I had the worst experience at this location yesterday August 19th/2022, even as I have been a good customer for years. An employee blocked and assaulted me while I tried to run in a do a quick purchase. They close at 8:00 p.m and it was within minutes of closing; but that does not warrant their placing a hand on me; or blocking me forcibly. The one guy actually punched me as I tried to come in. I was left in visible physical shock.I still am feeling shaken after last night's distressing situatiion & filing a police report. One man (supervisor) joined the other employee rudely & readily yelling at witnesses to "shut up", while I was on the phone with 911, while he was touching me. The witness was corraborating what was happening, so no wonder the supervisor wanted her silenced. Furhermore, he impersonated the owner claiming to be Kevin. He is not. I want and need to atteng this store, but I can with such behaviour from the staff. In the end they walked away cowardly before police arrived. I can't help but wonder if they're even legal to work here?? Moreover and separately, they are so rushed *at closing time* ; and rip off security tags leaving holes in the material. They also missed completing a refund to my debit card, ie, they kept the item but failed to do a refund....again at the end of day on a separate occasion. But being so aggresive does not look well on a store that has been there since 1961( I think). The owner, Kevin, needs to look harder at maybe having store security given some of the clientele that often goes there; who are clearly homeless, have mental health and drug issues. All in the heart of nearby man and women shelters in the Byward area. How do they the treat them then, if they treat a reasonably looking person like this?? ...I wonder why such a shift in this store.
Wish I could rate this place higher because the staff are amazingly kind, helpful and patient people and the prices are unbeatable, especially for being in the downtown core. Sadly I can not because this store often is selling past due products and they do not restock on a very regular basis. The store layout is a bit confusing (I think they could benefit greatly from reorganizing products in a way that makes more sense). They also open late way too often (large crowds usually waiting outside) and the online hours vs what they have posted have contradicted each other often. I frequently come here for milk for my son since they always have it for 5-6 dollars, the convenience stores rarely have the liter bags (and if they do they’re $8-10). One issue I’ve run into is almost every time at least one of the bags is damaged and leaking, please whoever is stocking the milk, handle with more care. This store is not accessible, I try to come without my stroller because if I bring it I have to leave it at the top of the stairs and the people who chip outside of the store aren’t the people I trust the most not to take it.
I remember when this Giant Tiger opened in 1983! I was a 10 year old daughter of poor struggling immigrants who were thrilled to found out there was an affordable store in town. My friend and I bought our trendy flashy pink socks and scarves for $1 each! Throughout the years the store changed much and today includes a selection of cheap groceries…in fact, some of the cheapest produce in town. While Loblaws ( the most expensive grocery store in Ottawa) always has green bananas that never rippen, GT always has perfect big plump yellow bananas at a fraction of the price. The bonus , in the past few year they have hired incredible staff that is super nice. Most stores give you such a hard time with price matching. They advertise it so much but when it comes to doing the price match they find an excuse to refuse it! GT will Happily price match anything. The guy with the beard at the cash is SUPER nice! The Spanish woman in the clothing dept upstairs is also wonderful ( working at GT for 20 plus years )! I’m happy with this store. Great job GT☺️
Small, Often out of stock I have essentially stopped shopping at giant tiger unless I am already standing in front of the store shopping for something else in the area. Every time I have gone for the past year they are out of stock of one or more items. Selection at this store is small, about the size of a convenience store for food items. I also dislike the sales signage since they started the VIP club. Rather than telling me the price, it says "save $2" with the word save in small print making it hard to distinguish which items are on sale and which ones just have a "saving". I don't like attempts at being tricked. Just give me a fair price and let it ride. If I don't offer my phone number to get the discount, the clerks often will not ask meaning you will pay regular price for the "sale" item. Vagrants all around the streets in the area as well. Area needs a clean up. Simply a waste of time.
