"Absolutely delicious food"
One of my favourite places in Manchester to eat, top quality cooking from the small menu with at least two vegetarian options. Service is a bit more leisurely, but also there are only one or two staff serving an often bustling place, and it's never been a problem. The staff are really helpful, charming and have lovely accents. Just a bit worried that it will get too many trendy people coming in soon spoiling the atmosphere and driving the prices up... the mains have recently gone up by 14%. Suggestion for the restaurant: keep the prices low but serve a little less injera with the meals - there is always so much we have to either leave some or can barely breathe afterwards, it's such a shame to waste it. Interior is homely and relaxed and appears quite Ethiopian in style (I wouldn't know), with art and traditional looking decor. Only possible gripe is what someone else mentioned; that the injeras are not made from teff flour, which apparently is more authentic, but also healthier and gluten-free. They are made from a sour dough made with 70% rice flour and 30% wheat instead, still taste very nice! NB. Before and after pics show the only time we managed to not leave any injera behind :D
We decided to book Habesha after reading Giles Coren’s rave review of the restaurant in The Times. It is a very small restaurant up a spiral staircase, accessed through a disused kebab shop. We were looked after by one person who was incredibly polite and helpful. There are not many meal options, which helped us pick 4 dishes to share comfortable amongst 6 of us, plus several plates and baskets of injera, the Ethiopian fermented pancake. It was a novel experience scooping up the food with torn pieces of pancake (spoons are provided) and the beef, lamb, chicken and lentil dishes we ordered were excellent. The chicken in the thick, rich gravy I think was the group’s favourite, but I also really loved the lentil curry which came with pickles and a salad, as well as the cubed lamb. Very delicious, and ridiculously good value - £65 for 6 of us.

Visited lastnight, chuffed to eat cheap yet great food. Shame the portions were small but the traditional sour flatbread filled me up enough at the time. Each meal was about £11 minimum and cheap bottled beer at around £3.25. Lovely atmosphere seems very authentic and the staff were super friendly and polite, a tip well deserved. Only thing is finding the place was confusing but it’s on the corner and you’ve to go into the fast food place below then follow the spiral stairs up and you’ll have landed yourself in the habesha restaurant :) the lamb was lovely and tender. Open late as well (11pm)!

I found this place via Time Out website..I wanted to try something new and affordable..and yes I walked passed it even though I was following good maps haha. Coming up thr Spiral stairs i was greeted with a smile from Nebu ( I hope I spelt his name right.) Service was friendly gracious and efficient. Food was amazing..the taste of the Doro Wot was what was I was looking for walking round Manchester trying to figure out what I wanted to eat. Menu is simple but plentiful..atmosphere is calming and the music makes the vibe. Thank you for great tasting food and service. I love a place that doesn't make you feel rushed to finish. And this place is it.
Absolutely delicious food. It was busy (seems to be so at the weekends) but you can have a chat and just eat and drink. Amazing prices for the quality of food and the staff are incredibly friendly. I would highly recommend a visit here. It's a little confusing to find if you've never been, but the spiral staircase in the takeaway downstairs leads you up onto the second floor with the restaurant. Open even if takeaway isn't, due to separate doors which is very handy. Would recommend to anyone. They have both veggie and meat options and the veggie options seem safe for vegan (do check before ordering!) We will surely be back and bringing friends to enjoy!
This place has always been a favourite of mine. Been coming here for over 15 years and the quality of the food and atmosphere has been continuously great. It might not look much from the outside but once you are in the restaurant the staff are fantastic, very friendly and providing great service. Food is authentic and delicious. Very filling and great value for money. Highly recommended.

We were looking to try a different cuisine in Manchester and this restaurant popped up in google due to its highly rated reviews. An authentic Ethiopian restaurant. The place is simple and run by a brother and his sister (chef) serving authentic Ethiopian food. Limited menu yet so diverse with veg, chicken, beef and lamb. They have the local Ethiopian beer too. The best part is the hospitality by the owner himself coupled with delicious food which is truly reasonable. Do visit and try the food, sure to love it!

I had lunch at Habesha restaurant with a group of friends and it was a great experience. We were attended to by a nice waiter that was always smiling, we tried the Ethiopian dishes and it was awesome. The ambience and african decorations was also beautiful.

Wheelchair accessibility
The restaurant isn't wheelchair accessible because it's upstairs and there's no elevator.
An amazing find. Truly authentic with a lot of attention paid to the the quality, taste and presentation of food. We shared 3 dishes between us and were unable to finish despite wanting to eat more since the flavours are so amazing. There are 2 amazing vegetarian options, we had one and it really was great! Great service, comfortable environment and service was first class. Will definitely be back!

Two vegetarian options, both amazing!
The service was very nice and friendly, we arrived when the restaurant was half empty, we waited half an hour for food. We had beef and chicken with their traditional pancake. I have to praise the chicken which was made tasty and interestingly seasoned. On the other hand, I did not like the beef at all, the meat itself was of poorer quality and it was seasoned with very different spices for my taste.

