Best Takeout Afternoon Tea in TO! I ordered afternoon tea takeout purely for the convenience of their location (near #401 and McCowen). Afternoon tea is a rare find outside the core of Toronto. I truly didn't expect much. Was I surprised! First, the treats for each set came in two beautiful boxes and tied up with a bow! Each edible morceau is safely separated with diverder inside so they arrived in pristine state after a rough ride in traffic. Second, everything was super fresh. (All afternoon tea enthusiast dread dried sandwiches and stale cakes.) For purists, the scones were not the traditional short bread type but seem to be a version of crusty croissant. However, none of us complained as we all loved the strawberry compote (again unusal) that came with them. The last chart topper was the dessert, light, super moist with flavour depth from two different kind of thinly sliced cakes, lemond curd and whipped cream. The cafe at the unassuming plaza may not be where you would go sit down for afternoon tea, but their takeout is beyond doubt a winner! The lady who took the order over the phone was very helpful and the staff at the cafe was friendly. Who knew Scarborough has such wonder to offer?! Apparantely American writer Tyler Cowen did. He called Scarborough the dining capital. I won't be scouring the area for other food but just happy to find such a gem outside of Toronto's dangerous parking ticket zone, and will defintitely order takeout hightea from them again.
I have been looking forward to leaving a review for Gerard's Cafe and to try their offerings. I was looking to buy a cake for my dad's birthday and I didn't want to just buy one from Metro, which is where I would normally buy one. I like the cakes there but this was a milestone birthday and deserved something special. I googled cakes and found Gerhard's Cafe. They are just north of Bellamy and Ellesmere. After browsing the cakes online I decided on the strawberry torte. The cake comes in a cool box with their name on it that will look nice when you bring it to your gathering, nicer than a plastic clamshell or plain white box. I appreciated this detail. The cake was unique and nothing like I have had before. The meringue on the outside of the cake and on the middle layer adds a perfect sweetness level and adds a nice texture in every bite. It's a lighter cake so if you love deserts you could probably indulge in a second piece. Everyone at our gathering loved it. Price? All I can say is nice things cost money and I feel I got my money's worth. The staff at the restaurant were very friendly and I will be back to see what else they have to offer. Thank you for the high quality treat. I hope to be back soon.
Thoroughly disappointed. While I don't always write a review. I feel like such a lack of quality should be addressed. Me and my family don't like cream that's too sweet and the cream in the Black Forest cake that we ordered was ok. That's about all the praises I can sing for our order. The whole cake just felt cheap. Shown in the photo, over half the cake was cream. I usually don't mind a little extra cream in a cake but this was unacceptable. Especially when the sponge cake itself is bland and tasteless. While most Black forest cakes will have a chocolate shaving coating, our cake just had the same bland and tasteless sponge cake crumbled and sparsely sprinkled onto the side. Even in cheap Black Forests the cream is usually mixed with a Jello that's a substitute for actual cherries. Instead, we were met with some type of jam that tasted more of cough medicine than actual Kirsch. That means for $55 I received sad tasteless sponge cake, slathered with cream, all topped with crumbs. I expected so much more after reading reviews that their cakes were the best. I'm disappointed to say that this has to be one of the worst Black Forest cakes I've eaten.
Height of deliciousness. I have never had that perfect creamy butter cream icing ever. Every store bought cake has too much sugar in the icing and the cake. And sometimes when you leave the cake outside the icing dried up but in this case. I was amazed to know that they make buttercream icing in the bakery it self do you can adjust the sweetness accordingly which was the perfect solution of what I was looking for. The cake was very moist, full of flavours. Upto the mark of sweetness. Usually I saw in parties there guests left the icing in plates or they just had a bite of cake and it’s all go in the garbage but not in our case; None of the guest left cake in there plates. I am definitely going to spread the word about this. Thank you so much. Will definitely come back for more ☺️ You are the best Vivian. Thank you so much for all of your help.
1. Taste was bad: The most expensive, bang average black forest cake. Cake was dry, black forest is supposed to be moist. Just empty calories with no taste. Not sure what other reviewers are on about. 2. Expensive: They charge more than $7 for a extremely thin sliver of the cake. They put it in a box before you can take a look. Very slimy business practice. 3. Portions were small: I called them after opening the box, and they said they use a "cake divider" - I think they have their own measurement for this device, luckily NO other Bakery in Canada uses such a small divider, unique experience indeed. 4. Unethical business, with bad products, looting customers - masquerading as an innocent, friendly, cake expert. Go to another place, there are plenty of better ones nearby. Buyer beware.
