**Update: my gym account was terminated 48h after posting this review** [-] The gym smells (both sweat and pee)! Sometimes I hold my breath when entering. It is better in the morning especially if the cafe is toasting bread which covers the smell. [-] Towels can have disgusting stains/marks. Need to check them every time before using them. Recently, I found one with stains after drying out myself (it was so disgusting!). When I showed it to the night manager, instead of saying "we are sorry", he told that the towel service is done by some other company and it is just a stain. I had a similar experience before and already told the morning manager, but it seems it is happening again! I also saw someone use the towels to clean the dogs' area (possibly discharges!). They should add cleaning equipment for/in the dog area. [-] Showers' walls are not clean. There are people around that look like they are cleaning, but the dirt on the walls stays the same for days. There was a case I tracked. I noticed it on a Thursday or earlier. I saw it again on Friday and told the morning manager. Then, I saw it again on Monday and Tuesday of the next week! I feel like telling the manager may not help at all. [-] Showers have a common area between men and women section. Sometimes the people who clean the area forget to fully close the door! Be prepared for no privacy. [-] Water pressure in women's showers is low (my husband and I compare it to our home). Again, this is something I already discussed with the manager. [-] The hair dyer in the women's locker room is so weak. I see women bringing their own dryers. You may end up going to the windy outside (which is usually the case for SF) with wet hair. [-] I think there is no air conditioning in the area. They circulate the air with fans which either makes it cold in the winter or is not enough during the hot summer days. [-] Some of the Gym machines are not calibrated very well. I used a chest machine and felt different weights on my body, when I looked down, I noticed the seat is not screwed in the middle. [-] The gym is very crowded 4-7:30 PM. [-] They increased the membership price by $10 (about 10%) over the last year. [-] They started adding fees (~$20) when you request for gym freeze.
The gym itself is great. They have tons of machines. Unfortunately, the way the gym is run makes it a super unpleasant experience. It's $200 to join, as they make you pay for the first and last month up front. This wouldn't be a big deal if not for the fact that you have to cancel by the 20th day of the previous month to not be charged for the following month. So let's say you cancel December 21st, you will get charged $100 for January, and the $100 you paid for the last month when signing up goes to February, such that you have to continue to pay for 70 days after cancelling (cancel December 21st, pay through March 1st). If you want to bring a friend, it's $25 for the day. That's 1/4 of what it costs for the entire month. They're more concerned with profit than the customer experience. The front desk staff is curt/unfriendly. Not the worst thing, but definitely a bummer at times. You have to schedule all your workouts through their app. This wouldn't be a huge deal if not for the fact that the workouts are only 55 minutes long. After 55 minutes, even if you're not done working out, you have to leave. Having to schedule your workout also means you can't work out whenever you want, and if something comes up (family, work, etc) and you can't make that time, you don't get to work out that day. I'm sure they'll respond with some rebuttal about Covid, but just for comparison: Anytime Fitness is only $45/month, $10/day to bring a friend, they don't make you schedule appointments, it isn't crowded, and they have locations all over the country in case you like to travel.
I love fitness Sf I was on vacation signed up to this gym and wow this place can get packed. But they do a good job of accomidating that. There staff is friendly I've made friends with multiple of them and the equipment is pretty good. Huge spaces for lifting indoor and outdoor work out sections. This place Recreates the standard of what a gym experience should be as far as how well maintand the gym is its the gym of gym where you see all these dedicated people and go to pump out a great work out. I recommend this gym as a power lifter I have great standards for what a gym should be and this is the standard. Looking forward too returning. (Also to mention they had a food smoothie place that's currently closed but an amazing accommodation. But they have 5-6 fridges of drinks to choose from and wow that was clutch sometimes. And a stand full of a variety of 40+ Protein cookies and protein bars. And they can charge you through card on file. Perfect since who carries there wallet on a workout. This location is also my favorite I've visited all but each Sf fitness has a different vibe and accommodations :))
UPDATE as of 5/8/2023 “ I was advised to leave the scooter at the rack outside. I got a second one and today was stolen again. The management said their usual bla bla bla. There was no actions taken. Their cameras are for decorations only. They don’t have one security person in the whole gym. They keep raising their prices and that’s all what they care about.” I don’t usually like to write bad reviews, but I lost my electric scooter from inside the gym. It was locked inside the gym in the bike storage. Somebody came from outside and had their equipment, and cut the lock and stole the scooter. Then he came back and took a bike. All of that has happened from inside the gym, without noone of the security doing anything about it. When I asked them, they said they’re not responsible about any things stolen from the gym. No observation or anything. So basically you can just broke the lockers and took whatever you want without anyone stopping you. I definitely don’t feel safe anymore at this gym and will never renew my membership again.
