soldiers does not get heroes.
This is a perfect example of how the CWGC can manage its cemeteries to an unbeatable standard. A more respectful and well manicured Cemetery you will not find in Delhi. Thank you to the CWGC and the local team for looking after this site so well.
I visit there in September 2017 when we have our map reading competition there in the front of war cemetery...I was the part of Uttar Pradesh directorate thal sainik camp team ... A palce to remember
All people says that there are ghosts but I can't feel anything here And there are the cemetery of the soldiers who dies during saves our lives so how can they harm us.