We've been coming to this bakery for years through different owners. I understand that prices need to increase as ingredients are more expensive now. The cakes are good here and the place is wonderful to sit have a quiet meal and or dessert. I really really disagree in how they charge you more if you stay and eat your cake as opposed to taking it home! Why? It's the same size cake and you're getting more business when someone eats it at your restaurant..that usually means they buy coffee too. This is just ridiculous that you charge $5.95 for eating the same small sliced cake in the restaurant vs. $5.50 for taking the same size slice home. Your cake prices are ridiculous now too. It's really too bad because your shop is nice and quaint and the cakes taste good.
I am giving a neutral star-rating because I have not tried their cakes. I was told I had to buy an entire cake, not just a slice. This store calls themselves a "Cafe", but is a cafe not a place you go and get a slice of cake, instead of an entire cake? Some online commentators say it's and "old fashioned European" cafe. I lived in Europe (actually in a country where "Gerhard" is a common name) for nearly one decade, but have never encountered a cafe that did not sell slices of cakes, but only whole cakes (actually am not even sure that "old fashioned European cafes" sell whole cakes at all). Very disappointed, but still curious about the cakes' quality. Have to wait until there's an occasion when I have others to share the cake with me.
I used Gerhard’s cafe to send a cake to my husband on Eid day. Since I’m based in Pakistan, I really wasn’t sure how to place the order considering I couldn’t visit the bakery in person. So I ended up using the chat function on the website and the staff was SUPER helpful. The whole order and delivery was coordinated via email and I was good to go in 20 minutes. I was really happy with their efficient customer service and the processing of the payment. The cake I ordered was the Tiramisu and according to my husband, and my in-laws, it was amazing. They told me that it was the perfect consistency, not too sweet and not too creamy. My experience was great, and really hoping I can try the cakes in person once I’m in Scarborough ☺️
I'd like to give this cute restaurant a higher rating, but here is the problem: I asked about ingredients in some of their cakes and pastries, and asking if any don't have things like: wheat flour. The lady, who was very nice said certain things were free of wheat - and I purchased them - I ended up having to give them away because they had wheat and the person I bought them for would have gotten sick. If you aren't concerned about ingredients, or worried about wheat / allergens then this place is very nice. Sugar free items, very nice little pastries, but not very knowledgeable staff, or clear to understand. I'd still go back, but with different expectations.
I've only tried one product from here, the Strawberry Meringue Torte. Ordered it once (a very large one) for a bridal shower and again for a baptism. One of my favorite cakes. Only issue is we encountered a language barrier with the employee who took the order for the bridal shower and got the message on the cake wrong, which is why I didn't rate higher. I still went back and ordered the baptism cake because it tasted so good. If I ever oder another for an important event I'll need to make sure language doesn't get in the way, I'd be nervous the order would be messed up. Maybe emailing what I'd want written on the cake would be an option.
I preordered a cake to be delivered through DoorDash. I called them a day before to confirm that they would have the cake in stock for my order. The lady that I spoke with said that they definitely will have that cake ready for the next day and that I can go ahead and order it through DoorDash...Well, I received a notification 10 mins before the scheduled delivery that they did not have the cake in stock and had to cancel my order. I need that cake to bring to party tonight and don't have time to pick any up, which is why I tried to order one in the first place. This was a very disappointing and frustrating experience.

I went to Gerhard's over 20 years ago and fell in love with their cakes. It was a little European oasis in the middle of Scarborough. A month ago I drove there hoping that it would still be there and was euphoric that it was! The cakes and cookies are decadent! I have been there practically every week since my new discovery. I absolutely LOVE their cakes and am making it a point to try every one of them. Their salads and sandwiches are fresh and delicious too. My plan is to order desserts for any future dinner parties from there. Once you go to Gerhard's you have to go back and bring friends to share the incredible experience!
For the last 15 years at least I have ordered all my cakes at Gerhards, for all birthdays and other celebrations. On top of that I sometimes take my grand kids for a piece of cake and hot chocolate and/or coffee. Everything is always home made with all real/natural ingredients and an unmistakable taste of Europe's best. I love this place and it will be always my first choice. Heather is a joy and so are the other ladies there. Keep up the good work and never change the recipes. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you soon.