Gets three stars instead of two because the staff were lovely. Otherwise the food is over hyped. The place is dingy.the curries are very bland. We ordered the lamb and beef dishes. The lamb one was alright. Make sure you visit the toilet before you visit as the toilets are from a horror movie. I don't understand the concept of injera(the dough or bread) which they serve with the meal. The fermented taste just didn't agree with me Won't visit again as the food just wasn't to my liking. And this is coming from a huge curry lover
Great, authentic Ethiopian restaurant within easy walking distance of town and Piccadilly and Oxford Rd stations. The restaurant is up the spiral staircase which appears you enter Istanbul Kebab shop! Several Ethiopian couples were eating when we entered - which was encouraging. We ordered lamb tibs, and misir what with injera. Food was good portion size - we couldn't finish it - and tasted great. The waiter and staff were smiling and super friendly and helpful. The bill was very reasonable - recommended - will return.
I went to this place with a friend. The food was very nice but the menu is very limited. We got 2 meat dishes and a veggie dish. Staff were helpful in explaining the menu. The only issue was it was a lot of bread (I don't eat much bread in general). In addition due to limited menu it's not somewhere you could keep going to. This is real value for money. The entrance was difficult to find also.

If you are seeking tasty authentic food, then this is exactly what to expect. I eat out at almost every level of restaurant, this possibly one of the best meals and service for a long while. Each choose something different, enjoy sharing with copious tasty pancake bread. Wonderful.

Friendly service. The entrance is upstairs and it is easy to miss. A fast food place downstairs was shut but a separate entrance with stairs goes up. It was not very busy on a Monday night. I am am not familiar with Ethiopian restaurants in Manchester. London has good options. This was reasonable priced but less options than other Ethiopian restaurants I have visited. Awake tibs was a lot of sauce less meat than some places I have been to.I would go back if the area still.
Popped by for a quick dinner and was not disappointed. The staff were very friendly and I had the spicy lamb stew with traditional Ethiopian bread which was lovely. Also tried the Ethiopian beer which was nice light lager. Very much recommend if you’re looking for a different choice!

The first challenge is to find the restaurant!!!, it's quite unique entering a take- away & then going straight up a spiral staircase to locate the restaurant on a 1st floor. The owner could not be more friendly, helpful and clearly unable to trade without the very capable hands of his wife chef! Just go and experience! Choose a few different items off the menu to share & enjoy a local beer of the region. Just Brilliant!!

This was our first time eating Ethiopian food and I have to say that it wasn’t quite for us. We are novices so maybe we didn’t quite order the right mix of food. The traditional bread comes rolled up like little carpets and does taste quite odd. More like a sour pancake. Great to try something new but I think it may be my last foray into Ethiopian cuisine! However, the man who served us was lovely and polite and couldn’t do enough for us.
Would highly recommend this place, well priced, authentic and amazing flavours. Friendly staff in a quaint and cosy small restaurant. Small menu but every dish is brilliant, good vegan options.

Very interesting concept of Ethiopian cuisine. Food very very spicey, so be ready for that. Veggie supplements amazing. Staff very friendly. Space could be better designed. 15 punds per person with drinks so very good value. No desserts sadly.

Authentic Ethiopian cuisine which was superb. A quaint restaurant just above another takeaway shop; it had a family feel and we weren’t wrong - the decor was rustic and it smelt of the beautiful food that was being cooked. Compliments to the chef, and our server. You are both doing an amazing job, and we’ll definitely be regularly visiting when we come to Manchester again. Thank you for showing us how to dine Ethiopian style!
Greated by Nebyou, very lovely and nice with us. The lady served our food recommended how to get the best out of the cuisine, as a first timer on Ethiopian food eater. People were lovely and food was amazing. Definitely will be coming again!!

The place is a little bit difficult to find as it's above a Kebab place (so you have to go up the stairs) but the place is cute, the staff is super friendly and the food is awesome!!!! I discovered Ethiopian cuisine in this restaurant and I was won over! It is a place very well rated on the internet and I confirm that it deserves it. The service was impeccable and informative. It is an address that I keep to come back.

Habesha is really amazing. The furniture is not as in smart dining but this is the whole point,..get immersed in authentic Ethiopian culture. Roast your own coffee beans before or after an injera meal. And the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommend.
Amazing, authentic and affordable. It's a perfect oasis of Ethiopian food tucked above the madness of the gay district on the first level of the building. Highly recommend this for anyone wanting a quieter dinner that'll fill you and not break the bank
A warm welcome! The food and serving was explained and delivered to our table along with Ethiopian lager. the injera was unlike anything I've tried before. The meal was terrific, and we'll be back.

Very good service. We won’t know how to eat the food properly without the guidance of the friendly staff. The chicken and beef are well flavored and the vegetables are really nice but the bread is too sour for us. The price is reasonable too.

This is our first time trying Ethiopian food and we were blown away by the food here at Habesha. The gentleman waiter was very polite and accommodating. He helped us to navigate the dining experience with ease.
The food was great and there is an incredibly friendly staff who are happy to introduce you to the Ethiopian ways of eating. The local beer was very tasty - a really nice place that is definitely worth a visit!
This is my favourite place to eat in Manchester. Its cheap and more importantly absolutely delicious. Great eating experience, staff are always friendly and very relaxed vibes. Can't recommend highly enough.
An amazing gem in the gay village Manchester. Been going for years. The food is amazing and great value for money. Great service one of my favourite places to eat in Manchester. I love it.
