Awful, shaming and cruel service both through letters and phone calls. I had several extremely unpleasant phone calls just trying to get some help with filing my tax returns, and when I told the man what tax bracket I was in, he went on a rant about how low income workers still get all the benefits of the NHS without putting in as much as everyone else. He really tried to make me feel ashamed of my low income and was no help to me in filling in my taxes whatsoever. He unpromptedly told me that I needed to pay national insurance (I don't, due to my income), and that if I didn't I was scrounging from the system. I filed a complaint but haven't heard anything back. I work hard, but it's not my fault I don't get paid well for it.
I work in one of Home office buildings and on 7th January 2021 a letter was posted by mistake from Germany to our building when it meant to go to HMRC. I took the letter there around 3.05pm but was received by an Italian accent receptionist that was rude , arrogant, dismissive and inconsiderate. He didn't care at all about the correspondence as he didnt kept it and did not give any reasonable explanation . He just didn't bother to look for the receiver ! Next time I won't bother neither to try to help, due to the waste of my time. Just feel sorry for the sender!
I had a very positive experience with HMRC Croydon. I had prepared what I needed to tell and ask them beforehand and called 8:00 am. Did not wait very long. A very kind lady put me through to a colleague who deals with certification of income from a foreign country and I received all the information I needed. It was very helpful and quick.
I am only giving one star because the option to give zero does not exist. Having been on hold for almost 1 hour, I gave my security information to a person who then put me back on hold, that was almost another hour ago. They close in less than 30 minutes and I do not hold out much chance of speaking to anyone before then.

this is my third time calling them, there must be a indication that the phone number isn’t working or wasting others time(mines included)You’re playing with people’s life! This matter should be taken seriously
0/10! Terrible so called “service”! Repeatedly phoned all day Friday,now constantly since 09.30… one number “not recognised”! Others insufficient options… impossible to get to speak to a person!
The idea that this is any form of service is outrageous. Ridiculous wait times. I guess they're all still working from home just to keep everyone safe. Then I get thanks for calling goodbye.
No matter when you call, 'our advisors are busy, goodbye' and they hang up. They want our money, take it, but don't want to give any back. What a world we live in …
Keep you on hold like ages; absolutely rubbish customer service. Doesn’t think twice take people’s money in their pocket but reluctant to return it back

Terrible on the hold for 1hr and a half because the website is terrible to sort an issue that I had already put on my record
1 hour and 30 minutes on the phone and no answer...every 2 months I have to call because they keep changing my tax code
Entire HMRC are diacrace you can never speak yo anyone there is no clear phone number online