Location is good there is a good amount of parking to the side. Make a reservation its a small cafe. Went for the high tea special $29 a person. Everything tasted great, it 6 sample seize sandwiches, 2 scones, and some desserts that varies when you go in. It's not meant to be a meal , its a snack, was great for our Valentine's date(great as a date spot). The crowd is more elderly, it's a quiet place to relax. I did have to ask for coffee refills though, she would pass by with the pot ask other patrons, which I found was werid.
Needed a cake for a birthday and something written on it, easy enough or so I thought. I was told I had to wait for someone to come in to write on the cake. After 15mins I was told someone was still on their way! I thought how crazy is this, and said I had to go. Ladies in the cafe did not care that I had to wait so long and didn't follow up -- I had to ask! No apologies, just said thank you for coming in. Also the cake did not taste that great and overpriced! Will never go back and will never recommend this place.
German Bakery, loved the German cookies. They were like the one my mother made when I was young. Service was friendly and helpful, the employee had lots of fun facts about this place. The cookies tasted very good, only bought one to try. I also bought no added sugar apple strudel, very tasty option for no added extra sugar. Be warned, it is a little drier than your traditional strudel. Will visit again to try different types if pastries. Watch out for the elusive traveling panda
This place saved the day for me! I asked for a ready to go cake. I got their 6 inch strawberry meringue torte for $40, their bestseller that apparently feeds 4 to 6. I felt like I could cut 16 slices from it. It was so delicious though I can see it feeding 1 person only. Everyone who ate it LOVED IT and multiple people were still talking about it for days after. I would give this cake 6 stars if I could.

The service was very patient checking and explaining ingredients, reasonable price at 30CAD for a 6”cake. They agree to make some adjustments to my accommodations. Although finally there was still not exactly correct but the cake was very flurry and delicious. (The cake below is not the original) I will definately come back again but will make sure and make sure they understand my request and REMEMBER it.
Great tasting cakes and very friendly staff! These aren't your run-of-the mill grocery store cakes or pretentious over priced boutique cakes. The cake is light and fluffy and the cream is not over powering. Be sure to try the Strawberry Meringue Torte, the Dobosh slices and the classic Black Forest Torte. They can be a staple to celebrate any occasion or even just to get yourself over a long day at work
The worst Black Forest cake I EVER ate ..It was dry and dense..Inspite of me asking before I order the cake about the fresh cherry or Jello it would contain.I was told both but unfortunately it didn't contain either but it was just jam.... Either the pastry chef was a rookie or on drugs.. The cake was just terrible.. First and last time visiting this place...sorry but I had to give a BAD REVIEW..
Love their cake . I got a sponge to put a cake together for a party. It was soooo light and well baked. The right sweetness too, very important. I’m looking forward to have an opportunity to get their merengue Staff is super friendly and helpful. Also the store have a nice European vibe. I might take a friend for a high tea sometime
Went there to buy a cake on valentine's. Bought a chocolate truffle and it tasted amazing, bought a smile on my girls face and that's what mattered. The staff was very welcoming and gave her inputs and suggestions on what to buy that was really helpful.Though I just had take away but loved the whole ambience of the cafe, very relaxing and simple.
Very nice staff, really delicious veggie wrap. I went three times in one day while doing a first aid course next door. I’ll definitely stop back in if I’m in the neighbourhood. It’s mostly an older clientele. Almost like stepping into a time machine. Very cozy vibe. I’m not into sweets but their cakes looked so good I almost gave in.
Are you seriously doing this business? We ordered a birthday cake and we informed the maker about this but unfortunately there was no candle comes with the cake at all! We also ordered a less sugar cake, but the maker just chose to ignore our request which the cake is too sweet! I will never recommend this business for anyone else.
My friend ordered the cake for my birthday from Gerhards cafe based on the reviews. It was the worst cake that I have had till date. Had no flavor and the inside was so dry. Very disappointing . I will never order from them and their customer service was terrible when I told them the cake was so dry and flavorless . …
I searched up the best black forest cake in the GTA and this bakery was among the top. I purchased a fresh one, and was disappointed. The cake was not soaked in cherry as a traditional black forest is supposed to be. In their defence, it was exactly as advertised on their website, and they do not mention the cherry soak.
Absolutely adore this cafe. I feel like I've entered a cozy home. We just had coffee and a few cookies that you can tell are home made. They we absolutely incredible. We stumbled in after coffee culture being to full that there was no seats. What a great by fluke chance we found you. You have a customer for life.
