Fort Jesus: A Historic Gem Yes, Fort Jesus is a remarkable piece of history that has stood the test of time. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it is a testament to the cultural, religious, and political conflicts that took place along the East African coast. The fort has witnessed many battles, sieges, and cultural exchanges throughout its history, and its walls have tales to tell about the past. It is a fascinating place to visit for those interested in history, architecture, and cultural heritage. I recently visited Fort Jesus over the weekend and I must say that it was an unforgettable experience. This historic site, located in Mombasa, Kenya, is a true marvel and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history and architecture. Firstly, the fort is situated in an idyllic location right at the edge of the Indian Ocean, with stunning views of the water and the city. The fort itself is a masterpiece of Portuguese military architecture, built in the 16th century to guard the harbor of Mombasa. It is incredibly well-preserved, and it's a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the Portuguese builders. Inside the fort, I was blown away by the intricate design and layout of the buildings, which are a mix of European, African, and Arabic styles. The museum inside the fort was also informative and engaging, giving visitors a glimpse into the history of the fort and its role in the history of Mombasa. One of the highlights of my visit was the guided tour of the fort. The tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and had a great sense of humor. He was able to bring the history of the fort to life with fascinating stories and anecdotes about the people who lived and worked there over the centuries. Overall, I would highly recommend visiting Fort Jesus if you're in Mombasa. It's a truly unique and awe-inspiring site that gives you a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of the region.

Quite a bit has changed since I was last here... But still worth the visit and a trip down memory lane. First off, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Fiona was very patient at the ticketing counter even though I was giving her a hard time by not understanding the ticketing prices. 5-Stars for her. She's a keeper. When I found the prices for the local guides steep, she suggested to me that I get a student tour guide from inside the fort and just give him something as an appreciation for his services. I took on that offer and for Maxwell as a guide. He was very informative and very patient with us giving us enough time to explore and take pics and ask him a plethora of questions (definitely get a student guide... Highly recommend Maxwell). Enjoyed it amply and recommend a visit to the fort for anyone coming to Mombasa, young and old. Tour takes about 1-1.5 hours. Go during the day time. No crowd.

Unterkunft in Diani Beach nehmen....super Strand. Kokosnuss 50 KES - Tuktuk pro Kopf innerhalb Diani (5km) auch 50 KES ....Schnorcheltour mit Paff & Glasboot ca 2-3h zur Robinson-,Insel max 150 KES pro Person....tolle Tour. Vertrauenswürdiger junger Mann +254711840690 (Whatsapp) - hat auch Kontakt zur Massage (Deep Tissue - für 1 Stunde ca 1500 KES max 2000 KES). Viel Spass.

Great to learn the history of the area back to the 1600's. We went in the morning, which was perfect because there weren't many people, so lots of perfect opportunities for many pictures. I had a guide/friend with me, however another guide did try to say we needed to hire him; I spoke up and told him several times it was not necessary for me to have two guides, and I'm more than capable of reading the signs. I loved being able to walk around at my place and explore the buildings and grounds. You can definitely hire the guard if you'd like.

Very nice place, rich in history from the Portuguese to the Oman Arabs and finally the British. The wall speak for them self great environmental. Very informed local tour guide, time conscious, audible and mostly entraining.also great initiative by involving the community who sell marchansice in side the fort . Great us of space. The entrance though needs a proper IT system and a well space management to reduce crowding and slow service also it can be moved more to the inside to allow ppl to exit

Whenever you visit Mombasa and it's environs, take some time and visit this awesome site,it has a great deal of history from the Portuguese,Omani Arabs and Pakistani. It's wise to be accompanied by a tour guide as you'll learn a ton of history from them. The charges are as below; 1200 KES for non- resident adults, 600 KES for a non-resident child, 400 for East African adults, 200 for East African Children, 200 for Kenya citizen adults and 100 for Kenya citizen children.

Great historic site. Built 500 years ago to protect the deep harbor entrance to Mombasa. Housed the armory and you can see canyons and handle cannon balls. Go down to the basement and see the cells. It's nice and airy site, lots of open areas. An informative area with exhibits from the early days on display. You can see the open sea from the towers. The vast Indian Ocean looks amazing from here. Well worth the visit. Buy a ticket and take guide with you.

Visited 2022 Fort Jesus is a wonderful piece of history with amazing tour guides and a treasure trove of fascinating stories. Unfortunately, it is in desperate need of additional financing. Some of the best and most well maintained exhibits are provided by foreign nations. I would really love to see more done for such an interesting spot. Bring sturdy shoes as the passage or archs and other parts made of coral stone can be slick but also are very treacherous.

I recommend visiting this museum with a tour guide. There is so much history here and the stories that we learned from the guide were the most interesting part of the experience. The beauty of the mahogany doors and the coral is worth seeing as well as the humpback whale skeleton. That was quite a sight to see! If you are in Mombasa, do not miss this experience.

First and foremost, you'd better buy ticket in advance via e-citizen unless you have a M-pesa. It took me so long to log in and make the payment, although I insisted to do so cause the entrance fee doubled if you pay with cash. Tired of tour guides the day before, I didn't take the guided tour but it was fine. Nice place to understand the history of the city.

A poorly maintain Ned heritage site needs attention of authorities to make the place clean, maintain the relics and make it more organized for visitors by providing good services. If possible. Otherwise a place to visit if you like to.find the history of this fort and Mombasa in the real old days when invaders and traders used to come to this place.

I had a pleasant experience at Fort Jesus. The ticket attendant and guards at the entrance were quite polite. I'd recommend a guide if you really want to get into the details of the historical events that surround this site.Otherwise, there's nothing much to see other than ruins of the Portuguese fort.Worth a visit all the same.

Fort Jesus is iconic with a rich history of religious backgrounds, power, slavery, and trade. It's a convergence of culture, power, people, and resilience. Have a walk through Mombasa old Town painted with a rich swahili culture with a little blend of Arabic and Omani touch. Get to sample a variety of swahili dishes with a special recommendation of pilau and the softest vitumbua.

This historic site has a lot to offer in terms of infotainment. From how it was a fortress to a prison, and ship models used back in the days to a skeleton of a whale washed up by the shores there's much to take your mind off your daily stresses and learn something new. Take a friend or family and they'll love it.
