Decided to check this place out and they sure have some good sweets! The atmosphere is a bit odd (it feels bare and a bit dark inside?), but no ones really coming here for ambience. We got every kind of tart, plus the Eh! Bar and a chocolate cake. I'm not entirely sold on the raspberry or apple crumble tarts but I do appreciate the different tart crust than usual. The chocolate cake is flourless so once you get over the slightly different texture/dryness, the flavour is great. The lemon tart is deceivingly lemony and it's great too. The butter tarts are different than I'm used to but that's a good thing, it turns out! I loved the bit of crunch, and the distinct flavour. It's got such a perfect texture and flavour balance. My favourite however is their Eh bar, a mix between a nanaimo bar and butter tart! Fantastic!! And awesome prices too! Only $3 for a good sized Eh bar! I am definitely going to come back. I recommend it if you're in the area, and even if you're not but looking for a good buttertart or to try the Eh bar! :D
Today was my first time trying out this bakery. I bought a butter tart and empanada. Before leaving the store, I put both items in my backpack. After my walk home, I took out my butter tart to eat and half of the filling had leaked into the paper bag it was in. I guess the filling is not the traditional gelatinous type filling you see in typical butter tarts and is more on the liquid side. Though most of the filling had leaked out, the tart was still very good! It is definitely on the sweeter side so have a cup of tea or milk ready. Even though I mostly just ate crust, I'd go back to try a complete one. It's on the slightly pricey side for me ($4/tart), so I'll have to wait before I return to treat myself. Again, be warned that the butter tart does not travel well. I wish I was warned, but learned the hard way. I'm thankful the sticky filling didn't get all over my backpack!

After coming onto Google reviews, I regret not trying the butter tart…yet! I don’t head down to Gerrard St often but when I do, I love doing a mini food/bakery tour and this is a MUST to visit. Absolutely love their sticky toffee pudding, ginger cookies and pumpkin pie blondie squares! I actually buy a few to freeze so I can continue to enjoy them until my next visit. I tried a meat roll (not empanada or pot pie) but wasn’t my favourite as I found it a little dry.

I usually buy the big shaped ginger cookie but when i went to the bakery, it was sold out so i tried the small cookies in a pack. I bite and chew it but its not the same soft cookie that i usually buy. Its snaps like a hard cookie. At least, the chocolate cake is good. Update:Nov 30,2020. I ate the remaining small ginger cookie and it was as soft as ever. Maybe the first few on top layer of cookies are hard because of the air. Overall i love it.. i will just give 4 stars as for the 1st top of few cookies are hard.
One of my favourite blueberry scones in the city. Just the right amount of blueberry, sugar and butter in the scone. They can stand on their own, don’t need to reheat them, add butter or jam. Nice and crumbly on the outside, and the right texture of softness on the inside. Their empanadas are great too! Iv had the cheeseburger one which actually tasted like a cheese burger. The chicken curry empanadas was amazing too. I haven’t tried their pies yet but they look great. Everything is reasonably priced. Solid Bakery.
The baked goods, both sweet and savoury, are so delicious! This has become our "special occasion" bakery, but not because of the cost (it's very affordable vs other fancier bakeries), just because it's a bit of a drive for us. Always worth the trek though! The empanadas are great, so are the butter tarts, butter tarts cake, and the most amazing thing I've tried there is the half-nanaimo half-butter tart treat. It's somehow both those things at once and absolutely delicious. Staff are always friendly too!
Scarlett Provided EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE even though the store was about to close in 5 minutes, which I was not aware of. She was very patient. It was my first time buying cookies from here, and they are FIRE !!!!! -ginger -sprinkles -chocolate chip -peanut butter I will definitely go back !!!!!! Thanks again Scarlett for accommodating me and not closing the store.

We got the mushroom empanada and a butter tart. Both were delicious. There was a lot of mushroom filling and the pastry itself was buttery and just the right amount of salt. Just wish the crust was thicker so it wouldn’t be as floppy when holding. The butter tart had maple notes to it. I definitely would come back and try their other items!