Unfortunately, this locations seems to never have new arrivals in stock. Items advertised in the flyer are not in store. Clothing seems out of date/from last season. Store location isn't the greatest despite being in the byward market. There are always people at the front door harassing people for money. Not a safe place to commute with a bike. It WILL get stolen. It has 3 floors, but the 3rd floor has been closed for a few years now due to lack of inventory...
It gets three stars because of the nostalgia. It used to be a fun place to shop but now it just looks old, sloppy and dirty. I pulled on the door handle back to back weeks at 7:50pm and both times it was locked. Sign says closed at 8. Well....if it's lights out and locked up at 7:50...they were ready to head out well before 7:50 which means there is no desire to be any better either so good luck to Giant Tiger because THIS?....was your flagship store. Sad.
Reasonable selection of groceries and household supplies. HOWEVER: do NOT count on inventory information online matching what's in store, EVER. Good if you're nearby and stopping in to see if they have what you need but if you're planning a trip to stock up on something, you're far better off hitting up the St.Laurent or Walkley Road locations. In the plus column: as with other GT's, they do price match again. Bring your phone with the Flipp App open.
This Giant Tiger "NEVER" has advertised flyer items in stock! Good Luck in ever seeing the product again if you get a rain check. One thing it does have, is plenty of people sitting outside begging for change. Keep your eye on your bike while visiting the store.
I actually fell down the stairs today pulling my cart up. Hurt my leg and elbow and banged my head. Thanks to the customer who said wait a minute and I'll help you carry it up with you. I'm lucky I wasn't hurt too much, it could have been worse.
Interesting layout of the store. Clothing and apparel upstairs and food and other stuff downstairs. I was looking for a bathroom scale and the employees were able to show me where they usually hold them, but they didn't have any. They did,
Imagine a cross between Walmart and Dollarama, that's the best way i can describe it. Prices are reasonable and quality is decent. It's a good one stop shop for your food and household needs. Only thing i dont like about this place is
The staff are friendly and welcoming. Good atmosphere and feel safe. However there isn't enough clothing/shoe collection so it's better to get grocery there if you do end up shopping there! Great price though and good quality items
Excellent large department store. Beautiful ladies clothing and nice clothes for men. Great home ideas for redecorating and simply looking for household items. Prices are reasonable and a large fresh food area. Excellent frozen
I really love their canned peaches, I bought 4. I just ate a tasty portion. Yummy on my tummy. Keep up the good kid with never running out. For over 25years when I first bought one can. I Love Giant Tiger in the byward market.
I've been a GT customer for many years and many GT stores. The staff have always been excellent and caring. This location and its staff are top notch. Great service lots of variety to choose from and great sale prices
Never have a lot of stuff in flyer, no access for the handicapped, and some items in the bread area are not fresh, and the line ups are ridiculous; it’s pretty sad when a customer has to ask for another cashier!
Bargain store. It’s got everything from shoes to nuts. Good quality items at low prices. Not wheelchair accessible but there is a button outside that you can press and someone will come out to help you.
Doesn't open on time manager is Extremely rude and made everyone stand outside in the freezing cold while she stood at the door staring at us, waiting for her late staff, bad location. Good luck.
This Gian Tiger has been there forever. I always like to go because it reminds me of my younger shopping time with my mom. Memories You can always find a bargain or two.
Definitely not the GT store with the most selection of items in the NCR, but it's ok. They have most home essentials stuff at a very affordable price.
The staff here are great, they have a very difficult job dealing the less fortunate trying to steal products. It's important to support them.
Honestly I was just in and out there was an incident there I was not comfortable so I will not return to the one in the byward market
I come to shop here many occasions. Staff here give excellent customer service. Prices are pretty reasonable for grocery items.
10 minutes past 10 and they’re still closed! Over 8 people waiting to go in and shop and there’s no one to open to store!
It's handy if you live in market only close grocery place is farmboy . Probably cheapest place for tobacco products
Pretty unique building. I was looking for something and a staff member went through great effort to help me.
Quick and friendly service. Decent pricing. It's the GT boutique.
Spectacular services and great prices
