Got an appointment scheduled after a referral from my doctor. (Took a while but wait time is long and that’s understandable). Was told they were going to call to confirm it. They never did. Between my school bag containing my agenda being stolen, me being in finals in a law program, raising a 4 year old and working as a legal assistant, I got my dates mixed up. It didn’t help that I was waiting on a confirmation call that never came. When I finally called to see when the appointment would be they informed me of this. Fair enough, I apologized. When I asked if I could reschedule it (ready to wait the time again) I was told no because they have too many no shows? No shows that no show because they don’t want your service and are too lazy to call and cancel don’t typically call you to apologize and reschedule. If someone gets a referral because they have a genuine health concern, it sort of sucks to just deny them service. This whole situation is incredibly frustrating, I am now assuming I need to go to another appointment with my doctor, explain to him what happened, get another referral with another facility and hope it isn’t this place? Just reschedule me and make me wait the wait time, Jesus. I’m not asking for special treatment just TREATMENT at the least. Anyways, I’m sure the service and staff might be good but I guess I’ll never know because they are just not accommodating whatsoever.

This is a health care facility and you would expect professionalism, cleanliness, compassion and sadly they have NEITHER! My father in law was transferred to bruyere 2 weeks ago and today he was taken to back to the civic with pneumonia. Im not blaming his ilness on the hospital but the fact that his room was not cleaned for the entire 2 weeks minus the 1 time my wife had to basically demand and force someone to come and clean. When she approached the staff she was told they dont clean unless you ask them which is ridiculous since rhis is a damn hospital, by name its a hospital atleast. The nurses are pompous and arrogant and GOD FORBID you speak English because that's the Forbidden language in that hospital . Again they seem to work only by force and were annoyed by having to actually care and do their job. When you are in a vulnerable situation and being in a hospital is one of them, you need someone that's it makes you feel safe, feel good about the moment although temporary, someone who shows sympathy even if theyre faking it and someone you can easily apptoach without the fear of repercussions or judgment and sadly those characteristics that a real nurse has is missing along with many other things. This is in no way an attack on race or religion or culture it's criticism learning experience if used correctly and I hope that Im the last critic of this place of medicine

We were transferred to Bruyère’s Palliative care floor from a local hospital. The care was night and day. The nurses and doctors took their time to speak with me daily (often several times a day) about my father’s needs and care. Although my dad wasn’t responsive, they spoke to him with so much love. One nurse called him “mon cœur”. They would ensure that he was always cleaned and lotioned. They did his mouth care regularly which was really important. We had a private room (the norm) which meant that my dad was able to rest as if he were in his own home. The staff went above and beyond to ensure that family members were taken care of and comfortable. They offered me warm blankets from the warmer when I needed a rest. Volunteers came by daily (2:30 pm) to offer family members coffee and/or ice cream. When a patient on the floor passes away, the staff and all visitors take a moment of silence to pay their respect. My dad was treated with great dignity and respect from the entire medical team. The chaplain was also a great support to me. I wish our health care system was built on a model of care like this. To all the staff on the 5th floor, my family and I are forever grateful for the amazing care that you gave my father.

Family member died prematurely due to lack of competencies, and understaffing. Physician prescribed an inappropriately high dose of medication that slowed down my relatives respiration. He had never taken narcotics, was not admitted for pain management nor was he experiencing pain. Physician admitted pain meds prescribed “to keep patient comfortable.” To the contrary, my uncle was utterly confused, acting irrationally and climbing out of bed and falling on his head resulting in a complete delirious state, and dying shortly after. Our family believes he likely had a brain bleed, or stroke. The hospital took no accountability and required family advocating and putting pressure on the hospital to send him out to the ER where he succumbed to his injuries hours post fall. This has been a traumatic experience for our family, especially as we did not anticipate for a painful and unnecessary premature death. Our family has not been able to grieve the death of our loved one as we are still processing and attempting to find closure.

The screener at the front desk is demanding visitors must wear face shields. However, most employees don't wear face shields. If you question it. the hospital would say you have a bad attitude. Why hospital criticize visitors and  allow their own people to spread viruses? ============================ The parking lot attendants have dramatically improved since my previouse comments. They become very friendly, and very helpful. ======================= Visitors go to Bruyere not for fun. Either they are patients, or their loved ones are sick. However, the parking lot attendants do lots of verbal insults at the visitors. Such as, -Did I say you can park at this spot? What is wrong with you? -Your face is the saddest face. -If you want to damage your car, you can park there. -Demanding visitors say thanks to them. -Yellings. -etc. The parking lot at St Vincent Hospital is also very busy. But their attendants are very patient, very polite, and very helpful. Why are attendants at Bruyere hospital so unprofessional, so rude?