This place smelled so go that I had to go in a get a butter tart (not photographed). The pecan butter tart was delicious if a little expensive, would definitely recommend. Went back for a little birthday treat and they sadly didn't have any butter tarts with pecans in them so I tried the apple tart. It was just okay, pastry was fine and the filling wasn't anything special. Would definitely go back for butter tarts but not the apple one.
I bought two 4" Buttertart cake and Carrot cake. They were looking very nice, the guy who served us was helpful and explained that before eating we had to let them at room temp for some time. The cakes were too sweet. The cream was very grainy, very sweet and buttery. We couldn't eat too much of it. The sponge was very dry. Overall it was not a pleasant experience and I don't think I will buy from them in the near future .
It took me so long to finally go here and now I know I'll be heading back! I placed an order for a carrot cake and stick toffee pudding and they were all delicious! I love that the cakes come in smaller size options. I got one extra sauce for the sticky toffee pudding but it wasn't even necessary after warming up the portion for about 20 seconds. I will be back for all my baked good needs!
I saw this place on a Facebook post about their butter tart cakes, and I had to come try them out. Their empanadas are fantastic, meat pies are delicious and the butter tarts did not disappoint! Needless to say I have returned there a few times, and will keep coming back! The service is great as well, and the girl at the counter has made some wonderful recommendations.
Incredible little bakery. We tried the balsamic mushroom and the butter chicken empanadas and they were both stunning. The butter tart really is the best in the city. It definitely better with a coffee of some sort otherwise you will drown in the delicious richness of the butter tart. We also tried the sticky toffee pudding which was stellar as well. Love this place!
My absolutely favourite bakery and we're so fortunate that they are within walking distance of our house :) The tourtiere is wonderful at Christmas, but honestly all of their savoury pies are delicious. We also love their squares and bars, and we often buy the frozen scones to bake at home. The cakes are also excellent. Love this place!
Everything here is delicious but their butter tart cake- yes, BUTTER TART CAKE- is outstanding. So is the pumpkin blondie offered in the Fall. Last year I set a reminder to get one. I forgot my partner’s birthday, but the pumpkin blondie I scheduled. It’s that good. Also staff are always helpful & friendly. Love this local bakery.
Amazing service! You can order any cake in advance, choose from good variety of flavors and sizes, and even order pick up in Black Dog Cafe, if this spot is closer to you! We had flourless mousse cake and strawberry cheesecake. Absolutely delicious! And the prices are sweet too :) We’ll definitely come back to try other flavors!
Best butter tarts in the city in my opinion. The real gems though are in the savoury pastries, specifically their empanadas. Their cheeseburger and meatball are my favourite and seem to sell out frequently. The mini sausage rolls are great as well. Highly recommend. PS, their ice cream cookie sandwiches are very good as well!
My husband bought my birthday cake from here last year, and I reciprocated for his since their cakes are so amazing!!!!! All their food is exceptional. Do not pay attention to the 1 star ratings, these are anti-vax /anti-mask losers! All the best to Gerrard St Bakery, I will come by more often to support you. ❤❤❤
My friend and I dropped into the bakery yesterday, I was looking for sausage rolls ,they were out so I picked up a couple of Korean empanadas!! They were soo good ! Anything I have ever gotten from this bakery has been the bomb ! Highly recommended

