One of my favourite places to get egg tart and an array of Asian baked goods. I waited over 15 minutes just to get into the shop on a Saturday afternoon so that gives you an indication of how popular their baked goods are. This time I bought their mango cheesecake to try it and am sooo glad I did. It is amazingly good! I am not a fan of traditional cheesecake. Even Japanese cheesecake I find is too cheesy. This one is perfect. Beautiful layers, fresh delicious fruit, and amazing flavour without it being too cheesy. It is not too big so you can enjoy it without a lot of left overs. Will definitely be buying it again the next time I’m in Scarborough. Another positive if this place is their baked goods the pineapple buns are smaller in size compared to other places which Is a perfect portion size for a snack, for kids or for elderly folk. The crusts on the egg tarts are flakey, light and not oily and the custard is just perfect. The “wife cake” is also the best there is in the GTA. I have tried to find a comparable one at about 2 dozen different bakeries and keep coming back up this one. They don’t skimp on the filling here and it’s the perfect amount of chewiness, sweetness and flavour. Every time I’m in the area I make it a point to stop my and get something from Fragrant Bakery. It’s definitely one of my happy places.
Is this spot really inflation proof? So far, yes Bought 6 items and came out to just under $2 apiece. Those prices are some OG chinese bakery prices as some spots can have items like egg tarts going up to $3 each And co spidering this is probably one of the top 3 spots for egg tarts in the city, that’s a pretty freaking great price So with the gf tarts being said, there is another item they offer which I think is better than their egg tarts, which is their mochi. It’s super soft, chewy without sticking to your teeth ever. Loaded with fillings, regardless of type you choose and always consistent It’s a Chinese bakery, so don’t expect this amazing service, however, they have streamlined it for you to look and see and when it’s your turn, you tell them what you want and they quickly get it for you Also, on a couple side notes, cash only and the plaza looks like not much going on, but parking can be a pain, so have o be patient Great job overall!
A must-stop destination every time I go to that neighbourhood. The photos shows (from 12 o'clock clockwise): Swiss roll-type cream cakes in mango, black sesame, mocha (sumptuous!!!) and green tea with red beans (a bit disappointed). These are small, about six inches long. I like to get several flavours so family and friends can choose. Love their baked black sesame buns and "Mexico" buns (with custard filling). Wife cakes also come in low sugar version and are tasty, no fake sugar after taste. Their buns are great, needless to say. Their buns are smaller than most of other Chinese bakeries but they are soft and fluffy, not too doughy. With Covid, only one customer is allowed in this tiny shop at a time.
Saw some online reviews and comments stating Fragrant has the best or one of the best wife cakes (lo paw bang) In Toronto. I’m not a fan of these cakes as I had a few in my life time in NYC and around the US but the girlfriend is and misses the good ones found in HK. So we visited Fragrant Bakery in search of their wife cakes. Pleasantly found this is a OG bakery with decades of history and it shows because one bite of their wife cake my girlfriend was smiling and one bite for me I enjoyed this wife cake. It is not too sweet, flaky exterior layer, soft moist interior layer, and delicately delicious throughout. What a surprise that I bought a dozen to drive back to NYC with us for friends/family. A must try!
Went to Fragrant Bakery around 12 noon on a Wednesday. As soon as you walk into the mall, and you can smell the fragrance of the bakery Lol. There was a line up of about 6 people. When it was my turn in line, I placed my order for their famous Egg Tarts but of course they were sold out. I was told to come back in five minutes and was given an order number (3). The customer service was great although there was a bit of a language barrier, thankfully one of the kind customers helped with translations as I had questions about how long the custard tarts could stay in the fridge. Overall great experience, I will definitely be coming back for more Egg Tarts!
I am a egg tart lover and would visit different bakeries to try out their products. I recently realized that I have been going to the wrong store with the same name on Milliken Blvd so I made this trip to visit the original. I was surprised by the long line up as the store only allow 1 customer at a time. I waited 15 minutes to get in so I decided to buy more than planned, bought half a dozen of egg tarts, 6 variety buns and 2 sponge cakes @$1.80 each. The buns are 2.60 for 3, sizes are relatively small but the quality is amazing! The egg tarts are very good except the bottom of the crust is a little over cooked. I will definitely visit often!
Terrible hygiene + horrible service First time visiting, got 2 egg tarts and 1 Lopo bang. When I found a piece of hair buried between the layers of the egg tart crust, I went back, showed the cashier lady the egg tart and asked to exchange for a new one (I wasn’t even complaining). The lady examined the egg tart, didnt say a thing to me, not even an apology, then told the server to give me a new one. The server put an egg tart into a bag and threw it onto the cashier table. I felt wronged by such a terrible experience. Please do not support a business that treat their customer in such an impolite way.
April 2022 4★ Located inside a small dusty strip mall, you'll find this old bakery. This bakery has been here for well over 25 years as of writing. Of course, nothing has changed and the interiors look exactly like it was back then. Many of the bakery items haven't changed much and you'll find the traditional Chinese items. One favorite is the egg white cake. 2 @ 15$. Light, fluffy and a little sweet, if you like angel food cake, this is the lighter and seemingly more healthy option. Parking available. A good selection. Would recommend if you are in the area.
The line up was long every time I went. I bought 老婆餅 wife pastry (sweet),老公餅 husband pastry (salty) ,黑芝麻糯米糍 black sesame glutinous rice ball (custard inside) ($1.30 each),花生糯米糍 peanut glutinous rice ball ($1.10 each),芋頭糕 taro cake ($12, only available during Chinese New Year month). The shop is really small, only allow one person to be inside at a time. It's my first time trying their taro cake. I found it to be expensive but still want to try it. It's not bad. I prefer to have the white glutinous rice ball because it has lots of peanut inside.
Best authentic wife's cake (老婆餅) I've had in a long time. Flaky, tender pastry and not too sweet filling with some sesame seeds and I think candied winter melon. Love that they have a reduced sweetness version too. Their egg tarts were also fantastic - flaky pastry and not too sweet egg custard. The mochi is also soft and generous with filling. Still good the day after! I'll definitely come again. Don't forget to bring cash. The ladies working there are no nonsense and quick - typical old school HK customer service lol.
I have been a regular customer for their delicious egg tarts. Every time I am in the area, I make sure to stop by and grab a dozen. The egg tarts are always fresh and have the perfect balance of sweetness and creaminess. The crust is flaky and buttery, making for a perfect treat. The bakery itself is small and simple. The only downside is that it is a cash only place, so make sure to come prepared. Overall, this is my go-to spot for egg tarts and I highly recommend it to anyone in the area looking for a tasty treat.
Best wife cakes in the city - been coming here for years and I still love it It's a little comforting to see that even after like 15 years the bakery looks exactly the same lol! I used to come here with my parents and now I still come here as an adult to buy some baked goods and I never leave without their wife cakes. I think they're cash only... I have never attempted to pay with a credit card so I could be wrong, but make sure you bring cash with you in case!

