Don't bother selling your secondhand books here - just donate them to vinnies down the road. I rang Elizabeth's Bookshop and they told me that they purchaced books for $2-3 and then I lugged about three boxes of books there (roughly 50/60 books) and they offered me $20 for half of them, which is less than $1 per book. This place is more or less the only secondhand book store on the main strip of King street (there are a few more down towards Saint Peters). I've been going there for years off and on - picking things up on occasion. Though, to be honest, the price point for most books means that I'd prefer to buy them new. The best thing about this place is being able to casually browse before you head off to the cinema. edit: I can see the reply form the owner but can't reply directly. My problem is not that you buy books at a particular price point, it's that you told me one thing and than did another. You wasted my time and effort. Waiting in this store before you go to the cinema or a café is still the best thing about this place.

I was walking down Kings Street the other night and was delighted to see a book shop open. It was Elizabeth's. What a great time to be open. And nicely unconventional for Australia. More like Athens or Asia to have shops open at night. I walked in, and in just one section chose The Andy Warhol diaries, Silas Marner and an Irvine Welsh novel. I went back the following week with my camera. This is a huge but cosy second hand bookshop with an amazing stock. Like the other reviews say, you need lots of time. The books also are very fairly priced. The staff were smiley and friendly, and the customers earthy and interesting. None of this like, eyes fixed on a computer screen, while we type an essay, to see if the book you want is in print kind of thing here! Face to face customer assistance by staff who obviously read and enjoy books.

Been loyal customer for many years.I have spent huge$$$.When not bought any books am IgnoredFriendly service is missing! After years of being a loyal customer, one would expect better!Over places that are only nice to you when you shell out big bucks!Customer service is a skill that is rusty with some! Been back to bookshop, an spent$$$ on books. When I go in an do not buy books,am ignored,an treated coldly!Amazed when retail owners treat customers badly, yet 'friendly' when we 'open' our wallets!! Alway's been polite an friendly to all staff members whenever been in store! Your reply demonstratesTRUTH of what I have said!!Glad many(Owners/Managers) of my reviews appreciate 'honest comments' an learn&improve!.Instore overheard two female staff' members 'joking 'about overcharging customers prices on books!

I was informed by your staff that the exchange & return policy on your website, does not apply to your business in-store. Also got told that there is no exchange or return policy in store. This is unlawful under ACL. Two days ago, I purchased a book only to realise i already had the same one, return to the store within 1 hours since the time of purchase on the same day. i'm okay with been declined on request to return, but i really dont understand the decline on my request to exchange to another book of same or lower value or a credit that i can buy another book on the spot. I quoted your return and exchange policy online to your staff, only to be told your policy is not practised. and i could just donate it back to your shop if i have the same one. Please explain why your own policy is not valid?

Nothing better than a good late night secondhand bookshop. Open until 10m30 every night, good prices and good range with the books well sorted and categorised. Good turnover of stock means it's worth wandering in regularly - walk my dog in every fortnight or so and often find something new. Good general fiction, classics and sci fi sections, tables with lots of books set out to inspire a new purchase. Also one of the few places that will actually buy books (as long as they fit with their collection), good prices particularly if you swap for voucher - check when the buyer is in though first.

The small space at the entrance, now occupied by a shelf, a brilliant and original idea "Blind date with a book!" I still remembered a black board decades ago with a Quote:" Some novels should not be tossed aside lightly, it should be done so with a great force." Disregarding the time difference and by contrast with real life blind dating, it seems to make sense. More power to the management for its authenticity and the very friendly staff. Walking past the store without a fail adds a positive vibe to the experience of Newtown and our beloved King Street. Thank You

  • Woody's Here.

It was AWESOME. I didn't know how to explain what I was looking for as I haven't read a book in 20 years, so I used single words, Manifesting, Spiritual, Thomas Harris,ah... Anne Rice. I was directed to sections by a lovely lady, then I remembered what I was after The Art of War, she led me straight to it. Super helpful and friendly, I need to go back and get more books from her, she knows her stuff, wish I could remember her name, I'll ask when I go back and update this post. Found my book store ❤️

I LOVE this bookstore! They have dates with books for both adults and children which is an amazing concept because you're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover. By choosing the short description of the book on the outside, you make it very personal and exciting as well.....it's like opening a Christmas present. They have modern books as well as rare gems! They usually also have a sale of 2 for $10 books. I found some great steals there! They also give out a free bookmark with your purchase :)

What a unique bookshop! There are a lot of book genres and it's quite indie and rare to find. Some of them are old, but the the good ones. You'll find interesting and inspiring books right here! I bought the book of Raymond Carver: What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. It's a great book anyway. Elizabeth's Bookshop offer you some books for your blind date! It's so cute and interesting. For you who love to smell the old books and find books you never knew before, you better stop by here!