Been to three of the Fitness SF locations now since joining a few weeks ago. This one is by far my favorite. As a (former) long time member of another gym that purports to be open all night (but isn’t), here are a few notes as to why you would spend the extra money to come to this gym: -People come here to workout. At my former gym I always felt like I’d get stared down asking to work in on someone’s set, or even asking how many sets they had left. Working in seems to be common practice here, which I love -There is towel service, so no having to throw a wet towel in your gym bag when you’re done -The slightly higher cost of membership keeps the people out who would join just to use the showers. This location in particular seems to truly be a judgement free place. I love that on any particular day I can wear workout clothes that really put me in the right mental space to get a good workout, and not feel like I’m being stared at. I love this gym and am so glad I made the switch.
I've been going to this gym for 2 years and it's definitely one of the (if not the) best gyms in the area! They have several power racks, barbells, dumbbells, benches and machines. Not to mention the little things like towel service and chalk. They've also recently updated the equipment in the gym, replacing older machines and weights with newer / fresher models which tells me that the management here is not complacent If you're new to the gym or looking for a trainer, I would absolutely recommend Albert. I've learned so much from him in my time at this gym and it's clear to me he's very knowledgeable and dedicated (but at the same time, not pretentious). He's able to customize a workout plan specifically for you, regardless of what your fitness goals are - so if you're looking to be the strongest you can be, or if you want to get in the best shape of your life, I'm confident Albert can help you get there
I really enjoy this gym, but if you’re taking part of the dog room amenities, I would go either early morning or late at night if you don’t want random people going up to your dog. My dog is friendly with other dogs, but it’s just weird to me that non-dog owning members go in there to take photos with the dogs or pet the dogs. It’s a nice amenity but I wish there was a way of only letting people who bring their dogs to have access to the dog room. Honestly tired of other members treating the dog room like a petting zoo. Edit: 1/23/23 when I signed up for this gym, the dog room was advertised as a place to leave your dog while you work out, not a dog therapy room. On their website it’s literally called “dog room”.
During quarantine it's basically the only gym available in the city. The outdoor area is great. I didn't give 5 stars for a couple of reasons: 1- 55 minutes is not enough for me to finish my work out. 2- the app is very unstable. I have to kill the app many times just so I can make a reservation or open the QR code. 3- membership is more expensive than other gyms in the city that either offers the same experience or better. On the positive side, the crew is very friendly, the members are most of the time respectful with other members, they kept adding machines and increasing capacity which I really appreciate. I just don't think I'll keep my membership once quarantine is done because of how expansive it is.
DO NOT SIGN UP FOR FITNESS SF: Extremely deceptive business practices. Large unaffordable charges to my account without my knowledge. Refusal to refund it, and threatened to send debt collectors after me if I opened a chargeback case. Made me pay multiple months ahead due to policies that weren't even on the contract and I'm down so much money from this disaster. I will be filing a case with the federal trade commission for fraudulent business practices. Whatever you do, do not sign up for Fitness SF. They do not care about customers and will try and get as much money out of you as possible. Even the vice president literally made threats to me when I requested a refund.
The gym was okay, but not worth the rate. I got more out of my membership at planet fitness. The issue for me was the cancellation nightmare. I attempted to cancel in January, but since I’m unable to find the email I sent them back then to show o did request a cancel, I was charged $400 without going to the gym once over 2-3 months. I would have gone if I knew I was still going to be charged for this. Most gym memberships I have dealt with are easy to cancel. And happen when you ask. I thought this gym would have great customer service. I was wrong.
Definitely not impressed and not very pleased with this gym. When I first started going it was much better, better equipment which gave much more of a variety. Now the better equipment has been replaced with machines that aren't good, they took out the better machines and now it's a gym full of a bunch people who sit on the equipment playing on their phones more than working out, or standing in the way socializing. Honestly one of the worst gyms I've been too in San Francisco.
The gym is becoming a sauna. No air circulation at all. Gets very hot, humid and smelly inside the gym. Makes me super tired and not able to finish my workout. Don’t believe that they charge a 100$ a month, and can’t afford to have AC! Definitely this is not a few days/ year issue. It is everyday. Even when it’s cold outside, it’s extremely hot inside. No AC, they only have two fans for the whole gym that you don’t see/feel. If you go on a tour, just look how sweaty people are.
My friend brought me here while I was visiting. Since I was with a member, the day pass was $25 (I think it's $30 without a member). If i lived in San Francisco, I would get a membership here (My friend said he pays $90/month). This gym has plenty of squat & power racks, a dumbbell area with many benches, a moderately-big size turf area, great cable set-ups and machines, all the standard machines, and also some rare equipment that is very nice to have!