This is THE place to go for a special occasion cake - or even just a little special treat to brighten your day! Beautiful, mouthwatering desserts that taste truly decadent. If you want to organize a special custom order, they are super nice and accommodating. Delicious AND kind - doesn’t get any better!
I came in one day because their sign claimed they had the best butter tarts in the city, and they weren't lying! So rich and tasty, in a wide, flat, tasty shell - definitely worth the $4. All of their cakes look amazing, but I don't know if I can bring myself to order anything other than a butter tart.
This place is a little gem! The tarts are incredible - I tried the butter tart (perfectly caramelized flaky pastry, filling is rich but not too heavy, no raisins!), a lemon tart (delicious and wonderfully sour), and a strawberry rhubarb tart (a little bite of spring) Buy everything, enjoy everything!
This place is a cozy and snug corner in the old East Chinatown. They serve Western pastries. I visited on a Saturday morning with minimal traffic. I got their cherry frangipane tart, which its bottom was crisp but lacking cherry flavors. The frangipane was however quite well done and homemade.
Came for the “best butter tarts in Toronto”, but was disappointed that these are not the classic deep dish gooey kind, rather very shallow centres with admittedly nice flaky crust. They’re more of a refined, or dieter’s version, but at $5 each they just didn’t satisfy the butter tart craving.
Extremely friendly service and all around environment. There was no wait even with a few people in store placing orders. I did not realize that this bakery only served desserts and sweets that do not use yeast. Tried some empanadas, tarts, and a delicious brownie. It was all fantastic.
Went there specifically on the recommendation from the Rolling Pin for their butter tarts. I have to say, they did not disappoint! Not too sweet, not too gooey, just about perfect and a great size. Also tried some carrot cake and a cookie, both fantastic. Can't wait to go back again!
Bought a small cheesecake and butter tart cake for a friend’s birthday. The cheesecake is so smooth and has great flavour - DEFINITELY will get again (and only $15!). The butter tart cake is very sweet but hey it’s butter tart cake! If you love butter tarts you’ll love this cake!
I’ve heard great things about this bakery and finally had this delicious Keylime pie for a celebration. It was a classic pie with freshly shaved lemon zest. The best part was the crust made from a buttery, flavourful graham cracker crust. Would highly recommend this Keylime pie!
Huge fan of Gerrard St. Bakery! Their granola is amazing and makes a perfect little gift for teachers or hosts or anyone. Especially recommend their coffee cake bar and empanadas. We love their cakes and although we haven't had a cream pie yet, I can not wait. They look so good!
We went because we heard it's the "best butter tarts". It's very sweet - like eating a tablespoon of brown sugar. The crust was a bit crispy instead of crumbly. It has such high ratings that I'll try going again as they had other dessert options and savoury pies.
I ordered the butter tart cake for my husband's birthday and it was so rich and decadent. The cake itself was like a dense pound cake and the icing was so flavourful. I also went by to get some of their amazing scones. In particular the cheese chive scone.
Tried their butter chicken pie last night when I was meaning to try their butter tart...just got drawn in. A little pricey for the size but yummy nonetheless. Service is great.. will come back to try their butter tarts next time. Totally forgot about it!
Easy to miss when you're walking by so watch your map closely! Hands down, best butter tart I've had! Gooey filling with a nice, thin but flaky crust. I also tried the butter chicken empanda, compact but filled generously with delicious chicken.
Gerrard St. Bakery is my go to for cakes for celebrations and family get togethers. The owner, Paul is one of the kindest people, and his staff follow suit. My partner has a nut allergy and Paul and his team have always taken the time and
I heard something about this bakery being famous for their butter tarts, so I was kind of bummed that they were gone/not there when I showed up, but a great (and deliciously chewy) compromise is the pecan square. Everything I've had from
The empanadas, the key lime pie, the sticky toffee puddings, the Mexican chocolate pie, the peanut butter and jelly pie? The chicken pot pie!! The brownies!! There is something for all seasons/meals/palates at Gerrard Street Bakery. They
Excellent lemon currant scone and spinach and feta quiche. I'm not a huge fan of scones but it was the best i've had in Toronto. Butter tart was good but not as tasty as last year, the filling consistency was a bit off. I was actually
Everything from Gerrard St. Bakery is out of this world, from sweet to savory. My personal favourites are scones, empanadas, pie and cheesecake. It's honestly worth every penny, and the staffs super friendly too!
Great customer service. Bought 2 buttermilk pecan tarts and a lemon tart. The buttermilk pecan tart was way too sweet but, the lemon tart was amazing. Will need to try more pastries in the near future.
An unreal hidden gem in the east end! I am yet to eat something from here that wasn’t out of this world! The food is delicious and the staff is always friendly and helpful. They have staple items,
Amazing tiny bakery in Toronto Riverdale area. Butter Tarts and Sticky Toffee Pudding are my faves! A bit pricey but where is it not pricey these days? Definitely excellent quality here. …
Outstanding!!!! The food was not only beautiful, but delicious!!!!! I didn't know what to order, so I ordered a lot to take out!!! It was worth the drive from Etobicoke. I definitely recomend.
The mini carrot cake is amazing! The taste was great and I couldn’t find that size cake anywhere else.

Friendly people here. They were very informative on their baked goods. $4 per tart is pretty good. I tried the huge brownie sample and that was really good ($3 retail).
Had my first Pumpkin Spiced item for year! Thoroughly enjoyed the Pumpkin Square andthe empanadas are fantastic! Worth the walk to the Gerrard Street Bakery everytime!!
Their empanadas, butter tarts and strawberry buttermilk pie are so delicious. And everyone is so friendly. Love this little place!
The butter tarts are phenomenal!! Amazing flaky crust and delicious maple flavored filling. Worth the trip!! Yummy.