A 'must drop in' when visiting Newtown. Our teenager wanted to check out the 'Blind Date with a Book' section and we were thankful for a kids and yound adults section so that her 'lucky dip' choice would be age appropriate. She was thrilled to find her book was one she didnt have but definitely on her wishlist. A great adventure in itself. I loved looking through the vintage section, and finding a huge family bible from 1870 that looked like something out of Hogwarts!

Probably one of the worst Natural History “sections” (about 4 books) of any bookshop I’ve ever been to, both here and abroad. Their science section leaves a lot to be desired too, mainly a mish mash of titles that very loosely tie to science. Too be honest the shop isn’t worth trying to find a parking spot to browse. Much better offerings at other stores.

  • Constance Halstead

Best range of books in any bookshop in the entirety of Sydney, and if you get out of this shop without learning a ton from any range of subjects the passionate workers are familiar with, or your ribs intact from the endless laughs that eminate from the place you'd be lucky Incredible environment, incredible staff, incredible store.

  • Caroline

We just bumped into this bookshop while walking down the street. The bookshop is amazing! Full categories collection and the old and rare books are well protected. We are interested in history and war and they have many related vintage books. A must-visit place because you won’t find anything same in a contemporary bookshop.

  • Alexandria E.L

great newtown bookstore! they have a quirky selection of 'blind date books' both for adults, teenagers and kids. staff will let you roam the store for hours on end, as there's just so many books to take in. they stock a large range of genres, and the books aren't as expensive as other bookstores in newtown.

If you're having a moody day, there is no excuse to be grumpy at customers. Your job is to smile and welcome customers. I tried to talk a chubby employee and she made a face like she's disgusted of me. I don't feel comfortable to come back again in the future. Friendly service needs to be working on

  • Francis Ferrera

Before thinking of getting that new book from the shelf, consider waiting a couple weeks. After a few weeks, consider coming down to Elizabeth's Bookstore. I was able to complete my Fable comics collection after dropping by here, saving myself atleast 20 dollars per issue. Great selection altogether

  • Amy

An interesting and well-stocked range of books, but still quite expensive. I wouldn't attempt to trade again with them again....I returned $60 of books I'd purchased there the week before, and two best-sellers in good condition from the bookshop up the road...they offered $12 store credit …

I love this place! Everyone is always so helpful and friendly. I always checked out staff recommendations for new books because they always pick really good ones. The "blind date with a book" setup is also a great idea that I kept coming back for. You can really find some great reads here.

  • Jane KS

The books are a bit pricey for second hand books . If you’d like to sell your books (that may be brand new) , they’ll just give u a $1 for each book (usually) yet the books are sold for a way higher price. Usually I’ll get my books from book depository or better read than dead instead .

  • Susan McGuire

My daughter and I visited this beautiful book shop yesterday. We were very happy to see such a great variety of books for sale. The staff were friendly and helpful. The prices are great and the shop is clean and well organised. I will definitely be going there again in the future.

The best one out of all the bookstores on King St Newtown. Good selection of books, I was able to hunt down several that I couldn't find new in other bookstores. Hard to reach the ones up high, but I love the floor to ceiling look & the fact that there are SO MANY BOOKS here!!!

  • Roger Li

I love their blind date idea for books. They cover up the book cover and give a description of the book. Very fun and unique. Everytime I walk by I make a stop. They have a good selection at a reasonable price. Hard copy books are getting pricier in general unfortunately

  • Helen Di Domenico

You need to spend a good hour or two here if you visit! Such an amazing selection of books... one of the best I've seen in a long time. Great prices too and books are well organised into categories. I want to come back when I have more time available to really rummage.