I ordered a cake for my husband's 50th and it was just amazing, elegant and delicious. They did a great job. Staff were very patient. Thanks so much Heather for making this cake just the way I wanted. I highly recommend Gerhard's and I will never think twice to go back to them. Love their creativity!!!
Stick to the strawberry meringue torte. It has crushed meringue pieces on the sides with a thick layer of strawberry mousse in the middle. Their buttercream cakes are a bit thicker and dense and doesn't taste that much lighter after I let it sit for a couple of hours for the buttercream to thaw a bit.
Gerhard’s cafe is at the odd place but the cakes and service is good. The most customers are elderly. The decors is 1980’s. I tried strawberry shortcake ($6.95) The small cake, 8 inches is for $30. Absolutely delicious, super soft and light. ❤️❤️❤️ I’ll try a several cake flavours later.
Love their strawberry meringue cake! Super light and not too sweet. You can buy slices there or you can order over the phone. They have full cakes in several sizes that you can view on their website. They even rush ordered a cake for me on the same day before (although not recommended).
Ham n cheese sandwich to die for! Fantastic homemade cookies and cakes. Great european cafe in the middle of Scarborough. Clean, friendly and excellent food- no matter. What you order. They also have "high tea" - no not that kind! We will try their "tea" this month and .review later.
Saw someone post in a Facebook group and they gave amazing reviews. We drove all the way from Brampton to Scarborough during the pandemic for the sugar free chocolate mouse cake and sugar free cookies…it was the best sugar free cake and cookies I’ve ever had. I wish they were closer!
Sadly we got a really dry chocolate butter cream cake and now I just found out they don’t even make all their own cakes but just order them in. I’ve had the strawberry merengue cake before which was good, this last one was just not good at all.

Very good customer service. But the price they charged for the black forest custom made cake that serves 12 to 15 people were 175$ which is too expensive.Taste was not bad. You can find other excellent special occasion cakes for only about hundred dollars in other cafes.

Good cakes and great coffee. The staff is really attentive and courteous. The lady taking our order was accommodating and made us feel welcomed. I had the sugar free cookie and was tasty. We also ordered other pastries with various teas. The place is clean and cozy.
This used to be a nice place to have a quiet lunch although quite pricey for the type of quick meals that they serve, however the last two times that I have had lunch there with some friends we were served stale cakes, which is unacceptable as this is a bakery shop.
My family has been coming here for almost 30 years, and the quality is still exceptional! Their pastries and treats are freshmade daily and their meals are perfectly cute and portioned. But their cakes are what really take the cake! When I
Is in desperate need of a renovation, service was terrible, waited forever for our food! Quiche was undercooked, the soup was maybe 1/2 cup, date square was hard, dry and was tasteless. Quality of the food was poor and grossly overpriced.
Good place for lunch. Sandwich, wrap or salad made fresh. Good soups. European style desserts which are really good . Quiet setting. Seating is limited so make a reservation especially if for more than two people. Reasonable price .
I recently discovered this cake shop, and I must say, it's a hidden gem! I ordered the sugar-free chocolate cake, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were rich and decadent, without the guilt of added sugars. Each slice was a
Beautiful place inside and lovely cakes. Very fresh and tasty. I ordered two different cakes for my twin daughters birthday and everyone loved them. I will be ordering another one today for my sister's birthday. Thanks again!
We just placed a custom birthday cake order today and looking forward to tasting it ! A bit expensive comparing to Metro or others retail bakeries but let's see how the quality and outcome would meet the price range! …
I ordered the Black Forest cake for my dad's birthday (his favorite) and Gerhard's did not disappoint! Will be ordering from here in the future to support the business and hoping to visit more often once covid is over.
The mocha chocolate cheesecake tastes very good, not too sweet and full of ingredients, especially the middle layer of cheese is really delicious. The owner is very nice, so I will choose this cake shop in the future.
The Black Forest cake we ordered for Christmas was delicious! Everyone loved it and asked for the bakery contact. Staff at Gerhard's was friendly too, they wrote a "Happy Birthday to Jesus" message on the cake for me!
I bought a chocolate meringue torte yesterday. There was soil in the cake when we ate it. There was soo many soil that everyone could feel it in their mouth who came to the party at our house. It was so shameful.
Absolutely LOVE their cake!! I had the orange truffle, creamy but light and tasty!! The homemade vegetable soup is simple but super delicious!! Service is very attentive and friendly! Will definitely go back!