The WORST of the WORST!!! DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT send your family or friends there, if you care about them!! My elderly father was sent there for palliative care. He had advanced stage COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). As soon as he arrived, they DOUBLED his dose of morphine, without him even asking for it!!! If you know ANYTHING at all, you would know that morphine completely slows you down and IS NOT recommended in high amounts to anyone with breathing difficulties. EVEN, a doctor who saw him after the dose was doubled (a different doctor, not the one who administered the double dose), ADMITTED that the dose was way too high for him. HE DIED A FEW HOURS LATER!!!! Absolutely DESPICABLE place, they do not care about elderly people, and they just want to get rid of them to save money. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT send your loved ones there!!!

My Mom was admitted to the hospice wing because she is at end stage of life and this is the first time she's had pain. She started moaning and saying help me. Ringed for the nurse. She said she would be right back. Nope. 5 min, 10 min, 15 mins go by all with Mom moaning in the worst way from the pain. I go out to the hall find the nurse who is now busying herself with shift change. I again ask for pain meds for Mom. She brushes me off. Also when my mom suffered a stroke earlier that year, she fell in the bathroom with a nurse's aide and the nurses aide never reported it. She never fully recovered. Some staff members are amazing but others are on the opposite end of the spectrum and shouldn't be there.

BEWARE BRUYERE. If you have any love or respect for your family member or friend, you DO NOT place them in this hospital, because their life there will be cut short in mysterious ways. The hospital is dingy. The hallways and rooms are dark and depressing. If an emergency happens to a patient, it takes hours and hours to have a doctor seeing them. But, what is worst, is that most of the doctors of Bruyère are incompetent, and have no shame, nor conscience, nor respect for human life. They have absolutely no problem eliminating a patient in order to provide his or her room to someone else. What matters to these doctors is one single reality: MONEY. This is outrageous, to say the least.

It is no wonder that the Palliative Care unit is the gold standard in this hospital given the extraordinary commitment to excellence , compassion , patient first concerns and staffed by top professional doctors and nurses who thrive to make patients feel like they're family. Furthermore , communications are outstanding with relatives or family permitted to visit . Nurses Laura and Hannah are top of the class in all respects and exude a calming demeanor and timely care. Doctors Cris and head Dr Lawlor are excellent . The Chaplin provided good information and wise suggestions . Wonderful humans all in one place who helped me get through it

The doctors of Bruyère hospital are LOOSERS and skilled in getting rid of patients very quickly; I mean in SENDING THEM TO HEAVEN. As soon as you bring your loved one to the hospital, a team of doctors come to see you and tell you how bad his or her health is. They are DUMB to the point they think relatives of patients are ignorant. Once you have left the hospital and kept your loved one in their care, the morphine injections start taking place at a terrible speed, until he or she is completely dead. These doctors are the worst on the face of the earth, they have no morale, no heart, no conscience whatsoever. Their main goal is money.

  • Clif. C.

Not a perfect facility but it is patient first and staff second. This is very important to remember. The Palliative Care Unit has dedicated staff that actually physically run to assist their dying patients. Too many tasks does not deter these brave medical professionals. Should staff get caught doing anything to make a patient uncomfortable staff will be dealt with quickly by management. Other facilities in the NCR are staff first and patient second. Remember that Elizabeth Bruyere has had many financial concerns which were created by lack of provincial funding due to fiscal mismanagement thanks to Ontario govt energy policies.

Don't you just love it when over 90% of the medical facilities are broken, including the nurse call button for emergency situations, and the place is so ridiculously understaffed that no one ever has any time to come to you even when your loved one is having trouble breathing and is about to faint? Ottawa hospitals are absolute trash and this place takes the cake of it all. Hire more damn nurses--and just a suggestion but maybe people who can actually speak clear English would be helpful--and train them better. The 'someone needs help' bell is ringing 24/7 here. This place is the one that needs help.

Nurses, doctors are amazing. We did felt attack by the floor manager. She seems on our entire family's back. My sisters kids that comes from very far away felt that she was picking on them. Even myself, she's my baby sister. My sister wanted to die at home with her family, she was afraid, she made us promise to not let her alone. Now non of us feel like we should be there. Her son came from Alberta to be at her side, and he feels attack by that lady. We are stress, tired, caring, but anxiety when the manager come. Donation that was suppose to be done on behalf of my sister will go somewhere else.

My Mom went in for rehanilitation after a surgery at the Ottawa Civic. She has complained about bad staff lying to other staff and neglect. She tells me the fod is beyond awful with no variety (same thing for breakfast lunch and dinner day after day). I have been unable to speak with anyone or visit. The Ottawa Civic was very accommodating and spoke with me daily. My Mom has been in this hospital for 10 das and bo one has spoken to me about her care. She is a senior and should not have to be her own advocate. Thisis unacceptable. I'm very unhappy.

Terrible hospital! I am really disturbed with how my friend was treated here. He was treated by Dr. Christopher John Barnes. This doctor does not care about the actual patient, and is only concerned with one thing, and that is to get rid of the patient as quickly as possible. He administers very high doses of pain killers, WAY too high for the patient, causing several side effects. My friend ended up passing away as a result of this doctor's malpractice. This hospital is terrible and if you are considering going there, DON'T!!