  • Bobby Shek

One of the best bookshops I’ve been to! Such a lovely small and cozy store with a variety of genres of books to choose from! Completely mesmerised by its “vintage” books, and the owner is just one of the nicest person. No doubt I’ll be coming here again soon!

  • Rebecca L

Very expensive for second hand books. Not well set out as we were looking for regency romance books and gave up in the end going to another book store because it wasn't well set out. Good location on King St, close to the train if coming from other suburbs.

  • Gareth Barker

Great bookshop. A massive variety of books available. Absolutely love the "blind date with a book" concept - books are covered in brown paper with bullet point descriptions on them. There is no way to judge a book by it's cover if you can't see the cover!

  • Todd Lupica

Fantabulous!! Always find something that interests me - you will as well - great history section and heaps of music biographies even comics and graphic novels and enough fiction titles to keep you reading for the rest of your life!! I bought 3 books

  • Daisy Phan

One of my favorite bookstores in Sydney. Love the vibe in Newtown. We already bought over 10 books over last few months. The prices are reasonable and they do have many classic books. Just got my Eat Pray Love home. Always come back every 1 month.

  • Peter Uren

If you like books definitely head here, although it might be a bit hit and miss. On the one hand I like finding these paperback gems that have been out of print for years and I like the musty smell of books. On the other hand, the an x-hand

  • Wanda Kluke

My favourite bookstore. Great selection of books to suit my eclectic tastes, easy to access as the store is well laid out, everything in well marked sections and let in alphabetical order. Best of all, Mel and Rachael know their books and

Staff are always so helpful and kind and genuine. Prices are absolutely amazing! Love this shop so much, definitely worth a visit and it is so relaxing and pleasent to be in. Best bookshop in my experience. Love it so much! …

  • Brian Storey

A stunningly wide selection of books, some of which were over 100 years old. Picked up a copy of Pickwick Papers, with hand written note and stamp from London. Wished I actually bought it now. We travelled here specifically as a rather

  • Justin Mikov

This is a place that sells you used books for too much money. They don’t accept reasonable offers because they’re doing well selling low value stock at at inflated prices. You’ll find better books and more reasonable prices at Goulds.

  • Nathan Landel

Vintage books being in their own section is handy, but it takes away some of the magic by making them noteworthy exclusively due to their age. Lack of a law section is odd, but newtown is full of anarchists so I guess it makes sense.

  • Liz Vanderwater

Of all the second hand books stores I have been in, I would have to say that this is the most organised and easily accessed bookstore that is a haven for all bibliophiles! From the HUGE family Bible secured with metal clasps by the

  • Artem B

Great location, friendly staff, great selection of almost new, pre-owned, and rare books on a large variety of subjects including but not limited to art, music, history, science, novels, biographies, philosophy etc.

A Beautiful book shop with soul. A must visit when in Newtown - its Great selection of interesting used books - This is a real experience to remember and will have you wanting to go again and again and again

  • Kylie Burrows

Great bookshop. Good to see this one standing the test of digital time. Well stocked, wide variety, decent prices, helpful staff. Nice nooks to hang in when the cacophony of King Street becomes too much.

  • Jisun Chun

I loved the mood of this antique bookstore. I could find a lot of books there and even if they were second-handed, they were in good conditions!! Also you can buy these books cheaper than they were.

  • MJ Roxas

This is a gem for bibliophiles who would like to strike a good deal on books! Lots of good finds and good organisation. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, they have written recommendations or just ask.

  • Kate Howell

Fabulous bookstore for fresh finds and secondhand. Excellent selection, incredibly friendly and helpful staff, and well priced. Plus, they have a Blind Date With A Book section for the adventurous!

  • michele fernandez

I love this bookstore! The prices are reasonable, browsing the books always brings me a pleasant surprise. The staff is helpful and well read. I find a new book I didn't know about on every visit.

  • Luis Martins

Without a doubt, best bookshop in Newtown (maybe even Sydney). Love their mistery book initiative. Very friendly staff, ask them for a reccomendation if you don't know what to choose.

  • Jim Stines

"We can put whatever mark up we want on our books" Should give you an idea of their business model. Would definitely recommend going anywhere else.

  • Rambod M

Wide range of new and second hand books. Reasonable price. Would recommend to everyone looking cheap price and good quality books.