Great gym. I've been training with Nikolas Sandevski for a couple of years now and he's absolutely fantastic: dedicated, driven, goal-oriented, and fun. I've seen a night-and-day difference in my strength and fitness level under his guidance. The facilities themselves are also top-notch: equipment is kept up to date and in good order, good locker rooms, and parking available for members. Highly recommended (both Nikolas and the gym).
If you're reading this, you've probably seen a lot of the poor reviews of this Soma location. I know it's hard, but ignore them. Hands down best gym I've been to. Yeah it's $90 a month but it blows the out all of the more expensive gyms out of the water. If you want to lift, and be around motivating people who want to lift, then this is the spot. Great equipment and great staff from the janitorial staff to management.
I went to this gym for more than 20 years! It was probably the best gym in SF for weight lifters. I finally had enough. $90 / month? For quite a while now I've been going to another gym near my home. It's clean, equipment in perfect condition, your vehicle is perfectly safe, and you don't get hit on by other men... All this for $60/month. In my opinion FITNESS SF - SoMa is way overpriced.
Great gym, equipment and employees. I’ve been a member for a number of years so I’ve seen the positive changes to the gym. I’ve known Alex Osborne for several years and he is definitely concerned about the wellness of his clients, the focus is on them !! Thanks for the great fitness tips as well. …
I’ve yet to find a better gym for serious weight lifters and body builders in SF. This gym isn’t just functional fitness. Hammer strength and techno gym equipment, and like 10x Rogue squat racks. Still a little bougie and uppity, but plenty of people that are there to do the work. Phone campers are rare
Love this Gym. Joined during the pandemic for the outdoor gym, stayed on because it was such a great place. All the equipment you need. The front desk and service staff are super kind and welcoming. Sets this gym apart from others. Charles is my dude! Lucky to have this gym so close! …
The gym is very complete, but what was outstanding was my PT sessions with Emma! She was incredible and I could see a difference in my body very fast. Her dedication to her work and respect for me was something unique, if I move back to SF one day for sure I’ll hire Emma again!
Predatory practices around charging you money when you intend not to, by not reminding you at reasonable time. Cancellation is obviously not as easy as joining this gym. Would recommend a gym where at-least customer service actually takes time to listen nicely with respect.
When you have parking feet away inside a tall gated parking area with cameras you can’t compare to the quality of the equipment and amazing layout of gym floor is more than enough considering all the other locations. The best gym in the city …
Imagine being in a room filled with men who will not accept that the answer is no. Best not to come here alone. Expect a workout comprised of hours of uninterrupted staring/leering. Make sure you can see behind you or keep your back to a wall at all times
Best gym I've ever been to in the 27 years that I've been working out. More equipment than any other gym anywhere in the world. Whether you are there for free weights, machines, cardio, circuit training, or to power lift, you'll find the right equipment
Very irresponsible services. I tried to freeze my account and no help available. In-person staff offer no help, online staff doesn’t do either. Freezing department wod not work when needed. Be prepared when you need this kind of service from them.
Love this gym. Excellent classes. People are super friendly. Very spacious, I've never had to wait for a machine, sometimes a little for some weights. Members are encouraged to bring their dogs and the staff keeps an eye on them at the front.
Towards the end of 2020 I decided to try working with a personal trainer for the first time and was fortunate enough to get paired with a smart and professional trainer named Victor Herrera. Victor was very patient with me and listened to
Terrible customer service experience. I emailed them for months to cancel my membership due to an illness and they kept charging me for 6 months. Finally I called and cancelled and they still charged me for the month. I honestly would
Amazing space for working out. The gym is huge and they have plenty of machines that covers the crowd very well. The functional area is amazing and spacious and didn’t feel like it was crowded although there was a lot of people.
This gym would easily receive five stars were it not for two issues: - Too many members hogging the machines while on their cell phones and taking five minutes between sets. I've been at gyms where cell phones are banned on the
They are open both indoors and outdoors. Easy reservation system to book your place. Good selection of equipment. Space is not as new as the mid market one, but it is a lot larger. Even has a room just for all the doggos!
EDIT: Thanks owner! You’re the best. Changing to 5 stars. Dear owner, the guy on sundays who closes refuses to sell drinks at 750 because he’s “done”. Every other day the staff is more than happy to. What’s up with that?
Great facility with excellent lighting and ample squat racks / free weights. The layout is also nicely done, I feel like it's easy to focus here. Also the parking lot is nice to have when needed.
Solid gym, great variety of equipment, reasonably clean. Only complaint is that it can get a bit busy during peak hours.
Lots of squat racks, never have too much of a line. But there’s no natural light in the gym.
Standard gym with platforms, usually enough where there isn't a problem with waiting.
The restroom and reception is something they need improved better. I’m disappointed
Great gym with lots of different equipment. Interesting people watching as well.
Great equipment, lots of space, not too crowded. Plenty of eye candy too.
