My child transferred to Brooks AC in 8th grade from Morgan Park AC because we were told by the principal that Brooks benchmark tests students to place them in more accelerated courses than what is offered at MP. This was a lie. The general theme at Brooks is how bad MP is and how much better they are, but this has not been our experience. Some teachers are more interested in overloading the students with nonsense busy work and grading them down to give them the experience of working hard for a higher grade. Their standards based grading is supposed to give students opportunities for retakes, but most teachers don’t allow these. This system also punishes good students. If a test has 100 questions and the students get 3 or 4 wrong, their grade automatically falls to a 90 because many classes don’t allow for anything in-between 100 and 90. If your child gets a B in any courses, they don’t allow the credit on their transcripts, which really defeats the whole purpose of sending your children into an AC. Do yourself a huge favor and do not subject your children to this backwards environment. Kenwood and even the AC at MP are much better options.
I’m a parent at Brooks and would highly recommend this school to any family That has a child that is admitted here. The teachers and administrators are very engaged and encouraging with the students. They are also approachable and responsive to parents. This is a place where a child can blossom into their full academic potential with limitless opportunities to grow and hone their leadership skills through various clubs and activities. The facilities are excellent and some of the very best in the city. The campus is gated which keeps the students safe and secure at all Times. Kids leave this school fully prepared to enter college.
It’s an okay school, in my opinion. The school is academically rigorous but there’s so many little details. For one they are horrible at communicating important information, my sister almost missed the deadline for registration all because there was never a call, a note or anything to remind parents. And lastly it’s a bit too competitive, there’s nothing wrong with a school being competitive but when counselors talk you down just because you’re not going to a IVY League university is too much.

This school is an excellent facility and provides a wonderful and wholesome learning experience. The faculty here has excellent hospitality and the school offers many AP classes and has a very challenging curriculum. If you're up to the challenge, I'd definitely recommend Brooks College Prep.
It’s a very good school academic wise but the extra curricular activities some work and they need to take dance serious since it’s been atleast 5 dance teams throughout my 4 years there. There’s still no real dance instructor nor a space for the teams to practice at other than the rotundas.
Hi I’m in 8th grade and I applied to Gwendolyn brooks and I wanted to know how it is to go here is fun and what activities do they have to offer and do the teachers actually care?
Don’t go here! It’s a treacherous experience that no one and I mean NO ONE should have to go through. Some of the teachers are nice though.
Sports teams are terrible. Most teachers aren't good and aren't consistent. And don't even get me started on the kids …
We are each other's harvest; we are each other's business; we are each other's magnitude and bond. Gwendolyn Brooks