This hospital has some of the rudest receptionists I have ever dealt with. They make you regret calling and asking to see your family physician. Just today I called to set an appointment with my doctor and got yelled at because I didn’t want to see a resident doctor. Mind you the next available space my doctor had was the day after of the set date I was given with a resent doctor. How is one day difference that much of a big deal? What is going on in this place… Mental health checkups are needed on the staff.

I’ve been attending the Photoderm clinic every morning since April, with another 2ish weeks to go. I also had to do a chest x-ray yesterday at the medical imaging room on the 1st floor & also met with one of your Dermatologists back in April. ALL the staff have been absolutely AMAZING!! Extremely professional, efficient, empathetic, and knowledgeable, and just nice people. I just wanted to leave this review to let you all know how grateful & thankful I am for everyone & all that you do. ❤️ ~David K.

We feel extremely lucky for my dad to get excellent medical care during his stay! Dr Deveaus, all the caring nurses, PT&OT therapists, the social worker and staff on the 3rd floor (Geriatric Rehabilitation) went above and beyond the call of duty to care for my 93 years old dad, who has all kinds of difficulties other than physical disabilities also lacking of hearing, vision, and language. We can't thank you enough for your expertise, kindness, and compassion! You are simply the best!

  • Chantal Charette

My mother was brought to elisabeth bruyere with end of life COPD. The staff was wonderful. They were caring and understanding and took care of my mom. I couldn't ask for better. Every single staff member was kind and compassionate. The doctors cared and spoke with us daily. Even under staff they still went above and beyond. I would send my family member there before any other hospital. My mother was well taken care of and treated with respect. Thankyou all staff for your hard work.

  • I R

WARNING! This hospital is dangerous! Do not send your loved ones here. They do not care about people of old age. They are very neglectful and won’t respond to a patient when they press the emergency button! There is 100% confirmed malpractice going on! Their end of life care is traumatizing to their patients - if you want your parent or loved one to leave in peace - do not go here. At this hospital they will die in pain, stress and agony!

  • J Pilon

The care that my dad received from the Palliative Care staff was nothing but amazing. They were very loving, caring and there for my dad and for me and my family. They really took care of my dad. They would answer any of my questions and explain everything to us. This helped us in so many ways. He passed away peacefully and with no pain. There are many Angels working at Bruyère. Thank you Palliative Care staff!! ❤️❤️

  • Colleen Wright

My mother is presently receiving stroke rehabilitation care and so far the service is wonderful. Dr.'s have called to update me, the physiotherapist Leah called to update me and the nurses are very kind and caring overall. The food even has been good. They are conscientious with infection control also. My mother and I are happy with the hospital and staff. Way to go 4th floor! Thank You

  • Tony Murray

I am very disappointed with this hospital. A close friend of mine was transferred here. Their service is very slow, and many times they don't answer the emergency call button. A lot of the equipment is broken, and the building itself is very outdated. I'm not impressed with the doctors either. Overall a mediocre experience.

  • heidi Ramzi

amazing staff, genuinely caring and professional. Thank you to the wonderful team of doctors, nurses and managers. To name a few of the wonderful and amazing team, a heartfelt THANK YOU caring for my husband, thank you Mario, Laura, Wabi, Linda, Rowena, Buena, Maha and others that I may not remember their names.

  • sylvie faulkner

My brother is in the stroke rehab clinic at Bruyère and we have tried numerous times to reach the treatment team, without success. Very frustrating especially since he's to be discharged in a couple of weeks. I don't understand why this is happening and in my opinion, very bad services.

  • Helen Ebert

My mother was there for therapy following a broken leg. She was treated so poorly. The Dr's don't listen, they are just interested in getting patients in and out. Heartless place, don't take your loved ones there. I'm a retired RN and could not believe this horrible experience.

  • B G

Do not go here. The staff is beyond mean. The doctor was dismissive on multiple occasions. The palliative patients are treated very poorly. I will never return here and I suggest you keep your elderly loved ones far away! I am pursuing legal action.

  • Gabrielle Dufour

Great nurses at hospice Need to keep on top of medical issues oneself to ensure loved one is taken care of appropriately Peaceful location except for parking-be careful where you park

  • P M

Terrible experience. Negligent staff who disrespect the elderly. I have read the reviews, and I agree with them, this hospital has no respect for human life.

  • James Sheridan

The stroke rehab on the third floor at Bruyere downtown Ottawa is outstanding..I started rehab late Feb and finished June 7...kudos to all staff..fantastic

  • Joseph Breihan

I searched google for a 24 hour hospital. This is not one. This is a geriatric facility for residents only, as the information desk informed me.

  • Brenda Thomas

Although they are understaffed for all the people they try to assist, the staff I have met have been knowledgeable and very helpful.