My colleague told me about this Bakery. It's very basic and old school but everything we tried was good. Surprisingly the prices are about half of what we pay in Richmond Hill. We bought 13 treats and it was about 20$. The Chinese Bakery we usually visit in Richmond Hill would charge about double so not sure how the owners can run a viable business on these "pre-pandemic" price points....

This place is known for their winter melon patty (round) I’m not sure it’s proper name. It was a very flakey pastry and the filling wasn’t too sweet. It was still warm too ☺️ bonus It doesn’t have a great variety though. Also go the Chinese rice krispy square aka sachima. Good size!!! Ok so I’ve eaten it now and it’s not very sweet. I think I would of preferred it with a bit more stickiness aka sweetness but it will do in a pinch.
Returned to this small bakery recently and got their wife cakes which they are known for. Great pastry and filling as always. Their buns are smaller than most bakeries which isn't a problem when you know what to expect. There's a large selection of baked goods and everything is freshly made and it's great to see the same happy faces working there. It is a small shop so you will probably have to line up outside for a short while.
My favourite dan tat in the city. Pure bliss to eat one that is still warm immediately outside of the car in the parking lot. Both because I can’t wait and also because it’s so flaky and will make a total mess. Typically always fresh due to demand. You sometimes have to wait. If it’s that fresh, pop the tops so things don’t get soggy. Located inside the mall. Find HK Tea in the food court around the corner.
They are still opened during lockdown. Their egg tarts are freshly baked and taste wonderful. It tastes very crispy on the outside & creamy inside. The mango pudding cake and coconut cake are nice. They are not too sweet! The shop is small but they do offer different traditional Chinese pastries and cakes. The price is very reasonable compared to other bakery shops. Will definitely go back again!
I love the bakeries every time when I pass by the area I have to get some. I like the mango pudding, black forest cake, the egg White cake, the pastries the egg tarts and the buns i also like the pineapple pastry. The bakery is located inside the Plaza. The parking lot is always busy but you can always get a parking spot. I recommend this Bakery place.
Best in town Lao Por Beng (wife cake), chewy, and you can choose less sweet or regular sweet. And most importantly they are freshly baked every day! They also have other traditional Chinese pastries (egg tart, sponge cake, century egg pastry). Always a line in front of the store, no matter what time of the day you're there!
Very delicious traditional Hong Kong style pastry including egg tart, Swiss roll and winter melon cake. Reasonable price. Highly recommended

my favourite Chinese bakery, their egg tarts are divine. enjoyed even better if they’re freshly out of the oven. Make sure to come early if you want to avoid lineups! They have other items that are also very good and not typically sold at Chinese bakeries including sweetheart cakes and different types of rice puddings.
Good traditional Chinese bakery. Must visit if I go that area.

Visited on Sunday. Egg tarts, pineapple buns, wife cakes are all freshly out just before 10am. Wife cake is quite filling. Egg tarts are good. Wished paper bags was available for packing. It would absorb some moisture from the freshly baked goods.
My go-to bakery when I crave Hong Kong-style egg cakes. Freshly made, flaky, not too sweet and full of flavor. Their wife cake is also good. I always pick up other things like pineapple buns, peanut mochi, walnut cake...really taste like home.
Apparently best lo po ben. A Chinese pastry and tastes good. The owner is not very friendly, was acting rude to customer and employees. Good food, bad service. They sell out really fast, call and reserve. You MIGHT have to speak Chinese.
Small shop but very good quality. Traditional bakery items at very reasonable price. Long lineup at times and the staff could get impatient if you speak or think slow Cash only. …
Egg tarts are delicious. Also a great place to get wedding pastries (dowry offering) - I believe it's twenty dollars for a box of 8 pastries.
Very fluffy egg tart. Almost feel like the tart is just holding the runny middle. Very different from egg tarts from anywhere else.
This place needs renovations and feel hesitant to enter and some pastries are good but the rice balls are a disappointment.