I like coming here just for buying cakes..I have tried different cake..all are excellent..especially the strawberry cake..just right amount of sweetness.. however..the place is small and far from my home..
First time ordering a cake from Gerhard's Cafe. Absolutely delicious chocolate cake decorated with fresh strawberries. Amazing flavours, light textures and enjoyed by all. Will definitely return.
This place is very cozy and friendly. Just went there with a big group of friends and really enjoyed it. I would like to suggest everybody to visit the place whether come with family or friends.
Not many places like this around anymore. Amazing cakes and seasonal baked goods. You can have a good lunch or snack here for a reasonable price. Great coffee and tea and friendly service.
Very nice place. Staff is super friendly and courteous. Their pastries are amazingly fresh! Even their cakes look delicious. Will definitely come back again to try their other delicacies.
Nice cute little bakery you can even sit in to have a bite! Strawberry mousse cake is their most popular and my favourite cake too. Most reps are nice but could use a upgraded renovation
I had to call in to place a delivery order, but the total price was reasonable for the quality of the service. The cake was delicious, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful!
I was a loyal customer at Gerhard’s Cafe for many years. Recently I am very disappointed with their cake . The cake is very soggy and leaks out oil when compressed. So disappointed!!!
Happy with everything I purchased. Their Rum balls are legit (good flavor, correct texture, etc)!! The cookies are perfect to have with a nice coffee or tea. Will be back.
Very nice experience. Enjoyed coffee, tea and cakes. Friendly service and they happily moved tables around to accommodate our group and stroller. Will definitely go back.
Quiet little bakery and coffee shop. Excellent pastries (especially German). They make a Bienstick (spp) that is really delicious - it was my Grandfather's favorite.
One of my favorite lunch spots, my favorite is the quiche with garden salad and my favorite chai tea. Desserts are phenomenal, love them all. Service is exceptional.
I ordered Strawberry Meringue Torte 10inches. I am happy about how the cake is delightfully created. The taste is so good and you will not regret having it …
Sold a very expensive whipped cream cake for my birthday that was sour by the next day. Lied and said it was fresh! Waste of money and was disappointing!
Affordable, authentic, homemade foods, fresh and makes you feel good after eating it. Support your local businesses!! Also loved the interior inside.
A pleasant and quiet little café, great for a quick bite or light meal, very friendly service, also try a piece of cake or cookie, it tastes great!
This is the 2nd time I purchased this cake from the cafe with disappointing results. What is described in the photos is NEVER what you receive!
First time here to buy a cake, and it was absolutely amazing. It's really what you're paying for - good food. Their cakes weren't too sweet
Amazing and cute cafe with the most cozy decor. Most delicious cakes ever. Everything is prepared fresh. Worth visiting zillion times.
Incredible cakes ! So impressed. Expensive but worth it . If you want a quality cake don't think twice as you will be blown away .
Place was a little pricey, but the call was very good and fresh tasting, very friendly and helpful staff, and they take credit!
I ordered a custom cake for my daughers first birthday and it was awesome. Their service is also really good and professional
Pretty delicious cakes. Although the Black forest cake is not as dense as I thought it would be still pretty delicious.
Great cakes and coffee. Very homey and cozy atmosphere! Customer service was excellent and exceeded my expectations.
The strawberry cake is soooo delicious. I was late when I picked up, the staff waited for me. They were so nice!
Great service. Very enjoyable cakes. Wife loved the no drip teapot and the fact the tea was dreaming hot.
The sandwiches could use a bit of work but the baked goods are fresh and delicious. Coffee was also good.
Picked this Cafe out of curiosity and I am very pleased I went. Probably the healthiest thing I've eaten.
Really cute place with great treats for everyone! Feels like you just walked into a small town bakery.

The Black Forest cake and sugar-free apple strudel were very good! Great value for the price, too.
This us a small but nice little place to go for a cup of tea. They have some really nice desserts.
Everyone working there is extremely nice. They do have sugar free dessert options which is great!
Got a really tasty hot chocolate here! Super lovely staff and a cute place for a pastry!
Great little spot. Their cakes are the best! A bit on the expensive side, but worth it.
Ordered the sugar free chocolate mousse cake. It is delicious !! Will order again.
I ordered a great cake, but I would have loved to stay for lunch or afternoon tea!
Cute place ! Really good coffee , the croissant is amazing. Service is good !
Great cakes. Staff are wonderful. Keep my coffee cup full.
